  • In this video I try my hand out at some bushcraft, by attempting to build a raised bed. Unfortunately, I run out of time. I set up my tarp configuration, get a fire going in the rain, cook some bacon Mac and Cheese, enjoy some beers and bourbon from my banana flask.

You mix it up, not the same thing & your recommends of fellow you tubers so far have been entertaining. Thanks for the video. So look foward to the next one.

  • @salsepulveda494

    The shelter comes first, then a fire, even if the shelter isn't exactly where you want it. Gathering dry wood is essential, before it rains, then a smaller tarp to keep the wood dry as well as your pack. You can always move the shelter later if rain hasn't started. Build a fire before it rains. It's a lot easier to keep a fire going if it was started before the rain. Watch Corporals Corner. He does it right. Rain will run down that hill and drift into your sleeping area. A small trench around your tarp can help with that. Bring a small entrenching tool for that.

    First time seeing your channel... nice job staying dry! Nothing wrong with a couple cold beers and a swig or two of brown. Kinda sucks making videos in the rain, especially tarp camping because of the lack of light and the sound of rain hitting the tarp but you did a great job!!! The video was easy to watch and fun.... I caught on to you watching Steve Wallis the algorithm just recommended you and I clicked on most of the time I click on to random videos I end up not really liking them but you are one of the few people that I tune into on the regular! looks like you had a lot of fun on this one buddy cheers to you!!

    Next time put your tarp up asap, put wood and kindling under the tarp with your pack to keep it all dry. You had a forest of dry leaves for your bedding and fire starter and limbs and logs and you struggled because you played at bushcraft.

    Yea they never look like they fit. Till you pound that wedge all the way in. Take your wedge put it in the center after you put the head on all the way by hitting the bottom of the handle. Once the head is on all the way place the wedge in the center of the groove as you tap that into place the handle will form to the head. The handle should stick out about half an inch to an inch. Looks odd but that is what its supposed to look like. It latter can be trimmed. The wedge should now be about half to one inch below the top of the head. The wood will spread and form its self to the head. As long as the head is in line with the handle . Your good. Remember the inside of the head is tapered. So the small end of the head is the bottom. Think to vees opposite of each other so they lock. As you tap the wedge in you make the other vee look right. Sooo. Look at the head. Make sure you put the smaller side of the head on first. Then tap bottom of handle till head is on all the way. Then tap metal wedge into center of groove till the handle forms tight against head. Then i trim the handle level with head but you don't need to.

    What I do if I want to have a fire through rain is collect 2 to 3 times the normal amount of wood I would need for my stay and make my initial fire 3 to 4 feet tall in the beginning to get a good bed of coals.. But even then you need to burn more and keep a bigger fire just to allow new wood thrown on time to dry.. Punky logs I collect and place around the fire.. These are often very saturated and don't burn well, but they hold the heat in as they smolder and add to the coals..

    • @CampingwithSamBananas
      @CampingwithSamBananas  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, it's a great idea. I did build it big in the initial stage, but it just held up good enough for what I needed. I was asleep within 20 minutes of that last shot lol! I was whooped.

So happy that TH-cam recommended you to me because you are fast becoming one of my favorites in this camping/bushcraft niche. We gotta get you to 100k... fast!

    Favorite camping/outdoor channels: Steve Wallis (of course), Joe Robinet, and Kent Survival. Honorable mention has to go to Wild Beare, because she's just so darned cute as well as being an accomplished camper. There are just so many great outdoor channels going now.
    You mentioned Kroger. I grew up in central Kentucky, and Kroger was a fixture there as well. Then, I met my (ex)wife when I relocated to Cincinnati, and she was working for the Kroger corporate office as a site analyst. I'm very familiar with the company. Now that I live in the northern Detroit suburbs, Meijer is the big game in town. I know of only one Kroger near me. All the smaller grocers have been run out, excepting higher-end stores like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.

      Hi bud! I take pepper spray unless I'm in an area with bears. Then I take bear spray. I never take firearms. Never had any issue at all with wild animals. One thing is that people in the country sometimes let their dogs run loose so I've had a couple tense encounters with loose dogs. A few times people were weird and made me feel a little uncomfortable but never anything major. You're best bet is to have a friend with you if possible. But I don't see an issue with doing it however you feel comfortable.
