    Tim has many items in his collection which are based around cutlery. Starting with his 'Cutlery Clock'.
    From a trick fork and a trick knife, to forks that revolve in order to help you eat your spaghetti!
    A telescopic fork and spoon for otherwise out of reach items... and a spoon with a knot in the handle. How do they do that?
    A 'negative' fork and spoon, which are actually salad servers.
    A fork and spoon that are linked. You have to untangle them in order to be able to use them. 'Puzzleware' was the name of this product!
    A very unusual butter knife, which has a row of very small holes along the blade. Designed to prevent cold chunks of butter from ripping apart your sandwich! See store.moma.org/en-gb/products...
    A half spoon for people who just want 'just half a spoon of sugar'. And a very unusual spoon to remove eggs from boiling water.
    A nitinol spoon that changes shape when you put it in hot water.
    Finally two forks that have been bent and shaped, so that you can balance one fork on top of the other, and the top one will rotate. A 'fork mobile'.

    The spoon with the knot is associated with a marketing idea from Maggi for instant soups with the slogan "Unvergesslich gut," meaning "unforgettable good," hence the knot in the spoon.

      I'm confused how the slogan correlates with the knot. May be a translation issue?

    • @mrsmrth322

      @@LieseFury As Dave mentioned, one may put a knot in a handkerchief to be reminded of something or not to forget something. The spoon receives the knot to remind you how good the soup is.

      @@LieseFuryeah people used to tie knots around their fingers so they wouldn't forget why they tied the knot in the first place. You can find this being done in Archie Comics written in the 90s. I actually learned a lot from those books growing up as they deal with pubescence and maturity. I would buy them from the thrift store with other comics like Calvin and hobbes, Garfield and japanese Manga

    The knife with the holes is for cold butter, the idea is that the thin strands are easier to spread or warms up quicker with the increased surface area.

    • @lemolea9571
      @lemolea9571 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Are you sure that's actually what it's for? there's a lot of myths about "this is to prevent people using drugs" in public places but the vast majority of them aren't true and have a much simpler more pragmatic use. A cafe wouldn't bother buying specialty spoons for that, they'd just lock the bathrooms - I doubt they have that big of a drug problem and weird spoons won't fix it if they do. I'm sure people can carry their own spoons. Just doesn't make much sense.

  • @Howlox
    @Howlox ปีที่แล้ว

    These are cool. One spoon I saw before that would be good in your collection is that one that melts when put in water. It's made of a specific metal that reacts to water, so when you put it in a cup and stir, the spoon breaks down into a silvery liquid inside. You can then pour that liquid back into a spoon shaped mold and it will harden again as a spoon.

    • @Carrotspy
      @Carrotspy ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Could be a bimetallic strip, where there's two metals with different thermal expansions stacked onto each other. Strips like that are often used as thermometers in various devices.

    • @Deipnosophist_the_Gastronomer
      @Deipnosophist_the_Gastronomer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Carrotspy A bimetallic strip will bend one way when heated and the other way when cooled. That is not what is happening here.
      This is the shape memory effect. A material is 'trained' to 'remember' a shape. When it is cold, it can be deformed into a new shape. But when it is then heated, it will return to the 'remembered' shape.
      You can type 'nitinol' or 'shape memory' into the search bar to find a number of video demonstrations.
