In the late 1970's & early 1980's Michael Ray Richardson was the most touted young player in the NBA.
The No. 4 overall pick in the 1978 NBA draft, Richardson played in the NBA for eight years with the New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors and New Jersey Nets. In his first 6 seasons, He was a four-time NBA All-Star, and led the league in steals in three seasons. Affectionately called "Sugar" for his "sweet game," he finished his playing days where his career had a renaissance in the Italian basketball league. Later became a head coach in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada).
Despite all his remarkable achievements, "Sugar" is most remembered today for being the 1 player to be banned for life from the NBA by then commissioner David Stern for breaking the leagues drug policy.

Great back & forth comedy & for real info.Sugar was traded from NY to GS for Bernard King who for a 4-5 yr time frame could score as well as Jordan.Sugar as a Net was instrumental in help knocking off the World Champion Sixers in one of the biggest upsets in NBA playoff history. Sugar in the final game hit a key shoot sitting on his butt near the foul line as the 24 sec clock was winding down!I have great respect for Sugar overcoming a horrible drug addiction & stuttering problem.Europe loved Sugar & great to hear how succcessful he was over there. He was hard nosed & could beat you so many ways.Great interview & channel Coop.I love guys like Coop & Sugar who came from small schools & thru grit made a name for themselves in the NBA.Mr. Big Shot & Sugar are 2 of the greatest players to come out of Denver.Stern ban Sugar from the NBA for life & Sugar still speaks so highly of Stern.Tells you what kind of man Sugar is for manning up to his issues & not showing bitterness. I love Sugar Ray Richardson. One of my all time fav Knick players.

An excellent interview. Michael Ray was a legitimate super star for a short period of time. In his prime he could play with anyone. He gave the best NBA players all that they wanted and more. He had a helluva all around game with an uncanny ability to get to the rim or create his own shot at will. At his best, he was similar to Jordan in scoring ability but a much better player at controlling the offense and setting up teammates. This guy was an electric handful.

MRR had the quickest first step I have ever seen. I remember him his Senior year at Montana. They played Portland State with Freeman Williams. Freeman led the nation in scoring with 30 something points a game. MRR held him to 6 points while scoring high 30s himself. He was quoted as saying that there were very few players who could play both offense and defense like MMR could. He said that it was lucky that He himself had been sick with flu or he would have held Freeman to zero. He bragged Freeman up in this interview and didn’t discuss his shut down of him. He was confident and honest.
When Jud Heathcote went to Michigan State from Montana, MRR wanted to go with him. Jud said no and MRR cried and said he was like father to him. Could you have imagined MRR and Magic on the same team? If not for drugs, he would be remembered as an all time great. After a game against the Celtics, Bird in an interview, called MRR the best player on the planet.

My cousin Matt Rideout plays with your son and I recently saw some footage of your son and yeah I gave you a like and I'm subscribed to the channel. Iam: so jealous. I love these guys, I told my lady the other day when we were, talking about grate basketball players. All she could say was. Michael Jordan. I said to her are you kidding. there a lot of great players, like sugar Ray Richardson. She said who? So I should her a video. And now she knows. Ps. I played back in the day , on the street courts in our home town maywood with Doc , Rivers at Winfield Scott, something like The ruckers Park in New York Harlem. I wish they could make a movie of all the, street basketball courts back in the day in different cities. A lot of great players who never made the NBA or colleges. But could really play basketball and. some of those guys, coach basketball today and give back to there community like we do. Like sugar said. with all lace up our shoes and play. Thank you. Coop au! loop . For making this video. about sugarl 🏀
