I'm not really surprised by this because it's all about how the shot looks after the turn. To the right they have an open area with industrial buildings to the left they come up to an intersection only a few yards down the shot

Once in a great while you'll notice Squad/Engine 51 turn right, but mostly they turn left. And it seems like when they turn left, it seems like they have that same bunch of cars scrunched together and stopped in the middle of the road in the left turn lane.

I remember back watching Rockford Files with later episodes Jim drove the firebird with square headlights but they would show the the older model with round headlights.. Also when they would show the dash board of a Ford sedan dash when the car was a GM car or truck.. My mom thought I was crazy always showing her these little tidbits..

I'm glad you did this video!!! 😂 When this show was originally on, my parents and I would always guess which way they would turn...it turned into a family game!!! As I got older and tried to guess which way...I was always made fun of till all my friends started doing the same thing... 😂 As a young Adult...I thought I was just wierd, but...I wasn't!!!

First quibble; Engine 51 is not a truck but an engine (or pumper) in some places. Now, where the station is dictates the turn out of the station to a large degree. For instance, my station turned left out of the station a large majority of the time.

  • @el6550

I have all the episodes on DVD. When I first got them, I noticed a lot of the video leaving the station looked like stock footage reused over and over. The same cars were always ahead of them or on the side streets. That could explain why they turned one way most of the time.

  • @hueyiroquois3839

Station 51 has a fire engine, not a truck. Engines carry fire extinguishing equipment, such as hoses and extinguishers, while trucks carry mainly rescue equipment like ladders. (In case you can't tell on video what type of vehicle it is, the dispatcher frequently mentions Engine 51.)

    • @douglastully4791

  • @anthonyj.adventures9736

Former volunteer firefighter. I have alot of city fire fighter friends and they saw this and said in city which station 51 is there are mapped out response areas. By appearance it looks like they are on the edge of town. So the city being mostly to the driver(right) side of the station. The less city more rural area might mid neutral response with another fire house. Or end city limits and covered by volunteers. But which ever way there are more public places or busy intersections would be the most likely direction they go. There's a station in NY thats on a 1 way street but most it's calls is from the direction the street comes from so they go the wrong way.

Rick, you’ve got so much patience going thru 18 videos looking for this! I found this to be so much fun and so interesting. At first I thought maybe they were reusing footage, but you’ve shown us that is definitely not the case. I think you made an excellent point that sometimes a city will open up more in one direction from a fire station. Who knows why for sure, but this was very enjoyable👍🏼

I wonder if there was ever an episode where one vehicle went to the left and the other to the right at the same time? That would be cool!
Speaking of vehicles, did they ever show where the employees at the station parked their own vehicles? I would think in the back, but I really don’t know.
Anyway, I appreciate the work that went into this video. Your dedication to your craft is commendable! 👍🏻

In the back. There was an episode that showed Roy’s Porsche 356 (Tigh’s actual car, I think) and it was parked in back. And I think Johnny’s Land Rover (Mantooth’s actual vehicle) was shown in back, too. Going from memory. It’s been some years since I’ve seen these episodes.

You won't see a station sent on multiple calls at same time. So you won't see both vehicles leaving at same time and going to different incidents.
That being said there are times when one unit -- the squad or the engine -- will be dispatched and almost immediately after the other unit is dispatched to a separate incident. In case of the squad being sent first and they call "Station 51" they'll then call something like "Squad 110 in place of Squad 51" as a note that the squad is already out

Hello Rick, I grew up watching the original episodes when they first aired. On season 1 episode 8 Nurse’s Wild and episode 9 Publicity Hound squad 51 makes a left on its own first 20m in. Little trivia, I don’t know the name of the episode. John Gage has to drive squad 51. You see him driving south on Main St crossing Ramona Blvd in the city I grew up in Baldwin Park. I was so excited when I saw this. Thank you for all your efforts.

At 4:14, you said it was season 1 episode 3 if I’m correct. I know the show used a lot of stock footage from L.A. Co. fire dept. but this view was taken by Squad 29 (station 29 in Baldwin Park on Los Angeles St. west of Maine St.) The exact location is facing southbound on Maine at Ramona Blvd.. I used to live in Baldwin Park and drove this direction everyday. Also, I don’t believe squad 51 had a louvered hood but squad 29 did during this time period. Fun facts. I didn’t check the other comments so please forgive me if I repeated anything.

One episode mentioned is Cooks tour not Cooks town a slight error.. Plus it was likely stock footage from the first season and then season 3 from when the Ward arrived .. You'll notice in some footage of the Crown its Captian Hammar or Captian Stanley and a differant crew sometimes that was likely the Engine Jump seat crew from real Engine 127 likely on day one of "going code" stock footage from season 1 just like the "Why" doesn't Johnny drive >>it was due to a lot of stock footage was filmed in 1 day when Mantooth was under the weather (Hung over) from celebrating getting on the shows Pilot and series ..

More superfluous info. In this view, the sun is casting a shadow of the roof lights onto the hood of the vehicle. Squad 51 was equipped with federal signal twinsonic lightbar but in this scene, the roof lights consisted of two forward facing red lights, a siren/speaker in between the two red lights and a single amber flasher facing the rear. The lights and siren/speaker were mounted onto a triangular plate called “The platter” which was mounted on the the front center of the roof. More trivia to astound your friends. Useless info but fun.😊

The town where I live has two fire stations; one is downtown at the municipal complex and the other is in the industrial park. The one at the industrial park only has a few factories and houses to the left, east, before you run out of the city limits. The one downtown is close to being centrally located in the western third of town and depending on the location they are going to they can go in either direction.

Typically a Fire Engine has a water tank and pumps. A Fire Truck usually has a mounted ladder.
There are some which have both features, but, for the purpose of mutual aid requests, they must be specific if they need a Fire Truck or Fire Engine.
    This station had Engine 51.

Larger communities might also have a station towards one edge of the zone they are supposed to cover. I know 1 local station will almost never pull a right ( using same direction as Rick does for this vid ) simply because there is rarely a fire on the docks compared to the residential or collision calls in the other direction. This station is right near the northern boundary for service, they ain't got a boat to go further north. ;)

It's been a very long time since I've watched the show, but it was my favorite as a child. Didn't they announce the address of the Emergency! over the intercom system each time they rolled out? Maybe in each episode the turn is accurate to where the event is? You could do a deep DEEP dive on that.

They had to move the real trucks out of Station 127 when they filmed. Just speculation on my part, but maybe it was easier for them to park them on the street to the left of the station? Whatever the reason was, I imagine there was some production-related issue that made it easier to get footage in one direction than the other.

If you watch episodes after they got the new Engine 51 (S3 and beyond), when they exit, you can see Engine 127 parked on the right side of the building! In seasons 1 & 2, Engine 127 doubled as E51, so the extra truck was not an issue. Both E127 and Truck 127 were parked on the side driveway when stock footage was filmed with the new Ward LaFrance. During S1 & 2, when E127 was used, Truck 127 was on the side but parked far enough back it was not seen in the exit shots.

In the one were there was a large fire in a pricey neighborhood, they went out once to the left with the engine and then when they came back, after being recalled. They went to a call for Rampart and went to right. And when they were finally called to the fire they went to the left. Even though the first time with engine they went left. OK I'm getting confused! Several years ago I had noticed that they seem to always turn the one direction and then following episodes I paid attention to that and saw in two or three episodes they turned the other way. I don't know what seasons or episodes but yes, there are a few episodes that they do turn the other way.

Wasn't the firetruck called Station 51?

No, the truck was truck Or Firetruck 51. They paint Station 51 to denote which station the truck belongs to

Didn't like the way you framed "turn right" or "turn left". They are doing the turning so it should be from their perspective.

Hi Rick. Question for you if you know or can find out. I grew up in the seventies and this show was one of my favorites BUT I remember certain episodes it was called” Emergency 51”. I know I saw that. I wasn’t dreaming. Mandela effect you think? Or were certain episodes named that?

    • @ricknineg
      @ricknineg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

So looking at the episodes by name, there isn’t an episode with the name Emergency 51. There are TH-cam videos with that name and even some websites. But they have said the phrase on the show

@@ricknineg Thanks. It’s very strange but I know I saw the title card at the beginning for the show saying “Emergency 51”. Must be a Mandela effect thing as that’s what I thought the show was called until I watched it in the 2000’s.

I remember seeing this name change in some of the opening credits as well. Nothing else in the show seemed any different. Very observant 😊

Well 80 percent right against 20 percent left is just still mostly going right. With these scenes. Well it's common for Hollywood to do this. All they have to do is use their. Magic and edit. Those scenes to make it look like at least. By taking some parts of the same scene to make it look different. Could it be a cult thing . ? Well Hollywood is full of that. Without people knowing. But not just Hollywood. Who knows..

I am almost certain that the clips where they turn right is just the same footage recycled over and over since that red VW is there every time.

Probably someone who worked closely. I went through 20 Emergency exits and very few of them were recycled. Most all shot differently

You overly complicated your description of what left and right are. Just say they turn left and trust you viewers to be smart enough to figure it out.
