    How To Change Motor Oil in a Harley Davidson Sportster 1200!! How To Subscribe and Share! It truly helps the channel so much! ** goo.gl/Pjnknj **
    Decided to take you along with me while I change my 2012 Harley Davidson Nightster/Sportster oil. There are things I can do better at, but at the end of the day, I'm saving hundreds of dollars by not taking it to the stealership.
    First, get the bike warm. Take it for a ride for a couple minutes. Get it to operating tempt.
    Second, get pan ready and pull the plug. Take oil cap off too.
    Third, get rags and stuff the oil filter area (see vid). Take filter off by wrench or by hands.
    Fourth, get new filter. Fill halfway, and put LIGHT layer of oil on ring. Insert new one.
    Fifth, put plug back in, and put two quarts in.
    Sixth, pull oil plug and let alittle clean oil come out. Put plug back in.
    Seventh, put oil cap back on, start motorcycle. Let it run alittle. 10-60 seconds.
    Eighth, add half a quart. Run engine for 30-60 seconds. Add the rest. Donezo!

    I use a small piece of cardboard slightly curved with a notch cut out of the top right to make a channel into the pan when changing the filter. usually works great with maybe a drop or 2 on the bike

    Good vid! I was wondering why you had to let some more oil out, then you explained why because you don't want a air bubble. 👍👍👍

    Glad to see that you "burp" the air line. When I pull the plug out of the drain tube, I hold it closed with long needle nose pliers so that I can direct the flow more easily after the plug is out. When the new oil is in, I use the pliers to control the flow when I "burp" the line and they also make it easier and cleaner to replace the plug.
    When pre-filling the oil filter, I fill it to the brim and let it sit while I drain the oil. The media will soak up over half the oil and then I roll the oil filter in my hands to try to soak more oil into the media. Finally, I leave about 1/4 in the filter when I install it. You will be surprised how much oil the media will hold.
    Never fill more than 2.5 quarts until you have checked the oil after the engine is hot. The dipstick should read between 1/2 to 3/4 full. Any more than that will come out of the breather tubes as blow-by. Unless you have your crankcase vented to the atmosphere with a drain tube, you will find oil all over the side of your engine.

    I stick aluminum foil under the filter and protruding outward over the pan - channeling all the oil away from the bike and into the pan. Leaves the bike clean, avoiding the messy clean-up job.

    before oil filter change ,you can slice a plastic pepsi bottle and put it under to protect wiring.

    I have a 2005XL 1200C and the biggest issue I have been having is that the oil filler cap has not been seating properly which causes oil to leak from the top. The cap edges do not align horizontal but they stay vertical when popped down. Any advice?

    Dan, ATGATT. What are you doing riding in a t-shirt and shorts?

    Cool How to. 1. Do you out motor oil in the primary also, like my Buell? 2. A peace of cadboard under the bike will catch any drips on the floor.
    ride safe.

      But does it take motor oil in the primary ? Like 20w50?

    I was wondering if it’s ok to do the oil change while bike on kickstand? Doesn’t have to be straight leveled though?

    • @450rmaniac
      @450rmaniac 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jay.P.F Mcafee fill to between the top and bottom lines if resting on kickstand. Once the bike is level it should come up to the top line. I think 3 quarts on sportsters. Been a while since I have serviced one. While the oil is draining it is a good idea to level the bike for a few minutes to drain as much of the resting oil as possible.

    I need help. First I'm not a Harley Mechanic. I've worked on Japanese bikes all my life. My friend parked her new 883 for almost 8 years after a close call. She now wants to get it ready to try riding again. She asked if I could help her out since money is tight. I figured how hard could an oil change be...........I did everything step by step however there was some strange things. First when I drained her oil there was only a very little that came out. I poured some new oil in to make sure nothing was clogged and the new oil came right out the bottom drain hose no problem. I removed the oil filter,did all those steps correctly, etc. I filled the oil in the oil tank to correct levels. This is now the strange part. I let the bike warm up. Then shut it off to check the level for the last time and before I removed the oil cap I heard a gurgling sound from the oil tank. When I removed the oil cap the oil was frothy. Is the sound normal for Harley and what's up with the frothy oil? I'm doing this as a favor to help her out but once again I know nothing about Harley an do not want to mess anything up.

    you may want to run a heavier wt oil. our Temps are considered extreme for all manufatures. I think Harleys recommend oil wt is 50 or 60 wt in extreme temps.

    • @bigjon4806
      @bigjon4806 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DanDanTheFireman it does make a difference, especially in the sporty, with the run temps in the 300 range. good video sir! I enjoy them.

      I use Lucas full synthetic, its easy to find and haven't had any issues. I think as long as you use a quality oil you'll be fine. if your using a k&n you need to use full syn anyway.
