After I put clean oil back in I pull the drain plug just a sec to rid the system of any possible air pockets . Than top off once more with like amount.
A very professional oil change , I have one of those gadgets that go under the oil filter to catch any oil, about 20bucks. Check the oil again after you've ridden around , nothing wrong with being OCD. You're doing a great job with your vlogs, always interesting & varied. Nothing but rain here in Wales, I have had my Fatboy Lo Special since Feb, bought it new & only dome 600 miles cos it's shit weather here nearly every day 🖒😎
For sure, went and rode the bike after and checked when I got back, oil level was great. Glad you're enjoying the vlogs, thanks for the support! Hope you get some better weather there.
They actually threw in a service plan when I bought the Low Rider S, so I haven't changed my own oil on that thing. It's just easier to take it up the street to Harley and let them do it. Since it's already included. But, whenever that plan runs out, you bet I'll be doing my own service on that, too :)
Yeah, I probably won't go to the same dealer. Finding out after about my tank being 2.1 gallons. Bring up the fact that I'd like to drive to DC without filling up a ton of times, how I want the manual that actually covers repairs and not the "owners" manual. This last one I brought up at least six times. Still didn't get it. I should have let that been the final straw, but my bike is great. I love it and I can't believe it's already time to change the oil. I be damned if I'm paying 400+ for a 15-20 min job.
Gata love Amsoil man, my Dad n I have been dealers for a few years now. Used it in my cobalt for almost all of the 215,000 miles on my ‘10 cobalt, still runs like a top! Works great for drilling holes in steel too 🤣
Puppy house training pee pads work great for catching and soaking up all the oil when removing the oil filter. I also use them when changing oil filter in my airplane which is also horizontal and fine threaded. Wrap the p pad around the oil filter before unscrewing filter. Use painter's tape to help hold it in place if necessary.
Awesome - thanks for a super helpful video! I have a Forty-Eight myself and I was planning on doing an oil change soon. This came at just the right time! ✌️
Nice job! always nice to do ur own oil changes, I do an oil change on my 91 Sporty around 2500 miles, the filter also. Then I service the air cleaner an S&S sideways teardrop. check plugs and gap if needed as well, between 38 and 42 thousandths.
good vid, just 1 add comment, i punch a small hole on the end of filter with a small hole punch 1st at 18:00 hrs (oil starts comming out slow) then 12:00 hrs (lets air in oil gushes out fast) and empty the filter on the tin foil then when u remove the filter ...no drip !
Think I told you before. I work in an oil lab and test oil for metals and contamination. Maybe I’ll send you some sample kits so I can test for you. Let me know
Just a quick tidbit, dunno if anyone has been told otherwise: but it's been shared with me that it's recommended you use conventional motor oil in evolution engines for the sake of longevity. 🤷 Do with that what you will
on your oil filter take and find a funnel that will fit around your filter with the big open end and cut it in half and you have a good filter tool that allows drainage in to the drip pan
Did you use a filter without a Drain Back Valve? I have a 2018 Custom 1200. I use a Bosch 3330 Auto Filter. With the Drain back valve. Never had any issues. Just under 8k Miles in 2 years. What I do is, Use an open bottle to refill the filter. 2 full qt in the tank. Start and check. I have the Harley Temp dipstick. Thing is a PIA to check the level on. Stick part is so much shorter than stock.
Did it ever happen ? My iron just hit 1K & my dealership wants me to pay $500 for the service I rather do the fluids myself and just have them do the inspection
Had bought a new 2014 sporster iron 883 and after 360 miles it sat till last week ...my oil smells like gas However looks fine.. Any suggestions what I should do before I crank it up for the first time?
Would it be a good idea to leave the foil in place until the new filter is installed? Just to keep any of the new primer oil from spilling when attaching the new filter? Thanks.
“Cheers!” Haha hey man, thanks for the helpful and well done video! This helps a lot, very clean methods. Going to get those tools for sure when I get my first Harley.
check out a product called Form-A-Funnel, it looks like a green mat but its formable like the gear ties, got it off my snap-on truck but you can buy it at the store, instead of using foil everytime and having to throw it away afterwards, you can clean this with brake clean and re-use it every time
Why every time when i change the oil in my 2013 harley davidson sporster 1200 is only takes 1 1/2 quart and if i put more it starts leaking when raidig and if i stop and park it keep leaking?
is this normal The manual says refill 3.6 qts for my 05 Harley 1200 sportster custom but it looked pretty full after about 2.5 and the oil light turned off (turns back on when I turn key and off after i hit power)
Hey blockhead, always a great video, just a little piece of advice open the oil pan cap after the drain plug in this way not only you avoid hot oil on your hand but in this way you can see if your gaskets and everything is in good shape and is not letting air in. Hope to se mrs blockhead riding that Harley soon. Deuces bro
Thanks for the vid!! I just purchased a 98 Harley Sportster 1200 and going to change the fluids. I purchased the Mobile 1 oil you have linked, can that be used for the engine and also primary oil? It says it on bottle, however the dude at Harley dealership said I have to use specific primary oil.
There's no need to keep the foil in place. There is a chance you can catch the edge of it when screwing on the new filter. Also, with the foil gone, you can wipe any oil off the bike from the old filter. Extra note: priming the new filter with oil helps prevent a dry start. I usually fill mine all the way up to let it soak into the media before screwing the filter on, then I pour the standing oil back into the new bottle. The filter won't be full but it won't be at the top where it can spill out when screwing on the filter.
Hey man UK rider here doing my full bike test this year came across your videos fell in love with the 883. I'm set to get my own next feb so watching all your videos of the 883 and ones like this are really helpefull. Do you have a playlist for maintenance for the 883? I always worry about overfilling my oil gonna get the LCD display oil read aha
It is very nice you do these vids, 2 thumbs up. Have u ever had to install a new tail-lite on an older sporty like a 91 they use studs and a rather funky washer to grip the studs.
Hello BH! I really wanted to thank you for all those videos about "how to" . Almost found all answers from you :) There is a question about my XL1200X 2011mod, my friend said to me that i have to change transmission oil. with every oil change. is it true? or how? :D
Can anyone give me advice on trying to find the drain plug hose on my 88 sportsrer 1200? I have stared at the exact spot where the hose is supposed to be but it's not there. I pulled a hose towards the front right which I thought it was but hardly any oil came out.
Nice video.I have problems with the start of my iron. already change fuses, charge the battery, and new spark plugs and nothing. I have the suspicion of relays. I do not know if you can help a brother in disgrace.
If you don't have the service records, check the oil. If it's really dark, probably needs to be changed. The oil that I drained from this bike was actually in really good shape, but I changed it anyways b/c I wanted it to be fresh, and I wasn't sure how long the oil had been setting in this bike / when it was last changed.
Hi. I really like your materials 👌🎥🏍️🤘 Could you please give me an answer ... how often do you check the oil level in the iron 883 sporster and whether you add oil or is it enough for you from change to change without refilling. Regards from Poland 🇵🇱🤘🏍️
How does one know which hose to disconnect for draining the oil tank? I am about fed up and just take it to a Harley-Davidson shop and let them do it. No one and I mean no one, shows how you learn which hose is the correct one.
Hey blockhead. Putting the comment here but it’s about the fxdls. I got the burly slammer shocks too and was just checking my oil levels. Have you thought about the dipstick level on the slammer shocks and is it a true reading now ?
mrhoya14 my iron 883, and basically every other sportster, says that on the first 1,000/1,500 miles and then every 5,000 miles (or every year if you live up north and don’t ride year round)
And harley charges 300 for this shit no wonder they r doing bad right now they getting beat out by that yamaha bolt they around 5k amd look just as gud as a harley
After I put clean oil back in I pull the drain plug just a sec to rid the system of any possible air pockets . Than top off once more with like amount.

The fact the dealer charges a lot to do this is outstanding how people can't or don't know how to do it themselves but doing it yourself
Or maybe.... maybe you CAN do it but don't want to void your warranty with not attending Service in the first 2 years.
They actually threw in a service plan when I bought the Low Rider S, so I haven't changed my own oil on that thing. It's just easier to take it up the street to Harley and let them do it. I'm mad you didn't include a link to the foil..
you're supposed to use the orange harley davidson foil. about $20 per sheet.
Puppy house training pee pads work great for catching and soaking up all the oil when removing the oil filter. I also use them when changing oil filter in my airplane which is also horizontal and fine threaded. Wrap the p pad around the oil filter before unscrewing filter. Awesome - thanks for a super helpful video! I have a Forty-Eight myself and I was planning on doing an oil change soon. This came at just the right time! ✌️
You're welcome, glad to help!
Just changed my oil for the first time, thanks blockhead for making this an easier process
Nice job! always nice to do ur own oil changes, I do an oil change on my 91 Sporty around 2500
miles, the filter also. Then I service the air cleaner an S&S sideways teardrop. check plugs and
gap if needed as well, between 38 and 42 thousandths.
Nicely done! I use cardboard but gonna try the foil, nice tip.
Thank you! Yeah the foil works pretty well since it's a bit more malleable than cardboard, but I've used cardboard before as well :)
That foil trick put a song in my head...
"Real men of genius!"
I am a Amsoil Dealer You are Right you are using the best oil on the market.
over priced

Dumb question but when checking dipstick do you push the pop-up down? Or just screw it in without pushing down to check? Thanks
Did you use a filter without a Drain Back Valve? I have a 2018 Custom 1200. I use a Bosch 3330 Auto Filter. With the Drain back valve. Never had any issues. Just under 8k Miles in 2 years. Wassup blockhead are you going to do a primary/transmission fluid change?
Yup, I'll be doing that soon! I got lazy and didn't end up doing it, haha
BLOCKHEAD nice looking forward to it!
How soon is soon good sir?
Did it ever happen ? My iron just hit 1K & my dealership wants me to pay $500 for the service I rather do the fluids myself and just have them do the inspection
Had bought a new 2014 sporster iron 883 and after 360 miles it sat till last week ...my oil smells like gas However looks fine.. Any suggestions what I should do before I crank it up for the first time?
I like the aluminum foil trick, gonna try it on my sporty.
Would it be a good idea to leave the foil in place until the new filter is installed? Just to keep any of the new primer oil from spilling when attaching the new filter? Thanks.
“Cheers!” Haha hey man, thanks for the helpful and well done video! This helps a lot, very clean methods. Going to get those tools for sure when I get my first Harley.
do you have to change the oil filter everytime you do a oil change ?
check out a product called Form-A-Funnel, it looks like a green mat but its formable like the gear ties, got it off my snap-on truck but you can buy it at the store, instead of using foil everytime and having to throw it away afterwards, you can clean this with brake clean and re-use it every time
Nice! I'll look into that!
so only 2 quart for the oil change right? i just got 2019 harley 48.
Hey what kind of bike stand is that? Can you do a video on that bike stand? Definitely a better approach than on the ground.
Thanks. I like the foil trick. Are you going to do one on the transmission fluid change. Would like to you tricks on that too.
Thanks for the tricks and info. Does the 883 have an inside engine debris magnet ? To collect the fine particles inside the engine. Thanks
Why every time when i change the oil in my 2013 harley davidson sporster 1200 is only takes 1 1/2 quart and if i put more it starts leaking when raidig and if i stop and park it keep leaking?

gm, blockhead thank you for the demo, are all the drain plugs in the same general area??
How are you using a rear stand on a harley? Every place ive asked about them said its not possible
It was a tight damn fit b/c it was so wide, probably nearly reached the limits of the rear stand, but it worked! haha
Hey blockhead, always a great video, just a little piece of advice open the oil pan cap after the drain plug in this way not only you avoid hot oil on your hand but in this way you can see if your gaskets and everything is in good shape and is not letting air in. Good advice! I'll do this next time :)
Cool ... like the foil tip as well ... sharp seat on that bike ... what is the brand name on that?
Why did my oil filter come with an O-ring? Is the O-ring necessary on the 1200 sportster 2010?
My oil change kit came with two smaller o rings. Where do these go ? I ride a 2015 iron883
Hello, what tyre size is on your Harley?
Thanks for the vid!! I just purchased a 98 Harley Sportster 1200 and going to change the fluids. I purchased the Mobile 1 oil you have linked, can that be used for the engine and also primary oil? It says it on bottle, however the dude at Harley dealership said I have to use specific primary oil.
excellent, mellow, good teaching. a little better lighting would let us in even more
What camera do you use? And also how does your mic work? Do you use the camera mic? Or have another in the helmet?
In this video, it's a GoPro with a mic adapter and using an external Sony ECM lav mic.
Can you please share the info for the red jack/stand?
Have you got a link to the foil?
Good tip for the alluminum foil, but, why did you remove it before install New filter
There's no need to keep the foil in place. There is a chance you can catch the edge of it when screwing on the new filter. Also, with the foil gone, you can wipe any oil off the bike from the old filter. Extra note: priming the new filter with oil helps prevent a dry start. all that work with the foal than he ends up spilling when pouring oil into filter defeating the whole purpose! oh well next time
What do you think about Valvoline 20w50 4 stroke for oil change?
Love the foil trick
Outdoorsnomad 03 You can use plastic bottle cut in half ;)
Hey man UK rider here doing my full bike test this year came across your videos fell in love with the 883. Hey that oil funnel ships to canada. Going to order one. Great little tool
Looking for video on transmission fluid change. Did you do this? I can't find video?
What kind of camera and mount are you using for this video? Love it!!!
Nice video.I have problems with the start of my iron. already change fuses, charge the battery, and new spark plugs and nothing. I have the suspicion of relays. I do not know if you can help a brother in disgrace.
check your fuel filter and air filter. an engine choked by either of those will cause hard starts.
Joshua Lorimer ok thanks, I'll try too a friend says he can see false ground contact
When/How often should you change your oil? Just got a 2016 883 with 3000 miles on it - not sure if its been serviced yet.
If you don't have the service records, check the oil. If it's really dark, probably needs to be changed. What lift are you using?
Seen that funnel and it just reminded me that I never used it for a oil funnel. It was my beer bong.
Thanks! I suppose it's the same for the iron.
Pretty much identical. Check your manual for oil capacity.
BLOCKHEAD Thanks dude, good job. Ride for me under the sun of Florida... Here in Brittany France, too much rain. Peace ✌
Clean looking sportster
Danke
Hey blockhead. Putting the comment here but it’s about the fxdls. I got the burly slammer shocks too and was just checking my oil levels. Have you thought about the dipstick level on the slammer shocks and is it a true reading now ?
Every how many miles do i need an oil change?

Awesome funnel, just ordered one now. Thanks for the reccomendation
Which oil do you recommend? I have a 17 sportster 48
Watch the video you just commented on and you'll get your answer.
@@johnnyisahermit why?
The foil is a good idea never use that before I’m going to try it
2.8qts fluid capacity
How many miles between oil changes?
25K
Just changed oil on 1200c - manual calls for 2 quarts but now no oil on dipstick after change ... wtf
what you smoking? puff puff
Gracias por el video man everything well explained! 👌🏽✌🏼
How Manny quarts for sporster 883 2017???
6
very informative and helpful should have specified year ad model of sportster , like 48 or iron
Model and year of Sportster is in the description, and mentioned in the video.
Thanks from Germany
Yo yo blkhed...wasaaappp hammie ✌
Harbor Freight lift?
Matthew Clifford yeah what bike stand lift is that?
Thanks Block
Thanks for posting the video man. God bless in Jesus' name!
tin foil handy idea cheers
Aluminum Foil trick is clutch as fuck
I always fill my filter with oil before I install
Dam I wish I knew about that foil tip years ago ha ha
Cut a 2 liter plastic bottle in half to catch oil drip from filter.
Like the foil trick
Sweet idea with the foil. Now I don't have to bitch and cuss every time the oil drips all over everything underneath the filter.
🤘 Blockheads unite 🤘
Jason Doucette ✊
Blockheaaads, assemble! (said like in Anchorman followed by blowing a conch shell)
Mobil 1
You definitely need to have a bigger garage...lol
I agree! Goals AF
When my funnel came in the mail my boys thought it was a beer bong. Now my Harley can’t run a straight line..
Any plans on bikini fairings ?
Hmmm don't believe so but Ms Block is calling the shots :)
Holds 3.0 quarts !!!!
Mobil V Twin is far better. Check independent analysis. Number one ingredient in Amsoil is Koolaid.
Zach false.
nobama run what you want. That's why I don't buy used vehicles.
Check out various lab tests, amsoil destroys Mobil everytime. All 4 of my vehicles have Amsoil. Works great!
Been using Mobil 1 on my cars , bikes , trucks , suvs for over 20 years , not saying that Amsoil is a bad product but Mobil 1 is superb
Credibility lost when you said #1 ingredient is Koolaid. I love Koolaid. OH YEAAAAH!
Pretty simple. These idiots at the Harley dealership are asking over 400 dollars for an oil change.
3 qts my man
Mobil1 is just fine as well. Take off the smog junk also, its useless.
steher what smog junk? I’m interested. Have the same bike.
hey blockhead!!!
Does he have a Texas flag in his garage??
And harley charges 300 for this shit no wonder they r doing bad right now they getting beat out by that yamaha bolt they around 5k amd look just as gud as a harley
