I grew up in Chicago in the 70's with a divorced mom who was very poor. She couldn't afford to take her three kids anywhere unless it was free, which the Museum of Science and Industry was at the time. Chicago is freezing cold for eight months of every year, and she got us out of the house every weekend, so it was either there or the Field Museum (also free). We never saw the coal mine or the submarine because those cost extra. My favorites were the Circus exhibit (which stayed up well into the 1990's, I believe), a ride about petroleum that you went through in a Disneyland haunted mansion-style car, The food exhibit that enabled you to choose items on conveyor belts and it would add up the calories for you, Paul Bunyan's house, and of course the walkthrough human heart. Why did they get rid of that? I was fascinated by the body slices in the stairway since I first remember seeing them at six years old. Not repulsed or frightened, but definitely fascinated.

Oh yes, the Bunyan's house! I have a faint memory of it and never could recall where I saw it. I recall the heart and the circus exhibit but can't say I recall the food exhibit you mention. I loved the coal mine and nice to see it is still going. I recall the stairway of slices as well. A bit unsettling at first but so fascinating. Nice to see 505 in shelter now. The only thing I disliked about the museum was every time I got to go, the only Mold-A-Rama I could find was always the bust of Lincoln. So i had about a dozen of them by the last trip I made lol.

@@katenunyabizness9221 I have a vivid memory of smashing my Lincoln mold-a-rama on the sidewalk outside my home as a five-year old. It was fun. All my favorite mold-a-rama's were at the zoos in Lincoln Park and Brookfield anyway. The food exhibit was right off the main hall and was up for awhile, maybe a decade starting in the late 70's.

I worked there during that time. Thank you for reminding about Petroleum and the Circus exhibit! It was during my Senior year,1974, and the summer after graduation. Oh, yeah, and Paul Bunyan terrified me when I was a kid, and I’ll tell you what; at closing time; that exhibit was creepy!
I agree about the body slices. They were fascinating. I must say the fetuses as well.

So Bond Movies, Im sort of a 007 extraordinaire (as evident on my channel)…… definitely don’t start with A View To A Kill, it was Roger Moores last and definitely not his best. That said, here are a few suggestions by era to get ya started!
    Sean Connery - Goldfinger
Roger Moore - The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker
George Lazenby - On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (one of my faves, Lazenby only did one film)
Timothy Dalton - The Living Daylights
Pierce Brosnan - Tomorrow Never Dies
    Daniel Craig - Casino Royale
Have fun, and thanks for another awesome video!!

    Hey Jacob!
Thanks for going through and filming my favorite museum. I am a scientist myself (well, aiming to be; I want to work in psychology and, as a social science, sociology) but I am also a lover of innovative things, including vehicles and airplanes. I absolutely fell in love with this museum when I went back in 2016, but I haven't been since. However, next year I am taking my mom and sister to Chicago to visit this museum as well as many others! I am very excited. Chicago is my home away from home. I live in Indianapolis.
I hope you had a good holiday, and I hope you have a great New Years celebration. Best wishes.

Jacob, thank you for sharing and allowing me to see my old stomping grounds through you vicariously! I worked there when I was in High School (1974), and the summer after.
You are correct, the body slices were in the stairwell (red) , the fetuses were on the second floor, along with TAM, and the walk through heart. It was amazing to see how much MSI had grown, and how impeccably displayed the exhibits are. It’s easy to see where the money goes. It is sort of sad knowing the fact that it was free admission; but in some ways I won’t go into, maybe it’s for the better. Just so expensive, though.

Bunking in torpedo rooms was still a thing in the 90's. A friend of mine, back then, used to work on a Los Angeles class 688i. He gave me a tour of the sub on a day that he went to the base to pick up his paycheck. He showed me the fold up bunks in the torpedo room and he said that if you were lucky, and there was a torpedo rack free, you could toss one of the cots onto the torpedo rack and sleep on it. He said it was better than sleeping in the normal bunk rooms. The laundry machines were also in the torpedo room. And it was CRAMPED in there. I hit my head so many times going down the stairs between decks. The bunks gave me claustrophobia just looking at them. They had FAR LESS space between them than what you saw in this U-Boat. There were mere inches between bunks to the point where I doubt that anyone other than a really skinny person could sleep on their sides. I got to see every part of the sub except for the nuclear reactor area where my friend worked. He said that that are was very off limits to visitors. Haha!

How funny, we were just there in the fall. They were still working on the 'Farm Tech' area, the eggs and chicks display was all by itself in a corner. For some reason, (wink), I collected every Mold-A-Rama in the building (and of course the pressed penny.). We didn't do the extras because we spent the other half of the day at Six Flags in Gurnee (Great America) for 'Horrorfest'.

Jacob, my family went to Chicago the summer I was 7, I believe it was 1971. Dad was there for work, IBM school. I’m a life long Californian (SF area) and going to Chicago is a major trip for us. IBM paid for my mom and us 3 kids to go. Anyway we went to the museum of science and industry and it made a big impression. I still remember things like the fairy castle. Also remember the chicks hatching and the coal mine. I’m sure a lot has changed since then. Including the U boat. I know we went in it and I’m positive it was outside in the back. As for the “body slices”, I don’t remember them and if they were there in 1971, I don’t think mom and dad would have exposed us to it. They were pretty protective. I think there was also a train outside, probably the zephyr or a streamlined and also the steam engine. I’ve always wanted to go back to Chicago and explore it as an adult. Another thing that made a big impression was going to the top of the John Hancock Building. The Sears Tower was under construction.

On December 21, 1951, a methane explosion in the Orient No. 2 mine in West Frankfort killed 119 men and hospitalized 5 others. This was the worst mine disaster in the United States since 1928. All the Bond movies are great in their own way. For a newcomer, I would recommend watching one with each Bond. There have been 6 so far. 1. Sean Connery(the best) 2. George Lazenby (was Bond in only one movie) 3. Roger Moore 4. Timothy Dalton 5. Pierce Brosnan 6. Daniel Craig(watch all his movies because they are more connected to each other than all of the other Bond movies and will contain much more back story) Skip 'Never Say Never', it was done by another production company and stars an noticeably older Sean Connery. I'm excited to see who the next Bond will be, Daniel Craig is done playing Bond. I hope this helps, keep up the good work and stay safe!

I haven’t been to Chicago yet, but I want to get Garrett popcorn and eat deep dish pizza at either Giordano’s or Lou Malnati’s. My mom has been to Chi-town before years ago. Have fun Jacob! Goldfinger will always be a classic James Bond film.

Pequods for pizza, no one from here eats at either of those other places, Pequods or Burts pizza if you want legit good deep dish. True Chicago experiences and are even in the near north burbs.

@ Thanks, Tisep1! We’ll go to those places for deep dish pizza instead.

@ just a recommend that’s all. I’d rather see people spend their trips and money on good family owned places personally. Make reservations though.

You'll want to try both Lou's and Giordano's. They're two different animals. Gio's has dough on the top and bottom with a tomato sauce on top, and Lou's is a single crust on the bottom with hand crushed tomatoes on top. I like them both in different ways.

Dude, didn't know you grew up around here. I split my youth between Park Forest and Wilmington. So cool

The Wet-Bike was basically the prototype for the Jet Ski, which was more stable and simpler to use. The first one was used in the Bond film, and Drug King Pablo Escobar loved it so much he bought it...which is kind of why they became unpopular with the public.

Even though is been nearly 30 years since I last visited this museum, i know right away what exhibit would have probably upset you as a child. - i have to take the kids in my family to visit.....

I remember seeing the sliced bodies, and the dioramas of amputation. That was my first-time going there and no one explained it to me. I was watching Jack Palance on Believe it or not and he told of the bodies coming from executed prisoners for the medical school. That was thirty some years later.

I was in the museum in October 2023. They had the Blue Paradox exhibit, which I don't remember needing to reserve a spot for. It was actually pretty boring. When I was a kid, I'd go to the Columbus, Ohio Center of Science and Industry. They had skinned human bodies on display and that always creeped me out.

Jacob, we recommend you watch "Thunderball" first. It's a fantastic classic, and Sean Connery is the original (and best) James Bond. Dave & Mave
