    She always sang with such regal grace! So "simple and easy" looking, but it twas not that easy! And I always loved how she always acknowledges the orchestra/pianist, before accepting the audience applause :)

    Thank you for posting this! This is her Dec. 10, 1963 UN Day appearance in the General Assembly, with her coach Otto Guth accompanying. And you’re quite right, she’s at her early peak, at 36.

      @@fabriziogarzi9892 Do you mean a song recital? Her 1965 recital debut in Carnegie Hall was brought out by RCA under the “Rediscovered” series. That is available on TH-cam here: th-cam.com/play/OLAK5uy_lnl6KyglNGf3RJSWpmj-9SisuJtmUjqJg.html
      If you mean a video of a recital, there are excerpts on TH-cam from recitals in 1976 and 1994 - - but unfortunately none of her hundreds of recitals was videotaped professionally.

      I've seen Madame Price twice in concert 1974 & in 1985 the same year she retired from the operatic stage. In 74 we had never heard such an incredible dazzling vocal display. We had never heard anything like it her voice was so Primal and true as to how she interpreted Verdi , Puccini, Motzart. Madden Price is the greatest voice to come out of America. That is not debatable it is true. And in increble dignified stage presence. So beautiful regal and refined. I have had four favorite Sopranos Our Montse. Madame Cotrubas Madame Price & our Maya LA Divina. Today we have Madame Hernandez. Thank you for posting. Sincerely Arnaud Bourbon Amaral 🇫🇷

    She sounds great here! Her vowels are still clear at this stage and hand't developed that cloudy, muddy, unclear vocal production that plagued her later years. Even her lower notes are stronger. Those low notes were just gasps of hollow air later on

    • @liedersanger1
      @liedersanger1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What unnecessary points! Every voice deteriorates. I can’t think of one that didn’t, but Leontyne held onto more of her unique beauty than most. Go here for a spectacular performance of the same aria from 19 years later, which by the way is a long time in vocal terms: th-cam.com/video/uGkRqItf03U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aqeByWJGBQnUIZtf

    • @St.Garoosh
      @St.Garoosh 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@liedersanger1 you obviously can’t separate being a fan from being an observer of quality sound. Her low notes were always a travesty and you could barely understand what she was saying, same as Sutherland, whose diction was atrocious, despite her other vocal talents. That is a technique issue, not a deteriorating voice issue. Price had a beautiful voice but it was plagued with other issues that worsened as she aged. Listen to Tebaldi, Nilson, Boninsegna, Traubel in the same aria and you won’t find those lower note issues, and all had clear vowels production. No singer is perfect and all had some sort of flaw but anytime someone remotely mentions an issue with Price, regardless of other praise given, the operatic shit hits the fan and people lose it.

    I saw Leontyne Price sing "Pace, pace" in 1996 at Symphony Hall in Boston. I was sitting in the last row, and even then, 33 years after this performance and at 69 years old, she was thrilling. One of a kind.

      Why do you think we are talking about her later weaknesses when we have an example here of her singing at its best?
      It’s like talking about Tebaldi’s flat high notes or Callas’ wobble in their later years when confronted with their great singing. Every singer deteriorates, but the truly great ones continue to offer something, as did Leontyne in her later performances.

    • @SteveL2012
      @SteveL2012 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The best singers express with their voices. Price is one of them. Expression does not equate to chewing up the scenery, like so many sopranos do today to distract from poor singing and technique. It takes real physical discipline to sustain this sound. Others who knew this that pop into my head immediately: Nilsson, Tebaldi, TeKanawa, Freni, Cosotto, the list goes on, but a pantheon of greats. Hold the chest high, create a streaming core of sound. Express the music with the text and score. No writhing around the stage.

    • @Shahrdad
      @Shahrdad 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@SteveL2012 I'm not talking about stage deportment or physical acting, only about how expressive the singing is. For me, Price's expressiveness was always much more generalized than particular and pointed. It lacked the thousands of colors and the light and shadows and word-pointing you hear from the great interpreters. I think some of this might be due to the fact that Price was madly in love with her own sound, as she admitted many times in interviews. I think that resulted in her always putting the "Price Sound" first and foremost, and the voice never became that of Aida, or Leonora, or Liu, etc. It was always always always Price, and it was an absolutely gorgeous outpouring of beauty. I love her for what she was and what she gave so generously. If I want to bask and soak in beautiful sounds, I listen to her. When I want to know the character, I look elsewhere. That being said, I don't think anyone can hold a candle to her Bess.

    • @sw5114
      @sw5114 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ShahrdadYou both make some valid points. Price is vocally unmatched in most of her roles. The glory of her sound is before anything else. There are subtleties in her interpretive choices, but not huge overt acting differentiations. She does respect Verdi greatly and can bring out his line as very few have been able to do so well. Leontyne brings out the grand in Grand Opera. You want deep sensitivity in acting go to Callas.

    • @sw5114
      @sw5114 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ShahrdadBTW could have done without the comment on Price and Bess. Rather disingenuous.

    • @Shahrdad
      @Shahrdad 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sw5114 There is nothing disingenuous about it. The singing is magnificent, and there is the word-pointing and coloring and fire that she does as Bess which I have not heard in any of her other performances. Perhaps it had something to do with singing in her mother tongue or singing in a role that she had performed hundreds of times on stage. But I have to yet hear anyone come within a hundred miles of her in that role.
