Wow. I have played guitar for 40 years. (Off and on). I laid back for about 5 years. I had the excuse that I was to busy to pick it up. Then my neighbor picked up her daughters Uke. And asked me to play with her. I said (gulp), sure! So I searched Valerie guitar tutorial, and found this, the third in the search. Wow. This style of less is a couple of levels up in quality or efficacy for me. I'm Subscribing, and going to check if there is a Patreon site. Wow.
Hi dude, thanks for the inspiration. I had almost forgot this great song. Very pleasing easy to follow chords, makes practice for up-tempo 'Motown-ish' stuff very enjoyable. Thanks again.
Thank you. This is challenging me to step up and sounds amazing. Would have loved to hear you play it all the way through on your acoustic as that also sounded great. Great lesson.
Hi! In the pre chorus you say it is A flat but the n cheat sheet that appears when practicing is an Ab maj7, so, which one do you play more often?? I see here you are playing a good old Ab. Thanks. Great tutorial btw
Is the mute technique different on an electric rather than an acoustic? You used your palm on the acoustic to teach it but when you play it back you're on electric and it seems like you're lifting your fingers instead... Wish it matched up with what you taught in the beginning. Anyone have any tips?
You do a third strumming pattern in the beginning at 0:37 to transition between the two you teach here and into the chorus. Is that just your way of making the change easier, or is that part of the song? Would you explain that little change? Thanks for such a great lesson!
Hi! Good ear! When I play the demo at the beginning of each lesson, I'm usually just feeling it out and sometimes might add or change things because I'm performing the tune, instead of reading it. At that point, I'm doing a basic 16th note pattern: Down Down-up (with the Down-up on muted strings).
Well, sometimes I go out by myself And I look across the water And I think of all the things of what you're doing In my head I paint a picture Since I've come home Well, my body's been a mess And I miss your ginger hair And the way you like to dress Oh, won't you come on over? Hi James, i am sorry for bothering you again, but could you tell me what chords is Ed Sheeran playing on this version of "Perfect" th-cam.com/video/qyKE5FAdnPo/w-d-xo.html. I know you have made a tutorial on this song with capo, I've learned that version and that made it easier for me to learn a bit from this version, but i am not on such a high level to recognise which chords is he playing. If you could do this i would be extremely grateful.
Ahh I see! So, when this song came out in the spring, this live version didn't exist yet, so I just figured it out by ear. I might make a non-capo version, we shall see.
Actually I think this live version is the same as my lesson, but without the capo on, so it's just a half step lower. Probably easier for Ed Sheeran to sing it live since that makes it slightly lower.
So MANY tutorials these days are for total guitar-newbies who seem to not know HOW to mute a string or pluck a string with a pick. Valerie is a tough song for newbies to execute the subtle nuances, especially those players who actually need to know how to mute a string while contemplating learning a song like this. It's as if tutors think, "Oh, i KNOW! Today, i 'll make a video tutorial of a tough song and present it as if only guitar beginners are going to try to learn this." Why don't you "over explaining" guitar teachers title your videos correctly and say, " "Valerie" Guitar Tutorial for complete beginners - Electric Guitar". At least if you played the entire song once through, showing the riffs, the more advanced players can benefit from what you've learned and we won't have to waste our time in "guitar-101 class" teaching Hendrix riffs. Sorry.
Best chord learning video i have ever found for valerie

Nice video. The chord you're playing is A flat major not maj7. Need to add the G to make it maj7. Not a big deal. Just a tip.
Yeah. No idea what was going through my head at the time. I have a degree in Jazz Guitar so definitely not a mistake I should have made, haha!
@@Good_Guitarist So are we meant to play just an A♭maj or an A♭maj7?
Hi Rahul, either one works, but in this case an A♭maj is sufficient.
@@Good_Guitarist Ab maj definitely sounds better than the Ab 7 maj in my opinion.
@@dannyesse3043 would have to be Abmaj7 or plain or Ab triad (bar chord) ...Ab7 whole different function and NG.
Extremely useful thank you!
You're welcome!
I know I’m extremely late, but what amp settings do you use to get that sound?
such a nice version......... excellent lesson.........
outstanding great tut!

AbMaj7 in chart but you're just playing a major chord -_-.very misleading.
