I saw them on the Broken Frame tour first and it was an amazing experience. Id not seen or heard anything like it. Id seen OMD but they had a drummer, the bass guitar and even a bit of saxophone on one song. But DM were three synths, a reel to reel tape machine, and a captivating, magical singer who held the crowd in his hand even back then. Ive seen them 22 times since, but that tour in 1982 will forever be one of my most cherished concert experiences. And I feel so lucky that I heard them play things like My Secret Garden, Monument, Nothing To Fear, Shouldn’t Have Done That and The Sun And The Rainfall. Happy times indeed ❤😊

Whether it was tossing a rock on the threshold of a patio door, recording the sound of an engine, or shooting fireworks and capturing it on tape and turning it into sometimes unique and magical in the studio. DM pushed the boundaries which paved the way for their success. Sadly after Alan left finding and utilizing those types of sounds became a rhing of the past. Depeche Mode is and will always be my favorite band.
I’m not an Alan fan as such. I enjoyed what he did but for me he left a long time ago, wont be coming back, and his bandmates are still making records I really enjoy. I do agree though that the sampling is missed. All those strange sounds that used to punctuate Stripped or Clean or To Have And To Hold. They added so much to the music. Imagine something like Before We Drown or Should Be Higher with some intelligent, peculiar sampled sounds ! Id rather Martin revisited that technology for a time and turn off the Eurorack synths for a while. Go and buy an old Emulator, Mart 😊
