Now I know how that witch Ursula in "the Little Mermaid" feels. I wanna cast a spell on Ms. Lea and borrow her voice even for just one day, Boy, I would really have a blast!
I have been an avid Lea Salonga fan even before she coveted the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. However, when I first learned that she was going to be Fantine on Broadway, I had my doubts whether she could do justice to the role. Her beautiful and crystal-clear voice, to me, was not suited for the role. Boy was I WRONG! She turned out to be the best Fantine I have ever seen - vocally and acting wise. I have seen many actresses essay this role. Lea blew me away. FANTASTIC was she! Unforgettable!
I think they both did a fine job. Ruthie conveys emotion in her voice, but her expressions seem to focus on the disappointment of it all. Lea, on the other hand, runs the gamut of emotions - sadnesss, joy, anger, fear. And you relate to her. But brava to both!
LEA portrayed the role of Fantine very well cuz she is now a mom. She expressed exactly what is written in the book cuz she read it, which made it a fantastic performance... its different when u just sing it without understanding the role. SIMPLY MOVING PERFORMANCE.
God, this song just makes me weep! it's absolutely tragic. breaks my heart every time. "I had a dream my life would be so different from this hell I'm living. So different now from what it seemed..." stunning.
Benchmark performance! I cannot imagine how this could possibly be surpassed. I can vouch for how difficult it is to put this much feeling into a singing performance while maintaining good pitch and musicality. Lea has done it brilliantly here.
Absolutely amazing. I hadn't seen any videos of Lea Salonga as Fantine before (although, I'm familiar with her roles as Eponine and as Kim). Thank you so much for uploading this.
musical theater accomplishment! as eponine in the 10th anniversary concert at the royal albert hall, then recently as fantine at the o2 arena, check out her out of this world fantine performance at the 25th anniv concert.
I did see Ruthie, and I thought Lea's was more put together somehow but I connected more with Lea's performance. Perhaps I'm not the one who needs to keep my bias, since I'm not the one making a sweeping statement that only one person can sing a certain song?
I really love this song :) Leah did a really good job! I wish their cast would come to the US. I really want to watch them in October... but it's in London (T-T)
this is the best video of lea's "i dreamed a dream" performance. congratulations to the person who recorded this and the one who uploaded if they're not the same. nice work! =)
Great singing as usual. I just hate how thin the orchestra was when this show was revived in 2006 in New York. The strings playing the E-flat chord were glaringly absent before Lea starts singing the phrase "I dreamed a dream..."
Wonderful, but I still much prefer On my own... not saying she plays a better Eponine, both roles are great, but I much prefer that song and so of course would rather have it sung by the best. Of course, if could find a production where she plays both roles...;o)
@calmadh alto is not a classical singing voice classification. There are basically contralto, mezzo-soprano, and soprano. Lea is, by comfort zone, and strictly speaking, a mezzo soprano, but she does have the capability to mildly tap into a soprano range such as in the song Pie Jesu. You can look it up on TH-cam. Thanks. :)
She sing beautiful but l am sorry to compare, but the best version of this song is by Ruthie Henshall in the 10th anniversary is AMAZING, flawless, she put a lot of emotion and her voice is PERFECT it give goosebump and bring tears in my eyes sorry!!! but Lea is amazing to and her voice is awesome
Lea's version of I Dreamed a Dream was my favorite until I heard Idina Menzel/Lea Michele's GLEE version. Soooo blessed that I got to see Lea sing this live!!
i think lea sang the song quite well and gave a very good performance. to say that ruthie is the only one who can sing this song is very limiting and an insult to the song.
@missmusicgirl0511 there are 6 dislikes now. these freaks want to hear britney's voice singing this song to the tune of Toxic or Oopss I Did It Again!!! LMAO
I think she sings it fantastically, but characterwise it's almost as if she's a little too immature to play that part. idk. she sings amazing but i just don't get that "fantine" vibe.
Now I know how that witch Ursula in "the Little Mermaid" feels. I wanna cast a spell on Ms. Lea and borrow her voice even for just one day, Boy, I would really have a blast!
If she were in the original cast of the Broadway revival (instead of Daphne Rubin Vega) she would have been nominated for a Tony, perhaps even won.

"as they turn your dreams to shaaaaaaaaaaame" OMG this is very sad. the saddest part of Fantine's life of severe hopelessness.
I think they both did a fine job. Ruthie conveys emotion in her voice, but her expressions seem to focus on the disappointment of it all. Lea, on the other hand, runs the gamut of emotions - sadnesss, joy, anger, fear. And you relate to her. But brava to both!
the best Fantine... hands down!
She's the best. She just bubbles over with expression and it gives me chills. Everything she does she OWNS.
LEA portrayed the role of Fantine very well cuz she is now a mom. She expressed exactly what is written in the book cuz she read it, which made it a fantastic performance... its different when u just sing it without understanding the role.
SIMPLY MOVING PERFORMANCE.
it's a perfect disney princess singing voice. she's amazing.
no doubt she won a tony... she's one of the most talented singers... extraordinary indeed... ^_^
This version gives the song its complete justice! My ears needed to hear this. My heart is happy, thanks Lea! Thanks Foxy!
God, this song just makes me weep! it's absolutely tragic. breaks my heart every time.
"I had a dream my life would be so different from this hell I'm living. So different now from what it seemed..." stunning.
Her voice is perfection... flawless! So emotional, and her enunciation is perfect.
Benchmark performance! I cannot imagine how this could possibly be surpassed. I can vouch for how difficult it is to put this much feeling into a singing performance while maintaining good pitch and musicality. Lea has done it brilliantly here.

One of my favourite vocalists of all time.
i cry everytime is see this.. i love her voice thats full of emotions
Miss Leah is a beast on stage with so much fiery emotions that burn the audience
true.. i always admire her version of any song she performs...
She is just amazing. How can she be so emotive?
she's amazing, no wonder she was casted as Fantine for the 25th anniversary of Les Mis....
I feel like I just saw the face of God. Her voice is amazing...
She can sing Disney all she wants, but her voice has the power of an opera singer. :) Go Lea!
i've never cried to a song...until now.
omg her voice is so amazing.
This is the best rendition of I Dreamed A Dream! I love Lea Salonga!
That was awesome, if there's youtube during her time maybe she's more famous than Susan Boyle.
It doesn't matter who sings it. This song breaks my heart every time I hear it.
I could hardly breathe watching this performance.
She's amazing. Draws you right into the character.
it's the rendering of emotion that makes a singer great.
I love this song and Lea is so awesome. :)
4 people disliked this video. I want to hunt them down and make them listen to this again. Cos no way you can not love her. I love you lea.
the lyrics and Lea's voice make me think of I Still Believe in Miss Saigon
and i cried
I love this song and Lea's voice as well.
lea and ruthie.. they're both great professional singers. i love their performances. the end. ^_^
5 people dont appreciate good quality of songs.. gosh..
Wow! great performance. She's full of emotions. she made me cry. ;-)
amazing voice.just left me wanting more of tht lovely wholesome ,powerful and passionate voice. speechless it left me.
shes so full of emotions
I can still only see her as Eponine, but this is amazing
She's amazing, i really love her..
@28twilightfan , the song's originally from les miserables. here, lea salonga plays fantine, the character who sings this song.
i cried while watching...superb performance!
she's going to be Fantine for the 25th anniversary in London!!!!
@MsFoxycandy
I know Lea Solanga's cousin Ria. She's the director of a theater company that I perform in.
6 people are completely and utterly INSANE!
@Akihikio Brightman is great - no doubt. But I love every aspect of Lea Solonga's voice, and I find her more expressive.
Wow! I'm speechless... :-)
Woahhhhhhhh. Speechless.
this is the best video of lea's "i dreamed a dream" performance. congratulations to the person who recorded this and the one who uploaded if they're not the same. nice work! =)
T_T..lea you're the best!
I LOVE YOU LEA!
It was no Lea 'Singing'..........
Its Lea 'Living' the dream!
Living the words, emotions, & life in that Dream!
-No Match- shall i say!
she's still got it, baby.
Great singing as usual. I just hate how thin the orchestra was when this show was revived in 2006 in New York. The strings playing the E-flat chord were glaringly absent before Lea starts singing the phrase "I dreamed a dream..."
She's just awesome!! The first time I saw this, she took my breath away!
Anyway, I really think she looks like Demi Lovato.=)
I like her much better as Fantine than Eponine.
Wonderful, but I still much prefer On my own... not saying she plays a better Eponine, both roles are great, but I much prefer that song and so of course would rather have it sung by the best.
Of course, if could find a production where she plays both roles...;o)
SUPERB!!!
@28twilightfan this is the 25th anniversary concert at the 02

ONE dislike!? Who was crazy enough to do that!! Lea deserves more likes then TH-cam is capable of holding, not one lousy dislike.
I am so proud to be related to her. :)
OHLEAYOUAMAZINGWOMANYOU.
@28twilightfan I believe this was from the actual Les Mis play in Broadway.
Lea's version of I Dreamed a Dream was my favorite until I heard Idina Menzel/Lea Michele's GLEE version. Soooo blessed that I got to see Lea sing this live!!
i think lea sang the song quite well and gave a very good performance.

i love lea
lea
wow!
@batangwaray1 Yeah, she's def a soprano. her range is too high for the "high" notes here to sound as impressive as they could.
simply fantastic
bravo
I feel bad for the 2 people that disliked this video. They obviously don't know anything about beautiful music.
who's the crazy guy who disliked !?!?!?!?!
Lea is the best singer! proud to be PINOY!
@28twilightfan this is the actual show... that glee copied.
THank you! I love this video of her singing this, very inspiring =]
@Akihikio Brightman has a great voice but was she in les miserable?
(STRAIGHT FACE,DROOLING ! )
wow the ending is WOW
@mabanggo Not rly. Both are good at belting out that song.
As much as I love Lea, I prefer Ruthie Henshall's version. This one is amazing though
Brava!!
@missmusicgirl0511 there are 6 dislikes now. these freaks want to hear britney's voice singing this song to the tune of Toxic or Oopss I Did It Again!!! LMAO
When was this?
I want to marry her!
I think she sings it fantastically, but characterwise it's almost as if she's a little too immature to play that part. idk. she sings amazing but i just don't get that "fantine" vibe.
@OwnArtVideoReviewer sOprano (:
@OwnArtVideoReviewer can you spell soprano correctly, dear?
still the best Ruthie Henshall! :)
Ruthie is much better in this role
I prefer Ruthie Henshall in this role. Sorry Lea but much preferred you in the role of Eponine.
@Paris1832 lmao
It was no Lea 'Singing'..........
