    Just ran the Leadville 100 in the Torrent. No blisters, no problems. Fit is such an individual issue. I have bunions and have very limited shoe options. These were great!

    I think you summed this shoe up perfectly. It is my go to trail shoe right now, especially in technical or wet terrain. It just grips onto everything and really inspires confidence on the trails. As someone with a high volume foot, I have not experience the lacing issues you had, they fit snug around the mid foot and heel, while still having room in the toe.
    Now, I'm just not sure what to do with the extra pairs of challenger 1's I've been hoarding over the past few years.

    I haven't experienced the sole of a hoka deteriorate as badly as this model. I had three speedgoats that have lasted about a year each with decent mileage. This model lasted maybe 6 months with lower mileage. I agree with you on all the positive points; but like you, this has been begun to hurt my feet.

    Hey Ethan; cheers for a pretty spot-on review. I've now done 200km in the Torrent and I am loving it; it blows the replaced Speed Instinct out of the water which had poor grip and a shocking upper. I think the larger depth lugs contribute to the firmer feeling, as I remember my first run in them not being as cushioned as expected. That said, I've grown to love them and I have thrown them at all the North Wales (UK) mountain terrain and they perform admirably, but can be slightly unstable at times, especially on off-camber or steep grass. As expected, not good on wet rock, but no shoe out there really is, at least not on greasy Welsh rocks!
    I too have to cinch up the laces pretty snug now, yet what with Hokas reputation of being slightly small, I ordered a 1/2 size up but now realise that wasn't necessary; will order a UK 9 when I get a replacement set.
    I think Hoka have finally done a great job with this shoe; the rand around the shoe prevents blow-outs and the upper is pretty durable, despite a few scrapes I've given them. As an aside, the ATR 4 I have is also doing great after the abysmal upper of the ATR 3.
    So, I personally recommend them, especially if you're loyal to the brand :)

    • @EHughes0658
      @EHughes0658 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattd4549 for me personally, good. My feet are 105mm at widest point but Hoka have been widening slightly recently. I should've stayed with a UK 9 though instead of 9.5 as they need cinching up during the run, like Ethan mentions. I think with the right size, this would be less of a problem. Try them though, I love them 😊 The ATR 3 was good for me but a UK 9.5 was ideal, whereas I've found I can use a 9 with the ATR 4. Upper much stretchier (especially when wet) on ATR 3 than 4, and felt sloppy during long runs. The ATR 4 is much better.

    Love my pair of Torents, took them out of the box and went on a 26 mi training run. No issues whatsoever. These are the shoes I hoped the Sense Ride would be. The more curved last and higher drop if the Salomons don't work for me past 20 mi. Now I'm eyeing the Speedgoat 2's for an upcoming race. Apparently they altered the overlay on the newer colors and removed the cutout where you saw the holes developing.

    Love the Torrent. Have put in just over 100kms in it and it holds up really well.
    The wider toe box is great and it certainly allows for speed.
    Overall I love the shoe and will get another pair when these ones wear out.

  • @michaeleverest3487

    I have about a 100 miles in my pair, the upper has loosened up but I don't really experience a drawback from it unless I'm descending very steep grade. I notice a lot of compression lines in the midsole sides so it does make me wonder about cushioning longevity , but so far it's still pretty great. Good enough shoe that I will use them for the Mogollon Monster 100 Mile in a few weeks.

      Ok, I really like this shoe. Used it in the Mogollon Monster 100mile but had to pull out due to kidney issues. I have over 100 miles in the shoe and yes, the shoe does stretch out quite a bit, it can be bothersome on very steep descents but not too bad. That's been the only issue for me, tread is holding, cushion is fine. It's a very good shoe.

  • @ericmills1212
    @ericmills1212 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Agree with you're most excellent review. had Torrent's for month or two. Only complaint is the "loosening" fit of the upper. But still great trail shoe. Just did a mountain marathon Sunday, but I did go with my older Speedgoat 2's, primarily for greater grip. Hoka is steadily taking over my shoe stable.

  • @zipz0p
    @zipz0p 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have about 200 pretty hard trail miles in my Torrents. I love them - they are comfy, feel snappy and fast, yet my feet felt pretty decent after a 30 mile, 8000 ft gain day in the mountains. They are grippy and have enough torsional rigidity to really do technical trails quickly, and enough cush for the long days. They seem to breathe and dry quickly. BUT I have already ripped one lug off, and several others are loose. I've got a seam on the toe box where the toes flex against the lacing box, and it looks like it might break through any minute. Both of the toe caps have come loose and I've glued them down.... So not so sure about build quality, but gosh they are comfortable. I like to get 400-500 miles out of a shoe, and I'm not sure these will get me there, but I'm happier than I've been with any other shoe recently.

  • @roostermiller
    @roostermiller 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Voice over is GOLD!!! Have been running in the torrent, and I mainly use them for when I train on grass for the extra grip. It has been a good replacement for the speed instinct and I like using the torrent on the roads is a surprising great tempo shoe. One question I wanted to know, Is the last or frame of the torrent on any other shoe, road mainly, I would love for them to use it in conjunction with clayton/mach cushioning system.

  • @banta412
    @banta412 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also just finished the Leadville 100 and the Silver Rush 50 miler in the Torrent and they did incredibly well. Would definitely not recommend it as a 100 mile shoe just because of the limited cushion but overall its my favorite trail shoe. Finally there is enough room in the toe box that my toes aren't rubbing one another. The dual density foam and the lugs seem to grip anything that I have run them through. Definitely would recommend adding a pair or 3 of these to your quiver. Can't wait to shred these things on some trail tomorrow!

  • @lukelarsson
    @lukelarsson 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love this shoe! I ran the Volcanic 50k in it and had no problems except for some pain on the bottoms of my feet. I was out there for ten long hours so I’m not going to blame the shoe for that. My feet actually hurt more in the Speedgoat 2 during a previous 50k. The sharp volcanic rocks did cut through some of the mesh in two spots but that stuff is super sharp!

    They are my main trail shoe right now, and my first Hokas. Had to size up one because I got some pinky rub, but despite looking comically large, they have been great up to about 15 miles. I notice the drop off in midsole cushion too. Hopefully mine survive until my 25k in 3 weeks!

    Hi Ethan. Could you sometimes do something like a "post-review"? Usually you say that a shoe is holding up well after 100 miles or so and that you'll see how it'll hold up in the long run. I think it would be great if you could just post a pinned comment here or update the description with a short info on durability after maybe 300-500 miles. What do you think?

    First pair still going strong and love them. Bought second pair around Christmas and decided to run a 12 trail just to break those in now for future use. At about mile I looked down and noticed the rubber membrane protector that wraps all the away around the shoe at base of the fabric and top of the sole had peeled away cleanly on on both sides of the left shoe. Basically it was falling apart at eight miles. WTH? Forget the glue or something?

      Durability is really good, just the cushion starts to pack out (like most EVA shoes). I ran in the rain once and the upper then stopped stretching. I think most people are going 1/2 a size down, I stayed true to size and yeah they feel a bit big. I had terrible fit problems with this shoe. For me, it runs about a half to a full size too large. I have a narrow foot - I cannot wear Altras, for example - but not so narrow that shoes like the Speedgoat don't feel small. I really cannot get the midfoot to work for me. I have to lock it down so much it hurts the top of my foot. Consequently, I'm fighting the shoe, and that means it is really unstable on technical downhills. *If* I wear my thickest Drymax socks, this is a 20 mile shoe for me on not very technical stuff. Bummer. The Speed Instinct, which these are supposed to replace, would have been a great shoe had it not been for the durability problems and tread. It seems like Hoka can never get it more than two thirds of the way right.

      The heel cup is not bad at all. I love a athletic heel cup in my running shoes and my pair doesn't make me feel like my heel is slipping out. I only put on 15 miles total so far for the 2 days I've had them, but felt great for some pretty technical trails. Hope that helps.

    Question how does this compare to something like the Altra Superior? Does the toe box have a wider fit or narrow like most Hokas these days?

      Chris Howie I put around 300 miles on my superiors. They weren’t feeling right. Turns out my metatarsal was striking right where the sup’s have little padding. Switched them out for the lone peak 4’s ive put around 60 on them. Lone peaks have a wider box and my heel comes up. They arent a fast shoe for me. Ive stumbled multiple times and ate shit in a trail race wearing the LP4’s. A sponsored altra runner friend of mine suggested I try the female version of the LP4’s. Ended up getting the hoka torrents. Put 10 trail miles on them today near Tahoe.
      I have found my new race shoe. They stick to my feet and inspire confidence. Extremely fast shoe. Wider than most brands but nothing will be as wide as Altra. Fully submerged one foot in water half way and it felt dry by the end of the run. Fully submerged torrent did losen up a bit after getting wet but i never stopped to adjust.
      Altra is the widest shoe brand I have worn. I think they are actually a bit too wide for me in the toe box and heel, but I am a super skinny dude. 6ft 150lbs hope this helps you out my dude.

    I'm hoping Ethan is just trolling us with the voice overs because if he's being politically correct, that would not be cool. He totally mispronounced the name of the Hierro which is a Y sound at the beginning of the name and didn't do any voice over. Please don't go PC on us dude.

      Perdomot um what? I pronounced hierro exactly like my NB rep pronounces it without hard Spanish pronunciation, silent “H” and rolled “r”s. And with this, it’s obviously a joke on the fact Hoka changed pronunciation multiple times over the last 5 years. Did you not watch to the end of the review? 7:20 for reference. Curious how either of these situations is being “politically correct”? I’m just doing the same thing I’ve been doing for the last 7 years and am beholden to no one.

      Glad you were just joking around dude. Seems like there are lots of folks trying to be a little too culturally sensitive these days and I got the wrong impression. Apologies on that. As for the Hierro, your NB rep is wrong as I am latino and we pronounce it Yierro, no H sound at all. Looking forward to the next review.

      Perdomot thats exactly how my Spanish language training would have me pronounce it, but I sided with the brand’s choice in that video seeing as it’s their shoe, their name, yadda yadda. Also, they may market it differently in different regions. As for the “One One”, same story. Same with “Bondi”. Same with “Mafate”. Regardless, in no way am I trying to be politically correct in either video.
