  • Lewis and Clark Trail Museum Alexander North Dakota Check out this Small town museum with a haunted past. The museum in Alexander is situated along the Lewis and Clark Trail. The museum opened in 1969 and showcases an impressive collection of homesteader family heirlooms, antique farming equipment, and other items reminiscent of the town's unique history. The collections are housed in the original three-story schoolhouse, which was built in 1914

Russ thank-you so much for posting your visit to the Trail Museum. I had a good friend of mine that I graduated boarding high school with, who was from Williston. The farm wear the ghost is from his family has owned for years. They raise wheat, over two thousand acres. During the summers he would volunteer at the museum. He showed me tons of pictures from their. He also told be that if the museum help does not say good morning to the ghost the displays are all disturbed and moved around, and the staff has to straighten up the mess. Williston is just a small farm town. Most people that live their have to go into Fargo to do any shopping for supplies.

As a member of the Tioga Pirates basketball team in the 1950s I played in the old high school gym in Alexander against the Alexander Comets. I guess the old gym was replaced with that museum pavilion next to the old school. Alexander is one of only a few small towns in ND that has put their old high school to good use as a museum, and they're done a wonderful job of it for a town of only 250 people.

Getting closer to where my Norweigian grandparents homesteaded. Area called Roseglen from what I can determine. My father rarely talked about North Dakota as he was growing up, born in 1915, lucky stiff got caught up in the depression as a teen and into his 20's. CCC was what he talked about, Fort Peck was one place he worked and talked about along with Northern Minnesota. He was born in Valley City, never heard why they left the homestead, but I imagine in the early 1900's farming was tough in that region. I thank Russ for his trip through North Dakota.....

When I see a museum of old farm equipment I wish my late father was around to explain some of the history. He was a South Dakota farmboy born in 1914. Thanks, Russ.

That school building was cool. The best part was the room that was still a classroom. On the subject of squeaky floors, It reminds me of the elementary school I went to in North Dakota. It was a three building campus. The original 1910 school building in the middle, very similar to that building. The 1930s High School building converted to Junior High on one side and the 1950s Elementary wing on the other side. We had to walk from the elementary wing through the old building to get to the gym. The floors in that building were unbelievable, and we would all stomp our feet as hard as we could when walking. The whole building would shake and I still remember the incredible noise it made. But they tore that building down just one month before we moved away. It's nice that this school building has been saved.

I don’t know if you have been to Billings Mt but they have Lewis and Clark places in the area. They also have a huge memorial and burial of Yellowstone Kelly on the bluff above Billings close to the airport. Also a wonderful little museum across from the airport about the history of the area.

Elated that you stopped in Alexander, S.D. to visit the Louis & Clark Museum. Maybe the creaking floors was the Ghost? All that James Bannon had in his pocket when hung was a coin purse, coins, watch, comb, & bullets. I'd love to hook up some Clydesdales & enjoy a sleigh ride with a wool blanket over my lap, & a rich mug of hot cocoa on a frosty wintry day. Never seen a Crop Duster like that. Can't even imagine how it worked. Enjoyed this wonderful day in this quiet little town.

ND is a nice place to visit. But as far as living there we never got used to it, especially the months on end of winter with its icey cold weather & the winds blowing off the Canadian plains. True summer was only a few weeks long, great for trips like you're taking us on now...Medora, TR National Pk & the Badlands....
    Thank you..

Wow, what a great spot! I love local museums like this, filled with all the things the people of the area used through the years, and more than likely staffed by neighborhood volunteers. I always make a point of thanking them for their efforts when I visit. It's definitely going on my list of places to check out when I make it out there hopefully next year.

I live in alexzander and my great grandfather used to go to that museum and I go to the alexzander public school there and we are in 4th grade and got the highest score for star reading and math in the entire school AND finally I was in the parade throwing candy. Alexzander is a good place to live.

I remember when Alexander was still tiny! Some people were trying to talk me into teaching there when there were only 40 kids K-12 in the school district. I visited the town and toured the museum (which was fun). I decided there was no future in the town. Turns out that oil came along and I was very wrong!
Another fun school/museum to visit is further east in Egeland, ND.
My own school district consolidated with a school that was in a building like this. We continued the elementary in that town, so we use a small part of this building, but it is sad to see that most of the building sits empty.

    • @MaxZomboni

I think it's still tiny. Looking at the population on Wikipedia It has doubled in size in the last 20 years but it is still well below the 1940 population of 415.

Awesome museum! Odd that the killer of a family should be immortalized as a ‘ghost’ instead of the family members. I think they would be the ones that would be walking the floors of the afterlife in protest of their murder.
