One time I was wearing heels so high I couldn't cross the street in time. My then boyfriend stood in the intersection like a traffic cop and held his hand out yelling "Stop in the name of fashion!"

I agree with the ‘overdress’ theory. When offices went business casual, I still dressed up. Not every day, but still wore skirts, jackets and dresses. If someone commented, I would say “ now no one knows when I’m interviewing”

    Love this! Thanks Anna!
    Other fashion mistakes?
Throwing most clothes, bras especially, in the OMG the dryer. I hand wash a lot, and my bras get a quick soak in the bathroom sink every night.
Wire hangers. Hangers that wreck the shoulders of your tops, jackets, knits, coats...
Not considering your proportions. I'm 5'2" and I am super careful about the length of tops, jackets, and dresses. I tuck in, a lot. And, as you point out in another video, cropped and capris, especially those that are baggy, just nooooooooooooooooo.
Buying things that are too small because one day you will fit into them. While you might be able to diet and exercise your way into it, you might find that it doesn't flatter your new shape or is not your (new) style, or is out of style. I lost 130 pounds during Lockdownia (which was long here in Canada) and I am constantly giving away stuff I bought (mostly on sale) a year ago because it really doesn't do a thing for me. (I was bored. I watched a lot of influencers and shopped online and on eBay wayyyyyyyyy too much.)
Not getting a cobbler to put rubber soles/heels on shoes and boots. So many shoes have plastic soles and/or heels which are slippery and dangerous. Also, footwear lasts longer.
Not taking advantage of belts to finish an outfit or cinch in your waist to give you shape or to make your legs look longer.
Too many colours. Stick to three.
Too much. Too many accessories and add-ons. Back when I was a girl -- I'm 71 -- my Mom and aunts followed the rule of 7. They'd add up "points" for their outfits: one for the dress, one if it had a print or was bright, one for a hat, one more if it was a major hat (we had milliners in the day), one for shoes, one more if they were a bright colour, one for a bag, one for discreet jewelry, one for more than two pieces of jewelry.... etc. When you hit 7, you had to take stuff off.
And I totally agree with dressing for the occasion. You will have more confidence. People respect people who seem to respect themselves. We have become such a sloppy society and I think it's affected how we function as a society. Call me old-fashioned but ...

I looove the idea of your clothes making the statement of who you are, the outside representing and showing who you are on the inside. I have worked hard these last couple of years to create a sophisticated, kind, intelligent and effortless wardrobe, but it does not express my creativity. Going to work on adding a dash of creativity from now on to express that part of me. Thank you so much for that tip. Extremely helpful.

Thanks, Anna. Your manner is so fun. The only one that didn't resonate with me was impulse shopping. All my favourite clothes and shoes were impulse-bought - when I deliberately look for items I end up getting dowdy ones.
Something that has revolutionised my style (I don't care for what's in fashion) and the variety I can squeeze from my closet is using a closet app. I've used 3, but they all have the same benefit. I have all my clothes photographed so when shopping I can think about what a potential item might go with. And all my good outfit ideas are saved for easy reference when getting dressed. When I get a new item, I spend an hour or so trying it with various combinations and saving the winning ideas on my app.

It is challenging to find no-show socks for standard sneakers that don't end up getting dragged down the back of your heels when you walk...😵‍💫 🙄, which is both annoying and will hasten blister development. I finally found some, but, like you, I often wear higher shoegear, like my Doc Martin dupes and some Madden Chelsea boots I got a few months ago - for those, I generally wear socks that I expect and want to be seen.

Excellent observations! As a hobby sewer, one that I might add is 'ensure your garments fit properly'. If not; take them to a seamstress or kiosk and have them altered. i.e.: It's amazing just a shortening of a half inch will do. Too deeply cut armholes in a sleeveless top can be easily altered. Etc. Etc.

So many good points here! My two favorites are: 1) Don't hang clothes you don't love wearing in your closet; 2) Try new styles. I recently tried on jogger pants for the first time (I know, like what rock do I live under??) because I'm old enough I thought I'd look ridiculous in them, but turns out with the right fabric choice, I LOVE those pants!!! Why didn't I try them sooner? LOL.

I have a messed up foot (17 operations and total reconstruction) and cannot wear any kind of dress shoes. I was in tears trying to find shoes for my wedding, until my husband both had a moment and said ‘Chuck Taylor high tops’ at the same time. We both wore them (him black and me white) and had a blast - people in Las Vegas thought we were an art exhibit. Now my son is getting married on the beach in Cancun and nobody needs to see my deformed foot, so I bought bright pink Chuck Taylors to match my dress. My husband is wearing his Chucks in support of me! Is not fashionable, but it’s fun and gets people talking.

I always iron or steam (as appropriate) my clean clothes before I put them back in my closet. I let them air out after, too, they re-wrinkle if worn or stored when damp. I got so frustrated having nothing ready to wear, decades ago, that I adopted this habit. I’m lucky to have a little laundry room where I can hang clothes until I have time to iron or steam a batch. This really helps me get ready faster, with much less frustration. Wrinkled clothes just don’t get worn.

Many years ago, I was working as a costumed character at a renaissance festival. Another performer had appointed herself as "fashion police" and was pointing out the faux pas of various patrons. She indicated with scorn a rather large woman who had chosen a halter and shorts in response to the Texas heat, displaying all her glorious love handles and rolls for the world to see. Instead of agreeing as my colleague expected, I responded, "Actually, I'm a little envious of anyone who is either that contemptuous of or oblivious to public opinion. My hat's off to her!" Bottom line, why do we even care what someone else looks like? As for the visible bra straps, panty lines, or (horrors!) socks, it's hardly a state secret that I'm wearing said garments. If someone is offended by the visual evidence, it's not my problem or concern.

    • @ANNAREID29
      @ANNAREID29  2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Such a great response! I can resonate with dressing for the humid heat ❤️ I don't think anyone gets offended by your bra strap as that would be ridiculous, but it's more so a distraction from you, what you have to say, your personality, or even the outfit you put together.

I went from being very casual to dressing nicer.... We went to see an older movie with live music (it was a silent movie) and I thought that would be an appropriate occasion to dress up. Almost everyone there was dressed casually but the musicians... I felt it was respectful to look nice in appreciation of their efforts.. People definitely do a double take when they see me (its not formal wear) and seem to like it. My goal is to dress like a rich rancher woman from the late 1800s (long skirt, blouse -we watch a lot of westerns). I'm on a music, movies, books, clothes and car styles at least or around 100 years old kick, but thats a different story. We need class and kindness again!

Really liked this! I am a tall plus-size woman, and have found out many years ago, that fashion does not agree with me. 😁
So I started to find MY style, and it came out as classic, all dark bottom-wear (in cotton or linen) and tops in different colours (cotton, linen, silk and some mixed fabrics). Did try different shoes, none with high heels (to tall), and the shoe-style that match everything... ballerina!
And the tip about getting rid of clothes... everytime I move, salvation army gets lots of clothes, shoes and thing that has not been used in a year (or more!).
    Have a nice summer! 🌻

I had no idea that socks were an issue! Have had a look at the no show socks and will get some for summer but I have to say, here in Canada in spring, fall and the dreaded winter, sneaker socks provide warmth as well as shoe lining so we don't get blisters. And also, bug and tick protection as those little buggers are sneaky. I did agree with virtually everything you've pointed out for the mistakes.

I have gotten rid of all clothes that are to small or oversized, Hallelujah, Won't God do It!!🙌🏾 I have been buying new bras and I hate a hanging strap too. Thank's for breaking down cost per wear, I hear that alot but now it is defined 💃🏾😁 I own no heels or other shoes that don't work no matter the love I had for them🙄 I am a style experimenter, but onl6 keep.what works of the new looks. I am focusing on what my style is more, trendy is cute but not to kept as classic items.. Anna, THANK YOU for saying that, CUT those pocket holder threads and back panel one too. YEEES!!!! I don’t remove the thread from pockets in dress pants, blazers, etc. if it’s not visible. Keeps me from stuffing things in them or putting my hands in them. That eventually ruins the line of the clothing. For me the clothing looks good longer. Of course, I remove it from a jacket vent or if it’s obviously sewn shut.

Could not agree more about the cross stitch on the back flap of a jacket. I saw someone on Family Feud with the cross stitch. And I cannot tell you how many people I have stopped and told them they can remove this thread, men included. I’m guilty of sometimes keeping the stitching on a jacket pocket if there’s a flap to cover it. Jacket pockets have a tendency to sag once the stitching is removed. Cheap jacket? Maybe. Love your channel, plus my maiden name is Reid.

I went to a Swiss wedding where the groom's family were appropriately dressed but the bride's family, including the mother of the bride, turned up in really casual clothes and what seemed to be hiking\climbing sneakers. It gave the impression they couldn't be bothered. The groom's mother eventually got tipsy, sat next to me and threw so much shade at the bride's family. Awks!🤣🤣🤣

Love "cost per wear" since this is the rule I follow for years but people seem to not understand. "It costs only 3 euros" - well yes and it looks like that.
Usually I use the saying: "I'm not so rich that I can afford to buy cheap things."

Hi Anna , great points been there , but not anymore. I still make a few mistakes from your list 🤪🤣 impulsive shopping - guilty😂 .; shopping too much - guilty ; But everything else, i think i overcame 😅 i do invest in expensive, but great quality timeless pieces, but i do not buy full price. TRR and Ebay , sales on FF and other sites, is good way to go. Its crazy what kind of deals you can find. 😳😜 Versatility is another very important point. Since i started buying clothes, if i can create at least 3-4 looks, i am so less wasteful. And experimenting is also makes you not to get bored with your closet. I wear so many different styles these days. Colors, mixing high end with low end. The possibilities are endless.I need to check out your steamer. I just bought one from QVC , but i dont know if its good one. I havent taken from the box yet😂. But no i do not wear wrinkled clothes 😳 Have a blessed day 🙏🧡

Oh my gosh your number one made me laugh, because I didn’t have a steamer for a while and a new one was just delivered yesterday! Kept procrastinating on getting one just because I was so busy, but wasn’t wearing a lot of my clothes because they were so wrinkled. And getting new bras is totally my problem. I am a 34 a but always have trouble finding a good bra because my breasts are wide but they are not full, a really weird predicament, and the ones I have are poorly fitted . Thanks for the reminder Anna! Love your videos you’re just too funny. 💕💕💕

Over the years I've learned that in most brands, I'm a small in tops but in the brand Free People, a small is too big. I also learned that if jeans are low or mid rise, I can comfortably fit into a 6 but if they're high rise, I have to size down to a 4. In Free People, no matter what I buy from them I have to size down because the items are intentionally oversized to begin with.

If you feel confident and comfortable in your fashion choices, you can normally pull it off. That's not necessarily applicable to the 3-4 hundred pounder who decides that what's in envogue is apropos IF it comes on their size. FOUNDATION AND ATTITUDE PLAYS A BIG ROLE HERE. THX FOR THE FASHION GODS !

I’m a 55 yr old dog sitter and live in leggings and joggers. I do feel kind of dumpy sometimes and I tell my husband that I wish I wore makeup more often or whatever. He looked at me and said “no one’s stopping you but you”. I also have chronic pain so I don’t go too many places anyway. But you’re right. If you wear dumpy clothes (even if they’re cute) you start to feel dumpy.
