- A youth-led movement had warned the government of President William Ruto against passing a finance bill they said would add to Kenyans’ economic troubles. Lawmakers passed it anyway and all hell broke loose. Chaos gripped the Kenyan capital Nairobi on June 25, as police fired tear gas, water cannons and even live rounds as hundreds of protesters stormed the Parliament building where the lawmakers were passing the controversial bill. The bill aims to increase an additional $2.7 billion in taxes as part of an effort to shed off the heavy debt load. The government has already given some concessions, promising amendments to the bill to scrap proposed new taxes on bread, cooking oil, car ownership and financial transactions. But protesters are demanding that the entire bill be scrapped and that William Ruto to step down as the President.
