"The Cocaine Starting Five" is a legendary video title.
The best one yet
Dude , this was put together phenomenally. Simple but just packed with NBA history
Thank you buddy 🙏🏾 wanted to tell 5 stories in 1
Yeah click-baity title but I get it. Video itself was well put-together and didn't have any sheanigans.
Check out Marvin Barnes if you dont know about him... Averaged 25 and 15 as a rookie before it derailed his career. Some crazy stories
Damn missed him 😑
@@rotiluvshoops I wouldn't say he'd make the starting 5 anyway. He'd come off the bench arriving late for the game due to being stuck in the snow ❄
Marvin was a Beast it’s something about tall Men And Cocaine
I remember Barnes very well. Played at Providence College. Had loads of skill but sniffed it all away.
Matt Barnes dad , he was the truth
You missed the nba tragedy of 1986 #1 draft pick "Len Bias" who overdosed on cocaine the night he was drafted by the boston celtics and died.
I wanted to put him in but he actually never played- a 6th man potentially
He didn't miss him. Len never even played an NBA game
@@rotiluvshoopshe was considered to Jordan. Not a sixth man. Would be a starter. Good video though
@@lukesmith9692 he meant 6th person to include in video..
@@lukesmith9692the amount of people compared to jordan and failed the hype. Andrew wiggins was also compared to jordan. Just because bias was an interesting prospect doesn't override the players who had an actual career
I live a little outside of Greensboro and David Thompson came and spoke to my high school about this stuff and the amount of people that knew who he was in 2013 shows how great he was. He could touch the top of the backboard at nc state.
I think he was really the first power dunker.
I’m in Kernersville. Good area
@@yankees29Not The First "Power Dunker". George McGinnis Was Shattering Backboards Before Darryl Dawkins. David "Skywalker" Thompson Was Possibly The First Wreckless Abandon Dunker...HE DIDN'T GIVE A FUCK!!
@@55cleon I actually patted Dawkins on the back once at a Knicks-Pistons game in the 80’s. Back then if you greased the usher’s palm you could walk right down to the bench. So no one else turned around when my dad said something except Daryl. He was soooo friendly. He said hello and my dad said “why don’t you go and break that backboard tonight.” He was laughing and my dad gave him a pat on the back. Really nice guy. You just reminded me of that!
The "alley-oop" was named for David Thompson
This happened to a lot of pro athletes in NYC, during that 70s/80s party scene. You had Daryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Lawrence Taylor, so this extended well past the NBA in NYC. There’s quite of a few other guys I’m missing, who are from NYC but played elsewhere like Lamar Odom. Spencer Haywood got caught up in that Studio 54 coke lifestyle when he played with the Knicks. He was the highest paid player in the NBA at one point and was married to supermodel Iman.
All those cokehead dudes should have been traded to the Utah Jazz. Back then, the coke trade was probably nonexistent in that city. Then again they travel from city to city and will just buy extra to keep on hand back home.
This is so insightful, thank you 🙏🏾
Don't forget Dennis Oil Can Boyd who pitched for Boston Redsox
broski if coke reaches japan, greenland, kenya, and fuckin corners of siberia you best believe that in utah there is a unholy amount of coke passing thru daily
true rockstars
Conor McGregor does more coke than all of these dudes put together!
Roti man you’re quickly becoming one of my fave Balltubers, love the topics you choose to discuss and the way you discuss them too. Thanks to you I’ve also become more interested in the BBL and will be seeing the Lions and the women’s team at the copper box live in February, my first live ball game ever!

Good video. Keep up the good work! 👍🏾
Roy Tarpley belongs in there too....great video
Thank you 🙏🏾
When I think of cocaine in the NBA, I think about David Thompson. Very cool vid.
Great video, you earned a new sub from me! I went into this video expecting it to be silly, but I was pleasantly surprised by how understanding you were discussing the topic. I've never thought about all the careers that were destroyed due to cocaine usage, especially during the 70s and 80s. It's sad to see, and I appreciate you shedding light on the topic
Thank you my guy - lucky the league had magic and bird
Nice video bruv. Good to have a serious UK hoop tube ♥️🍻
Cheers fella
Bernard and his family is from Garland, Texas . I grew up with those dudes being at the rec center helping kids like myself with our game. Dont care what things he had in his past. Dude was always standup to everyone he came in contact with
wow i feel old , this video brought me back to my childhood , great video ,so many great players were banned and now pretty much forgotten , until you remind us how drugs ruin athletes
Yo i like the videos alot and i just subscribed. The presentability of the video really makes it for me, the editing is nice and smooth, and you look clean and prepared. Great job overall
Thanks for the sub!
2:39 the tone switch got me dead 😂
Great piece, ive had experience with both at high levels lol and great cautionary insights. Loved the video

Excellent job my guy. Salute to you!
This video reminds me of a Steely Dan tune... "Glamour Profession"
"6:05 p.m., outside the stadium

Looking good, he's a crowd-pleasing man

We'll make some calls from my car
We're a star (it's a glamour profession)

@@rotiluvshoops no problem dude
Great video man keep up the good work
Thank you
As a guy always looking for good basketball content this was well researched..Great job👍
Thank you buddy
Well done brother! Some don't know Micheal "Sugar" Ray Richardson but I rememeber him well. He was Magic before Magic that's how good he was. And tbh, majority of the NBA was using coke in the 80s until they decided to clean the league up.
Yeah it’s so true it was common back then
That dude could have been one of the best point guards to play the game
He was a 6’9” point guard with genius IQ and otherworldly vision who won everywhere he went?
And played no defense?
@@anonymouslakernerd7214 Bruh, did I say he was Magic's clone? I said he played like Magic before Magic came to the league. Magic even said so: “Micheal Ray was a guy who played just like I played" (google it). He was also a four-time NBA All-Star who led the league in steals three times. Maybe a little research next time so you know what you're talking about?
Great video - I feel they’re already pushing themselves physically to the limits, sometimes the mental just can’t keep up. I also imagine it’s similar to popular musicians performing on tour or at a massive concert - there’s pressure to be near perfect every night, at the same time the experience is such a high that the lows feel really low.
I think its chasing the highs and having so much money, popularity and freedom. Plus they had that really good stuff in the 70s and 80s from the likes of Escobar and those types
You're saying today is only the homemade NAZI stuff ?
Yea that's a great example. Many of the musicians that have played in bands for people for a while seem to get to the point that the "mistakes" just don't matter that much. Unless you're just playing the complete wrong notes from everyone else, 99.9% of the audience will never notice if you mess up one or two notes. Or have a bum note that doesn't ring out completely.
So, you just keep on playing like you never missed a beat. Or for guitar players, that seems to be a popular sentiment, anyway. I can't imagine it being much different for other instruments. Because it's when you harp on that screw up that you fall behind and screw up again. And again. And again. So, you just, don't even worry about it and keep on keeping on. 👍
This was a very good video. You definitely have that "it" factor that very few channel ops have. . Keep up the amazing work. Maybe add some music to your videos and up the production quality a little, and the sky's the limit for you.
Smashing video mate, subbed!
Cheers buddy
Great video. I hope your channel blows up!
You and me both!
Keep this up bro, this video was fire 🔥
Thank you 🙏🏾
Great video, Roti. I too wonder what would've happened if they didn't use cocaine - if we got to see their full potential. You're absolutely right that what happens off the court - and mental health in general - is very important. There is a lot of stigma on mental health. Plus, as you indicated, pro athletes face a lot of pressure and scrutiny. It definitely can take a heavy toll - just as it did with each of the athletes you mentioned.
Great work. Have a nice week, Roti.
Thank you my Guy 🙏🏾 you too have a great week - why do you think we haven’t really heard any scandals in the current time, what do you think has changed?
@@rotiluvshoops Thank you, Roti! Excellent question. I'm not sure. There are still some who do have significant off-court troubles as well as a few who were suspended from the league for drug use (like Tyreke Evans was for a couple seasons). Nonetheless, one factor may be a bit less stigma around mental health (there is still a lot, but there seems to be at least somewhat of a shift towards reducing the stigma). Other than that, I'm honestly not sure. If there has been someone who has studied this, I'd like to hear their findings.
@@rotiluvshoopsyou did mention Kardashian ? Was that 20 yrs ago ? Is that recent ? Environment, Opportunity ?: Maybe T-times changed ?
Good video bro surprised when I saw the low sub count keep grinding
Thanks, will do!
Very interesting Point of View. first time watching your content . Michael Ray Richardson Game was Sweet he could play in this modern NBA and hold his Own.
Easily - he was a 6”5 lockdown
Roy Tarpley could have been the center on that 5 as well. Tarpley was exiled from the league as a result of the 3 strikes rule, soon after Michael Ray Richardson.
Damn I have just had a look at the guy - he had decent stats and everything
great content, never seen video like this, good luck and keep it up bro ☝️☝️
Thanks, will do!
Sad when David Thompson talked about how he got pushed down a stairwell (of course he was wasted) coming out of Studio 54 which basically ruined his career. No more sky high jumping. His knee was f'd up.
To be fair about 80-90% of people relapse after rehab for any substance, and of those almost 100% will lie when they get a call asking if they've stayed sober since getting out of rehab 😂
Damn 🤣🤣 cocaine is really one hell of a drug
Im STUNNED...
When people call the selling of stuff like this:
"VICTIMLESS CRIME" or "NONVIOLENT OFFENSE"
As the human toll and downstream suffering is beyond words....
Enjoying these videos 👍👌

Shannon Sharpe: "The Wizzinator?!" Sad stories but I laughed there.
I hope this dudes channel blows up, great content
Lol. Blow
Thanks man 🙏🏾
I suspect his nickname was sugar because his middle name was Ray like sugar Ray Robinson and sugar Ray Leonard
I would think so too - it’s very fitting though
Bernard Kings career wasnt ended by his knee injury he went and averaged over 20 ppg 3 out of his four seasons in washington. Its just he never got to play a full season with Ewing before he got released by the Knicks. Its one of those what if's knicks fans talk about. Also he is still regarded as one of the greatest and most versatile scorers in NBA history dont think drugs hurt his reputation at all.
And he got into the pro basketball Hall of Fame
Excellent vid so interesting
nice work, you did your research 👏
Yo the name of this list is wild, but great content!
Thank you buddy 🙏🏾
very nice video my guy, very honest and not promoting or condoning it, but also not damning them for the way their lives went
Thank you!
There was another star outta college whose heart exploded on the court before he could even start his career ….. cocaine overdose
Great video! I always think of Len Bias and completely missed potential from a short run in with cocaine.
Such a sad story maybe I'll mention it in a bonus episode
Excellent video
Mate, you misspelled Bernard's name ("Benard"). Apart from that, great video.
It can become a series with more players and more vices 😂
Don’t ever get mixed up with a single hard drug. If you are going to be an addict, you have to be a poly user. You can’t just be a heroin or cocaine addict and expect to stay out of the hospital, morgue, or prison for any extended amount of time.
No hard drugs for anything over 72hrs straight is risky. Physical addiction completely changes you, inside and out. Not for the better, either.
THC is the only drug you can use daily and not have it impact your life very negatively.
Why don't you think THC can affect you negatively when so many say it has? especially many stating it affects their serotonin levels
KING BERNARD 👑.
Should have put down the snow 🫣
@@rotiluvshoopskid Bernard King came back and was an All-Star with the nets back in 91 and he went toe-to-toe with Dr j more than once he went toe-to-toe with Jordan many times also and outscored him and I am a Jordan fan
I was told that the use of cocain can make someone stronger, faster, can give you more endurance and durability, focus.
Think about it💯
Hmmm you might be on to something 👀 PED
Atec runners
If you insufflate it, it definitely causes congestion and can make it hard to breathe and your heart will be racing, that depends on some other variables. I’ve had it go both ways, first time I ever did it, I went straight to the gym and it was like I had the freshest legs I’d ever had, I was dunking off vertical, could palm the ball with such ease it felt like I had so much better control and could see things on the court. Other times I was just winded and couldn’t keep up, felt like I was gonna die. I’d say the day after a coke binge makes you also feel light even if you’ve been drinking so running and jumping seems like you can go all day. Just wake up and drink a coffee, no food. I think mixing it with weed made it hard to breathe maybe tbh..
@@greg9069 wow thanks for your insight....
Roy Tarpley 4/5, Garfield Heard-4, Bernard King, John Drew, Richard Dumas, Marques Johnson-3, Walter Davis-2, Michael Ray Richardson, John Lucas-1

Thank you! Cocaine can get anyone.
Great video bro. Crucial information lol
Glad you enjoyed it
Really good video.
Another good story is the I think 70s Steelers and cowboys rivalry! Check them out. A couple of old buddies of mine always talked about that era and mentioned all those guys were coked out. Little cocaine stashed in their uniform pants and you could see the product lol
GREAT TITLE Lil bro 😂👍🏾

I remember when he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. Soon after arriving he was never the same 💯 i was actually excited to have him on my Favorite team. His play was Disappointing. I get it he didnt want to leave L.A depart from kobe, Pau n the rest of the organization. Good video!

As a lifelong Trail Blazers fan, I sure hope you have a bench position lined up for Billy Ray Bates.
Also- no Roy Tarpley?
Who was he and how good was he ?
Wow - Roy Tarpley! Good one! He was a center for the Mavericks if I remember correctly....
@@rotiluvshoops Billy Ray Bates was an up and coming guard for Portland from 1980 to 1983. He became something of a local hero because dude could dunk like crazy and drop a ton of points on opponents in few minutes. Guy still has the team record for PPG in the playoffs.
But alcoholism and cocaine ended his career in the NBA early. He would become a legendary player in the Philippines however
@@johnr.7906 and yeah, Tarpley was the Mavs center. Would have been a great one too.

Great list. Myself I would have put Haywood at the 4 and Roy Tarplley at the 5 and included Lynn Bias instead of Odum. Now if you have King or Bias it won't matter who plays the the 3 and who plays the 4

Len Bias died from an overdose after being drafted by Boston. Definitely deserves a mention.

Dwight Powder, Coby WHITE, Derrick Nose, Blow Williams, Eric Snow
I love this twist on the names
Back in 70’s and 80’s if you were good athlete you got so many passes with no consequences and by the time they get to pros they thought they were untouchable
For all sports, you’d have to go LT, Darryl Strawberry, Doc Gooden, Michael Irvin and Keith Hernandez
One, (Michael Ray Richardson) went to my highschool, another (David Thompson) was the best player my NBA team had ever seen at that point. There was a lot of cocaine in Denver in the late '70s & '80s appearantly. Go Thunderbolts Ⓜ️⚡✊
It was apparently very common in the nba
there's a ton of cocaine in denver nowadays too lol
@@kleberpauta8209 I'm proud to live within walking distance from the capital and had no idea. Take care y'all.
(not doubting that you are right) 👍 ✌️
@ Matt Reynolds growing up in Colorado I remember both of them well. Richardson was the best high school player to come out of Colorado. Richardson and Chauncey Billups were both great. Who could forget Skywalker Thompson. I drove 3 hours to Denver on many occasions to watch him play on weeknights no less when I had to get up early for work. Too bad they both turned out to be underachievers. Drugs were their downfall as they were the downfall for some people I knew during the late 70s at early 80s.
@@Greg-mh5zn I also went to highschool with Chucky Sproiling & witnessed him set the state scoring record with 74 in a 32 minute game. 8 minute qrts. He went to St. Johns, & never saw the NBA. But he was incredible.
Cocaine is not addictive, I know a guy who's quit it hundreds of times. You totally nailed this. Thank-you for remembering Michael Ray, a true legend. Thompson was the greatest college player I ever saw.
?
If it’s not addictive, why would he have to quit it hundreds of times instead of just once?
Michael Ray “Booger Sugar” Richardson 😂 I remember a bigtime crack dealer in an urban mag article said Michael Ray traded him a diamond ring for crack, which he’d wear around. Guys back then weren’t making millions. $1M a year was a major contract back in the early 80s.
Why do you think much of this is hush hushed today?
Awesome video, I think the best news about this video is that all five of these men are still alive by the grace of god.
Yes facts they were saved
“His nickname was sugar” 🤣🤣
It literally was... popular nickname back then like the boxer Sugar Ray Leonard who came after Sugar Ray Robinson
Booger Sugar
