- In this video I will show you how to easily unlock hidden features and customizations for your 5th Gen 4Runner!
All you need is an app called Carista and a $30 scan tool

Great video! Thank you for making this information available on TH-cam!
30 bucks to get the windows roll down mod is awesome. Thanks for showing us the free trial hack. Just got a 2023 sr5 premium in black brand new. 1st car in my life and now im broke lol. I got 4.99% APR which isnt awful though i guess.
I went to my dealer after just buying the 4Runner, I saw another dealers video about how they can adjust the windows with the key FOB my dealer said it’s not an option. Lying sacks of poop
Worth it for the Seat Belt Ding Disable alone!
Great job on the video! Thanks for making it. If it allows me to simply unlock my rear hatch from the remote I will be thrilled.
Very cool vid, thanks for posting!
Awesome info, going to try to do some of these with my Autel 👍
Yes you can do all his and more with Autel
thank you so much for the video. Sucks that it isn't just built into the key fob like my Honda. Do you unplug the scanner after you make changes on the app?
Yes you unplug it after
Thanks for sharing!
Are you able to set it to roll down the rear window with the rest of the windows/sunroof? Thanks love the videos!
The rear window doesn’t seem to roll down with the rest and I can’t find an option to add it. Hope that helps
My 2010 limited use to roll down with all windows rear window & sunroof. I sold her and she’s still on the road at 400k miles in Idaho, USA.
You bet
I had a 92’ civic Si, it had an aftermarket alarm, which closed the sunroof when the key was shut-off. I have 2 cars I would like to do this. Also opening and closing all windows would also be good. Can the dealer or someone else do this?
I loved this video. I learned so much. Thank you!
It looks a lot easier than with Carly. I tried to do it with my 2023 Ltd and it keeps telling me to stand on one leg while doing a cartwheel then the update crashes. I'll try this for sure!
Alleluia!! This was way too easy!! Thank you so much! I can also do a wheel swap with new TPMS. Can't wait to get to my new off-road wheels and tires. I also fixed the Defrost auto full speed, that was annoying.
Can you use any obd2 dongle? To access carista?
Thank you for making videos like these! I was able to do this all for free using the exact same steps that you showed here and I also cleaned my MAF sensor and changed my diff fluid thanks to your videos and channel.
I found many of these features could be enabled or disabled via the existing menu in the vehicle settings. Yes, there are a few unique things with this app, but I don’t care if my sunroof and windows open with the press of the button. The single best feature of the app was to disable the seatbelt chime, the light still comes on, but the annoying sound is gone.
What year is yours?
@@T4Rgarage 2022
@@D6EH I think the newest 5th gens 21-up have more advanced menus on the upgraded infotainment system
The Seatbelt chime... yesss
Some people don't care if they can disable the key chime.
Any way to adjust your alarm sensitivity? Mine seems to be a little on the touchy side! (2023 TRD PRO)
Nah
Great video, thanks.
Can this be applied also to 3rd gen tacomas?
I just checked, the app shows all the available options for your car after you select it from the list, but prior to making any purchase, it turns out the 3rd gen tacoma have less options, and sadly it doesn't include the windows opening by the key fob, so I'll pass thank you 😂.
Thanks anyway, appreciate your video.
Quick question, at 3:34 in your video, you chose an "option", kiwi3. How do you know which option to choose? Thanks, just ordered this from Amazon.
Kiwi3 just seems to work more universally with all OBD2 readers
@@T4Rgarage Appreciate the quick reply. Your videos are great. Very informative and you're a natural in front of the camera. I'm subscribed.
@@jesuslovesbass3944 Thank you so much!
thanks for the awesome video. glad I found your chan..... looks like it said a/c heater you scrolled pass. is that correct. can you turn the ac/ heat on if you left a key fob in the car? would be perfect for my gf
I’m not sure but Carista has all the options on their website for each make and model.
Thanks for posting. Can you program it to not shut off the engine if you remote start and open the door?
Sorry, I cannot confirm that as mine does not have remote start from factory. I think they added it to my model the following year/release
🤣🤣🤣 wouldn't that be an awesome customization!
What what what?? Mine doesnt shut off the engine if i open the door...
Fuel pump safety shut off, some do, some don’t…
I want to know this answer also, my wife just got a 21 sr5 and toyota said it was a safety feature. I don't understand stand what it's saving.
Would love to be able to use the cameras "On-Demand", and not have them turn off if I exceed 24 mph, or shift from reverse to drive. Any camera changes available in the app? Thanks.
See 4 runner lifestyle full time camera mod. :)
Buy nearly any aftermarket headunit. You can turn various cameras on when desired. Also, 99% of the changes described in the video can be made.
Yesssss
Nah
Make sure BT is on, lol. I had a 2004, now I have a 2007. I might need to upgrade 10 years or so for BT. I know you said 5th gen, I just thought I might learn something.
can you have the heat and ac run without the ignition on.. and then when the battery deploes the engine can turn on.. (sleepin in the 4runner on a cold /hot night )
The heat runs off of the engine and the compressor for the AC is a huge battery drain. You're better to just leave the car running
No, especially not AC, the compressor is mechanically driven by the engine (by a belt)
Is there an option to turn wireless function off and on for key fob? I have the rare software glitch that when you adjust door lock volume settings it turns your wireless function off for the key fob and the key fob no longer works
If you go to the carista website and enter your year model etc. it will tell you what you can change
Can you elaborate on your brief mention of "Torque?"
I've never heard of it and would like to check it out
Torque is a smartphone app to use with your OBD2 scan tool. They used to have a great free version but I think they only do paid for versions now
I’d now recommend “car scanner” as the app of choice
I don’t understand the canceling the free trial thing. Are you able to make any customizations after you subscribe and cancel?
Register for the free 30 day trial - make the changes you want - cancel before the 30 days is up to avoid being charged monthly beyond that. If you want to make any changes or reverse the changes you made you will need to pay after that.
Can this allow you have the fog lights stay on with the brights?
All the available options are on the carista website, you can search by vehicle.
I have a 2022 TRDOR, would love to be able to turn off the automatic shut off of the radio when engine is off and it's in auxiliary mode. Good info, thx for posting.
Please check out the Carista website. It will let you select your model year and provide you with all the options you can change
I noticed that if I want the stereo to stay on when I’m parking, I press the start/stop button right before I shift into park, and then the audio will continue to play without restarting the infotainment system.
Does this work with the GX460 as well? Should be the same OS?
It does work with the 2nd gen Lexus GX
@@T4Rgarage kewl, Thank you 🙏 🤲
What's a full list of unlockable functions?
Does the live monitoring show any information about the transmission temperatures?
I believe so, I’ll confirm that when I get home. I think you can read both torque converter and pan temps
So Carista has very basic live monitoring and only monitors a few sensors but I tried the Veepeak OBD 2 tool with an app called “car scanner” and it showed the PAN and Torque converter temps for the 4Runner. It also showed about 30 other measurements in real-time. That’s the beauty of the veepeak tool, it works flawlessly with many other apps. Hope that helps 👍🏼
Awesome!! Thanks for the info
How can i turn remote start on my 2022 4runner.. i already tried with the key fob
I think you have to buy one. I feel like my 2023 has one, i just havent figured out how to use it.
So this is an after market option to not shut down the 4Runner when the door is opened.
The unit is a DEI or directed piece called a DB3 module and it works in a stand alone application with your factory remote fob but if programmed correctly it will not shut down when the door is opened.
I have remote start built in to my 2023. press unlock, unlock, then hold unlock down for 5 to 7 seconds.
Toyota said I needed to use my app and pay a 10$ a month subscription for it, but I found this key fob method on a reddit thread.
Once you enable features do you need to keep obd reader plugged in?
Make changes and remove, does not need to stay in
Cool, so we can make "free" changes with their 1wk trial
Why this isnt offered as a built-in option by Toyota is kinda surprising
"In the future you'll own nothing and be happy about it" WEF overlords
Is there a kit 4runner to close/open tailgate automatic like all modern cars
I'd like to play music videos on my screen. Is that possible?
would Techstream do the same?
Great video!!
Can it be used to turn off guide lines on back up camera?
When the camera is active, you should be able to push a button on the screen to disable the guidelines
You can do that without a special app
So, I received the little gizmo from Amazon, and after playing around with it and finally getting it to connect (kiwi3 didn't work at all, had to use a different option, no big deal) I have to admit i was a bit disappointed. It works fine, no problems with functionality, but honestly, out of all the possible changes that you can make, I found only two to be worth changing.
Opening the windows with a long push on the remote is a nice option, so I activated that function. Unfortunately, you can't close the windows the same way. You have to use the switches in the vehicle to close the windows after you've opened them all. Not a big deal, but worth noting.
The only other change that I felt was worth making was to deactivate the automatic door unlock when the vehicle is put in park. I prefer to unlock the doors when I want them to unlock, and that's for safety reasons. If I'm in a bad area of town for some reason, or there's someone hanging in the area that I just arrived at, and they trigger my Spidey-sense, so to speak, I don't want my doors to unlock until I deem it safe for them to be unlocked, know what I mean? So, I have it set to unlock the doors when I open the driver-side door, or I use the unlock switch on the door itself.
Aside from that, I really didn't see anything I felt was worth changing. Now, of course, that's just what works for me, I don't in anyway assume what someone else might prefer. So, there it is, two changes made in a total of about 10 minutes of connecting and looking at the options and making the two changes I decided on. I canceled my trial and that's pretty much the end of it. Sort of anticlimactical if you ask me. Is it worth the money to buy one of these gizmos? Ehhh, that's one of those "six of one, half a dozen of the other" issues. If you feel spending $30 and change to make a couple of changes in function to your vehicle is worth it, then it's worth it, right? Peace to you, and thanks again for your videos, I really enjoy them.
Keep your obd2 sensor handy. They are great to have if you or a friend come across an unexplainable check engine light. I have the blue driver obd2 sensor and it saved my grandmother money by telling her exactly what was wrong with her car. We found that it was a simple sensor we could replace in the driveway. Never had to take it to a shop. It’s paid for itself already.
What was the different option? I can't get veepak to work with carista AT ALL
Spot on...truly a case where something is done only because it can be done. I did not see any function that I felt would enhance my experience in starting my 4Runner, drive 3 miles to the store for a loaf of bread and return home.
I have a 22 Trd sport, can you activate the remote start?
TRDJon posted a video a while back that was about $120 that connected between the relay under the steering column. That works great..but shuts off when the door opens.
Will this work for my 5th gen 4runner SR5?
Yes it will
@T4r garage, is this compatible with 4th gen 4Runners?
You can check on the Carista website 👍🏼 Not sure off hand sorry
These are all available with 2020-present 4runners in the vehicle settings except for the window stuff
They let you turn off things like the seatbelt chime too?
Does it enable any 4x4 features?
There's an option called Costco Crawl which is really neat. I use it all the time!
Can you set it up to lock while running and idle while locked ?
This would be a great option to lock my dog in the car with the AC running
If it will work ? You can't lock the news one with the remote while running. I'm having a heck of a time finding a new SUV that will lock and run when the dog is in it .
And not a dealer on the planet seems to give a crap if I buy one or not.
Yeah I did same thing
any way to turn on fogs without having to turn on headlights?
yes a switch
@@ilikethedirtlmao not all models allow that, champ. Did you challenge yourself to run through every comment and say something ignorant?
@tonybrown5425 hey Champ sorry your not smart enough to figure out out.
Tell me how to get memory seats yo!
Do you know how I can get Netflix to work on the 4Runner infotainment system?
Will any of this work on a Tundra?
You can check on the Carista webpage
what are the heater/ac options? i’d prefer that the AC not turn on when temp dial set to ‘max ac’

Can
this monitor trans temp?
Yes, it will give you two readings. Transmission and Torque converter
So once you make a change and cancel the account will all changes made be disabled?
No, they will stay
Awesome, thanks for posting!
There’s also a free app car scanner that will give you three mods free before asking to upgrade.
can you reset tpms sensors with this?
I don’t think it would be the best app for that but the OBDii reader by Veepeak and an app like “car scanner” may be your solution
@@T4Rgarage i reset my tpms sensors with carista and veepeak! i havent driven yet to see if it comes on again. i think my metal valve caps was cause of warning light being on. when i did diagnostics it read the tire pressure so i just reset the 4 faults. bottom line dont use metal valve caps. Thanks
@@donphillips4492 good to know, thanks for reporting back! 👍🏼
How can I see video in my 4Runner driving?
Glue an iPad to the steering wheel.
Interesting but idk why these cheap devices insist on chargin a subscription for a software that barely would get used. Completely against subscription services in most cases because they are ripoffs forcing you to pay for something continuously that would likely work for many years without them messing with it
What "gen" is my 2021 nightshade?
5th
Can you have a single press of the unlock button on the key fob unlock all doors, not just the driver door?
I would check the Carista website. Search by vehicle and it will show you all the options
This should be a standard feature of the car, look in the menu settings via the entertainment system. Under vehicle, you should find door lock settings.
@@D6EH If this was a BMW, yes. Toyota, no.
@@vim_usr2753 while I can’t speak to every Toyota, the 2022 4Runner definitely has this option built-in. It’s under Menu>Setup>Vehicle>Customization>DoorLockSettings
I changed mine with the remote itself, I found a video somewhere I just forgot where... But it was very easy.... I think I pressed the unlock button till the red bulb started blinking and then pressed the other button or was it the other way around it's been too long lol.... Mine is a push button start I don't know if that makes a difference
Is a 2023 a fifth gen or 4 gen ty

This is the only vehicle I have ever heard of that has no handle sensors in the rear doors. You have to touch the front door handle to open the back door, and it's every day! Imagine if you have kids. Silliness.
My 2014 Jeep Cherokee is like that as well. Still a heck of a lot better than digging the key fob out of your pocket to click the unlock button. You get used to it quickly
I going to ask the dealer to program the windows & sunroof to open with the key fob
I was told it would cost $175 but they would do it for $100...
@@jessicariley9714I hope you told them where to go after that.
@@markl1473 I was told it would cost $174 but they would do it for $99

The unit is a DEI or directed piece called a DB3 module and it works in a stand alone application with your factory remote fob but if programmed correctly it will not shut down when the door is opened. I had it installed on my 22 Limited and works flawlessly.

So how much do you risk damaging your computer with using a Chinese app with a Chinese OBD?
Is there a free version?
Piratebay
It’s one thing if you have to pay for the app to use it but it’s another think if you have to pay for the app EACH YEAR (if you don’t use the free trial and then cancel). Quite greedy on the part of the app designer
as your 4runner has google and netflix
Anyone else try this on SR5?
Yes. Works well for a lot of features, but remote start is not possible on my 2018 SR5.
What?! You have to pay a subscription to use unlocked functions? The 4runner, It's my property.
You should blur out the VIN number
I wish I could unlock remote start
So, it only works if you pay and only for the amount of time subscribed to? BOGUS!
Are they not offering a free trial period anymore? In the video I gave specific instructions on how to make the changes for free using the trial
@@T4Rgarage when your subscription is over do you get to keep your mods? And I'm guessing you only get 1 free trial so there's no going back
