  • Who are the best AFL players I've ever seen? It's a question I've been asked literally once. But I thought it would be a fun exercise to generate a best 23 of the finest players of the 21st Century so far. In this video, the GAZ-man chooses his squad of warriors, and then realises too late that maybe Lenny Hayes is a better choice than Joel Selwood, potentially, if you factor his finals record but Selwood is a better contested ball player, then again Hayes' tackling record is superior, but on the other hand...

Bartel as a backman is a bit of a stretch, but you were pretty faithful to players positions otherwise, so I'll give it a pass. Would have left out Akermanis on account of being a massive POS and would have left space for Dusty (bias) or one of the other forwards.

Yeah I wouldn't want him there all the time, but I couldn't think of anyone who'd be better on the flank - probably forgetting someone really obvoius haha
Aker was a close call on the POS scale but noone else can do what he could do. Dusty is a future Hall of Famer, no doubt, but Aker was a full on freak for 12 whole years straight.

Fev out. Lloyd to full forward; Brownie at centre half forward. Good team though. But imagine Cyril and Eddie in the same team. Probably a luxury no team could afford.

Always been a fan of big Jono, he nearly made it into my squad but I rated Fev as a bit more versatile, even if he wasn't as consistent.
Cyril and Eddie would absolutely ruin the league in the same side, every ball that hits the ground would basically be a goal with them around haha

7 Cats wow! Not sure I'd put Bartel in there though. Can think of at least half a dozen mids/half backs I'd put ahead of him but great team nonetheless.

Absolutely understand, I'm personally just a big Bartel fan

Look this might sound a bit bias but I would've included Heath Shaw on the HB. Bloke was just a ball winning rebounder who also could do elite defence

Shaw came incredibly close but I just had to have Bunji and Bartel in there.
      Fantastic player, Shaw was.

Even with no Dusty, Voss, Bucks, Fyfe or Cousins thats a solid team. I think Power as a back pocket is a stretch considering his versatlity, but honestly don't know what would've been a good sub under your rules.
Any reason Sam Mitchell was left out?

    • @thegaz-man
      @thegaz-man  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think Mitchell was a fantastic player, super consistent, I just didn't think he broke open games as Judd and Hodge, and I rate Pendles and Black better as disposers of the ball.
Purely a preference thing, Mitchell wasn't far off

If I'm picking this team, I'm picking them to play the biggest game of all time, some sort of nonsense time-traveling shenanigans against a team of SpaceJam-esque monsters for the fate of the universe. And in that high-stakes scenario, there are three non-negotiables: the three men to have won multiple Norm Smith medals in my lifetime. Dusty simply has to be there alongside Hodge and McLeod.

🤣🤣 really love that idea for a scenario!! Who plays the Michael Jordan role in an AFL Space Jam film, do you reckon?

These things are all subjective of course, but since you have the best 7 Cats players of their era all in there, you'll get no complaining from me. If you need an official tagger to come in for team balance though, it's Ling of course.

That 2007-2011 Cats team was just insane. Mackie gets my nod as probably the most underrated player in modern times.
Doing a vid where I pit this side against all other clubs best ever teams and I think you might be pleased with the results of that too

Out of your team, I would have swapped Bartel to the wing, Pendlebury as rover, and Hodge as back flank.
Brendan Fevola is a wildcard pick… that I actually agree with. So much so that I decided to include him in my side:
FB: Corey Enright, Matthew Scarlett, Josh Gibson
HB: Andrew McLeod, Luke Hodge, Daniel Tahlia
C: Jason Akermanis, Scott Pendlebury, Jimmy Bartel
R: Max Gawn, Gary Ablett Jnr, Chris Judd
HF: Steve Johnson, Lance Franklin, Cyril Rioli
FF: Eddie Betts, Brendan Fevola, Barry Hall
INT: Nic Naitanui, Joel Selwood, Jack Riewoldt, Adam Goodes
    SUB: Dustin Martin
I tried roughly following your rules. I only started following AFL in 2007, so the lack of Matthew Lloyd or various 01-03 Brisbane players isn’t because I think they were poor; I just didn’t see enough of them playing.
I didn’t pick a lot of players from non-Victorian teams, but that partly might be because I could only watch footy on Victoria FTA television up until 2018, and wasn’t exposed to interstate clubs nearly as often.
I’m anxious that I picked too many of my beloved Cats, but I also know that I could have picked more. I hold Hawkins and Riewoldt to the same regard, and I think Tom Stewart has a chance to make the side in the future.

That's a very, very good team! Love the idea of having Cyril and Eddie both roving packs in the F50. NicNat is a great choice as a second ruck/resting forward.
Hodge at CHB makes a lot of sense, I originally had him there before I decided I wanted another lockdown tall, while still keeping Jimmy and Bunji.
It's an interesting point you raise about the differences in exposure to different teams. I really don't remember watching a lot of Port or Collingwood games as a kid because I didn't like those teams, and I had a heavy diet of Adelaide and Richmond games.
