Beam DD with Torpedos is my favourite fleet, i use the extra health modules for them - command guided - direct fire. Works like a charm when paired with the beams

I've been trying a somewhat similar build but instead of a direct fire fleet, it's a yub nub fleet with cruise ARAD / ACT torpedoes
It works very well, until someone brings Defenders, then it doesn't work.
