    I've seen this on some other 63v series 9.9/15s. Not sure the exact cause but the motor was running rich. Tried 3 different good carbs and still rich. I dropped the main jet size to a 98 (676-14943-26-00 Yamaha or 3B2032510 Tohatsu) and it ran good and the plugs looked good. Worth a shot maybe.

    I had the EXACT same problem with my 15hp Mariner. One shop couldn't figure it out, the other shop said the butterfly valve was just not opening 100%. They made it to where the valve was opening completely, and voila! Fixed it. I guess the throttle cable was slipped a little.

    It’s one of three things, 1) fuel, 2)air, 3)spark. So far the spark is good, check the fuel, and then check the air. Let me add, Yamaha has a great additive call “Ring Free” I use this in my Yamaha 15 hp and the tops of the pistons are mirror finish. I would highly suggest using this

    My thoughts are that it’s getting water into the combination chamber possibly from the exhaust baffle. How I have found that before is run it at WOT and hit the stop button and pull the spark plugs and look for water droplets.

    • @fleetwin1
      @fleetwin1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm liking this idea, but would think it would seize up after using and sitting. But who knows, surely easy enough to check plugs for water...

      @chrysleroutboarddude 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kodibassInsideoutboards Well that’s interesting. I guess my next step would be to see if the timing is going out of wack, What I found interesting is that in the video you can hear that it is on both cylinders off idle and when you give it throttle it goes bad, I think I would make a mark on the flywheel and check with a timing light to see if it is advancing correctly or if it goes retarded, I am more of an OMC guy but I have seen OMC powerpacks do weird things with timing before.

    I put a 25HP 1969 Evinrude on a heavy 13FT clone like your whaler years ago and it wasnt water soaked and it barely planed with two people. If your boat is water soaked thats a good reason. You could of tied the boat realtight before leaving at the dock and did a full throttle check to see if it ran like in your tank or even better not moving to confirm .Anyway another possibility is severe carbon blockage in the upper exhaust exit area. Friend of mine had a 1970S 25HP Evinrude that just one finger would fit thru the upper block exhaust port area and the motor had no power too until he cleaned the blockage of carbon out .Hope this might help ....GP

    Hey Kodi that one is a pita.
    Remove the gearbox, and check the exhaust. Sometimes people use to much oil on the mix or not the right oil, and the exhaust gets clogged with carbon. Instead of a 2 inch exhaust, it gets clogged and its turns to leda than a inch diâmetro exhaust. Happen to me a few Times, specially on engines that work a lot on idle.

  • @28cruzin
    @28cruzin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know if you checked the throttle plate position at WOT. When you were reving the motor in the tank it looked like the throttle was not opening all the way. On the boat the motor sounded overloaded to me like too much pitch on the prop. It doesn't sound like it was starving for fuel either. Check that wide open throttle and check the carb silencer for dibris or mouse nest maybe. Have you been inside the carburetor? Gonna be watching for the solution. Dave

    You've got a real head scratcher there. Did you try it with the hood (bonnet) off when at sea? Could it be sucking its own exhaust gas somehow?

  • @roderickmarkcox6036
    @roderickmarkcox6036 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kodi, you need to call the owner and have him describe what happened. If he was running at WOT and all was well, then it bogged down ("his words?") then I believe it's a fuel delivery issue in the carb linkage. On your test runs the motor never made that WOT sound. Don't
    know a thing about "Yammies" just my 2 cents worth. I agree with a previous comment.
    Carb isn't opening up 100%

    My not so educated sggestions would be to test performance using the same fuel line in the tank and on the boat, then swirch the fuel pump, make sure the motorhead's exhaust passages are clear and check the reeds for fatigue. Maybe look for Yamaha service bulletins ?

    It may be drawing air on the carb gasket?

  • @fleetwin1
    @fleetwin1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmmm. Not a Yamaha guy, but compression and spark seem OK...The inline tester seemed like it was indicating a miss, but there was no audible signs of an ignition miss...So, just the testers I guess. Engine seemed to perform identically when run on either cylinder by itself. Again, not a Yammy guy, so will ask you if the engine appeared to idle normally at idle speed settings, kind of seemed like it did. I was thinking exhaust blockage also, but you seem to have eliminated that possibility. Running the engine in the tank with no load/no prop can be deceiving, so I won't conclude much from that test. I like Phillip's idea about ignition timing, but it appeared as though the timer base was moving freely.... Perhaps the flywheel key is sheared, but then I would have thought the engine wouldn't idle worth a damn.... Perhaps there is a rag/junk caught in the air box, causing what seems like rich running at WOT. Don't know anything about Yammy carbs, but perhaps it is too rich somehow at high speeds. Kinda like a missing nozzle gasket on a little OMC carb. I would say perhaps the fuel pump is flooding a cylinder, but that doesn't seem to follow the running characteristics of the engine. This thing has a choke, no primer, correct? If it had a primer, I might suspect a primer issue causing rich running. I suppose the choke linkage could be messed up keeping the choke from opening fully, but that seems like another long shot. Is the carb butterfly opening all the way, perhaps the sync linkage is messed up. Maybe you could try running the engine in the tank with the prop, then pulling the fuel line to see if it cleans up as fuel pressure disappears. Whatever the issue is, seems to affect both cylinders equally, but the engine seems to idle OK...Perhaps a water leak into both cylinders, that seems like a long shot though, engine would probably seize up after running/sitting.
    Will "stay tuned"!

    • @kodibassInsideoutboards
      @kodibassInsideoutboards  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it was water in cylinder issue I would think when I tested it without L/U it would have run correctly. I have a few test to check out yet.. Carb-exhaust side ports-wiring-linkage etc. kodi
