    Blackwood put more characterization into the dog and cat than most authors do for their human characters. I rather like his descriptions of their personalities and actions.

    What a wonderful, textured story, and so well-read, Ian, as always. Blackwood really displayed his attraction to the mystical forces in this one: mind expansion through drugs, incursion by a malevolent spirit, and the wondrous, unseen universe which our animal friends inhabit. It was a bit of a roller coaster ride for me at the end--I first was brought to tears and then to smiles by Flame's (and Smoke's) ordeal. This was a happy ending I truly appreciated.

    I love how all these early 20th and late 19th century writers had such classy lingo. Which I a,m a huge proponent of, and often incorporate such verbiage into my own conversations with moderns, daily,to the consternation of many fAmily members

      More likely than not, they didn't speak as they wrote, except maybe when giving speeches or lectures.

    • @addictiontransfer3731
      @addictiontransfer3731 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Anthropomorphic maybe not entirely. but people didnt have nearly as many solo hobbies ( like tv/video games) back then, and typically everyone's vocabulary, conversational skills, a speaking ability was much greater than it is today since reading books and talking with people were some of the only things most people ever did with themselves outside of work and school. just listen to news clip interviews and shows/movies from the 50s and 60s and its super apparant just how much better the average person's vocabulary is.

    • @Anthropomorphic
      @Anthropomorphic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@addictiontransfer3731 I'd probably agree that people back then were most likely better conversationalists in the sense of having better social skills, on average. I'm not sure their vocabularies were necessarily more extensive, though, and I don't think people actually spoke privately the way characters do in old movies. For one, I don't think dialogue in media was written to be naturalistic in those days. That happened later, as part of a larger trend towards the devaluing of formal speech.
      That's really the main distinction here, I think: speech typically comes in a casual "jeans and t-shirt" form and a more formal "suit and tie" form. Much like it'd be normal to expect a man to wear a suit if they were giving a speech or appearing on TV, it used to be expected that you'd adopt a correspondingly formal style of speech. It was essentially part of dressing up for an occasion. People didn't talk that way in casual conversation, though. In order to really get a sense for how people talked most of the time, you'd basically have to find recordings of people chatting casually without realizing that they're being recorded. My tip: an old radio show from the 40's and 50's called Candid Microphone, which inspired the later TV show.
      Part of the confusion here comes from the fact that American society (and thus much of the rest of the world) has come to devalue formal speech. It's seen as unnatural, and often a sign that someone's trying to scam you. Notice how politicians are increasingly trying to *not* sound like politicians, basically meaning they're trying to speak more casually? And notice how people seem to respond pretty positively to it? I think it's generally said that this trend away from formal speech started in the 60's.

    And this is why you don’t swallow hash, or any cannabis, for that matter.
    When cannabis is digested it creates an effect far stronger than when it is smoked, because the cannabinoids come into contact with digestive enzymes which cause this magnified effect, as opposed to when the cannabinoids are effectively digested by the fire when smoked and are then simply absorbed by the alveoli of the lungs. Paranoia and euphoria are commonly intertwined when trying a large first dose of cannabis. When I first smoked weed, I smoked WAYY WAY too much and all I could do or say is laugh while pacing back in forth while screaming “this is bad.”
