Woman keys Tesla in act of vandalism caught on camera

- A mother and son came back to their car after a doctor’s appointment in Mission Valley and found deep scratches on the driver-side door. The brazen act of vandalism was recorded by cameras on the victim’s car.
“She like goes into her trunk and she like gets her key out, and you can see, she comes around and that’s when she keys the car,” said the victim’s son, who didn’t want to be identified by name.
The 2019 Tesla Model 3 was in a parking garage at the Kaiser Medical Center off Vandever Avenue while they were at a medical appointment.
“We come out and we see the scratch on the whole side of the car and we were like, ‘What happened?’ I immediately noticed it from like far away and I knew that wasn’t there before,” said the victim’s son. “I immediately got into the car and checked the dash cam and that’s when I went over all the video.
The driver-side camera recorded the whole incident and he couldn’t believe it.

Obviously she will have to pay for it, but it doesn't make the car whole again. The owner will be without the car for who knows how long because if the scratch is deep enough then bondo with be used to fill in it and being repainted it might not match completely and then the PPF has to reapplied at a different shop.

My daughter had to have chemotherapy daily for months and then weekly, bi weekly and so on. We have been parking at Childrens hospital often since she was 3 (she’s now 10). 5yr of her life on chemotherapy. When she was about 5, we came out to get in our car after a full day at clinic, transfusions etc that took hours on her port and as I unlocked the car I noticed a scratch running the full length of my Tahoe. I hadn’t parked close to anyone….i tried to ask security if they could check the cameras and they just shrugged.
We still drive around with that stupid scratch because my deductible is high and chemo is expensive. People suck. We aren’t out here on Medicaid and living off the government. My insurance doesn’t pay for everything 100%. In all these years we have almost 200k in debt for things that my insurance didn’t cover…..so a $1500 deductible isn’t easy to do.

Why withhold her information and block out her license plate? As for the victims… Since they have the woman’s name, address, and video evidence, they don’t have to wait and hope an inept police department will do their job. They can sue her for the damages in small claims court, and since it was done with a part of her car, place a claim with her car liability insurance. These are both things that can easily be done without a lawyer.
Usually it takes police to thoroughly investigate crimes before coming up with an answer. Even though there appears to be enough evidence she’s the culprit, we don’t know if the car, or plates are stolen, or even if the owner was the actual driver that day. If the plate is shown and evidence proves it wasn’t the owner, then she could sue the station for defamation of character.

I don’t understand why people do this, there’s no reward or gain from doing this, people throughout the country just go up to strangers cars, start marking the car, then leave. How do you even get satisfaction in doing this? In this scenario the lady doesn’t even know the profile of who drives the car, she just did it just to do it. This is how crazy people are now.

Here in Australia we had an identical incident about a week ago where an elderly couple did the same to a Tesla and a BMW. The Tesla's camera caught it all and they are now before the court. Throw the book at em.

Serious question for anyone who knows the answer. Why do some people insist on keying teslas? I'm not a Musk fan but keying a random person's vehicle isn't hurting Elon. I don't understand the thought process behind it.
Different people have different issues & motives. Here's one that tends to happen: EV buyers tend to be liberal, concerned about pollution and climate change, opposed to fossil fuels. There are a lot of conservatives, all fired up by Fox and right wing radio, who really hate liberals these days, see an EV, consider the owner their enemy. Same dynamic as the pickup drivers who "roll coal" on other drivers on the road.
Another set might be people who envy the Tesla owner. And the ones who are extremely frustrated by their own problems, and just want to make sure they're not the only person that's unhappy.

There should be a follow up report on this, telling the results of the case. Then, if it goes to trial, what the prosecutor asked for and what her actual sentence is... as well as who the Judge was. My bet? Probation without restitution for damage.

I actually witnessed a person doing this to my new car...terrible experience it was. Visiting Alabama and returning home with multiple scratches on my vehicle's paint--the police took the report and did nothing to the culprit. I did not want to return to go to a small claims court and repaired the damage at my own expense. Oh yes, I almost forgot, the person denied any wrong doing.
Police will not do anything unless there's a serious loss of money, life, or serious injury.
I once was in line to pay at a self pay register. I left the wallet and walked out, but I remembered when I got out to the parking lot and turned back immediately. The wallet was gone. There was camera, but it's near impossible to get Home Depot to release the footage. They made it such a hassle that you just gave up.

They are not going to provide it unless it's a serious crime or a big theft, like your vehicle is stolen. The reason? Business does not want the reputation of petty crimes happening on their premise.

I’ve had this done to me before as well, more than once. Someone used to do this to my father’s vehicles all the time. This is so satisfying to see that for once, it looks like someone will be caught for this. When we lived in an apartment complex - when my wife got a handicapped placard the complex management gave us a spot in front of our building. Someone didn't like that and one night keyed both sides deeply on both sides of our van. Never found out who did it. So I really hope this lady gets prosecuted and the book thrown at her. Smile lady, you're on candid camera.
She was caught, did you not watch the video? Being prosecuted and the book thrown at her doesn't mean going to jail. All it means is she will have to pay for the damage. And later she could refuse to pay and they will have to take her to court again, to make her pay. And that process can take a long, long time if she ever pays at all.

I have struggled for some time with the fact that USA has only 4% of the world's population yet a staggering 25% of the world's prison population. Incidents like this one offer some insight as to why. With many exceptions, Americans overall seem to inherently lack self-discipline and good judgement. Anyone who has been to Europe and observed European drivers, compared to American drivers, will agree.
Some people don’t want to see other people with nice things, especially when it’s nice things they want, but can’t afford.

This is why I didn’t buy a Tesla. I noticed when I had a BMW that people honked at me on the road a LOT. When I switched to a Subaru the honking stopped. My driving hadn’t changed. People are jealous of those perceived to have money. Not interested in someone else’s jealousy making my life more difficult.

I got a new car and within a week, someone keyed it...literally scratched an X into the paint and put a few dings on it. there's no scorned ex, I don't have any problems with neighbors...I keep to myself. Unfortunately, my car doesn't have such an advanced camera system, but I did install a camera with motion detection. I hope they take her to court, both criminal and civil.

sitting in my car a guy walked by my car, his young son behind him struggling with a massive sports duffle bag.
As the boy walked by his duffel bag scraped up along the entire side of my car, the damage was amazing, brand new car...
When I got out quickly to yell STOP you're scratching my car!
The father went into instant jock mode, being violent, swearing at and threatening me.
I called the cops, and when they got there he was saying I grabbed and shoved his kid etc and was threatening them...
School cams had everything...
Dad had to pay a few thousand for the fix.

There's no case, it's an insurance issue. How did she lie? You don't know if the registered owner, who the detective and reporter spoke to, was the person that keyed the Tesla. The car could have be lent to a relative or friend that day.

Couldn’t be an ongoing investigation, cops have the video and the license plate no., address of owner. Just find her and see if vandal and owner are the same person, shouldn’t take more than a day. Or are they too busy fighting other crimes, one cop should be able to resolve quickly.
