- Kenya: President Ruto Vows Crackdown Against "Violence" After Parliament Ransacked
Protests against proposed tax hikes in Kenya's capital, Nairobi, turned violent as demonstrators stormed parliament, setting part of the building on fire. President William Ruto condemned the violence, stating the demonstrations were hijacked by dangerous elements and vowed to crack down on those responsible. Ruto said that "criminals pretending to be peaceful protesters" hijacked the demonstrations. Police responded with gunfire, resulting in at least five deaths. The largely peaceful protests had been ongoing for a week before erupting into chaos on June 25. Protesters threw stones at police and ransacked the parliament compound. The military was deployed to support the police, using tear gas and water cannons. UN Chief Antonio Guterres and the White House have urged restraint.

Its bigger than just tax hikes. This was the last straw. We are tired as an over taxed nation. We want accountability of all taxes collected. They steal taxes and loans. We are heavily indebted. The loans from IMF and World bank have been looted. No major infrastructures.
Unemployment is such a big issue right now. They want to sell 35 state corporations, cut school feeding programme, cut free Linda mama maternity services in all public hospitals...WHAT REALLY DO THE LOANS DO FOR US? Where are our taxes?

We contribute towards a national health insurance fund(NHIF/SHIF) Which is a total scam: the public hospitals have no medicines, understaffed, lack of medical equipment and worse you will still top up from your own pocket to cover medical bills. And they don't even pay the medical staff...
