Back in 2008-2015 i used to climb these towers to fit pirate radio equipment. Was great fun! Done most of the eseex ones!
Now THAT sounds cool!
@@MrTommy001 offcom didn't think so. Nor did the police helicopter 🚁 😳 🤣
We had master keys to the top of the flats and we'd put the link transmitter in the lift shaft. Great times. Climbed a few towers doing urbex. It was DTI when I was younger.
Andy love the videos and tunes.. could you do a 'Quansheng for dummies '. Video please?
Bought one of tge for myself..do t know where to start...!!!
Great channel and content Andy, after a break of 35yrs ish(80’s) I’m just getting back into CB(mag mount ordered!)😉 Cheers!

Those Kenwood TH F6/7 are the greatest. I use mine more than any other radio I own. I bought a spare and put it away when they discontinued them.
OMG, your music Andy... amazing!
Thank you 👍🏼😁
Are you sure, Andy? Cambridge Repeater Group use the old PYE mast down the road, I haven't heard that they were putting anything on the old RAF Barkway mast
I think I made a mistake yes, it is the other tower 🤦🏻♂️. You get the idea though I suppose 😅
@@andykirby no probs I'm down at my dad's today at Great Offley and can see both masts from my old bedroom window! I'm on Ref 01C if you are about
Hi Andy , do you have video showing what modifications you've made to this radio ? 🙏
another great videoi Andy picked up the UVK5 and loving the new firmway
That's a great repeater , thx for the upload Andy
Excellent Andy well.put together video showing the transmitter site in the background as you focused om the Quansheng . I have a few of these radios. More recently i bought the Tytera 9800 which in export mode gives 6m , 11m , 10m 2m 70cm anf pmr 446 all in the one box . Cracking little rig it would be good to see yoi doing a video of it tbh mate as youve got a knack for explaining things.
Cheers Again for sharing
Thanks mate 👍🏼👍🏼
Nice music bro, composed by you? it certainly makes me fly. thanks
Hi Andy. Mine is coming next week. Should I do the firmware update right away?
I ordered the UV-K6 and I'm going to do the fw update when I get it.
I'm a newbie so although I downloaded the firmware already I'm going to play about with it standard for a couple of week so that I can appreciate the improvements that the firmware update offers.
Hi. How do we download firmware in radio? I will get my radio on the 24th. Thanks. @@noncompliance4100
i bought a radio a while ago, as time goes by i feel there is more need to learn about radio , incase there is ever a blackout of internet & communications. just a nice bit of kit for my bugout bag
great content Andy.
one question, why did you use a 40 db attenuator when connecting the TinySA Ultra to the radio?
I thought it would be a controlled level output on the TinySA.
Maybe in case he transmitted.
Because the receive limit on a radio is far lower than the usual range of a signal generator. 10,000 times less in this case.
What model Kenwood is that?
Got one arriving this week hopefully £13.15p delivered 😊
Hey Andy.. I’ve been enjoying watching your videos on these small radios..
What is you recommendations for someone looking for a scanner and aerial and spec analysis?
Those radios made from chinesium have terrible front ends. They are easily deafened by strong out of band signals. So, test sensitivity again, but generate another signal out of band that is strong and try again. You will find it to be terrible. Modulated morse on 1.2 GHz.??!! What is that for? Is that just the repeater IDing itself? Or is that a transmission of some kind?
Andy, one thing, am I correct in saying , the new updated Radio is best avoided for mod reasons ? Get the MK1?/
Where do you get the Y shaped antenna from? 'never seen one like that before?
Nice video! My Quansheng UV K5 (8) should be arriving any day soon, and looking forward to modding this thing.
Psytrance fan Andy...? Nice tune for the soundtrack... ;)
CB - I thought in the UK you were still on 27mhz??
Can you please give us a diy antenna tutorial? Also..whats on the 934mhz? 😳🫣
SSB is working on that little radio. Programme it in
Very cool
Ordered my two radios a week ago can not wait to tinker with them
How do you get firmware for it
So close to being a Geiger Counter.
Not a CB radio.
CB in your country may be on that frequency. Not in the rest of the world.
It's just for sensalationism don't worry about it.
@@andykirby Is "sensalationism" the new clickbait?
That is Morse code. Presumably a repeater call sign d.
It isn't a "CB", mate!
Any idea what that Morse was saying?
The keyword CB in the title hits the algorithm, that's why it's there 👍🏼 morse is the ident for GB3PS
@@andykirbySo, clickbait then.
Yeah unfortunately nobody see the videos if we don't and professional youtubers need to get paid...
Sick Music. Why????
What is that antenna?
It's a 1.3Ghz dipole meant for FPV model aircraft.
Do you often do research for terrorists?
Hi Andy, a complete novice here, we bought 2 quanshengs, how far could we transmit & talk to each other with them ? Fantastic TH-cam content we have been watching for around 2 years 👍🧡
From hill to hill maybe 50miles. On the ground maybe as low as a mile 😁
Still weird to see driving on the wrong side of the road.
23cm ham band with slow morse id wheres that them radio are good for what they are 2 70 the firmware just opening up the sdr ... but no hardware to do anything usefull ,,, i know people going crazy about them lol dont you think china would advertise and put firmware on it if it would make them usefull for anything else as a selling point,, trying to tx on other freq just will burn out the pa,s as the filters will be wrong and mess up the swr and mmm heat could be usefull as a hand warmer lol
uniden sds200e kan die frequency an.
You know whats sensitive? CAPS LOCK!
HUH?
1297 MHz is not microwave at this time...😊 (It was...50 years ago 😊)
It's only UHF...😊
Anything above 1GHz is generally considered microwave. Your microwave oven operates at 2.5 GHz, which is still technically UHF.
@@stargazer7644
Yes.
Microwave concept evoluted through times.
It is best to use the term microwaves above 3 GHz.
Fist comercial microwave ovens were 10 GHz ( one ISM band). Then they've moved to 2.4 GHz (another ISM band).
We should call those UHF ovens.....😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@jplacido9999Umm, no, not really. I'm afraid the people who actually work with these frequencies don't much care about your opinion of what is "best".
Dictionary writers are also not in your camp. "noun: microwave
an electromagnetic wave with a wavelength in the range 0.001-0.3 m, shorter than that of a normal radio wave but longer than those of infrared radiation" In case you aren't aware, 0.3m is 1000 MHz.
From the Wiki article (with 6 references): "Microwave is a form of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths ranging from about 30 centimeters to one millimeter corresponding to frequencies between 1 GHz and 300 GHz respectively."
Microwave wavelengths have not gotten magically shorter over time. Microwaves have propagation characteristics that are significantly different than lower radio frequencies. That's why they're considered to be different, and why they're considered to be 1GHz and higher.
Seriously??
I don't understand the appeal of this hobby. The radio goes beep beep beep when far away and then beeps louder when close to the tower? You are testing the features of the radio with the end goal of listening in to people's communications? I am not following what the goal is here.
The hobby is about communicating with other HAM radio operators over radio, usually we use our voices over the air. In this video it's showing receiving a morse code signal from a tower that is used to relay voice messages. The tones are just like a beacon to let you know its there and operational... its possible to talk through this tower and it boosts your signal out further.
Horrible music
I have been having loads of fun with this radio, finally something we tinker with to create the radio we used to dream about.
You have the enthusiasm and energy of a teenager, fantastic. Can you do a video with the recent 10 Mhz firmware perhaps ?
Hi. Just a friendly suggestion: the background music is VERY annoying! Plus it is much louder than you speaking. As a result one has to constantly adjust the volume. No need for background music on your videos at all, people are here for the content.
That's your opinion. Just a friendly comment 👍🏼
The music is too high in the mix and it's annoying.
Not agreeing or disagreeing but I actually like that tune at the end ,
It's beyond annoying. I don't know why people do that other than to act like professional producers or something. It certainly adds nothing to the content.
I completely agree.
I bought the Quansheng UV-K5 PLUS for €14-, loaded the new firmware on it and it's **** great. I can even hear what they are saying on the AM airband now. Can't wait for other enhancements.
Just wait until you hook it up to a decent antenna XD It's loads of fun!
Hi we're do you buy it from

Pretty cool. I love this Quansheng UV-K5 radio mods. 👍
Hey you driving on the wrong side...lol...thanks for the work you do, I love hearing the new stuff and ideas!
Andy, curious to see the spurs on TX U.S. FM 1.2 GHz call frequency on your spectrum analyzer. Have an Diamond SMA stubby duck for 1.2 GHz - FM simplex is 1294.500. Where else is this thing transmitting when we use 1.2 GHz just for grins? Looking forward to this video when you have time. 73’ good DX.
Its a great radio for the price! Cool video and info. Thnx buddy. ;)
As you get closer to the MOD station the front end of the UVK58 will get flattened (cross mod from other very strong stations on the mast)
This Chinese radio is leaking to much harmonics when transmitting on non advertised frequencies, so be careful not to interfere
I use the IJV v3.x and in my case it's completely deaf above 900 MHz!Tried with a 1296 MHz repeater in visual range about 15 km away and I have no reception while my ic-910 with same antenna rx 9++. Good job with the video mate , glad it works for you! best 73!
If you think you know of a "sensitive location" now, just wait 'til the NSA has you tied naked face-down on a table... Oh boy do they know their way around sensitive locations...
Hi Andy, I follow you for your e-bike kits and videos but these types of videos always show in my feed. Is there a video or something that explains what these are or what they’re used for? I’m very intrigued.
There's loads of videos on the website with Steve and Andy showing off the bikes.
@@photosbycharles9880 sorry if I didn’t make sense, I meant videos about the radios explaining there uses and what they do exactly for newbies.
I'd like to know also. Like, what's the aim of the game with these radios?
Yeah not a bloody clue of 90% of what came out of your mouth...lol...or why
But still I am interested..
@@barrylarryharry7183 Well, see, radios are usually used to communicate...
it may not just be a sensitivity problem... wideband rigs can also get "desensed" in the presence of strong signals when something swamps the whole front-end & the whole thing goes deaf.... you go up to many a transmission site & many rigs chuck in the towel in their vicinity.
Interesting theory will look more into this.
Very probably. I guess there is no bandpass filters in the frontend, as in more expensive rigs. The input stage can be saturated by undesired frequencies.
A narrow band antenna like a Yagi would have helped reduce the overloading from out of band signals.
He tried it directly coupled with a signal generator though so doesn't that discount it being swamped?
@@elguapo1507 yes the sig gen alone will identify how the sensitivity drops off "out of band" under clean conditions but under swamping conditions at a transmitter site things can be much worse.
I’ve just bought one and have very little knowledge on the programming side so hopefully will be following this channel to find out how to sort it out 👍🏻
For the price the radio it´s fantastic.
Hi Andy. Dunno if it's mentioned in any other comments - is that a DF antenna on the handheld? If so, where from, please?
Where can I find some instructions how to use the latest firmware with SSB. Would like to see how to use all the extra features.
Nice video, I've also got a tinySA and it sure would be nice of you to List sourcing resources for the dummy load, Attenuator and perspective connectors that you used for that demo. Thanks!
ah my neck of the woods.
Nice 2 Meter repeater there set up by Pye engineers years ago.
Nearby is the Nuthampsted VOR beacon on 116Mhz which also sends Morse code.
right on my doorstep 👍
Andy has set the bar quite high for other HAM YT channels, by even making his own music too ! LOL
Subbed and brought one last video 🤙
I won't ever be able to send USB as the chip will only produce fm RF, but it can receive it.
The rf power amplifier is likely Class C which is good for FM but definitely not SSB where linearity is important.
hi andy. where can i get the modded fimwear please thanks
I can hear the repeater here in Chelmsford Andy on my 9700, just. G0URK
Someone really needs to make a proper mobile and base unit that is just as configurable at a good price point.
What can you actually listen to on one of these ? Planes ? Sorry totally new to these things
What is the little blue antenna you are using?
1.2-1.3 ghz dipole from Matek Systems
@@andykirby Thanks mate 😀
The one thing you don’t mention Andy is the cost of this little radio. I paid £15 for mine delivered and I have heard of others getting this same radio for a tenner!
So everything in perspective, whatever this radio does within 2m and 70cm is outrageous value - so the rest is a big bonus!
Where did you get your radio from? I tried ordering from AliExpress and it said it is not available in your country so I ordered from Banggood but it's costing £30 and is not in stock at the moment 🙁
Hello, Question what is this for Antenna?
whats the antenna you have the blue one ?
Nice review. The really impressive thing about the Quansheng, is that you can pick one up for £20 or even less. You won't get the Kenwood or the ICOM for that. So if you just want to experiment, the quansheng is a no-brainer, then upgrade to a more expensive better performing radio if you're enjoying it.
I Bought one 4 day's ago for £11 😊.
Including delivery from China
I paid £7 for mine with free 5 day shipping
I rigth no way
@@qrphfradio7753 Blimey that is cheap 😳 where was that from ?. Hopefully you have received it 🤞🤞.
I just found mine delivered in the wheely Bin, still 4 days from China including customs clearance isn't bad going.😉
whats that antenna andy?
It's actually for a 1.3ghz band FPV video camera.
What's the procedure in using the modded firmware please ? I have the modded firmware but what programming software do you use ?
What dummy load is that?
Hi - I've seen a few videos with this unit and I guess I am little confused about something.. Is this just a full range scanner, or could you actually key up within its freq. range?
Well the UV-K5 comes with TX enabled for the US ham bands and rx on 50 mhz, FM AM airband, VHF, UHF and even 470-600Mhz(RX only). But with firmware modifications you can receive from 18mhz to 1300mhz. With more modifications you can even transmit but the harmonics are not good and you transmit very low power. Also highly illegal.
Why do you keep calling these radios “CB”. They are not citizen band radios.
for the algorithm...
@@andykirby Fair enough mate.
Btw, I have custom firmware for the UV5r which i wrote myself. (Rather modified).
It opens the RX to much wider coverage and it also lets to RX (AM on the 118 to 138 band.)
The RX is between. 0Mhz and 999MHz.. BUT!!!…..
I’ve yet to test it all. I’ve tested it at 5,7,14,26-29,50,70,FM Broadcast,Airband,2m Ham band, Marine band,……. It TX’s on all those bands with my modded firmware. I’m still testing. I’ll continue to test today when I get home. I do know 430 to 459 is also covered.
The UV5r has very good firmware in regards to moding.
good radio for receiving BUT DONT TRANSIT they splatter all over the place!!!
I recognised that antenna right awayAndy, the 1300 mhz FPV one....I have one....😏😳🇬🇧 Love that track at 1:20...😏😏😏
Will the Quansheng TX on 2M with the SSB firmware or is it receive only ?
What's the point of listening to tones when you don't know what information they contain?
Morse code?
Hi Andy 1st, thanks for sharing, I'm new to this stuff and just wanted to know the adapter looks like an SO239 going between your Quansheng and your Tinysa whats it called and where can I get one?
Hey Andy, could you shed a little light on that antenna you're using? I've been researching fox-hunting recently and would like to know more.
The TinySA Ultra is an amazing piece of tool. For 40 years ago it would cost USD 100k or more. Today around 200 USD. But what is the attenuation in your attenuator?
Ah, the Clown Band, the entry point to the radio hobby. Where would all radio hobbies be without it? Just about all radio hobbyist started in the Clown Band. I learned Morse code on the Clown Band years ago.
I think you showed the wrong antenna tower. Clearly this one is military. The Ham one must be close by.
Love your content....exciting......
Will like to collaborate one day .....
I’ve the same Kenwood. Had to buy a Chinese battery for it but it’s still going strong.
You may get a knock on your door from RA or other departments!
The RA? They’ve been gone for 20 years 😂
And it's only a HAM radio repeater. Chill.😁
@@andykirby It didn't sound like to me, obviously it was ment to sound like it was something realy dodgy bordering on illegal!
maybe it was just an Advertisement for to Radio.
I have a few of these now. absolutely ridiculous value. the bigger battery uvk5 plus model was like £12 delivered!
If the radio has a setting on it that can make your filter extremely narrow, you just might be able to hear that repeater. I do a lot of my dx listening on websdr and the app I use has several filter options making it fairly easy to find stations even y skywave can’t pick up lol
What firmware are you using ??? Thanks
