I like how you tackled the problem head on instead of choosing to remain blissfully ignorant about what could potentially lie beneath the surface there. Inspiring! Most people would have been afraid to tear up the deck floor on an old house as doing so would most likely entail an arduous repair and/or replacement. Great job!

I always recommend crushed stone underneath new build porches and decks. This allows for any water to filter through the stone so it doesn't allow standing water to continuously evaporate on the bottom side of the boards. Since there is no sunlight underneath the decks moisture is always an issue.

    Kick ass process.
I know a thing or two about renovation surprises.
I bough my house in Amsterdam in 2006 and every time I lift a tile I find something that takes 20 times the effort to fix right. Construction workers in the Netherlands are most times a bad experience. Last project had to be redone twice in a year.
Lately I am refusing to pay people to do a crappy job when I can do it myself, just slowly.
I'm really enjoying your channel :)

Seems many care about your feet. I actually think it's great you do what is fun for yourself! Being aware of consequences and choose what you want is your right.
I enjoy to see how you have an idea and then just materialize it.
By the time people in the comments here think what safety boots they should buy to paint their deck, you already built one!
Please continue focusing on what makes you happy. If everyone knew how to make themselves happy, what a wonderful place it would be 💕

The rotten joists remind me of rotten floor joists in a half bath that an inspector missed. Yes, after deconstruction of a sagging floor, a leaking toilet was being supported solely by 3 layers of thick linoleum. Great job and kudos to your brother for helping out and thumbs up to your skill.
I'm not the safety police but I am experienced in the school of fails. Kicking rotten timbers with rubber soles , lose your balance and break a shin or puncture with a nail. Also using gloves in this situation might prevent a visit to the ER. At 74 I've been there. My wife and I love your show.

I would highly recommend using bolts or lag screws to secure the new joists. Deck screws are not engineered for shear loading and can creep over time till failure. And if moisture and termites have been an issue in the past, this is even more important since the substrate (i.e., wood) may deteriorate over time.

The discovery of the damaged porch and underneath is not uncommon for existing homes, but whenever you reach underneath the porch to remove rot and damage, always wear gloves or use a Shop Vac. Rusty nails, splinters and insects are not things to grab w/o gloves or a Shop Vac.

You can realy stand your man as a woman, i like those.
As a tip (like other coments below this one} Its very important to have a good air flow under the porch construction. it will make your wood dry faster after wet days. Keeps it free from humungus fungus, and make it a nice place for ground spiders who take other bugs that want to eat your wood.
About the chainsaw, Take please a steady position to have full control over your chainsaw.
(don,t sit down and cut sideways) in this one you had to kneel with your left legg on the floor and your right legg standing in the hole. In that order you have your body ,face and cut all in the same direction. in case of a kick-up the saw could hit your pretty head...please keep it pretty for us ;-)

Just a thought, but wouldn't it have been better to have used treated lumber, as well as marine grade plywood so your not having to replace your work down the road? At most, perhaps putting a coat of paint on the back of the plywood, or Thompson's Water Sealer on the joists and plywood.
