It's too bad that the applause was cut because Leontyne received the ovation of the evening. Only the response to Leona Mitchell singing "Ernani, Involami" was anywhere near as enthusiastic. It's especially interesting when you know that greats of the past like Licia Albanese, Bidu Sayao, Blanche Thebom, Inge Borkh, Frederick Jagel and Giulietta Simionato were in the audience as honored guests. While interviewing Kurt Herbert Adler, Timoty Pfaff said of this performance: "... When she came and sang that "Zweite Brautnacht" at the end, I had never heard such a thing. That was an amazing performance!"
Spectacular! What an entrance, for one thing! And then she reaches those stratospheric vocal heights with effortless ease, security and shimmering, sensual beauty. Just as Strauss should be performed, in my humble opinion. Bravissima!!!
You just want to go on Home to Glory on the celestial waves of this voice. 😭❤🙌🏾
She was also privileged to sing with that fantastic orchestra. What a pairing.
Bravissima! A role she should have sang onstage!!!! I love this. Thank you for sharing this treasure.
I absolutely adore Price’s Strauss, she could make her voice sore with an ease most sopranos couldn’t! Brava!!
She pushing her voice in this if you listen carefully.
Though not one of Strauss's most popular operas, this aria is as good as he got.
