CHIPs and Emergency! were Universal Television productions. To save production costs CHIPs used stock footage from Emergency!

@@74Spirit1 it was an NBC show and was filmed sometime at Universals lot so they had access to NBC/Universal stock footage and things at the studio. In the Emergency universe, those two firefighters could not have been Johnny and Roy, because this scene was set in 1979. Johnny and Roy were promoted to Captain in 1977, unless they were allowed to function as Paramedics, while still being Captains.

    • @MGower4465
      @MGower4465 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

There was an entire episode about Roy being offered a promotion to Engineer, and much is made of how he would have to give up being a paramedic. But there *is* an episode where Gage pulls additional duty at another station under a Captain Stone, who not only was in the same paramedic class as Gage, but dialog even mentions Stone intended to keep up with his paramedic training despite his rank.
Even assuming Roy and John are able to be Captains and retain certification as paramedics, there is no way they would operate together. We see even when Captain Stanley hands over control of a situation to a Chief, he's still expected to supervise part of the effort and be the Chief's eyes and ears up close.

Hello From Mark In KY. Actually I do remember another episode of CHIPS in which there was a freeway crash in which the paramedic squad that showed up at the scene had one paramedic which had the very dark hair and the second paramedic had red hair in which the scene was filmed in which you could not really see their faces. I don’t think that the squad was 51 as was in Emergency.
One of the Amateur Radio Club meetings that I attended had the local EM director speaking to us who was also a firefighter back around the same time period that Emergency was on TV. This person praised the show for bringing the idea of EMS and or paramedics to his fire department and was citing the show for its real life scenarios that were commonly portrayed. Most people never realized that Mike Stover on Emergency was actually a real LA County Firefighter because of the need to have a certified firefighter to drive the fire truck.

What really would have made this episode great is having Don Knotts play Barney Fife who was called in to fill in for Ponch and the 3 people in the car were actually 2 people: Herman and Grandpa Munster! No! Better yet! Lucy and Ethel!!! Then Barney could have a crush on Ethel! Ok, I’m overthinking this “tv shows overlapping” thing. 🤣

One of the cool things of being a kid in the 70's Hollywood was seeing location filming for so many iconic T.V. shows or even knowing the locations if I didn't see it happen in real time. I saw location filming for shows like Mannix, Barretta, Adam-12, Emergency, Rockford Files, Starsky and Hutch, Barnaby Jones, Police Woman and more including many movies. I learned this seeing them film Rockford files one time that they could not tie up public telephones so they setup phone booths that the studio owned on a corner to film scenes of them using the phone.

4:24 This actually would be the same vehicle used as squad 51. Note the small white light on the top of the light bar. That light was supposed to be only on paramedic units, to differentiate them from regular Rescue units. The light was included on the plans LAFD shared with the Emergency production when they built Squad 51, but LAFD itself never used the extra light, so only the fake Squad was ever true to the actual plans.

Nice catch, Rick. I always liked..do like...Cross Overs like this. When a series is produced and/or created by the same people, it gives a continuity to their universe.

I recall watching an episode of Adam 12 where they show DeSito and Gage talking with Doctors Early,Bracket, Morton and Nurse Dixie McCall. As Roy and Johnny exit Rampart immediately through another door enter Officers Reed and Malloy , Dixie starts calling them by name as do The Docs!
    It was awesome!
Whats funny is, in an episode of Emergency, Station 51 crew is watching an episode of.....Adam 12 and Gage is constantly perplexed as to what happened to Reed and Malloy because 51 kept getting runs & Gage missed the ending!

Squad 51 made another appearance on CHiPs as well. William Smith played a paramedic and he was training the CHP officers in first aid. In the background, Squad 51 was clearly visible.

Wow I'm starting to watch Chips again
And I totally remember this episode of chips. I don't know why there wasn't more X-over episodes. Maybe one of your subscribers will be able to fill in the blanks. But I forgot which series it was Adam-12 or Chips but one of them ended up at Rampart Hospital for something. A friend of mine back in the day. Took a vacation to California and checked out Station 51 and Rampart Hospital he said it was quite interesting. Have a great day everyone.

The "Squad 51" truck used in "Emergency" was actually built by Universal Studios for the show and was not an official LA County unit. After the production of "Emergency" ended it returned to the Universal Studios motor pool, where it was reused in other shows. In fact, at the time of the production of both "Emergency" and "CHiPs", there was no Los Angeles County Station 51 (Station 127 was the stand in for Station 51 in the series). In the mid-90's LA County re-designated Station 60 that is located on the Universal Studios lot as Station 51 in honor of the show's legacy.
Squad 51 has since been moved, and now resides with Engine 51 from the show at the LA County Fire Museum, which is open to the public.

As a kid I loved the show. As a paramedic, we all laughed at the obvious lack of medical oversight by the film producers. "BP 120/80 he's going into shock". (120/80 is textbook normal) or the fact that every person was given IV ringers. but as a kid I none the less loved the show.

I was watching this episode of CHiPs in 1979 with my dad and older brother on live tv. After that scene was over my dad turns to both of us and says, "Isn't that the emergency truck?" I remembered that scene because I thought from then on, that CHiPs and Emergency were real, and those were not actors.

Great video clip! Watched both shows when I was a kid. I would not expect S-51 crew to be John and Roy because by the end of the series Emergency, they both promoted to Captain which means they would be off the Squad and managing an Engine Company and/ or station.

I just watched a episode of Adam 12 were the gentleman that did the calls was on there. It was the one where they went to the airport LAX! IT was so awesome to see and hear him, not just being a dispatcher. Even though that was his job on this episode!!! Crazy! And a lot of the fire fighters and paramedics were on Adam 12 as police.

@3:26 right there…. Any Star Trek deep space 9 fans? Because that’s Garak!!! Also, I grew up in Carson and was a la county fire explorer and occasionally we’ll have our post meetings at 127’s or in the tv show station 51… watching emergency and having experienced 116’s paramedics bring my dad back from a massive heart attack in front of me cemented my career goals that launched me into the ems field for 14 years. I’d still smirk going to harbour UCLA medical (rampart) to drop off. Nice trip down memory lane.

I find it interesting to see the differences in fire equipment, trucks, etc. from the Emergency! days till programs today like Chicago Fire, etc. My Dad was a volunteer fireman back in the late 40s-early 50s in York, PA - the yearly calendars came with a back page of the fire call signals which could be heard all over town in those days - all Dad had to do was look at the list and know where the fire was according ti the sirens! As a kid I remember one when family was out - it was a farm fire! Not good!!!
