Just a note for anyone struggling on the second boss- the 2019 version of fusion 360 has the "chain faces" options reversed. In this video Lars selects the second option "extend faces" while 2019 version it is set to "extend faces" as default (took me about 15 minutes to realize why it wasnt working) Same issue when you extrude the center out- "how the software knows to extrude past the radius" Again, in the video fusion 360 has "chain faces" as default while the 2019 version has "extend faces" as default. Simply select "chain faces" option and it will extrude past the fillets when you "extend to object" and select the inner face
Perfect thank you, this stumped me too. Anything like this going wrong at: At 10:36 - it's not cutting away the 2 parts on the left and right. The part "software smart enough to cut away" well it didn't on mine :( Any ideas why?
For those of you running into issues with cutting the extra bit of geometry out at around the 15:00 mark here's why this is going wrong and how to fix it: In the step before the mirror we make the original screw cylinder. Go back and edit that feature. At the bottom of the Edit Feature panel you'll see a field named "Operation". In the newer F360 versions this apparently defaults to "New Body". This needs to be set to "Join". As someone who's literal first port of call after download F360 for the first time was this video's series, I think the difference is that "New Body" makes the cylinder a NEW object, a new item if you will whereas "Join" makes it a part of the box, I think this is the same thing as using the "To Object" measurement instead of distance for cutting the holes for example. If you don't set it to "Join" you'll run into issues with the cutting of the mirrored cylinder and with the Fillet at around the 16:00 minute mark. You can't do a Fillet like the one show between 2 different pieces of geometry, they need to be the same piece.
Unfortunately that has nothing to do with newer versions of Fusion, at 12:46 he changed from new body to join and said nothing, that was also preventing us from making the fillet at 16:00. He really dropped the ball on that one, specially in a tutorial for absolute beginners in a software so finicky for details that doesn't tell you what you are doing wrong.
Okay so I just wanna help with the extend at 9:14 and 10:40 At 9:14 you should use Extend Faces At 10:40 you should Chain faces Dont know why but thats how I solved it =)
"Chain Faces" is the name of the function as I understand it, and "Selected Face" & "Extended Faces" are the two alternatives of that function. I'm a beginner and I got confused by it, but that is how I interpret it.
Great tutorial! Really loving it. Spend hour with sketchUp and this just makes it so much easier. I had an issue 15:10 and found out what it was. Just moving the extrude option to the right wasn't enough. Steps I had to do: - move the extrude tag to the right end - right click on the tag and select edit feature - search for the option "Objects to cut" and select the new object you also want to cut
As I understand it, both icons are alternatives to the function "chain faces", the left one is "selected face" and the right one is "to adjacent faces" (this on my version of Fusion 2.0.10940). However, to my inexperienced mind, the functions look swapped, the "selected face" is doing it right for me by following the chamfer, while the "to adjacent faces" ignores the chamfer and leaves a bit open". It may be, very likely actually 😁, that I just understand it wrong, but it seems off to me. Anyone that can shed some light on it, is more than welcome to comment. EDIT: I think I got it now, it goes through the wall into the inner flat surface. What I would like to be able to do tho, is to have the extrusion go exactly on the outer chamfer as it seems the more appropriate place to have it. I mean, it shouldn't have to go "into the box", rather just start from the outside surface? Ah well, I seem to be ranting a bit. I'll learn more and may come back to just remove this whole comment when I see the light 😁
Almost gave up on Fusion, the tutorial on their own site works wit outdated software, explains all kinds of stuff that's not needed for basic modeling and just made it look more complicated than it needed to be for what I wanted to do with it. I'm coming from 3ds max and that was too limited for designing precision stuff for 3D printing. Now thanks to your extremely well explained tutorial I feel new energy to continue this learning curve and not switch to other software. Thanks!
Lars does an outstanding job with these how-to videos. It is unfortunate that they are now 5+ years old and Fusion 360 has changed enough to make following along difficult at points. For example, I was able to successfully follow along through the first video, and through the 2nd video until it came time to extrude the hole on the side piece. It did not extrude through thru the fillets of the inside walls as in Lars' example. Then when it came time to move that extrusion forward in order to extrude through the mirrored piece for the 2nd screw, that did not work at all. Then when it came time to add fillets to those screw mounts, I could not get that to work. That's where I stopped for today; I will pick up where I left off tomorrow. Lars, if you are still keeping up on these comments, please, please, please consider re-doing these videos using the 2023 version of Fusion 360. You have a marvelous way of presenting these in a form which makes it easy to follow along (albeit with pauses). These videos are far more instructional than any of the books I've seen reviews of.
I learned you really have to pay attention to the details of what he is clicking on being that fusion has updates regularly. For example I was having trouble with the extrusion on the second hole and the "chain faces" until I realized in the current version the two icons are in switched positions from the version lars is using and are called "extend". This takes place around 9:35.
For the cylinder he says “chain faces” but clicks on “extend faces”. The icons have switched places in the newer version so that helps to confuse things. For the hole you have to make sure you select “chain faces” to cut through the fillet inside. He doesn’t do that step as his icon is already pre-selected in the older version. I love these tutorials though! Easy to follow and helps me a lot. Thanks!
I don't understand why software developers always moves menus around,Switching places and changing names in newer versions. They should limit it to every 10 years or so you don't have relearn all the time.
For anyone wondering and struggling with the inner circle not cutting past the radius its because in his version the two buttons to select face and to adjacent faces are swapped around and so by default ours are opposite, your welcome.
I just recently started trying to learn Fusion 360. Your tutorials have been immensely helpful. Thank you so much not only for making them, but for providing them out to the public.
literally laughing out loud as I filleted the corners in the first video, I can't believe how fun this is. After suffering with tinkercad for 2+ years this is amazing. Thank you for the excellent videos, the UI differences are a tad frustrating but obviously out of your control!
Your tutorial has been very informative. Just a note for anyone else, if you are having issues with the second hole not creating those side pieces, try using the default option instead of chaining, and use chaining when you cut the hole. (I guess Fusion 360 changed since 2016 that broke those methods)
At 9:33, he's using the "Extend Faces" not "Chain Faces". If you pause the video when he hovers over the button you can see this. In newer versions of Fusion these buttons are swapped so if you click on the same button he does in this video it's not going to work. This is also the case at 10:30, for newer versions the "Extend Faces" is the default so you'll need to switch to "Chain Faces" to make the extrusion cut through the radius.
Thankyou so much for this comment, I spent probably 15/20 minutes figuring out where the hell I went wrong because I was getting error messages and it wasn’t working
For anyone wondering why you can't extrude the first circle out all the way. What fixed it for me was going to the sector anlysis and pulling it far out. It seemed to be constraining me to where I could extrude.
I am following along and having reached to near the end of this tutorial I am amazed. High quality presentation and very informative. But a few things were not working right. I figured it was something I had done. Thanks to many comments here and in part 3 I pieced it together and wanted to summarize for anyone else following along in the future. I get that a lot has likely happened in 7 years with the development of software, but it felt like it was a configuration or option and it looks to me like either I missed it or the default changed... Either way the answers were here from other commenters and they worked for me. The problems: #1- When I moved the cut for the second boss to the end and it cuts thru as it did originally. So the second screw cylinder area that was mirrored is visible and still present hanging down into the cutout hole. #2- The second issue and where I got stuck is the fillet for the screw stand outs. I can select the 4 corners and make a fillet but it pulls it in tighter for an even sharper cutout between the main box body and the screw cylinder rather than rounding it our like here in this video. The Fillet control panel is now totally different than in the version used in this video The answer for these 2 problems was posted by the user: @curiousGuy801 Major kudos to him for posting a comment with his solution. When I added the screw bosses by extruding the cylinder they became different bodies. Of course a cut on 1 body wouldn't impact the other. And the strangeness on the fillets seems to have been just that as well. 2 Bodies clearly have a different default behavior. What I did was go back thru the time-line. (Wow! Lars is so right!) The power of this parametric modelling is pretty darn impressive. I edited the feature where it was extruded and in the Operation command selected the "join" option rather than the default of create a "new body". It looked the same to me in general. But on closer inspection a small black line that had been present in the cutout of the screw boss was gone, and the top surface when selected highlighted all of it. So it was now 1 connected surface. Once this was done I went back to on the timeline to the latest and added the fillets for the 400th time and Bingo! it was perfect. Such a simple issue but it cause me some real trouble making it match. I wanted to share what I found in the comments spread across these videos. Amazing tool, amazing tutorial!
Thank you Lars. I started with the official Autodesk videos and found them tedious and frankly, out of touch with many beginners needs. Yours by contrast, start by solving a specific relatable problem, you start with basic steps and gradually introduce complexity where it is needed. You have turned Fusion 360 from an impenetrable wall of confusion to a tool I can and want to use. Thank you again.
Excellent video. Had some trouble with operation @ 9:37. Discovered that on version 2.0.9442 it requires "Extend Faces" be selected, not "Chain Faces". Looking forward to discovering how to use "Chain Faces"....ok, editing comment, discovered where "Chain Faces" is used. @10:42 when making the center hole, need to enable "Chain Faces" instead of "Extend Faces", then it completes the operation correctly. Something changed in the software over years apparently.
Lars, I had a problem with my second connector not fitting the pipe correctly. I went over this about 3 times until I saw about 9:30 you said "Chain Faces" but you chose Extend Faces. On my copy the 2 options in the Edit Feature dialog are reversed. I thought this might help someone who is following this and looked quickly. I got the warning that went away on yours when you moved it from Chain to Extend. And at 10:40, the default should be Chain Faces and not Extend faces. Not your fault, they switched the icons and what is default.
Lars, thanks so much for your style of teaching. I'm a dinosaur that spent 15yrs in ACAD and now learning this software has been a struggle, I keep wanting to use my old commands. It's a new world but you are making it a bit easier to digest!
I blindly followed and adapted another tutorial to enable me to design something quick. Going through this tutorial afterwards was excellent in explaining all the bits I'd done before but not quite understood fully. Your explanations were clear and made perfect sense. Thanks for this :)
nice video. but in 9:36 you say you select chain faces when you actualy select extend faces. it will be great if you can edit or add it some how. thanks.
For people having an issue when creating the first circle at roughly 9:30. In the chain face section you actually choose extend face. Then when making the second “inner” circle and “push/pull” to the “object” you then choose chain face in the chain face section. I hope this made sense.
In addition to that, make sure the "Operation" down the bottom of the Edit Feature box has "Join" selected when extending these faces, then also make sure "Cut" is selected when creating the inner circle.
Tyler Bergh he as another video about navigation. But in the settings if you click your name you can change how rotation is performed. I set my preference to be like tinkercad. So then you can use the right mouse button (click and hold) that rotates around the object. Pressing and holding the scroll button (on the mouse) pans. I’d assume right now your settings are default. So if you hold the shift key and I think the scroll it will allow you to rotate around. But I’d recommend you find that video regarding navigation, cuz I’m a noob still lol
critical step at 9:30 to choose "Extend"! faces not "chain" faces as he says out loud in the tut. He actually chooses "extend" but accidentally says "chain". everything works better after that. Also - at 12:30 where he extrudes the small circle on top, his circle merges its face with the top surface of the box, but mine did not do that. After starting over, and following every step carefully again, it worked just as his does in the video - no reason why?! But it finally worked, so that moving the hole's "extrude" feature on the time line will cut the mirrored object. It wouldn't work the first time I tried it.
Funny, i was also stuck on this step. The two icons seemd to be swapped in my fusion 360 client, but it was indeed the "extend faces" when you hover over your mouse :)!
At 10:41 when cutting the second of the pipes into the box, and it also cuts at the inside bevel, it's because of the Chain Faces setting being set as To Adjacent Faces, not To Selected Face.
This was awesome, had some difficulty with running with this as the program has changed, but I got to the part where he's like yeah, the program is smart enough to know to cut the sides, and mine literally didn't. First comment I see if yours, and the exact solution, so thank you :)
On the second hole that is extruded in, you have to extend and choose option "to adjacent faces" if had not previously in order for the edges of the hole to remove the fillets.
Have tried ten times same error: Warning: Some profiles failed to create tool bodies Cannot extend extrusion to object. The extrusion profile falls outside the boundary of the selected body. Select a face or plane instead, or adjust the profile so that it falls inside the boundary of the selected body
Excellent tutorial, but I figured out a few tricks that make this drawing a little easier. This was my first time working with Fusion 360 and I absolutely couldn't have done it without you. After successfully completing my first drawing, I thought about the order of operations and came up with an easier way. On my the second one I did all the extrusions, including the bosses for the screws, before doing the filets or cutting any of the holes. Then I punched out the holes and did all the filets, again, the program knows not to interfere with the inside edges of the end hole when you do the filets. Doing it this way you don't have to do the extra steps repairing the end extrusion with "chain faces" and you won't have to go back and cut the hole through the end a second time.
This is the best series of fusion 360 lessons I've ever watched on the internet. Although the user interface for this software have changed, the commands haven't changed and this video is still relevant even today 2023. May you continue the good work
9:20 For those of you having issues with the second circle two-sided not working with the instructions, seems you don't want to chain those faces as it does not work for me. If you also have trouble with around 10:30 where the software doesn't "just know", chain those faces instead.
@@keanudeleon7933 make sure when it's complete with how I said to do it that you are viewing the full timeline and they it was all in order. There shouldn't be one. Let me know if you get stuck
I am doing this in January 2021 with the newest version. It seems some defaults changed. At 10:40 your hole is automatically correct. In my current version of the program I have to select Chain Faces: Chain Faces. The other option is Extend Faces.
I just watched #1 and #2 after playing with the program, beforehand. It was like night and day, you are a master teacher. Thank you so much for the great effort that you put into your videos. Now you have gotten me hooked. Watch, draw, watch, draw, repeat, repeat. Great job.
Hey Lars. Thank you so much for this tutorials. I am an old school guy who used autocad more than a decade ago for structural engineering designs and after which changed many tracks to be a professional IT consultant. Now out of personal interest was doing a bit of carpentery and found this fusion tool. Many thanks for patient teaching on how to use the application. Esp the way you show the short cuts instead of the menu driven options. Hoping to learn more. Thanks.
For the newer version (Jan 2018) do not select chain faces for the outer extrusion. When you do the inner extrusion for the 'hole', THEN select chain faces, and the little inner wall slivers will go away.
How are you able to get the outer wall slivers to go away? I'm getting an Error :Tool Body Creation Failed" when chain faces for the outer extrusion. I'm using 2.0.5350 version.
@sumanta try to extrude the outer circle then try "chain faces" if it gives you an error leave it on "extend faces". Then create a sketch on the circle. On the sketch create another circle then extrude. Push the extrude arrow backwards and on the extent menu, change it to object. Hope this helps I don't really know how to explain in writing.
@@kylejoyner5701 After posting the solution for smoothing the outside, I found that I still had a problem on the INSIDE of the box. The solution for that was to ditch his technique for chaining faces altogether. Instead, leave off the fillets for that end of the box until after you have completed adding the second tube. Then add the fillets. Worked for me. I wonder if his technique fails for me because of my video card's inadequacies. I'll probably never know.
Perfect mate ! Using a real life object like that is just the perfect way to show us how to use Fusion. Plus you have the right pace and you do explain every single thing you are doing. Keep up the good work and thanks again !
when i do the chain face thing at 9:30 i get an error saying extent Boolean fail. the termination entity might not be fully intersected with the tool body built along operation direction. any help?
If you watch the video closely, you can see that he clicks "extend faces" but mistakenly said "chain faces." When you get to the next step at 10:34, make sure you change it back to "chain faces" or you will have a problem with that step.
Just finished this part, extremely helpful and well put together. Thank you! I do have to say, the software version I am using (v2.0.8335) has a number of differences in controls, GUI, terms, even button locations (chains...). So if someone new is watching these awesome training videos, be prepared for some difference. Good news, you can figure them out and be successful.
Hi Lars. Great videos! I just need help on one part. The moment I attempt to draw the second side to fill the little gaps on the circle and Chain faces it presents me with a warning "Some profiles failed to create tool bodies". Any ideas on the cause of this. It also does not complete the desired action.
9:20 the edit will not fill the gap. I get the warning that there is a failure but have no idea how to correct it. I even started from scratch. Any suggestions. Using latest version as of 4-26-20
I'm getting a warning and error when I try to click chain faces to fill in the little sections for the extrusion done at 9:46 in the video. The error I'm getting is "some profiles failed to create tool bodies"
Just wanted to say thanks! I’ve watched the first two and followed along and with a couple minor version changes, everything is spot on. I have a model that looks exactly like what you have. It’s helpful to talk out step by step like you are and not assuming we already know something. This is perfect!!
These videos are great but I'd love to see them updated with the same design. I can't seem to get past extruding my circle. Even if I type in 18mm, it only extruded a couple of my, and then I can't seem to add another circle on top to cut back through.
I can't get the mirror command to work.. I get the grayed out part on the other side like in the video but when i click ok it places it on the long side instead, ugh..
When I try and use extend object to adjacent faces in edit object for the last hole, I get an error code and have to just add the 4mm for body. Also, I am using a newer version possibly because the "Chain Faces" is actually "Extend," on my version.
You, sir are a great teacher. I have been modeling for many years using TurboCad. I am going to switch to Fusion 360, not only for myself, but for teaching my son who has a great opportunity to get into CAD and CAM. Thank you for taking so much time to explain. A good teacher conveys the concepts directly and concisely. I can't wait to continue with your videos.
excellent tutorial. i got stuck in part 2. min 9 - the intersection part. program keeps giving me error "Warning: Extrude6 1 Reference FailuresExtent boolean fail. The termination entity might be not fully intersected with the tool body built along the operation direction 1 Reference FailuresSome profiles failed to create tool bodies ". Can you tell me what i.m doing wrong? video is very straight forward, and can't see what i am doing wrong
@@gth77s Not only that but in my version they actually swapped the two functions around, so now even though he says the wrong thing he is in fact clicking on the right hand icon which obviously briefly tool-tips with the correct name. And since I'm literally trying to match him click for click, it had me going round a loop for a bit before noticing the oh so subtle difference. Just goes to show that even a such a simple and easy to follow and understand tutorial can send you round the bend. Lol.
Thank you Lars. I just started with Fusion 360 yesterday (first time with CAD). After each task you did, I paused and then tried it myself with 360. You did a fantastic job at introducing concepts. This is a great way to learn Fusion 360.Thank you very much for this series of turorials.
I'm not sure if 2 sided push/pull feature has changed but when I do this as Lars instructs, I get an error. Message says cannot extend extrusion to object. The extrusion profile falls outside the boundary of the selected body.
@ 9:40 I cannot get "chain faces" command to work. Keep getting warning "some profiles failed to create tool bodies". Does the newest version work different?
Hello, great video so far. Am on 2:35 and when I follow your steps of creating the circle. My circle doesn't turn black, it stays blue. I followed exactly what you did with that part.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch! Go and click your name in the upper right and select preferences. Then, click Preview in the left dialog box and check the first item "Sketch- color sketch geometry based on constraint status." I did not realize that was made the difference on the line color when recording the video :-)
Complete noob here to Fusion360 and for that matter any kind of real CAD software. I've been building this with you through the videos and I must say it has helped tremendously to understand some of the basic functions! The software has definitely gone through some changes in the past few years as several of the visuals on the menus is changed and some of the wording as well. At around 10:30 in the video you extrude the cutout for the outer circle as "two side" and "to object". In the current version of Fusion360 this threw a warning for me once I clicked "Chain Faces" - something along the lines of not being able to create the boolean operation. After several failed attempts I opted to extrude "two side" to 4mm on side 2, I then drew my cut out circle and extruded in "one side" and "to object" and "chain face" to the back wall. This successfully made my cutout without throwing any errors, though it does add an extra step. I believe what happened was Fusion360 was not linking the two half moons through the model to the interior, the top and bottom of the middle circle line's stayed red and I could not find a way to select more than one object. Either way, I am learning and that is what is important!
When I try to press pull that first circle out, it becomes highlighted red and does not extrude outward. It does let me pull it inward, but not out. And it’s definitely on the outer face of the box.
Mr. Christensen, I have tried to pull the second boss in this video countless times, and I cannot connect the little overhangs on the sides of the boss. I am using the latest update in a windows 10 platform and this version is slightly different than the one you are using in this video. HELP!
So at @9:30 - in the latest version of Fusion360, “chain faces” is different, and the buttons are swapped, and the default (for me, at least) was already the appropriate setting (for the selected face, not adjacent faces). You can tell because in the video he gets an error with the way it is originally set, and it’s the error you will see if you switch it from the default. I don’t have it in front of me atm but I hope that clarifies enough to help someone else.
No matter how I have played with those buttons, I cannot get side 2 of the extrusion to join with that inner face. Then of course when I pull the hole through the feature it doesnt go all the way through the inner fillets. Ive spent way too much time trying to figure this one out lol.
10:34 you said it magically cuts past the radius without explaining why. In the version I just downloaded that did not happen automatically, so I had to find how to do it. I noticed the "Chain Faces" option of the "Extrude" list on the right was selected different than yours, so I changed it and now my version is as smart as yours.
Hey so at 2:37 Lars does a press pull on the circle but when I try doing a press pull it only lets me pull it up to 10mm then it gives me this pink with black stripes on face of the circle and then it won't increase in size anymore. Why is that? Thanks
I had a lot of problems at 2:50 with the extrusion. I had inspected it before in the previous video, following along. This caused the extrusion to be clipped at the front plane. To solve it: click the arrow near the Analysis folder on the left and hit the lightbulb near the section. Now it will come out.
DOUBLE THANKYOU!!!!! HA! Was struggling with this for ages. I ended up deleting the 'Section' that had been created under analysis as an extra precaution. Will that cause me issues in the future??? I dunno! I'll find out!
10:42 Pull doesnt cut into internal bevel faces when selecting 'To face'? I have copied you step for step but it does not cut into the internal bevel like yours "knows" I fixed it by just dragging the PULL past the face to ensure its cutting out the entire circle, but I would like to learn how to get past this in a way like you say, you dont want to interfere with lots of PULL objects past their object limit.. how to cut it properly? I am guessing there is a error with the face inside the box you select because its two other faces you are trying to cut at the same time, is there a way of selecting multiple faces? to 'Pull to obect'... help? to?
I have the same problem, the fix to me is to select "Chain Faces" in the menu... drive.google.com/file/d/1qUiHdlJZ5jWL8MaF8H-sEA7DG8pz3n3f/view?usp=sharing
Best tutorial ever, I was honestly reluctant to use this software because of the learning curve, but 40 mins in and youve guided me effortlessly through basic functions.
Somehow this guy makes me feel alright and at peace. Also learnt some useful stuff along the way hahah
Trust in Jesus Christ
Just a note for anyone struggling on the second boss- the 2019 version of fusion 360 has the "chain faces" options reversed. In this video Lars selects the second option "extend faces" while 2019 version it is set to "extend faces" as default (took me about 15 minutes to realize why it wasnt working)
Same issue when you extrude the center out- "how the software knows to extrude past the radius"
Again, in the video fusion 360 has "chain faces" as default while the 2019 version has "extend faces" as default. Simply select "chain faces" option and it will extrude past the fillets when you "extend to object" and select the inner face
thanks !!!! i tryed this like 10 times.. and finally read the comments!
Perfect thank you, this stumped me too.
Anything like this going wrong at:
At 10:36 - it's not cutting away the 2 parts on the left and right. The part "software smart enough to cut away" well it didn't on mine :( Any ideas why?
THANK YOU! You're a gentleman and a scholar!
Excellent - thanks for sharing this. I've been hung up here for a while now!
yeah i found that
6 years later and this is the best tutorial I've found as a noobie to the 3d modeling world. Thank you so much for being a great teacher!
For those of you running into issues with cutting the extra bit of geometry out at around the 15:00 mark here's why this is going wrong and how to fix it:
In the step before the mirror we make the original screw cylinder.
Thanks so much! I was really confused why it wasn’t working. This worked!
Excellent advice. Thank you! :)
Okay so I just wanna help with the extend at 9:14 and 10:40
At 9:14 you should use Extend Faces
At 10:40 you should Chain faces
Dont know why but thats how I solved it =)
Thank you. I kept clicking chain faces and it wouldn't work.
Yes! Good find.
was stuck in the same. Thank you
Thanks!
"Chain Faces" is the name of the function as I understand it, and "Selected Face" & "Extended Faces" are the two alternatives of that function. I'm a beginner and I got confused by it, but that is how I interpret it.
the best fusion 360 tutorial i've ever seen, thanks man!
I just love your way of teaching... it makes the tool so much more understandable and easier!
Great tutorial! Really loving it. Spend hour with sketchUp and this just makes it so much easier.
I had an issue 15:10 and found out what it was. Just moving the extrude option to the right wasn't enough.
Steps I had to do:
- move the extrude tag to the right end
- right click on the tag and select edit feature
- search for the option "Objects to cut" and select the new object you also want to cut
Ya im stuck on that part as well

In 9:34 do not select 'Chain Faces', select "Extend Faces". Then both the pieces will merge.
THANKS ! :D
Thanks bro😍
I selected the whole part then it worked. But, gonna try again to learn.
7 years later, I'm learning things like nobody has taught me! Thank you :)
So happy that the content is still useful :-)
I am having exactly the same issues. Any luck with figuring out how to make it work?
dude you are an OUTSTANDING teacher, you make tough stuff easy and interesting to understand.
THANK YOU.
amazing, you can move features in the timeline, in case you want it done before/after something else you did. This is... honestly revolutionary for me
I learned you really have to pay attention to the details of what he is clicking on being that fusion has updates regularly. For example I was having trouble with the extrusion on the second hole and the "chain faces" until I realized in the current version the two icons are in switched positions from the version lars is using and are called "extend". This takes place around 9:35.
Thx, I skipped the second hole... I'll have to start again and pay closer attention.
@@JoshuaFreeman-s6o help reading the comments . Thanks i was stuck there as well
Thanks, I spent 20 minutes trying to figure that out!
Thanks man, I was wondering why it didn't work!
really thanks for it
For the cylinder he says “chain faces” but clicks on “extend faces”.
9:34, You select *"Extend faces"* no "Chain faces", and at 10:32 remember tobring back to "Chain faces"
Thank you. I was wondering why I couldn't get pass that part. Please pin this comment. It would be really helpful. Got caught up on that for a while.
Thank you for this. Mine was failing at this part too. Thought something was set up wrong.

You are just an amazing teacher...I am new to all this, but after watching your videos I start feeling like an expert already LOL! Thank you so much.
The terms were correct in 2016. Some terms have been renamed since then.
Thankyou so much for this comment, I spent probably 15/20 minutes figuring out where the hell I went wrong because I was getting error messages and it wasn’t working
Thank you very much!

For anyone wondering why you can't extrude the first circle out all the way. What fixed it for me was going to the sector anlysis and pulling it far out. It seemed to be constraining me to where I could extrude.
Thanks Chad! This was driving me nuts.

Thanks for the tutorial!
1 minor error at 9:37: It should be "extend faces"
I am following along and having reached to near the end of this tutorial I am amazed. High quality presentation and very informative. But a few things were not working right. I figured it was something I had done. Thanks to many comments here and in part 3 I pieced it together and wanted to summarize for anyone else following along in the future. I get that a lot has likely happened in 7 years with the development of software, but it felt like it was a configuration or option and it looks to me like either I missed it or the default changed... Either way the answers were here from other commenters and they worked for me.
The problems:
#1- When I moved the cut for the second boss to the end and it cuts thru as it did originally.
The Fillet control panel is now totally different than in the version used in this video
The answer for these 2 problems was posted by the user: @curiousGuy801
Major kudos to him for posting a comment with his solution.
After fighting with this for quite some time, I found this comment. Thanks @joshuadinerstein7533 and @curiousGuy801!
I use Fusion 360 for quite a while now, but move the hole on the history line blew my mind. thanks a lot for your videos!
You are so very welcome 👍😊Thank you for watching
Excellent video. Had some trouble with operation @ 9:37. Discovered that on version 2.0.9442 it requires "Extend Faces" be selected, not "Chain Faces". Looking forward to discovering how to use "Chain Faces"....ok, editing comment, discovered where "Chain Faces" is used. @10:42 when making the center hole, need to enable "Chain Faces" instead of "Extend Faces", then it completes the operation correctly. Something changed in the software over years apparently.
Thank you. I needed that.

Thanks for this :)
nice video.
but in 9:36 you say you select chain faces when you actualy select extend faces.
it will be great if you can edit or add it some how.
thanks.
i had this issue for a second too im like WTF then tried it and it worked leaving it the way it was haha DONT SELECT CHAIN FACES
Super helpful. Thank you.
At first i had a hard time doing the chain faces @10:02 and since I'm using the updated version the extend and chain face were inverted.
had the same issue!
yea same, couldnt figure it out until i saw your comment lol
Thankyou for this comment!
I am watching this just out of curiosity and Mr. Christensen your brilliant explanatory almost makes me want to master this. Great work!
VERY HELPFUL.
Was getting frustrated until found your videos. Now feeling more confident.
critical step at 9:30 to choose "Extend"! faces not "chain" faces as he says out loud in the tut. It wouldn't work the first time I tried it.
thumb'd up for visibility, I had the same issue when I was listening to him, had to check the vid to do it right
I never did get that to work with either chain or extend Gave up after a good half hour and just used 4mm for back extrude.
Thanks for that, was stuck at this step.
Funny, i was also stuck on this step. The two icons seemd to be swapped in my fusion 360 client, but it was indeed the "extend faces" when you hover over your mouse :)!
This was driving me insane!
@@zachfife7907 I had to watch it back really slowly and keep pausing and comparing to see what was what!
On the second hole that is extruded in, you have to extend and choose option "to adjacent faces" if had not previously in order for the edges of the hole to remove the fillets.
Have tried ten times same error: Warning: Some profiles failed to create tool bodies
Cannot extend extrusion to object.
May you continue the good work
Learned a lot again, thank you for this tutorial!
9:20 For those of you having issues with the second circle two-sided not working with the instructions, seems you don't want to chain those faces as it does not work for me. If you also have trouble with around 10:30 where the software doesn't "just know", chain those faces instead.
thank you! were you able to mirror the 21mm cylinder that receives the screw? my command previewed okay but the computation failed
never mind I was able to do it by switching "faces" to "bodies" but really thanks for that tip

Thanks.
You had mentioned in the video that somehow the software knows how to do it but that second hole did not cut through the 2 filets when I tried it.
Thanks so much. This delivered me from 1 hour torture trying to figure it out
@sumanta try to extrude the outer circle then try "chain faces" if it gives you an error leave it on "extend faces".
Then create a sketch on the circle. On the sketch create another circle then extrude. Push the extrude arrow backwards and on the extent menu, change it to object.
Hope this helps I don't really know how to explain in writing.
I don't know why, but for me, just leaving it on extend faces worked fine. If I do chain faces, it gives an error message.
Thanks Chris, just what I needed.
If you're using the old UI, and if you're having problems at 9:37, click on the first icon, not the second one.
Thank you. I spent a whole lot of time trying to figure out what I was doing wrong.

After posting the solution for smoothing the outside, I found that I still had a problem on the INSIDE of the box. The solution for that was to ditch his technique for chaining faces altogether. Instead, leave off the fillets for that end of the box until after you have completed adding the second tube. Then add the fillets. Worked for me. I wonder if his technique fails for me because of my video card's inadequacies. I'll probably never know.

Use 'Extend Faces' not 'Chain Faces' per a commenter below - I just got to this point and it works : )
I went from completely lost to feeling like a pro after just two videos! I have to watch all the others now.
That is awesome to hear Roger DeLong .Thank you for watching the videos
When I try to press pull that first circle out, it becomes highlighted red and does not extrude outward. It does let me pull it inward, but not out. And it’s definitely on the outer face of the box.
So I erased that and tried on the opposite face, and it worked. Now I’m curious why it wouldn’t work on the other (opposite side) face?
When i select the edge i can't then select the center of the circle like in this video. It unselects the edge when i select the circle.
Mr. Christensen, I have tried to pull the second boss in this video countless times, and I cannot connect the little overhangs on the sides of the boss. I am using the latest update in a windows 10 platform and this version is slightly different than the one you are using in this video. HELP!

Yes, there are a few for you to choose from.
Best,
Lars
So at @9:30 - in the latest version of Fusion360, “chain faces” is different, and the buttons are swapped, and the default (for me, at least) was already the appropriate setting (for the selected face, not adjacent faces). You can tell because in the video he gets an error with the way it is originally set, and it’s the error you will see if you switch it from the default.
I don’t have it in front of me atm but I hope that clarifies enough to help someone else.
Thanks! You nailed it.
No matter how I have played with those buttons, I cannot get side 2 of the extrusion to join with that inner face. Then of course when I pull the hole through the feature it doesnt go all the way through the inner fillets. Ive spent way too much time trying to figure this one out lol.
yup, good eye. this saved me.
Wow, thank you.
The same thing happened to me. Thank for the comment.
Thank You, a lot!!
Also happened to me. It's "Extend Faces" and not "Chain Faces" that has to be selected in order to close the gap.
@9.35 it only work with 'extend faces' for me, 'chain faces' only gives a warning indicating the faces failing to intersect
Thanks
Thank you SOOOO much...loving these tutorials. Aloso, moving the cutout along the timeline kinda blew my mind.
this is still relevant for the latest version. So far the best intro for absolute beginners I have found, thank you
Hey so at 2:37 Lars does a press pull on the circle but when I try doing a press pull it only lets me pull it up to 10mm then it gives me this pink with black stripes on face of the circle and then it won't increase in size anymore. Why is that? Thanks
I have the same problem except it doesn't let me pull it out at all!
It's the analysis view. Go back into section analysis, click the face with the stripes and then pull it out more.
+100 Dasonicboom, Thank you!
It is located on the left side of the screen. turn it on and off with the light bulb
Best,
lars
@@fleroviumgaming Thanks very much. I was having the same problem.
I had a lot of problems at 2:50 with the extrusion. I had inspected it before in the previous video, following along. This caused the extrusion to be clipped at the front plane. To solve it: click the arrow near the Analysis folder on the left and hit the lightbulb near the section. Now it will come out.
THANK YOU!!
DOUBLE THANKYOU!!!!! HA! Was struggling with this for ages. I ended up deleting the 'Section' that had been created under analysis as an extra precaution. Will that cause me issues in the future??? I dunno! I'll find out!
thankyou!!!! i had this problem too, the circle turned pink and i was unable to select it. im not sure what analysis means exactly but it worked!!
You are the mvp.thanks. it was driving me mad.
This helped me soooooo much! THANK YOU!
I am guessing there is a error with the face inside the box you select because its two other faces you are trying to cut at the same time, is there a way of selecting multiple faces? to 'Pull to obect'... help? to?
Mine also does this. You need to select chain faces to cut away the internal fillet.
This video quite a few years old now so i think they've changed some aspects of the code.
I have the same problem, the fix to me is to select "Chain Faces" in the menu...

You might be able to hold ctrl to select all 3 faces to go until. I don’t know if it will work, just a thought.
@@MJBEngineering correct answer. You are a scholar and a gentleman, thank you
Best tutorial ever, I was honestly reluctant to use this software because of the learning curve, but 40 mins in and youve guided me effortlessly through basic functions.
That is awesome to hear Paul Goux .Thank you for watching the videos
It's people like you, Lars, who make the world go round. Thank you for this tutorial, it helped a lot.
