    UPDATE: When I filmed this video my DJI Mic 2 didn't seem to work when I connected it to my phone (which is odd as it usually does), but I just realised it was because my phone case hadn't allowed the RX to be fully inserted - I completely forgot to even check it 🙃 I know, what a fail on my part! 🤦🏾‍♀
    But I've since tried it again and the mic does work, so you don't have to hold your phone to record audio; maintaining that hands-free approach, but the audio still doesn't sound great. I'll do a follow-up so you can hear it.

      @geosol19 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      apparently, dji mic 2 can be connected to the phone via bluetooth too.
      not sure if they've added this recently or if it was always there, you just need to hold the link button on the dji mic 2 until the blue LED starts blinking quicker, indicating pairing mode.
      just waiting for the neo to arrive, to test if it will work recording the audio this way, as it seems to be iffy with the regular camera app.

      @@geosol19 Yeah, in general with the DJI Mic 2 connected to the phone via Bluetooth, the audio quality, in my opinion, sounds poor in comparison to using the RX th-cam.com/video/XEDV7FXdCVQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vHeyfzaCnixNbOxA

      I really feel DJI are testing the waters with this drone... on one hand it serves as an inexpensive vlogger cam / capturing quick moments, and on the other hand, it is a mini Avata 2 / tiny whoop, tickling the fancy of a rookie fpv. But DJI are definitely onto something here, especially if they can nail down the video quality... I do envision a Neo Pro series in the (near) future. Yes, likely more expensive, but a drone with mini Pro video quality output. This drone is just the start.

    • @Anarchaotically
      @Anarchaotically 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What's unfortunate is that it seems you can't remove the noise of the drone if you record the audio directly on the Mic 2. That could let you go completely hands free.

    I pre ordered one, it's an entry drone, for the day to day person, the person who isn't a content creator and just wants to get in the door, and have fun at family events and trips, for the everyday person the video quality is the least of ones worries as long as it's not pixelated. I do understand the content creator disappointment or lack of enthusiasm for this though.

    Years ago I watched a blind study where everyday folk were asked to compare the sound from a $20,000 Harmon Kardon audio system & a $250 stereo from Sears. Most participants chose the inexpensive Sears system as the better of the two. Point being, most folks care more about the content vs the quality of the image. You'll get a lot more views capturing a UFO at 1080 than you will recording a park overflight at 4K. If viewing on a large format 4K monitor the 4K looks better, but most viewers are watching on their relatively small phone screen.

    • @davidhawkeye2298
      @davidhawkeye2298 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not following your analogy. One would assume the two speaker systems were tested by the same music being played in the same acoustic setting. It’s well known that particularly in older analogue speaker technology, there were so many variables to consider. Popular music played on a cheaper system designed to reproduce that relatively limited range of dynamics, will sound better. To reproduce the range of dynamics that are to be found in a large Orchestra a different approach is required in order to accurately reproduce the range of sounds and the ambience of a concert hall. The difference between 1080 and 4K video is discernible on a phone as much as it is a large Monitor. However most people use TV’s with Rec. 709 colour space , simply because the price of sets using wider colour gamuts makes them very prohibitive to develop and sell. So for most people there is a common viewing experience because size of reproduction of the image is not that variable particularly when considering the colour output. Phone cameras are generally poor despite the claims made by manufacturers, the pixel count is not the main thing that determines the quality of the output from inferior lenses . In general terms and with regard to video generally, there are codes for the camera and the post production processes. Each has to be designed to match the other. These codes are translated into recording modes like Log and Raw formats, and those for post production like LUTs. Logarithmic footage is very flat but it contains more detail of the scene. It’s not intended to be viewed as a final product. The purpose is to capture highlights, shadows and whites with the highest range of precision by getting the most out of the camera’s dynamic range. The colour is mostly missing and has to be added by colour grading of the Log footage. Videographers use Log in order to obtain the best detail in shadows and all other details because they know they can regenerate the colour. Rec.709 is a standard for HD tv. It’s a common language for how colours, brightness and technical details are displayed. It provides consistent video experiences across different TVs monitors and projectors. A 4K video shot in Log such as D Log M - on the Osmo Pocket 3 that is properly processed is going to be superior to a video shot in 1080. Comparing Audio from speakers from years ago with inputs to modern video formats and to also assume most viewers are watching on small phone screens is not a valid conclusion to draw.

    Great video! Nicely summarized.
    After watching a ton of TH-cam videos, I bought one.
    Here’s who it’s for:
    - people who are new to drones. It’s easy and safe to fly, even for supervised kids
    - travellers who carry backpacks and want to limit weight (135 grams vs 755 grams with MP4+RC2) and expense.
    Clearly the weakest parts of Neo are the video quality and the gimbal. For IG or YT vloggers, this might not matter much.

    A bit different perspective here perhaps. I've been doing drones for 4 years, been a serious photographer for 55 years, and I have 6 other drones including Autel Evo 2 6K and DJI Air 3.
    1. I'm not sure I'd want this to be my only drone. Its susceptibility to wind makes smooth video dicey, especially at altitudes of more than a few feet. But I'm sure glad I bought it for what it can do and how easily it does it. It's another option, and the perfect option sometimes.
    2. If you fly it with a DJI controller it's a whole different aircraft. Much more functional. In that case it's not as inexpensive or light to carry, and one might be tempted to go with one of the Mini series. Well, I already have one of those. Thing is, when I'm hiking or trail riding my bike there isn't always a place to put a drone down and get it set up. That simple prep and easy hand launch the Neo can make the difference between it being practical to get a shot or not.
    3. If you fly it with a controller you have much more control over the camera settings. With that, and some ability with Final Cut Pro or a similar video editor, the video quality can be totally fine for posting on the web. Same for stills if you have some skill with Photoshop.

    Great review. I think you are absolutely right about the pros and cons of this drone. I mean if you are just using it to film yourself, you might as well just use your action camera on a longer selfie stick, right?.
    I think it's a great little package if with the fly more because you can then use it like a normal drone and adjust it, but then the price increases and one starts to wonder if it is worth bothering with or better to get one of the mini series drones, that fly longer and have better cameras.
    But I have to say I did see somebody using one of these as an fpv drone and they managed to attach a mini action cam successfully to this neo drone. Etc.

The Neo is a budget friendly, easy to use, lightweight, feature packed little drone, perfect for beginners or for chucking in a bag for holidays and filming the kids etc. IMO, I don't think we should be trying to compare the Neo with the much more expensive DJI drones or expect the same quality. BTW, I believe you said that the Neo Fly More combo retails at less than $200? The basic, one battery Neo costs that, the Fly More combo is quite a bit more expensive.

    I suspect that DJI rushed the release of the NEO to scrape up as much $ as possible before the new Hoverair X1 Pro/ Pro Max come out next month.
    They knew people would rush to buy it even though it wasn't ready but would be fixed in future updates.

    I think the real point of this drone is just for tracking and not carrying around a controller etc. Simple and easy to carry and use. No fuss or time to set it up. For that purpose I think it is a great drone, largely for short clips on social media or TH-cam. The 4K is ok on a sunny day and will likely improve with firmware. I am personally very tempted, but two challenges for me: I can’t stand the whiny pitch AND there is almost nowhere here (B.C. Canada) where you can fly a drone of any size, other than your back yard. No National, Provincial or municipal parks allow drones, so most of our outdoor areas are off limits. Yes, there are some undeveloped forested areas, or some other areas in the mountains, but often these are parks . I think that your summary is quite fair. Still, the simplicity and low cost make it tempting! But it’s so whiny!

      @@TamaraGabrielUK the mini 3 pro is measured at 53 dB at 10 meters, so quite quiet. Someone measured the Neo and it was over 80, but to be fair it was much closer than 10 meters. Curious to see what the Neo ends up at in the same test. In the context of decibels, it a logarithmic increase and that means that every 10-decibel rise results in a sound that is 10 times more intense.

    That's my main problem with the DJI Neo, from the footage I've seen online and from other reviewers the image quality is just not there. At times it looks like video you can get from a cheap action cam. Kind of surprising since this is a DJI product. This seems to be made for first time drone users that don't care much for video quality.

    Tamara Good evening, first of all, great video, you explained the characteristics of the NEO very well... I believe that image quality is really a point to consider in this type of equipment... I believe that due to the limited amount of internal memory and also the Bitrate itself that DJI decided to add to this product, in the end the image quality was compromised... It has a larger sensor than, for example, a mini 2 but it seems to me that it has aggressive processing making the image bad .. but they can update the firmware to adjust this, as for bitrare I believe it will be maintained precisely so that we can maintain the 40 minutes of recording in 4K 30

    You can pair the DJI Mic2 to your phone and get better audio. You can also record directly into the Mic2 and then sync later. Obviously an extra step, but at least yuo'll have decent audio....as long as the the drone is far enough not to hear the engine noise. But to your point, if you're just doing A-oll from a few feet away, better off just using a different camera. I think a nice use case is to record on your Pocket 3 and have the drone follow you as a seocndary cam. :)

    I have the mini 4 pro and shoot with Sony cameras, so quality is important. But do you think this would still have a place for the odd shot where using the pro 4 is not possible or convenient? I’m considering the value of adding this to my kit, especially as the price is low. We see phone footage in documentaries and films, so perhaps ‘capturing’ is now becoming more important than ‘cinematic’. I also think most people watching videos on TH-cam don’t view for quality, they view for the story.

    • @TamaraGabrielUK
      @TamaraGabrielUK  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think that depends on you and it will really come down to what you prioritise. I completely agree that capturing the shot is the most important if it's a shot that would otherwise be missed. However, for me, If I can get that shot by another means and get higher quality footage at the same, I'll always try for the high quality approach. But if the "lower" quality option was all I had to hand, then yeah it'd do and I'd still use the shot.

    Fingers crossed that DJI will take user feedback and release a v2 with the Osmo Pocket's quality. That's basically all I want, but in a pocket drone form factor. Likely would necessitate a price hike...but for better quality footage, it's worth it to me.

    It's a tiny whoop it's not handling 14mph wind. It's not meant for professionals. It's meant for the beginner or a person that wants cool drone shots without dropping over 1k on a mini 4 pro. I bought it because it's a tiny whoop with excellent battery life. The 04 transmission system means reception through walls should be good. I own the avata 1 and 2. The neo is for acro and ripping around in the house when it's super cold in ohio. Plus when it's following you it tries to take the path you take instead of just keeping you in frame. Pretty cool for a 200 dollar selfie drone.
