Tarp Camping in the Rain - Finding Fatwood - 3 Days Bushcraft Trip

As you might have noticed I like to aim for outings where the weather change. I love that. Going out in the moment when spring arrives like it did here gives me so much to capture with the camera. I'm a sucker for contrasts.
Finding fatwood right away instead of struggling with damp wood in a pine forest. There was some leftover snow just a few days before I went out and I know from experience that exact time is the worst time in the year for making fires. People up north don't understand this. Up there fire is always easy. Because when the woods freeze over they stay frozen. And things stay dry inside throughout the cold season. But here you have rain, snow, melt, rain, snow, melt all winter...It leaves things moist to the core and after a few months of that with up and down over the freezing point fires becomes almost impossible at times. You all know the mantra you hear... "birch bark burns when wet". Where I live that don't work all of the time. In winter here I sometimes find birch bark that will not burn right away even when thrown on open flames. It's not just only the wet it depends on the level of decay etc. It can also vary from tree to tree and from one day to another. So fatwood is the one true thing you always can depend on in all seasons and weather.
One liberating thing I experience every spring is also the first hike with a smaller sleeping bag. Clears up so much room and I have always enjoyed hiking with a smaller backpack like this. Gives more freedom. Been a while since out with the LK35 and I must say... It is a fantastic backpack.
A thing about meals you cook. I have planned ambitious meals before. Made pizzas and baked bread and made sinful cheeseburgers that make you drool... but the best 2 meals I ever had in the wild was so much simpler. You never know when they happen. First one was years ago when having the canoe as a canopy over my Lavvu out on a mire. Some simple fries fried in oil and some fried beef slices in a pan. Some mayo or ketchup don't remember exactly. It was so good. And now this outing. Second night when I did the one pot pasta there... Hadn't even planned it properly. Gnocchi, tomato paste, salt, paprika powder, Onsala Korv (sausage for sandwiches) and Tabasco. It was incredible. This time I didn't even fry the sausage! And I know from experience it will not taste the same if making it again. It was that moment and everything around it.
I definitely prefer to sleep on the ground. But as I have mentioned many times before: finding flat ground is very difficult in these woods. So I always have a simple hammock with a couple of straps at the bottom of my bag just in case. This time it was actually very nice to use it in the warm sun, watching the sun set over those tree tops, over that calm mirror of a lake. And I did not record the horrible struggle all night with the sleeping pad sliding around in it. Should I?
Some really great shots I got this time that I am very pleased with. I hope you will enjoy them too! Dying to get out in my green pickle now that the lakes have cleared up. See you again soon and thanks for watching!

Why is this man simply the best what YT has to offer in bushcrafting ? Easy answer: He is real and just authentic like no other! No product placement making every video look like a tv commercial, he stick with his well approved gear and loves to use more simple things. No gear war here. He knows so well what to capture with the camera so the results are always such a pleasure to watch for us. Mr. Swedwoods, you Sir are absolutly incredible in what you do and you have well proven the test of time being a big player on here without selling yourself to the industry!
My deepest respect to you and please keep going your fantastic work!
All the best
👍
Absolutely 🎉
Corporal’s Corner in the United States demonstrates bushcraft skills. He is also a teacher passing on the skills needed to survive in the woods under any conditions.
@tomconcitis9322 Corporal Kelly is the BIGGEST sellout in the GAME.. Next to David Canterbury look into rhat man your wayyyy off 😅😂✊️🔥✌️💚
Not to put down this gentleman's bushcrafting by no means because he is very good at what he does but there are quite a few others out there who do excellent at this also. Perhaps you may extend your views to include others, also.
This man knows how to camp with the least amount of damage to the forest. Bless you, sir ❤ 🙏
"This week on Swedwoods, Swed gets into a stare-down with a 300kg moose. Swed wins". Seriously though, thank-you again for showing us this truly amazing place and all that`s in it.
Thank you very much!😅
Every minute in that forest is a joy, I'll be heading to the forest today too...many thanks!
Thanks for the video
The yellow plastic egg container brought back my memories from decades ago: we used them on our family backpacking adventures. Having REAL eggs to cook lifts the spirits!
If the site and the tarp are properly prepared that's some good camping right there. I got hooked on it in the military. I don't care if rain isn't in the forecast, my site is prepared like it is. Better prepared and it doesn't take that long.
💪
Thank you!

Thank you!
Thank you!
I learned a useful lesson about looking for Fat Wood in tree roots, rather than just higher up the tree. A pleasure to see the Moose and the Wood Ant's nest was impressive! 👍
Thanks!
Excellent! Fat wood for the win.
A really nice blend of art and bushcraft. Probably the best on TH-cam.😊
Thanks!
Quá là thú vị cảnh đẹp tuyệt vời

Thank you for making these videos! I love watching them before bed almost every night. So much more entertaining than TV, and very educational! Growing up in the hollers of SE Ohio hunting, trapping, fishing, and camping. Your videos bring me much joy knowing that others are also still embracing the wounder full world that we all share. Mother Nature has much healing powers if one is willing to listen and engage in. Keep up the Great work! Your friend Chris.... >>>>>-------------------->
Thanks!
Tarp and hammock is my go-to! You can sit, if it rains pull the tarp over and still cook and have a view of the forest, love it. Exped makes excellent gear and has an insane warranty. In the US there are fire ants...won't kill you but wow they can hurt! Amazing forest, great skills, great food...must be watching Swedwoods!
Thanks!
A start to a great Saturday. Coffee and Swedwoods video. Thank you for yaking us along,
Thanks!
Amazing. Thanks for taking us along! Instead of the sleeping pad I take a roll of reflectics I call it. It’s like the front widow reflective shades you put up in your car to keep it cool. They sell it as an insulation. Extremely light weight.
Great sunset catch. Getting time for the lakes to melt off in the north country. Take care. Be safe. Next time
Thanks!
Awesome practical demonstrations. Thanks again. It is always a great way to start my Saturday.
Thanks!
Perfect Something to watch on the flight to Lebanon tomorrow! Looking forward to it!
one of the best videos created by you . Congratulations.
Thank you!

Nice foraging for fatwood. Thanks for this lovely video

Excellent Videography, Beautiful scenery, wonderful to see wildlife and to hear vocalizations. Best Bushcraft on TH-cam in my opinion. Relaxing and Refreshing, exquisite job Sir !

Yes. Tack!
@@SwedwoodsTack själv.
So beautiful, especially those last scenes in the hammock over the water, so tranquil, felt like I was there ! Thank you.
Thanks!
Hello my
friend
Good to see you again. I love your video like always. This Moos was beautiful very young I think. Here in Canada more people get attacked and killed by Moose then from Bears.
You take care my friend till the next time God bless you and your family. Bye bye
Thanks my friend!
Thank you for another peaceful adventure on. I like the way you give tips on Bushcraft. Thank you again. Greetings from Poland.
Thanks!
hey there big man, another great tarp set up, plenty of room, nice and cozy, low enough in case the winds pick up, superb mate :)
Thanks!
Excellent fat wood instruction and fire demonstration. I’m a tarp guy and I live in some hills that are moist too. Thank you from an old vet, retired in the US, hills of east Tennessee.
I always look forward to your videos. excellent 👌. Thanks for taking us on your awesome adventure.
Thank you!
Loved your hammock set up by the lake. Peaceful
Thanks!
Great my friend , And very real, in the Basque Country it rains, a lot, and often the birch or fatwood does not even burn with gasoline! 👏👏👏💪💪🔥🔥
Thanks for the footage, Sweddy - really enjoyed this upload, some awesome scenery. Try some butter and garlic powder in your instant mashed potato 👍
Good tip thanks!
Always makes my day to see your videos. Love the authenticity you bring and the little detailed explanations that will make all the difference in making it or breaking it. Love bacon in my potatoes too. Thank you!
Thanks!
Love the tarp shelter! Unique and original.
Thanks!
I sit here in front of my work laptop watching this and am mesmerised. Work can wait, this so peaceful and meditative somehow to me
Excellent very enjoyable content every time I watch!
Thank you.
Thank you!
35:18... did you say to yourself whew I am glad it's not the fall!
37:42 that was cool!!
Great vid once again. Thanks for the useful tips on fatwood! Loved that shot from afar at around 29:40. Your camp looks so inviting, like an oil painting. It makes the viewer just want to step inside and sit by the fire. I'm so pumped for spring coming in again!
Thank you!
Tried with a stove just outside my tarp setup and a heat driven fan blowing heat in to the mostly closed tarp area, temp was just above freezing and quite moist from lots of rain just before. It really was a nice feeling. Having stove in tarp covered area and I can skip the fan.
That's what I call the beautifull life!
Thanks to make thoses vidéos
Peace 🇨🇵
Always looking forward to seeing your next outing I have been doing bushcraft survival for 42 years and now and then you always show me something new your knowledge of the forest is off the wall...
Lifetime subscriber 🌲🔥
Thank you very much!
It’s refreshing to see a realistic fatwood hunt: too often someone shows immediately finding the best trove of fatwood, seemingly without effort. My own experience mirrors yours here-you have to go through the worthless ones to find nature’s gold. Enjoyed this!
Well to be fair, I live in the south of Sweden and it's a bit harder to find as we have more leaf trees, so I do buy some fatwood online or in stores for fairly cheap and prepear it at home and put it in a small cannister I bring with me, also I buy other sort of fire starters to try out some hard waxed cotton (I think made by miltec or some german brand) it was like 8 cylindric, so for me trying out different alternatives that are cheap is fun, I think those waxed cottong things went for like 5€ or so if not less I can't remember I still have a few left.
Great video. Beautiful place.
Thank you!
Your camping is very attractive!🏕️
I was impressed.✨
I thought that the rain was not comfortable.☔️
However, on seeing your camping, I understood that raining camp isn’t bad.🤭
I can be relaxed when I hear a rainy sound.😌
Your video became the splendid hint.
It will update my camping.⛺️
I enjoy Japanese beautiful nature, too.🇯🇵🌸🏝️🍁⛄️
Thank you!
Excellent videography! The meal preparations are always interesting and give me ideas for my next camping trip. Well done.👊
Thanks!
The great man comes again, you are welcome
Thanks!

Wow, ballt med Älgarna!!!
Very beautiful video again. Can’t wait for my vacation in Sweden this July.
Thanks!
That sounds awesome my friend! Thanks!
What a beautiful forest your in there, it reminds me of a Hansel and Gretel forest..🌲 Always enjoy your videos, I like how to travel to different locations .. love your tarp set-up too plenty of space inside ... that Moose was eyeing you off 😅 looking forward to seeing your next video Swedwood ❤ stay safe out there 🕊🙏❤
Thanks!
So wonderful to see the beautiful moose(s)!
Educational, calming , knowledgeable, just the perfect way to spend a little while , Thanks for doing these vids , in a world that runs way to fast , a moment of tranquility, thank u
Thanks!
Enjoying every single video you made. Respect 😙❤❤❤
Take good care of yourself always
Thanks!
In Georgia, with all our pine trees, we refer to this wood as fat lighter. You can also find sap/resin often oozing out of the side of pine trees. Cut some off and it will give you a hot start on your fire once lit.
Love your tarp setup. I am planning to modify a hilleberg tarp by making a stove jack.
Nice to see you out with the Haglof LK35 rucksack
And recovering from your injury.
Thanks!
I really enjoy watching you do your things in de forrest, its great to come along this way. I kinda envy you with such a beautiful country to live in. May I ask if you are satisfied with the edge retention of your nice Mora Gardberg knive and do you think it a higher quality than the cheaper mora knives?
Thanks as always for sharing🙏🏼
I tried a lot of moras over the year and the stainless garberg is my favorite. Thanks!
Thanks for your reaction, love the looks of the Gardberg and it won’t be long before own one too😀
Wonderful filming as always, no disappointments, thanks brother Swed👍👍 Sometimes things just come together in a simple, easy and satisfying way that defies words, seems you hit this trip at the right moment. Lots of pine forest in my general area, fatwood is plentiful so I never use anything else. Great camps, fires and food, expect nothing less per usual. Thanks for the work and wild trip, very nice. See ya next time.
Thank you very much my friend!
beautiful spring green scenes, always such enjoyable content.
the Swedsman never disappoints
Thanks!
Good Lord, it's 3 am and I gotta get up and have me some pasta 😵💫
Looking forward to seeing you paddle the green pickle! I'm watching from Toronto, Canada. Cheers!
Cool to see the moose! I was starting to wonder if there was any wildlife left in Sweden.
You are the best my friend!
Thanks!
Always amazing man!!!
Thanks!
Thank you for this relaxing video, it inspired me: no matter where I live, I must practice survival challenges and be optimistic.❤❤❤
Thanks!
Wunderschön, vielen Dank!

Thanks!
Thanks!
Cool video as always.
Thanks!
Lol I usually say the same about trees growing on (or even in) cliffs here in the mountains. It’s like a slowmo suicice. 🤣
lol
Enjoying the vid. Hope you got some new boots keep feet dry. Looks as if spring is coming there. Our crazy winter hardly happened. One 0 F day and a few inches of snow. Lot of freezing temps. The bugs will eat us alive this year.
Thanks!
