Had to listen to this a second time, I love the very slow progression from joyful boyhood memories to the dreadful realisation of being trapped in a nightmare situation, I think Blackwood’s wonderfully dark stories must have influenced Tolkien and his creation of the kindly but powerful Gandalf! Magnificently read!

An old - supposedly defunct - prison-like school in an isolated village in Germany - what a classic setting for a horror story.
The tale did not let the setting down.
    Thank you.

Ian, the story I'm referring to is about 2 elderly brothers who own a shop.
In the story DR. John Silence was asked to buy a viola for a muscian who just had to have this Viola that the 2 brothers had in their shop.
Unfortunately the viola was not for sale.

Was it just me, or does Mr Blackwood have an awful habit of losing his main character from this books in interest of chasing his phantoms...? 😅 😂
I think quite a few of the John Silence books actually have very little involvement from Dr Silence. 🤫

@@HorrorBabble I love the effort put into the attempt. German is my ancestral language and was my major in a former life, in which years I was blessed with much praise for my skills. Now they collect dust on the shelves of a closed bookshelf, tucked in the back of my mind library, wistful for any whisper of recognition and possibly a small, breeze across their pages.
