    I've been a customer of many different Maxxis tire models. Maxxis is good, and I've used them for great ridiing. I swapped to Continental because I've been hearing good things about them. I will say Kryptotal Enduro casing, even the Trail casing is the best tire I've ever used. Really durable. Really fast rolling, and the lugs on the side for cornering holds really well. The transition from mide tire to side lugs isn't seamless but when you transition to side ot gives you confidence.

      How is the transition to the side knobs compared to say the DHF "dead spot"? Obviously the Assegai is seamless which is one of its biggest selling points and in my personal experience the Vittoria Mazza also transitions to its side knobs seamlessly. There's no reason for a "dead spot" tire anymore

    Couldn’t agree more with your review. These Conti’s definitely run better if they’re a bit softer. The DH casing can feel a bit “wooden” and it takes some time getting used to, messing around with psi etc. My next combo will be Kryptotal Front (DH casing) on the rear, and Argotal (DH casing) on the front.

    That's funny and interesting. I was on Kryptotal F and R for a few months (back tire blew out), Michelin Wild Enduro for 3 months (side knobs shredded off and Victoria Mazza and Martello for maybe 2 months (3 flats/punctures). Loved them all for the triangle reason, BUT. Back to Maxxis DHF OR Assagai EXO Front and Agressor DD Rear for me. Ran that combo for an entire year (2K miles) and no issues just wore out from so much riding. I'm done caring about "heavy tires". Fixing flats and having issues on the trail is so annoying and frustrating than carrying a few extra grams around. Its always the back tire for me that blows out from hits, but im sure everyones riding style and terrain they ride plays into factor also. I do 2 xc rides amd 2 enduro a week. Maybe 3-4 Bike Park days year and just have one bike for it all (hoping that'll change soon and get an xc bike for long mile days).

    I just switched from Assegai Maxxgrip front and DHR II maxxterra Rear to a conti setup. I'm running Kryptotal front enduro soft and a xynotal enduro soft in the rear. Only have like 3 rides on them but they definitely roll much faster than my last setup. Grip feels almost the same, I haven't noticed much of a difference yet. For anyone wondering, the enduro casing feels tougher/heavier than the EXO+ maxxis casing, and the soft compound feels a bit harder to the fingers than a maxxterra tire. The endurance compound is more similar to a maxxis dual compound tire.
    Also, how much do you weigh? 20-22 psi seems a bit low for my riding weight (165lbs). I usually run 23 front 26 rear with my maxxis (but I also run cushcore so idk if that makes a difference). Still running cushcore with the conti tires. Only downside is that the enduro casing was much more of a headache to mount with cushcore compared to my EXO+ casing maxxis. So far I'm impressed.

    Where to start. I read the reviews and months ago bought a Kryptotal for the rear of my Trek Rail. I'm an old fart and still like to run tubes - and run 30 psi to minimise punctures. For the life of me I couldn't fit the Kryptotal to my Bontrager rim so I took it to my Trek bikeshop and watched as two guys stretched themselves and the tyres to mount it. Rode with the tyre and really liked it (it rides firm but weight not an issue given the ebike) but I eventually recognised if I got a flat kilometres from home I don't have 4 hands to be able to change the tube off and on, so I bought Maxxis DHR II. I really like Maxis as reliable and easy to fit. In the mean time I bought myself some Industry Nine wheels to move away from the issues of Bontrager wheels (which independent bike shops would tell me about too). I recently wore the rear Maxxis out of tread and the rear was locking up and sliding more than I usually enjoy, so swapped the Kryptotal in. Took no time at all to fit to the Industry Nine - going straight on!! First ride today with the Kryptotal on the back and I couldn't believe just how much grip I had leaning the bike over through twisty single track, and going downhill I just can't tell you how much faster these things roll than the excellent Maxis DHR II. Great review which pretty much sums up everything I experienced today.

So there's usually a mix of large rocky platforms, loose sand over a rocky base or sand-based trails. I usually avoid riding wet trails as they get chewed up easily and don't cope like more loamy soils overseas. I would go krypto Re as a front tire (very similar to dhr2) with xynotal rear. That setup will destroy on a short travel trail rig!

    I always get the impression from every review of the Kryptotal front that is never quite at the level of the MaxGrip Assegai. The biggest thing the Contis have as a selling point in their favor right now is that Vali Holl runs them and won her world championships on them last year. I still want to try a set, but with them as expensive as Maxxis I'd want to try them on a demo bike before I plunk down $200 on unknown tires. And for me I would probably run DH casings on both ends with SS/S compounds, for loose, rocky Colorado conditions and a fair number of bike park days, I'm hard enough on tires to need DD casings and cush core out back.

    • @dustinbjohnson
      @dustinbjohnson  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah it’s not really comparing apples to apples for me. The Krypto Soft is equal to the Assegai Maxxterra. And the maxxgrip would be equal to the Krypto SuperSoft , which I haven’t tried yet but hope to soon!
      But kyrpto soft to the assegai maxxterra. I’m definitely taking the Krypto. Grip is equal and conti is more predictable for me

    • @justinfournier1285
      @justinfournier1285 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I have over $1000 in testing tires between Conti and Maxxis across 3 bikes, (German and Chinese made Conti) and the Kryptotal front Soft Enduro isn’t as grippy as a Maxxgrip Assegai in my conditions. It’s just not. I don’t have a DH casing requirement so I don’t have experience on the super soft conti, but that’s because they chose not to make it. At the same time, I’m in the PNW on the Xynotal soft enduro rear and it’s terrible for climbing. It has almost no grip on roots and no bite. Looking at the ramps why would you expect it to. So it’s easy to read comments and understand a bit about how someone rides compared to their comments.

    • @dustinbjohnson
      @dustinbjohnson  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@justinfournier1285 well you really have to compared the krypto enduro soft to the assegai maxterra. That’s the right comparison. The assegai maxxgrip should be compared to the krypto supersoft.
      I ride dry dusty trails. And I agree the xynotal performs more like a semi-slick. I really love the speed of that tire. But if I needed more climbing traction I’d go krypto rear. But like I said I’m not trying to tell anyone what to ride. Just sharing my opinion

    • @justinfournier1285
      @justinfournier1285 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@dustinbjohnson Yeah, I was basically seconding your opinion it’s not a good comparison, but with no equivalent casing/compound combination from Conti, it’s not an actual choice for someone who wants a really grippy front. Soft compound on trail casing would be a pass for me anyways, I’m close to 200lbs kitted up.
      That being said, my Conti Enduro/Soft are on a 140/120 bike and DD/EXO+ are on a 160/157 bike so one can prefer more grip for potentially higher speeds where pedaling isn’t as important, line choice, suspension setup, terrain and PSI are going to determine more than people seem to expect. Just casing changes ideal PSI, and inserts, rim width, and tire volume change more than people seem to understand as well. Running a 2.5” front with more volume and less PSI is going to provide more grip than a narrower higher psi option you can’t run lower, in most conditions, not to mention rim width varies across setups and effects profile. Someone running a 2.4” front on a 28mm isn’t in the same discussion as someone on a 2.5” front 33-35mm inner rim.

Rolling resistance is worse than the A/Dis combo and the grip in the wet is worse than the Assegai maxxxgrip. You're going to get a flat eventually at those pressures and those casings imo. I hope you don't but you're taking the risk. With these tires with the weight difference, for tubeless, go for the DH casing when in doubt (unless of course you aren't doing much downhill). They are fantastic, the kryptos for me were a big upgrade.

      What's better EXO+ or DD? I'm just getting back into mountain biking after playing D1 soccer. My bike came with the Forecaster EXO and I still haven't gotten a flat with my beginner riding but I know once I progress/better my skills I'm going to be an aggressive rider. I've been looking for some new tires but I'm having a hard time deciding between the EXO+ or DD as my full suspension bike is a trail bike. I do ride my bike from my house to the trails (skyline park) here in Napa, CA since it's only like a 10 minute ride. My main concern is getting a blowout/flat on the way to the trails or while on the trails and having to walk the bike back. I'm leaning towards the DD just for the fact that it seems more "bulletproof". Thank you in advance 🍻🙏🏽🤘🏽

    My favorite tire combo, which I use on my Stumpy Evo, is the 2.6 Maxxis Rekon front and 2.4 Rekon rear, both in 60tpi Dual Compound EXO/TR. Rolls very fast. Predictable traction. Consistent cornering. I've tried Dissectors, Rekon Races, Minions, Ikons. These give me the perfect mix of traction, rolling resistance, and weight.

      You used "consistent cornering" and Rekon in the same sentence? Assuming XC bike? I demoed a bike with Rekons on both ends and I would NEVER put a Rekon on the front of a bike, on the back sure, but it doesn't have enough corner knob for a front. Forekaster would probably be a good front to run with a Rekon out back.

      @@mrvwbug4423 A 2.4 Rekon, 2.4 Forecaster, 2.4 Dissector, none make a good front tire but they all make good rear tires.
      The 2.6 Rekon, 2.6 Forekaster, 2.6 Dissector, all make good front tires but I would not recommend them as rear tires.
      The 2.4 Minion DHR makes a good front or rear tire. The 2.6 Minion DHR, I wouldn't use front or rear.
      Changing the width of a tire just that little bit, totally changes the way a tire performs.

    What a great review! Thanks for posting Dustin. You inspired me to get a new Kryptotal 2.4 Enduro soft for my front. Looking for a rear option xynotal. Looking at the enduro soft or the trail endurance. It’s been a while since you posted the video. Would you still recommend the trail endurance for the rear?

    I ride super dry rocky and loose over hard stuff, almost always run exo DC dhf/aggressor or exo EC dissector/forekaster. Tried kyrptotal trail/endurance front and rear, was not impressed and front felt more squirrely and less hooked in than the dhf. I still have my trail/endurance xynotal, so I'll have to pick up a enduro/soft kryptotal and see if i can like this tire.

    I ride an Ibis Ripmo AF with Continental Kryptotal Fr. DH casing super soft compound, and a Xynotal DH casing soft compound on the rear.
    Compared to the Maxxis double Assegai, or Assegai/Dissector combo I've run previously. Better and more predictable grip, roll faster, and corner better.
    I've also experienced the Maxxis breakaway you speak of, it was horrible with the Assegai/Dissector combo.
