  • We lost our primary navigation radio on an actual IFR lesson ... and then found ourselves flying home on a dark and stormy night. A great learning experience for both of us .... and hopefully you too. Please enjoy The Finer Points!

    After a night flight during my PPL where the panel was barely illuminated, I now carry two headlamps with red lights and an additional pen light. It was no fun using a cell phone to illuminate the panel. :)

    I keep visiting your channel for real flying material. Never disappoints! It is humbling to see that an experienced pilot like you has real issues during flight, and slight doubts like when you confirmed if the radio call was for you. Some pilots won't show that for pride. On the other hand, you use them as lessons for other pilots watching. Thanks!

    I always don a red headlamp as a backup for instrument panel lighting.. and quite often it serves as the primary light source because most panels I’ve been in have dark holes where there shouldn’t be...

    • @TheFinerPoints
      @TheFinerPoints  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like a great idea. I have found that many are too bright, do you have any solutions for that? Does your have a dimmer?

      I’ve dabbled with a few here and there over the years (especially as I started flying more at night)... I stumbled across an LED headset that I like. This particular one has three intensity levels (all selectable by a single button). The base light is white, but it has a red slider/filter to cover the white light. The nice part about it is post-night flight when I’m no longer dependent upon my night vision I can quickly slide the red filter down to get a much better view into the tank for when I’m putting fuel back into the tank.
      I’d have to check the make/model to see what it is... but I keep it in my flight bag for this exact situation.

      I've really liked the Black Diamond headlamps for flying. The ones I use have continuously dimmable white or red LEDs so you can adjust the brightness to whatever level you need. Also, my CFII had one of these On-Stage 2 LED music lamps that clipped nicely onto the glareshield. on-stage.com/products/view/92651

I like this one because it has a slide up window vs multiple buttons to press (which invariably causes you to hit the white light and blind yourself)

Loved the Chandelles and Lazy Eight I Does. Just curious, why not use VOR #2 for the ILS? Especially since VOR 1 was inop and driven by the 430..My Concern for an Approach would have been that the 430 was potentially not reliable ?

    • @TheFinerPoints
      @TheFinerPoints  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Gary, you mean because the CDI appeared to be intermittent? It's a good point. We saw no other issues when it was tethered to the GPS but your point is valid. Perhaps if the weather was lower and the approach would have been in IMC that would have been a good idea.

    • @xillerrodriguez
      @xillerrodriguez 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using VOR #2 for the ILS would have been impossible, as Nav2 is just a LOC, without a GP indicator.

    • @garygazman3827
      @garygazman3827 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      True , but you can still use it as a localizer approach with step downs. Seriously , What would you do if Glide slope took a crap on an ILS approach?? You would use the step down altitudes and fly a LOC approach and use the LOC minimums,,,SO , not impossible to use NAV 2

    Edited out the last part due to beeping words would sound off a bit eh? Concerning the lighting with red. I don't think its advantageous seeing how light brown and blue of artificial horizon look the same enhancing disorientation. Also, it's worth having your eyes checked since needing a flashlight is a symptom of eyes going. Been there the hard way.

    What causes nav radio failures? Should this ever be a signal to get it on the ground and address before the situation worsens? What if any diagnostics were done on the ground at the away airport? The radio seemed to jump to life as you were making the call. Did it come back up? You say it's compromised, but was it treated that way or did you continue to use it in any capacity?

  • @GaryMCurran

    Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t taking off not authorized when you have an inoperative piece of equipment?
    They had a failed CDI, landed (full stop taxi back) in Santa Rosa and then departed again. I saw no placards or heard them talk about an MEL. Did I miss something?
    91.213:
    (a) Except as provided in paragraph (d) of this section, no person may take off an aircraft with inoperative instruments or equipment installed unless the following conditions are met:

    • @TheFinerPoints
      @TheFinerPoints  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tyler, you are totally correct. This was a unique situation, however, because the "failed" equipment worked when connected to GPS. Here was my thinking on that -- It wasn't required equipment by any "kinds of operations list" or 91.205, or any other AD. However, we couldn't (it wouldn't have made sense to) placard the number one CDI because it worked when tethered to the GPS and we used it to get home. Further, if you look back on the video the number one NAV radio started working (ish) again right when I was making the call to NORCAL. Although I continued to make the report call (in part for Paul's ... and other folks' education ... ) we could have just as easily said the equipment was working intermittently. I just wouldn't trust it in IMC when tethered to the NAV radio. We squawked it for the mechanics to check out upon our return. Good eye! Thanks for catching that and bringing it up.

None of them ever go fly as it remains a someday pipedream. My plane started with the same steam gauges shown in this video and slowly upgraded to how i feel comfortable now.
