I swapped the scales on one of my landers, and it was my first time customizing a knife. I’ve always worried about taking apart knives to customize them in fear that I wouldn’t be able to put them back together right, so I was stoked when I found out about the lander and the fast swap scales! I stripped the first screw (totally user error) and I panicked 😅 I finally got the screw out, and was so relieved that the knife came with extra screws in the box. Thank you for making this video, as a knife newbie I really appreciate this info!
I don't think you understand how happy it makes me that you know the cat's name. Funny story: my neighbor, Trent, designed the cat. He named it after the guy that used to live in my house. I didn't really know Gary personally, but rumors say he was a grumpy fellow. So, it warms my little heart to know that Gary the Cosmo Kitty is a happy, plump, lively dude. Trent nailed it.
This was super helpful! I couldn't get my new screws into my new scales. Used too much pressure, didn't tighten one side all the way, both pivot screws were spinning, screws dropping on the floot. It was a mess. Then i found this video. Kudos my dude. I appreciate the help. Some firm pressure got that sucker right out! ✌️
I recently purchased the lander and I got to say that this is the perfect knife, the action is so smooth, the detent is one of the best I've seen and I love the green micarta, and razor sharp, I absolutely love it , great job.
Soo, I think I made the decision to give my Son his first knife and I need (not want) it to be the Lander. Why? So, KNAFS supplies everything for the knife from tools, scales, driver, strops, extra screws.. just friggin EVERYTHING for it. This not only gives him the things to maintain his knife, but also the ability to learn and make mistakes with knowing that KNAFS can support him in doing so. They also show in his poster EVERYTHING that KNAFS has on their knife but a world full of ideas if he chooses to go a different path to other makers/designs. As he grows up, he has options to fill his grip with the Lander 2 or the BIG Banter. Sooo many options! This is something that I wish I had growing up when I first learned about knives! I don't mean to sit here and stroke your ego, but KNAFS is doing amazing things for our knife community from a kid to a 90yo adult. I applaud your vision, Ben and I'm grateful for all KNAFS does. You deserve nothing but the best! 🍻❤️
Thanks for the video I bought the extractor and removed a stripped pivot on my shaman , it’s been like this for months , the screw and extractor worked awesome , I had to go deep into the screw and made a hole , but it worked , thanks now I’m waiting for the new pivot to come in mail and I can modify with burgundy scales
Changing the Lander 2.0 to 8's is the best choice. Wait till you have some more ideas to add to the improved model. Maybe a hollow ground 14c28n blade ? ✌
It's the cheap bits. I stripped the original screws with cheap bits. Just like you showed, Wiha bits were able to remove the stripped screws. The cheapo bits must have slightly smaller teeth that strip off the middle of the torx slots but leave enough teeth for good bits to leverage.
Honest to god stripped a new screw 5 minutes before seeing this video, thanks Ben!! Unfortunately this happened with my wiha bits , going to try the drill method.
Great video Ben! T6 works fine if you have a good bit and driver. But next round t8 would be better probably like you said. Either way, you are great. Good stuff
Hey Ben! I would love to see you put out a hard use knife like the Rat 1, but with your spin on it. Offer it in Aus10 as well as an affordable medium stainless such as 154CM or S35VN.
3 months too late for me . . . I couldn't get the right size screw extractor, but that's okay, I just will never use the OG scales for my Griptilian or Freek (the ugly 2-tone ones) ever again. It's weird, some screws do that snap right away and others you're having to fight and it's all on the same knife! As always, great video, great products. Ben - you really care about the community - Thank you!
Great video! i find that the benchmade bits that i use are slowly eating the paint from the screws :( giving shiny spots, i sharpy them for the time beeing.. untill i can get my hands on the Knafsdriver :D
Fantastic content ! Love the lander, would love to have one but Brazil is going to go deep in my pocket for this one. Some for the Torx who would come at 75 $ for me. I just can't have it :( You can't always get what you want. Continue your amazing work, your positivity and humor is intoxicating. Can't wait to see you again with Zac, you are a great pair. Good continuation.
Such a good question. Assuming there’s a Large Lander on the horizon, the scale and pivot will be T8. The clip will still be T6 because of the available space on the clip. 😉
what is your solution in free spinning screws when you need a driver on both sides? How do you get the right amount of pressure when trying to hold two screws
Great question. I use two drivers on both sides of the screws. It's tricky business to hold them both at once, but it can be done. Sometimes having a friend help is useful.
Suggestions on hitting with heat? I’ve done that with a heat gun and melted the scale (that I was throwing away anyway.) Soldering iron didn’t work in that case.
Is it a Lander or different knife? That’s why I prefer a hair dryer- chances of melting are slim. You may be in for the “dremel a flathead in the screw” program.
Not sure if anyone said anything yet but I need to warn everyone to put the knife on a table or your choice of anything other than your HAND. If the knife slips you could stab your hand with the T6 bit and that will hurt, probably a lot more than you thought..or so I've been told😂 gloves are helpful also.

I'm wearing the same shirt while watching this. Gary is the best knife mascot ever.
We love to hear that! We're pretty fond of him as well.
what?! no way , i am wearing mine too! #teamspacekitty

I love what you are doing! In the sea of mass produced knives- your understanding of the knife community is refreshing.. Thanks!
I second that!
I have 7 landers and only had one screw get stripped. Thanks Ben for the great tips and tricks
Seven? 🤨

Ben you’re a credit to the industry 👏 love your work
Thanks! I'm just doing my thing over here, trying to put out cool stuff. I'm glad you appreciate it.
Knife education like this should be taught in schools across the country
And I volunteer to be the National Superintendent. 👨🎓

I have been waiting for this!! Awesome
Great video. I have a few 704 brand knives that had way too much thread lock on the pivot screws, hair dryer did the trick. Thanks.
Changing the Lander 2.0 to 8's is the best choice. Wait till you have some more ideas to add to the improved model.
Maybe a hollow ground 14c28n blade ? ✌
An awesome video, stripped screw removal bug with a drill worked like a charm. Wiha bits also pulled one out before the drill!

Yep, exactly! I think the cheaper bits are cheaper for a reason. WIHA definitely makes some really high quality products.
That tambourine banging monkey scared the crap out of me. 😂😂😂

Great video! Also, respect the admission that they should be t8.
So then the Big Lander will certainly have t8s?
Such a good question. Assuming there’s a Large Lander on the horizon, the scale and pivot will be T8. The clip will still be T6 because of the available space on the clip. 😉
@Ben Banters Of course, how could I miss the alliteration. Thanks for the reply.
Any advice for getting a screw out that has a missing head? When I was putting it back in the head twisted right off
What, Ben has a channel? Subbed!
didn't expect clapping monkey jump-scare. shit my pants
So where do we find new screws to replace the stripped ones?
Waiting for any of your designs in Magnacut!
Any plans for a compact edc fixed blade? One with easily swappable scales fits your brand.
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with what's coming.. 😁

Yeah! 500th like! Thanks for the info ben
The joys of having a Lander on original scales , then swapping out for Starry Night G carta then swapping out for Kirinite , never had issue
you can also touch the face with a soldering iron for a few seconds if the hair dryer doesn't do the trick.
The stop pin screw on my PM2 was so stuck, I had to drill off the tip and break the screw at the base
I also stripped a screw and was able to solve it i changed from my T6 bit to a T7 bit

@@benbanters thanks Ben, it was the pivot on a Deka. I even called them, and was told they didn’t want people taking it apart 😂. Enter the heat gun!
Another way to put some heat on the screws is to use the tip of a soldering gun or a woodburning tool
Soldering iron to heat it. Works every time.
What I do is use a small cutting disk to make a slot for a flathead screwdriver
I haven't encountered one that tiny. Do you have a link to one? I've got bigger Dremel disks, but I end up ruining the scale to put the notch in.
What do you do if it’s red lock tight? 😅
Moooooar heat!
@@benbanters lol. it’s so simple, yet brilliant!
Bro I seen this thumbnail b4. 😂
I laughed out loud when I saw it. Weird one, but hey, you watched. It worked? 🤣
thank u sir
Key statement here?" Don't force it" That works in all things in life.

Like your video's
Has anyone ever push a torx screwdriver through their palm trying to unscrew an overly tight screw?
Yapping stops at 4:04
You could sell t8 thread screws so that we could drill our own t8 holes.
I love it. No plans for this, but it’s a solid idea.
Can I pay you to do this for me?
Wear a leather work glove in case your driver slips.
I should. And safety glasses when drilling. I’m a walking OSHA disaster. 😝
Using the wife's hair dryer for knife repair is asking for trouble. 🙈
Electric screwdrivers are nice but definitely don't recommend them for knives.*
