I feel like the first one is a bit more optional. Hear me out, personally I organize my manga by series genre such as romance, shonen, isekai, etc. While I am leaving space for manga I want to finish in the future I don’t recommend just leaving space. I recommend adding items such as box sets, figures, Nendroids, etc, I do this so that I won’t feel pressured into buying more and focusing on reading them instead. But this is just from personal experience so take this comment with a grain of salt.
I like to have my stuff organized alphabetically because it just makes it easier for me to find what I’m looking for when I want to reread something. But at the end of the day your setup just needs to be unique to you and your needs weather that be color coordinated or by genre
Great advice! As someone who has been collecting manga since 2006, I have to say: PACE YOURSELF! Rome wasn’t built in a day, so a manga collection that looks like a library/bookstore most likely won’t happen overnight! Just because someone has a lot of manga doesn’t mean that they are rich. I see these types of comments all the time. This is a hobby that is supposed to be fun and joyful. It’s not a competition. Get series that YOU enjoy, not something that you feel pressured into reading just because it’s popular. Also, make a catalog list of what you have already and ones that you wish to add to your collection. This helps keep you organized and helps (not completely fool-proof) prevent duplicate purchases. I’m guilty of buying duplicates and then don’t know what to do with them… 😅 Happy collecting! 👍🏻
Great tips! All I’d add is that for the omnibuses be cautious of their quality. Some are very cheaply made and since the books are so large they are known for being hard to read without damaging the spine.
Yep I opened the second collection book of Orange just a bit to read, and although the pages are the best quality I've seen, the spine is completely wrecked that easily🥲
Rearranging the shelf gives a great opportunity to also clean and dust your storage for your manga collection, as well as also giving you the chance to clean/dust your manga. I love manipulating my collection to reacquaint myself with my different series and update my home library catalog. Edit: this is also a great time to curate/cull.
Aaah discontinued/out of print series is such a big problem in my collectinion. I have a handful of series that have been forever incomplete since middle/high school =w= and yes the rando volumes I use to try and trade online or sell to bookoff. (I say as I have a random box of unhauled manga on my floor haha)
God I relate to the stray volumes one. I've so many times gone "but its so cheap and I have interest in this manga (I didnt) Im basically saving money buying vol 7 right now"
omg thank you so much for mentioning the library as a resource!! I've worked in libraries for years & always follow/give out that same advice 🧡 alot of people still underestimate us, honestly thank you!! 😊
I never realized merged volumes were called Omnibuses thank u for saying its name!! I wanna continue buying the Death note omnibuses soon bc its such a good read!! And also the aesthetics are chefs kiss
A big tip for manga collectors who, like me, much rather buy in stores than online. KEEP A LIST OF WHAT YOU HAVE, HAVEN'T AND WANT. I ended up buying so many duplicates because i forgot i already had a volume or a version of a certain series and found out way later because i forgot to put them in the shelfs or it was a "u buy it, can't give it back" type of deal. So have a list in your phone of the series that you collect, with the number of the volumes that you haven't bought yet.
The tip about holding off on buying new shelving until you have an idea of how much you want to collect is so crucial. I’ve gone through a hundred different shelving arrangements (and a lot of money) when I should’ve just waited for “the one” 😅
Not sure if anyone else has said it but when buying a manga, flip through the pages to see if any pages are faded. I recently bought many volumes of the Chainsaw Man volume and the 3rd volume had faded pages which were a bit difficult to read from. Unless you are a person which doesn't mind the faded pages, it's always better to check. This video was very helpful!
I don't even know why i'm watching this, I've been collecting for the past 9 years ^^" But these are great, beginner-friendly tips! Especially the one about checking the completion status of a series before buying :') I've got quite a few i'll never finish collecting because the publisher just stopped printing new volumes. They just continuously resell the old ones. Another tip - if you've got a big collection with lots of long series/oneshots, it might be a good idea to start a spreadsheet or some kind of list for volume tracking. This way, you can avoid accidentally buying doubles (mostly works for online shopping, but if you upload it to your cloud/google drive it can also turn out useful in physical stores).
This was a great video! I’ve been collecting for a little while now. I dropped the hobby for several years, but I picked it back up recently. I have ADHD, so collecting manga was quite the struggle at first to not blow all of my money on it. My advice would be to purchase chronologically and don’t buy scalped. Choosing a series or 2 to hyper focus on finding helps me to not spend as much money on the hobby. That’s also why I will only purchase the series in chronological order, too. This way I can read it up to where I have purchased it and not have any unread series on my shelves. And lastly, the reason for not buying from scalpers is fairly obvious, since they over charge for the books you’re looking for and they know that someone is likely to buy it for their asking price. It’s better to be patient and buy it at retail price when it’s in stock. Plus it supports the artists who made the series, instead of some person trying to prey on fans.
0:58 that's clever idea to stack the manga, so they still visible I have been stacking my manga horizontaly, and you said it will ruin the spine I must try that pedestal thing
Great informative video. Thanks for all the fantastic manga collecting tips . This video was a great starter guide to entertaining the world of manga collecting. Information received. Thanks again
For the stray volumes problem, if you are ever lucky enough or have ever been to anime cons, most cons have a manga lounge area to just sit down and chill to read manga. Besides reading manga, some manga lounges allow you to swap some of your manga for any extra inventory the manga lounge may have. That's how I was able to get rid some of my extra volumes while also increasing my collection at the same time.
yes i 100% agree with the library, i always check manga out from there, if a volume isnt at my local one we can order it from a diffrent branch, we also just wrapped up this thing where every month using their money you can order any book/ manga off amazon prime and you will be the first to read it and then turn it in for the library to use. its so fun because some branches dont have series so it was a great way to read them!
This was really useful thanks. I practically don't have any space in my room (which I share with my sister) but I want to collect manga and now that I know I don't have to have an entire shelf for at first is a relief. I want to start with The god of highschool it's not a manga but a webtoon that's getting a physical volumes and there are 3 volumes right now.
One of my biggest recommendation's to people starting out to collecting manga. Is check multiple source's before purchasing cause some websites/seller's could have it cheaper then where your originally looking.
Here’s a tip for y’all: Look around your public/school library to see if they have a manga series you enjoy. Read what you can make a list and get the rest of the series on your own. That’s what I did for TBHK, Flying Witch, etc.
Hii... Your contents are always so nice... And you are the one who pulled me liking mangas and i really like your organization and collection of mangas...🙂👍💗
God... you're so organised TwT honestly goals. I've been collecting manga since middleschool and i'd say i've also got quite a nice collection, but i have a lot of loose volumes which is okay if it's a volume1 i feel, but sometimes it's like... volume 2 or 3, and i'd tell myself "i'll get the ones before it another time" but i never do 😭
Empty egg cartons with a flat piece of cardboard is also super cheap, and easy way to stack books, I seen a lot of people do that and it holds up really well.
i will def be using these tips! my manga is currently stacking on my desk with my full demon slayer collection and some others. i don't even have a bookshelf yet! where'd you find your evangelion manga? it's sold out everywhere :')
I believe the series is manifactured by viz (do correct me if im wrong) and they are slowly reprinting older series! Ive been looking for kamisama kiss for years and they finally started to come back in stock :)
Omnibus and 3 -in-1s can be made with cheaper/worse paper quality. Also they might have worse binding so you lose a lot into the middle of the page. They can also be harder to read. Not all, but many. I would imagine the complete Death Note volume would be impossible to read.
Crying bc my library doesn't have any physical copies of manga- even their online selection leaves much to be desired. On the other hand, I can read Nancy drew comics...?
On the top of doing research on Omnibuses, make sure to look at reviews of print quality! It's not always the case but I remember having a few that had noticable lower quality than the tankobon. It may not matter to you but if it does always be sure!
How do u control ur self from buying a lot of manga?? When I saw ur manga shopping vids I saw u pick out like 2-3 manga from Barnes and nobles!! I literally can’t control myself 😭
My biggest issue is when I got some before I started collecting them, I didn't have a proper space for them. Now I have some where there might be a tear on the spine, or the cover bent/folded somewhat due to poor storage before hand. Always makes me feel like I need to get a new copy of it, though nothing is perfect, so don't fret over any minor damages
I really dont have to deal with most issues cause i have a shelf and a lot of space but my main issue is manga is expensive!!! and as a school student i dont have much money so i cant really afford much manga and often so i mostly save up for a whole year and also my birthday money and do a satisfying manga haul for my birthdays and my school also has no manga and no library in my area either has manga and since i save up for a whole year to buy them i am also really scared of manga yellowing and thats a problem too.
5:03 what do you mean by “stacking your books horizontally”? I don’t have a shelf right now but I’m just stacking them on top of one another on my floor, so is that okay? I don’t want the spines damaged as having them neatly stacked next to each other on a shelf with all the spines matching is what i aspire to have one day
this isn’t like super helpful for everyone but i also recommend buying one book of a series at a time ! i’ve been so stressed thinking i’d i read a whole entire series and only got around to volume 3 then dropping it
I use floating shelves for my manga and as I add new volumes I just add an extra foot of shelving to that layer. I also have a smaller normal bookshelf for manga that I only have a few volumes of, as well as light novels like the naruto retsuden novels
while omnibuses do take up less space overall, I dislike them because they take up more space as one book. what I mean is that having smaller individual volumes makes it easier to fill a shelf out instead of not having enough room to squeeze a thicker omnibus in that empty space. they also tend to be more unwieldy and difficult to read.
These are some really useful tips, even for an "old" collector like me. I actually stopped buying manga for about a decade and got rid of like half of what I had (still own like 6-7 shelf rows...) but I recently got bit by that bug again :)
I am so so happy to hear that!! Wasn’t too sure how applicable these tips were to experienced collectors, but glad some of these helped. And welcome back to collecting!! :)
Thank you for the advice! It is really helpful. It’s just a shame that my library has a very small manga section, and doesn’t even have the first of any volume or anything.
I've been stacking manga for a bit and it's really only affected the real crap quality ones like kodansha. Personally it's sharped a lot of mine which I like, never was a fan of rounded edges on manga. But I will be getting risers to end that eventually.
One series I regret not buying volume by volume but instead reading with my shonen jump subscription is chainsaw man, but I seriously can’t wait! One day I want to buy it because I adore the art so much.
I personally organise my collection by favourites. Ones that arent the same size go on to a side shelf, so my collection starts with Yu-Gi-Oh on my big shelf, and then on one of the side shelves, it starts with Servamp which has smaller volumes
That sounds like a great way to organize too!! Yeah, my biggest thing is definitely the different sizes of the manga haha, wish they were all a bit more consistent in sizing! But organizing by favorites is lovelyyy
I am guilty of buying random vols because they are cheap (but I try to do it with series I am collecting XD but for example now I have noragami 1 2 3 and 23)
I have a complete and non-complete sections of manga. GTO is completed, GTO 7 Days Shonan is completed, GTO early years is also completed and expensive.
I feel you on tip 5 I literary have a tub full of 100+ books because I don't have a self although not all the books are manga some are regular books or visual novels. Lol it's full now and I have the demon slayer box set coming in T-T I also ordered death note box set but it is currently not in stock
Your point about the Death Note box set being hundreds of dollars is misleading. It's third parties selling them at scalper prices at the moment since there's no stock. Last September I picked up the box set for $90 CAD (on sale but still). Should be obvious that if you're buying from a scalper it's going to be absurdly expensive.
Yes you're absolutely right! I was mainly pointing out the difference between the "easiest ways" to obtain that version, and also buying just from one source (I used amazon in this case). But I definitely should've pointed out that those prices were a bit extreme and that you can find cheaper ones (just would require some work). Thanks for pointing this out!!
bro I'm not gonna lie I kinda freaked out when I saw you pulled out Hana kimi. I sold the only volumes that I had I regret it every single time I see someone else have them. 😭😭
Finally someone talks about libraries sometimes my library gives out books I have gotten a kingdom of hearts book and death note volume 3 completely for free (one library had a very bad quality volume of durarara ☹️)
I dont own any yet. But I still watched. I might try and track down a complete collection of berserk at least as I've been meaning to read it for years. And I'd love to own nice copies of bakemonogatari as I've read a couple of them and I love ishin's style. I do own all the anime already. Also junji ito is always a blast to read. Man maybe I shouldn't the more I think about it the more I see myself falling down this rabbit hole.
I bought my first manga about a year ago. At first, I didn't have the intention to start collecting manga but now I stand at a 60+ volumes. Now I need to buy an actual bookshelf cause I'm totally out of space.
I love all of these tips! I agree with looking up different versions of series, I bought vol 1 of Xxxholic until I realized I’d rather collect the omnibus versions. Side note, which anime is the clip @ 5:25 from?
I got myself a tiny book shelf on my desk for my manga and it sucks that some series are like quite rare and expensive like gto Beck trigun and these are series i want to get
These tips were great and I'm glad to know that I wasn't the only person who got doubles of books they wanted to read before getting complete sets 😂💕 Also by the way...Where did you get that riser at?
haha thank you so so much for watching!! Those doubles make me go “aw darn” sometimes haha 😆 For the risers, I actually got them from both Daiso and Amazon! I just searched up “display risers” on Amazon :)
@@mangatama No problem! 😄 Lol I just put my doubles on the bottom of my shelf...that way I can easily hid my indiscretion 😆 Oh, okay! Thank you! I tried looking for some on the internet but I think I was putting the wrong thing in the search bar 😂
Hey there, on the shelves where you have two rows of books, with the row at the back being on a step, what did you use to do that? Sorry if you’ve mentioned it somewhere before, this vid was a random rec
Ayy that's my Anime Corner article!!! That's awesome! Thank you so much 🙏🏻 This is a wonderful video 🙌🏻
!! AHHH yayyy thank you so much for writing such an awesome article, I found it incredibly helpful and had to share it with everyone! :)

I totally agree!!!! Completely depends how you want to organize! :) thanks for bringing this up!
honestly I just organize mine by color cuz it's pretty 💀
@@FantaCattttttt I do that to lol
I organize by mood and size like conveniently my hardcovers horror together, and individual manga with bit of romance

That sounds like a great way to organize too!! Yeah, my biggest thing is definitely the different sizes of the manga haha, wish they were all a bit more consistent in sizing! But organizing by favorites is lovelyyy
I am guilty of buying random vols because they are cheap (but I try to do it with series I am collecting XD but for example now I have noragami 1 2 3 and 23)
You started in middle school me too!!!
wow I love your library I'd like to have the same
i'm waiting for my 3 volumes in 1 skip beat that will help me a lot i need to sort out my bookcase when i get more stuff
R/mangaswap is pretty good for stray volumes
super agree!! I used to use it a lot to buy stray volumes, so definitely will try and sell mine there :) ty!
I have a complete and non-complete sections of manga. GTO is completed, GTO 7 Days Shonan is completed, GTO early years is also completed and expensive.
I am prolly gonna do the omnibus thing with Attack on Titan because my shelf is on the smaller side.
I say a good thing to do with stray volumes or duplicates you don't want is to sell them
I'm so surprised GTO has been discontinued in the US, it's mad popular in my country
I feel you on tip 5 I literary have a tub full of 100+ books because I don't have a self although not all the books are manga some are regular books or visual novels. Lol it's full now and I have the demon slayer box set coming in T-T I also ordered death note box set but it is currently not in stock
TH-cam recommending me this after having 5 mangas already (mangab series, but unfinished)
omg i used to collect hana kimi too!! I ended up selling them and regret it now too :(( such a fun series
Finally someone talks about libraries sometimes my library gives out books I have gotten a kingdom of hearts book and death note volume 3 completely for free (one library had a very bad quality volume of durarara ☹️)
Wow!! That’s so nice that your library gives out books, that’s amazing :) Thanks so much for watching!!
@@mangatama yea it was a surprise too! One was for a raffle and the other was for reading :)
Tip 8: If there many space on your shelf, buy a nice book nook to temporary fill it.
seeing all those magnificent books...emotional damage...i m jeaaaaaloooouuus
I bought my first manga about a year ago. At first, I didn't have the intention to start collecting manga but now I stand at a 60+ volumes. Now I need to buy an actual bookshelf cause I'm totally out of space.
If it's my mother and my auntie style, they will throw our manga out if we forgot to lock our room.
I Wish I knew you could read almost every manga online on the tablet where you can read new chapters directly when they come out. Shits free baby!
Reading irl just hits different, I feel more immersed into the book however for longer series like bleach or one piece I read online
What did you use to have the one punch man volumes raised in 1:02 , wanna do the same for my one piece volumes
I read the whole black cat series through my library and most of fruits baskets and some of xxxholic
0:34 for me i just do it with height lol😂😂Btw good advice
CrimsonHero also stopped being in English after volume14 and there are 20 in the series. 😢
I love all of these tips! I agree with looking up different versions of series, I bought vol 1 of Xxxholic until I realized I’d rather collect the omnibus versions.
Side note, which anime is the clip @ 5:25 from?
@lckanane thank you!
I got myself a tiny book shelf on my desk for my manga and it sucks that some series are like quite rare and expensive like gto Beck trigun and these are series i want to get
These tips were great and I'm glad to know that I wasn't the only person who got doubles of books they wanted to read before getting complete sets 😂💕
Also by the way...Where did you get that riser at?
haha thank you so so much for watching!! Those doubles make me go “aw darn” sometimes haha 😆
For the risers, I actually got them from both Daiso and Amazon! I just searched up “display risers” on Amazon :)
@@mangatama No problem! 😄 Lol I just put my doubles on the bottom of my shelf...that way I can easily hid my indiscretion 😆
Oh, okay! Thank you! I tried looking for some on the internet but I think I was putting the wrong thing in the search bar 😂
I started off my collection with a shoebox 😂
omg that’s legendary HAHAH
Hey there, on the shelves where you have two rows of books, with the row at the back being on a step, what did you use to do that? Sorry if you’ve mentioned it somewhere before, this vid was a random rec
I don’t know the exact one she used but it looked like an acrylic shelf displayer which you can get them on Amazon
Yk instead of the 3 manga rule what i do is read a few chapters online and kf k like it o buy them offline 😅
Stray books can be put up for sale at least.
I love Tokyo ghoul series 😂❤
THX ☺️
