    I now have a new style MOLE TRAP posted now.
    This new trap is for terminating the mole as it shoves the dirt up in your yard making the huge mounds / mountains of dirt !
    If you'd like to go and view it.

    I like using a one gallon drywall mud bucket over the set trap with a brick on top of the upside down bucket. Keeps pets out and keeps it dark.

      Yes, luckily, I don't have to worry about pets. And somehow, I didn't have to set one trap last summer at all, and this year is looking to be the same. Either I've eradicated them all, or the word has finally got around to stay out my yard. LOL

    No mercy! Gruesome, but satisfying. We spent 10s of thousands of dollars renovating our yard then the moles came. I hired a guy and has trapped 5 moles on my less than 1/4-acre house and property. They have done some pretty significant damage. I'm going to try my hand. Thanks for the video, I learned a few things.

      Wow, yes, they can be so stinking destructive.
      Glad you found some useful info from my video.
      Just a heads up on the Victor's Out O'sight Traps though. In 2021 they changed their Traps. They are now made of aluminum and they also have a weaker spring. So, I'm not sure if their effectiveness of catching moles now. And they raised the price of the newly designed trap. Ughhhh.
      The old ones weigh 1lb- 3oz. While the new ones weigh 10oz.
      I've got a video in the making of the new ones. But haven't had time to finish it and post it yet.
      Good luck in your quest !!! 👍

Make sure the trap is set and the safety latch is on. Then push the trap into the ground just let the trigger touch the ground lightly. Mash the run down on both sides.

      Hey Ron, yes, I've actually thought of doing this several times over the past couple years. Just haven't really gotten around to trying it out. I guess this year will be the year as I've already spotted a mole working close to the house. And it's actually in the same tunnel system that is in this video. I've always teased and said that they have an interstate tunnel system that comes out of the ajoining woodlot and it is the main tunnel they use to stop in my yard every year. It's still kinda soft in this area. So,,, this just might be the place to set this trap directly over the tunnel.

    You use a flag to mark where the trap is. I use an inverted black plastic bucket over the trap. It actually serves three purposes. One, to mark where the trap is, two, it keeps the dogs from sticking their noses in the trap, and three, it blocks out light without having to put dirt back around the trap and possibly fouling its operation.

      @@GrandmaSezSo Ours are crazy in the wooded area. When I take my garden tractor in there to dump yard waste and what not, the mole mounds are every where I look. Ughhhh !!!
      As far as setting the traps,,,, its important to find the main tunnel the mole is using to go back and forth from it's home to its feeding ground.
      When I find an area that one is working in. I tamp down ALL the tunnels it has made. Then go back to check to see which one it opened back up. This is most likely the main corridor it is taking to and from. When you see just a mess of tunneling going in all directions and just barely under the sod, that is where it was foraging for food and most likely will never go through those tunnels again.
      I have found a tunnel system that is a few inches below the surface and I've caught several moles in the same tunnel year after year. I kid everyone and say that that is their interstate tunnel they all use to get to my lawn.

    I have a field across a ditch from my back yard. Moles love to travel along that ditch and move into my yard. If you know where your moles always come in, you might try one of the two following things, or both.
    First, dig a trench a foot wide by two feet deep perpendicular to where most of the moles are coming in. Buy garden cloth or wire mesh and cut it into 3 foot by however long you need to cover the trench. You make an L shape, two feet deep and one foot sticking out towards the direction the moles come from. You fill with dirt or even rock if you really want to deter them. They come along, hit the wire mesh, try to dig under it, and hit the bottom of the L shape, and give up. It might buy you time if you see them moving along that trench. You could trap them before they figure out a way to get over or under it. Where my yard hits the ditch is about 70 yards long, so I haven't tried this method due to time and cost. I might eventually do it in stages, because I plan to live in my current house for the rest of my life.
    Second, and I have tried this and it works fairly well, is you buy castor oil and dish soap, mix two ounces of castor oil to one ounce of dish soap, as much as you want, mix with water, and spray an area thoroughly. It works as a barrier. The soap helps the castor oil penetrate into the ground with rain or you watering, and the moles get "greasy" fur from the experience as well as having their snacks taste like castor oil. You have to do it once a week for a month to really get the ground saturated with it. After that you can reapply once every 4-6 weeks. I still get moles coming in and have to trap them. It's just helped deter them enough to where I don't have to deal with so many.

    • @MrMike47274

    Question: Why do you tamp down the mole run after setting the trap? Don't you want the mole to use the same tunnel to the trap? Wouldn't tamping down the mole run just make it tear up/dig the soil in another direction? Unless a mole is a good cartographer how would it find it's way back through it's own previous but now collapsed tunnel...phermone scent maybe...or it's urine trail?

    • @MrMike47274
      @MrMike47274  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fallout III, that is a very good question.
      I've done this from day 1 now since I started trapping moles over 5 years ago. I tamp the tunnel back down so i can indeed see if a mole has came back through. If it did come back and got to the trap and then took a detour or simply backed away without going through the trap, I'll see this behavior and adjust my procedure. I've only had 1 mole out of over 75 total avoid one of my traps. My scent perhaps ? Not sure why.
      As far as a mole not going back through a tamped down tunnel. That's how I figure out if they are still using a tunnel or run before setting my trap in the first place. They are like water or electricity I guess. They will take the path of least resistance. Once they have made their tunnels, they have the hard part done. Because busting the sod from the soil is the hardest part for them I suspect. So, when they come back through, it's easy peasy for them. The grass roots are already separated/busted loose from the ground. And since this is already done, they aren't going to damage the yard anymore by using the same tunnel(s) even if they have to reopen it. So, like many creatures that have a territory, they too have trails or in this case tunnels that they use to get from point "A" to point "B". With "A" being their home area or den or whatever to "B" being the hunting ground. After depleteling the hunting ground of food. They will set out from the home region to a different hunting ground looking for food.
      They have one tunnel that is kinda deep that come from the woods next to our yard and out into our yard. Year after I've trapped 2 or 3 moles from this very tunnel. I've dubbed it the " Mole Interstate " that leads to my yard.
      I hope this helps you somewhat.
      Believe me,,, they will open that tunnel back up in a flash if they are still using it.

      I've had this happen a few times myself. There are times when the moles are pushing ( aka bulldozing ) dirt through their tunnels while cleaning their tunnels/dens and such. You might try tamping the tunnel down really good on both sides leading into the trap. That way they'll have to go through and reopen the tunnel again before trying to push their dirt through.
      I set one the other day at my wife's cousins house and I didn't tamp the tunnel down on both sides as it was late and I was in a hurry to get home. Went back next morning to check it and a mole had came through the tunnel and simply went right over the top of the trigger and into the tunnel on other side. Ughhhhh That was a first for me. lol

    Hello. I set my traps yesterday. When I checked them this morning there was also a fresh mound built on top of the trap and the trap hadn't been set off at all :( What did I do wrong? There was a snow fall, but not sure if that would change anything.

    • @MrMike47274
      @MrMike47274  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmmm That's weird. I doubt that the snow had anything to do with it. My only guess would be that your trap just happened to be next to or joining a hole that the mole was using to clear out it's tunnels,,,,,, thus where the hole on the other side of your trap was the one it was using to push dirt up from the ground. And just coincidentally shoved the dirt out and ontop of the trap since it was right there where the hole exited the ground.
      I just bought a trap this summer for that very type of activity as it's very very hard to trap a mole at a mound site. The hole is normally very deep and comes up at a steep angle. I've only manged to catch a mole 1 time at a mound with the Victor's Out O'sight trap.
      Here's a link to my newest mole trapping tool that gets them where they are building their mounds of dirt.

      I hope I've answered your question somewhat. Like I said, that is the only thing I can think of. That the mole just decided to start pushing dirt up at that location or you just happened to set your trap where the mole was planning on pushing dirt up. hehe
      Anyway,,, Thanks for watching and I hope I've shed some light on your situation and you catch that dirty varmint !!!! ;)

      @@julianatacha8536 Yes, during the COLD months it's really hard to find their tunnels as when it gets cold, their food supply ( Insects ) go down deeper into the ground. So, they too have go down deeper to find food and avoid the cold temps. The mounds of dirt are from their cleaning out their tunnels and dens. Which are usually down deep in the ground. I have seen tunnels close to the surface during mild winter days where the temps stay kind high for several days in a row.
      The best way to find their main tunnel that they use is to tamp down all tunnels and check back to see which ones they open back up. When they are hunting for food they will make several tunnels just below the sod ( Grass ) and will never go back into some of thos tunnels again as they were just foraging for food.
      Good luck with your moles,,, happy trapping !!!
      If you have any more questions,, feel free to write me. :)

    I couldnt tell when the trap was tripped, how can you tell?

    • @MrMike47274
      @MrMike47274  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michelle, thanks for asking. I guess I should've pointed this out with a little more detail during the making of this video. Sorry,,,,
      So, if you look at the top of the trap @ 9:00 ( just after I've mentioned about releasing the lil Safety Hook) you can see that the (Frame) pieces on top of the trap are very close together.
      Now go to 10:45 where I go and check on the trap the next morning and if you look closely you can see that the (Frame) top pieces of the trap are now spread apart further. This is how you can tell if it's been tripped or not. And once you've done and seen it a few times you can tell from a distance whether or not it's been tripped to save you a walk to that area of the yard and thus not disturbing any mole that may still be working in the area.
      Hope this helps. Sorry I didn't put more infosense on this part.
      Have a great day and thanks again for your question and thanks for watching also.

      Oh no ! Sorry to hear this. My wife's cousin wasn't having any luck catching any with theirs either a couple years ago. So, I went over and showed them how I set mine. Caught one the next day.
      After they seem me set their trap and explaining to them how I set mine. It removed all doubt that the trap wasn't problem. You just have to make sure it's an active run and that the the lil mound of dirt under the trigger is packed tightly so that when the mole goes under it, that it will trip the trigger.
      I have a couple other types of Traps that other guys use and swear by that I don't have much luck with them either. Kinda depends on the soil type also.
      I've got a guy telling me I need to try the Gopher Hawk out. He's says it's berry's than the Victor trap. Guess I need to try one of those out next.
      Wishing you the best ! 👍👍

    Lowe’s , Home Depot don’t carry them in the store. They only sell repellents. You have to order online and pick up. I think the stores are trying to be politically correct by not selling killing devices because some people would take offense to killing rodents that destroy yards.

      When I first started using these, they were still available at Home Depot & Lowes. Then as you have mentioned, they are only offered by mail delivery now.
      And, I do agree that you are correct on them NOT wanting to offend anyone. I've caught some flack from a few ppl that don't think I should be killing these things. Ughhhh

    Aren't these traps now made in China and don't have the quality of strength to take the animal out?

    • @MrMike47274
      @MrMike47274  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, the trap I'm showing here was made in China too. But, they used Steel and a Stronger spring on those.
      They are still made in China now. But, they are now made from Aluminum I believe and the spring is much weaker. I've not bought and tried out the NEW Traps yet to see how well they perform. I think they started rolling out these NEW weaker Traps last year.
      Thanks for watching and commenting.
      I guess I need to make a new video showing whether the new Traps work as well as the old Traps. 🤔

      Yes, that's one of the unfortunate aspects of most Traps. I've been catching them by hand here lately. The ones catch by hand don't suffer at all. 😉
