Fishan, Jabulani and Baby Elephant, Phabeni 🐘 Catch up with the Bulls!

- Catch up today with the bulls in the herd - namely Jabulani, Fishan and Phabeni, who stays close to the feet of mama Setombe and big sister, Klaserie.
Jabulani celebrates a birthday this month, turning 27 years old. He is getting into the spirit of things with a thorough mud shower beside Lundi and Kumbura. Tokwe is also close by, while Fishan secures a special pool all to himself. The big bull also luxuriates in the cooling and healing powers of water and mud on this hot day in the wilderness.
We continue to check Fishan’s pressure wound every day but we are happy to report that at the moment it has closed. We will keep monitoring it as it is possible that it could open again and need to be cleaned to prevent maggots or infection. Fishan will always have a more sensitive front left leg, compared to his other legs and if he does keep putting all his weight on the left side when he sleeps (to free up the stronger right side to help him get up), there is a chance he could activate the sore again.
We keep the sand heaps in the homestead garden high to help reduce the pressure as much as possible for Fishan when he lies down and we keep the sand loose. We hire and bring in a TLB every month to enable us to acquire new sand to build the heaps and keep them high! Elephant high!
Phabeni is doing so well out in the bush with the herd, on daily walks, swims in the dam, splashes in the mud, and learning no doubt infinite elephant wisdom from just being around the elders and watching them daily. This is the beauty of the orphanage and homestead setup, as the calf has managed to smoothly transition into the herd and grow with them, while still returning to the orphanage at night so he can get those milk bottles he so needs around the clock.
Khanyisa gives Adine the sweetest little rumbles and Klaserie also checks in with curious trunk greetings as they head out of the dam and into the bush toward the marula trees.

Amazing how Phabeni has transformed from a scared, heartbroken infant with his head down in the corner to a confident young bull with such a beautiful family. The power of love is amazing!

I remember him hiding in the tall foliage. He was a scared little bull. He's come so far in a short time thanks to everyone, humans and elephants. 🐘
Phabeni is looking more robust these days, thanks to his loving acceptance into the herd and the diligent care of the team. His improved emotional and psychological health and sense of security with his new elephant family seems to be helping him grow bigger and stronger physically. It’s a joy and a privilege to witness the herd’s interactions and day-to-day activities, especially with the littlest one joining in. Thank you so much.
Although all of the herd members are special souls, Fishan's adaptation to his 'special needs' leg shows one can overcome. They are all gorgeous majestic Angels...
I am also a Fishan Fan of this Elephant herd. When the Name Fishan is posted under the V feed, i start looking for him. His front Left leg showed several 'pressure point' callus's housed under the skin. Happy he is not in any Danger from an open Wound that might get infected. Still think of Kansisya's dreadful wounds from the Wire trap she was found in. He certainly has done much to Rehab. himself from that broken Ankle yrs ago. I would hope he is not in constant pain from that "Healed' injury. The fact that he does normal Elephant things like throw mud on his body and move around , tree to tree indicates that old injury doesn't occupy much of his waking moments.

The youngest herd member Phabeni. is getting along well and has a good effect on the herd dynamics: Females tending to the Babies and the Bulls drawing lines herd territory lines at the water holes and mud ponds against encroaching intruders like Rinos.

Phebani's last greeting to Adine was like "Hi mama Adine! I got to get back with my family, bye!" Very cute and heartwarming. This is the goal of course when receiving a new elephant calf. I am sure it is wonderful for the females in the herd too!👏👏

Yes, they are the two whom I always enjoy hearing that they are well, knowing how they overcame their injuries and pain and are beloved members of their family. It's so good to hear that Fishan's pressure sore has healed over, a true blessing. 6 years since his accident! 😳 I love every one of the herd to bits, but these two have a little extra piece of my heart. 🤗💖

I love Phabeni’s hurried trunk greeting to Adine then dashes off to catch up with his Mom 😂😂 that was so cute. I love watching the herd. Nature truly is wonderful! If all the herd are/were orphans it shows how easily they can all fit in with one another, just as how mankind should and could!

Oh how I would love to spend time just hanging out with Fishan.. I've always had a soft spot for the bulls of the Herd and in particular Fishan. He has such a beautiful spirit ❤❤to all humans and of course the ellies of HERD..
Phabeni would leave any human, including Adine for his elephant family, it's impressive how attached is that tiny bull to Setombe and viceversa. She looked at him and Phabeni followed Setombe, turned his back to Adine !!!!! ❤🧡
It is so clear that Setombe and Klasserie are in love with "Lil Phabeni"! There's such a bond there & I have to wonder if "Lil Phabeni 's" mother's spirit doesn't have something to do with it all cuz it's not like Setombe to take on an orphan. Even Adine said this is very unusual and not at all in character for Setombe plus they were very surprised by it all. Although Klasserie fell in love 1st with her tons of kisses all over Phabeni might of made mommy Setombe look twice lol! What a miracle this whole situation is between Setombe, Klasserie & Phabeni cuz then Khanyisa doesn't have to share Lundi which would make for a more difficult situation among the 2 babies. I strongly feel that Klasserie and her roaming trunk kisses all over Phabeni in their 1st meeting made a huge impact in Setombe's decision to accept him cuz initially she had no interest until Klasserie covered Phabeni with trunk kisses all over. She was so cute. I watch that 1st meeting over and over again cuz it's just so sweet to see how it all came about. Klasserie is such a beautiful soul. She'll make a great mommy some day but she's already becoming a great allo mother. It comes so natural to her... Way to go Setombe on being a great mommy to Klasserie showing her so much love that she instinctually knows how to give it back even to an orphan who needs it... So unselfish!!!
Aw I also rewatch that video! Yes I think Klasserie fell in love with him first, and Phabeni loved receiving all those trunk kisses. We know that he’s an affectionate little bull who likes physical contact so I honestly think he chose Klasserie first and got a double gift in a wonderful new mom and loving big sister.

This is the first time that Bubi is close by? Bubi, there is a new baba! She takes her time, it will be ok! Khanyisa wants to be w/ her new baby brother all the time, that's so sweet!

I understand now why the 3 first meeting with Phabeni have been so important to the Herd !! never seen a such love between a mum and tiny orphan ! no one second without been separated 💕! is it difficult the evening when Phabeni has to go back alone at the orphanage ??? or Phabeni is used to this way of life ! I always had a soft spot for Gentleman Fishan He is not only a magnificient Ellie but he did not let his handicap holding him back He has adapted and innovated by creating a new role for himself within the Herd helping his friend wonderful Matriarch Tokwe with the girlies and the youngsters or how to convert a limitation into a strength and he is very successful at it With Jabu they have found a Gentlemen's agreement that is quite satisfying
Dame Setombe and daughter Klaserie never cease to amaze me with Little Phabeni They take such good care of him and almost the whole Herd participates in the safety and education of the little Bull when allowed by Mama Setombe 😅 So cute !🫶🐘

I’m just waiting for Adine’s definitive book on unique elephant behaviors in this particular herd. I would think that, just as primate family behaviors have their own dynamics, elephant family behaviors do as well. It only at times like these that I wish I were still young enough to explore my sudden curiosities. Lol
Happy birthday, Jabulani. Fishan's accident was when I started watching. It was so heartbreaking to watch him suffer. Thank God he had HERD and everyone involved caring for him. I still watch him walk. Then Khaniysa landed at the orphanage, and I was hooked. ❤

I am really happy to see Bubi around Phabeni. It seems, like all the other cow elephants in the herd, she has strong allomothering instinct, albeit being initially cautious about it. Phabeni is really looking very well and happy with his new family. He never wants to part from his mama for a long time, although he does send air trunk kisses to his human mother when he sees her. And Happy Birthday handsome and majestic Jabulani, who paved the way for the integration of the orphans after him.❤🐘❤

The videos out in the bush are a favorite of mine to watch. I noticed Phabeni made it clear ....he is an elephant first as he walked with his step mom Setombe while passing Adine and Owen. But he cares for Adine w/out a doubt..and little miss Sunshine Kanyisha loves Adine so much ❤ All is calm in the bush 🐘❤
