      Me too - last model train set I had was a clockwork metal set for my birthday over 60 years ago. Always drop into Train Shows when I can and am now completely obsessed by these videos. Ill health means no chance of having my own set again but content as good as this keeps me very interested.

      Glad you're enjoying it! I try to keep it fresh and light and I put these videos out there so people can get inspired to do similar things - this is one of the greatest aspects of the hobby - how everyone shares their knowledge and skills on social media.

    I just saw you here...oh man ..I just love what you have done...you are far beyond what I could ever do...i just love it...I can watch it and believe it's real...
    Don't finish too early..
    Biggest fun is in the building it...
    Damn why do we love trains so much...

      Don't sell yourself short - modeling is an art like any other, it takes practice and a lot of trial and error. You only see the good stuff - you're missing most of my screw ups! I'm certain this layout will take a lifetime to truly "finish". it always needs updated and new products come out and scenes get reworked.

    24:36 thank you for the great videos. I am another retired guy in Australia who is almost totally blind. I am on my third layout and probably the final one. Listening to videos such as yours, the detail, the background, the humour and enthusiasm is truly enjoyable.I learn heaps from you and others and my layout is around 6.5’ by 2.5’ with a mainline outer track, an inner track connecting a range of sidings and a refuge loop at the back. I recently deconstructed layout 2 due to technical errors on my part, but now focussing on detail, proper measurements and enjoyment. Thanks again.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! It is getting better for us N scale folks on the market selection - but still it seems if you're not modeling pre-1960's, it's hard to find stuff that's not 3D printed. It's the industry revolution, i think.

I’m big fan of the Southern and Norfolk & Western . That’s what my layout is based on. I finally have trains running. Still have some track problems in spots just a little uneven. There seems to be a "story" to your layout which makes it so interesting. The amazing detail fills out the story. I'm retired and traveling full-time in my restored 1971 Airstream trailer. But, we also have Wheeling and Lake Erie, Allegheny Valley RR, Buffalo and Pittsburgh, and the Union RR - so we're not short on options! Most of the heavy equipment is hibernating for the next several months here, but come April - it'll look like my layout :)

    I like the designation "task oriented" I have a similar layout with a continuous loop, but even down to the wiring it is designed as a single long 2 track main, and two single track wilderness sections in the end loops.
    Trains running the loop represent through freight, while I performs tasks around the layout in different areas including a coal yard, 4 track fiddle yard, a couple industrial spurs with 1-3 customers each, a few businesses / manufacturers just off the main, and several interchange tracks.
    I think this combines the best of both worlds, and adds a level of realism wherein switching / local tasks have to be cognizant of oncoming hot traffic, and not fouling the main.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! I run the layout the same way. I usually have Amtrak as my 'run-through' while I work the various industries. I can now run up to five independent trains, but realistically three is about the max i attempt to keep it reasonably manageable, two mainlines on the loop and the third either a local or a switch that i have to fit in between the running mainlines. It is the best of both worlds.

  • @CONTAINERMAN68
    @CONTAINERMAN68 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm loving the big port intermodal yard and the container ship! One of these years, I'll be building my HO Scale Intermodal Port and a separate intermodal yard! I have a huge truck fleet to display, so I'll be using them to move containers from the yard to the port. I'm also attempting to build a smaller container ship, full hull, so I can display my container fleet, too. Hopefully, the 30 feet of floor space will do justice to my yard and 12 feet of floor space for the port and ship. Although, I had seen someone had built an HO scale container ship. It was 15.5 feet long! I think about 2 feet wide and 2-2.5 feet tall (pilot house).
    I think you should build a steel mill or a scrap yard where they smash everything down to those small bales to haul to a smelter plant for energy?
    I also have N scale and have been thinking about building a Mushroom style layout for it. I love the desert scene and winter scenes. Have the N scale run on a continuous loop from desert to the high country winter scene back down to the desert scene.
    Are you the guy that lives between the two NS railroad tracks?

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A steel processing plant like you mentioned is kind of what i have in mind for my empty industry space. i'm doing a little research to see what kits and space i'd need. Would give me my scrap traffic i want. i know my intermodal yard is selectively compressed, but those places are just so large there's not much i could do. I actually can't wait to start detailing mine - i love the ocean and being able to bring trains to it is perfect. The n scale layout sounds awesome - i like the idea; setting it up for a nice west-coast line you could have UP, BN, BNSF - really a lot of options plus the ability to make some awesome scenery between the desert and the mountains. I'd love to see you take that on.

    Like the T-Rex and the equipment - oh and great layout. I am building a 30x12 layout with double main lines and dogbone loops and the wiring is driving me crazy. Every how-to video I watch contradicts the last one. Questions - you mentioned in passing your power supply bus - Single bus/what AWG? How many feet of track are you powering? How far apart do you have feeders? Did you wire in sub busses or short-circuit protection? Thanks for the help/response.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  ปีที่แล้ว

      my bus is a 14 awg speaker wire i picked up from Home Depot. There's two wires insulated together so you have your two rails and they come in about 50' lengths. i have two lengths running the layout. Because my layout started out as a DC block layout, I made A LOT of connections i would say on average, my connections are plus or minus 6'. that's a lot further apart then most people recommend but with the Unitrack, I don't have any issues or signal loss. there are no subbusses and right now i have the layout broken into two power districts - but no additional circuit protection. as i'm running longer trains and more trains in a passive "AI" mode, i'm finding that smaller power districts is becoming important so i see additional circuit protection blocks in the future.

    Very nice layout. Do you feel that N Scale gives up anything in realism to HO? Does it give up anything else compared to HO?

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer N to HO for a couple reasons - 1) space - the size difference offers a lot of opportunity for "giant' scenery in a small space meaning you can either fit more in the space you have, or make a small space work. 2) with the smaller scale, minor missing details aren't noticeable as much. When something is missing on HO, it's very obvious. N scale equipment has come such a long way, however, there's oodles of details which have almost made the equipment impossible to handle without damaging. I've thought of doing a small switching or traction layout in HO, but i wouldn't ever switch scales. With technology constantly improving, N scale equipment has only been getting better and with the advent of 3D printing - n scale is really unstoppable because anything you can't find manufactured, you can print yourself.

    Love your layout, I have similar ideas for mine, including a mine you can see into underground. I also noticed we have the same sense of humour. I plan on adding a number of things that are "non-prototypical" including aliens and sasquatch among other thing for instance a hooker aka ex wife 😂

      @@AlleghenyNorthern thanks brother! I'm going to try and build ii so some scenes can be removable like the alien one for instance. It's just a matter of hiding the seam and have something on that scene that is well attached that you can use to just pull that "block" out. I was a demolition derby driver, figure-eight driver, and an automotive stuntman I used to roll cars. So inside the "bullpen" I can change the scene from demolition to figure eight to roll over, to monster trucks. There were big cement blocks all the way around so two of them would become "handles" to lift out that scene and drop in another one.

      @@AlleghenyNorthern any problems with the #4s?

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tonyromano6220 the #4s are complicated because they're so short you need to have sufficient straight track in front of them so the wheels of your locos and cars have time to straighten out. otherwise, they come in favoring one rail or the other and they'll 50% of the time pick the switch. you also have to be really careful during scenery because there's lots of places glue can get that's not good. but if you're careful and plan appropriately - the #4s are ok.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's many products. Woodland Scenics Soft Flake Snow makes up the base over Flex Paste. But there's also Deluxe Materials Snow, Shoveled Snow, and AK Interactive's Snow, Ice Sparkles, Snow Sparkles, and Micro Balloons. I have a video series on how I used all of them.

    Who made the road railers and spine cars?

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  ปีที่แล้ว

      the RoadRailers are Deluxe Innovation. They're no longer in business and you'll need to find them at train shows or eBay. a 10-car set is going to go for about $200-250 dollars in perfect condition. the spine cars are a more recent run, but they're from BLMA which was bought by Atlas. Atlas has not yet re-released the cars. The 5-car sets which i have are around $110 now, the 3-car sets are a few dollars less. Good luck hunting!

    Hi. I found your you tube link this morning and was enjoying the tour of the layout until it got to the dinosaurs. Sorry, but that blew it for me and turned the model railroad into a toy train set, which is a pity as it was looking good. I can appreciate subtle humour like your “Girls Girls”, but totally unrealistic things turn me off. However, it is your layout so enjoy what you are doing but I won’t be back.
