@VoiceOverMaster This was exactly what I needed. I had no idea how easy could be. ONE SUGGESTION THOUGH JOSH!!! Please HIGHLIGHT your mouse or make it bigger. Because it's the same color as the APP, many times I couldn't see where you were pointing to. I had to re watch 3-4 times to follow your cursor. Most people use a "highlighter" around their cursor. You and many others will thank me.

You do not need to have your mic or audio interface plugged in, prior to starting Audacity. Select TRANSPORT and Rescan Audio Devices if you fired it up without plugging in or you unplug after it's running.

I feel like I am either insane or on my way there. I am stuck. My peaks are too compressed or low (-10dBz usually), but if I amplify my peaks, the RMS becomes too noisy. All of the advice I see is when your peaks are too high and the RMS is low, but I do not see much for the opposite circumstance. I have this same problem on all 8 of my recordings, so I know that it is my fault, but I am following every instruction.

    • @VoiceOverMaster

It’s because when we export we now have the option for joint stereo… meaning we no longer have to make a stereo track and the file is half the size.

When I downloaded audacity and tried importing a MP3 file, it said that it didn't recognize that MP3 was a file type.

    What do I do?

Josh I'm SO confused! I just upgraded my PC and installed the latest version of
Audacity...and wish I hadn't. A lot of changes were made with absolutely no explanation regarding features that used to be one place, and now they scattered all over. I'd rater have the older version back.
Here's my delemma: When selecting a portion of a track, Audacity is only letting me select on the time/seconds mark. For instance, I can select 5.5 to 5.7 -- but I need it to go from 5.5 to a between 5.6 and 5,7 - but instead of doing that, It jumps all the way up to 5.8. So...there is NO WAY to select a exact part of a track. In the older version I could select any selection I wanted...but no more. Is this an Audacity Setting that can be changed - like changing to a "free selection" which would allow me to select exactly what I'm trying to select. No more, no less. Can anybody help me out here? Hopefully it's a simple setting that's easy to change. Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

Josh,..hello,..I just happened upon this and I have it bookmarked to really follow closely and attentively tonight when I have some quiet time. I do have another question to ask though and this is pertaining to microphones. I've recently acquired a new mic for myself and it is called the Electro-Voice RE20. I've been told that it is a wonderful microphone but I'm really anxious about using it because I'm uncertain as to what I need to plug it into (Interface) before it reaches my PC. There are so many out there and I really do not want some overly complicated box with a million settings but yet I want to get one that will still compliment the microphone well. Would you have any recommendations that would serve me well without breaking the bank or my brain??? Thoughts on the Scarlett 3rd gen usb?Help!!!! Thanks for any advice around this.

How do you record a second audio track while listening to the first? I clicked Track-->Add New. The new track appears, I select it, but I can't "engage" it. I hit record and nothing happens. Overdub is enabled in Transport Options, Overdub and Record on a new track are both checked in Recording Preferences and Software Playthrough is unchecked. And I can hear myself in the mic while just playing the first audio track so I know that configuration is correct.

Compressor: Shrinks dynamic range by turning loud stuff down
Limiter: Prevents audio from peaking above a user-defined limit
Normalize: Turns the entire clip up or down until the loudest peak hits a user-defined level

Does Audacity have a newer version of ACX Check. I found one but was unable to get it downloaded and added to the latest version of Audacity.

Topic requests from a longtime sub, in depth:
    - plot spectrum
    - spectogram
    - where sounds sit in frequencies, I.e. fullness around 250hz, edge around 4k, etc
    - EQ sweeping the Audacity way since you can't sweep really like you can in a DAW
    - how Audacity compares to DAWs, since it is literally like no other UI

Great ideas. I’ll consider them! I actually have a course on custom eq creation. I think you’d love it. Reach out if you’re interested. There’s also a buy now link in the description.

I really need your help on an issue I seem to have. I'm trying to record audio into audacity with my phone. But, I seem to screw it up every time and I'm not sure what in the world I'm doing wrong.

12:26 saying that you always select mono because audacity now has joint stereo is rather inaccurate, don't you think? i can't quite put my finger on what you're trying to say here.
