- Photojournalist Jacqueline Bouvier was fearless, charming, and single when she was introduced to a young Congressman from Massachusetts. And as told in the new book "Camera Girl," Jackie was no shrinking violet when it came to pursuing Washington's most eligible bachelor in the early 1950s. Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with author Carl Sferrazza Anthony, and with Martha Bartlett, the Georgetown hostess who, along with her husband, Charles, was responsible for pairing up Bouvier with John F. Kennedy.

I would enjoy a much longer interview with Martha Bartlett she is amazing at 97!
She seems very sharp. What a blessing it is to still have people alive from those eras to tell the tales. For someone in their 20s it's not just like they're from a different time but also from a whole different world. I love these interviews. Extremely exciting 🙂
She’s so elegant as well, we all wish we could look and act that well into our 90’s. What a blessing.
Martha Bartlett is astounding. She's glamorous, astute, and way more "with it" than some people half her age. Amazing woman!!!😍
Martha Bartlett is very direct and very clear regarding her insights around Jackie, and she is correct: In many ways, Jackie's life was tragic once getting past the veneer of the "well-bred" debutante presumption. Jackie's father had the disease of alcoholism (and gambling) and could not give her away at her wedding. Her mother, ever - grasping for a very wealthy - financially secure - man to provide a very comfortable life she felt she was entitled to live --- often left her children to fend for themselves with a maid, cook or boarding school as supervision. And that is just for starters. But to her credit, Jackie made sure to distance herself from the insanity that was the Kennedy clan once her husband died -- moved to NYC and raised two remarkable children that are her well deserved legacy. And Jackie also went back to her first passion -- writing and writers - working for publishing houses. Out of a disastrous childhood, Jackie did live a well-lived life -- in her own right and on her own terms. And Martha Bartlett had a front row seat to it all and to her credit -- has never sought out media attention -- a true friend never does.
You’re absolutely right, Jackie on her wedding day was so stressed out also because Joe Kennedy chose her dress, the cake, who were invited as guests to her wedding, she basically just showed up nothing was to her liking but you could never tell by the wedding movies, she looked so gorgeous and happy. After Jack was killed she was afraid that “they” would go after her children because they were Kennedy and when Bobby was killed she wasn’t surprised one bit. Jackie was very private and wanted to get away as far as she could from the cameras and the Kennedys that’s why she married Onassis, he provided stability and a lot of privacy too. I’m just glad she didn’t live to see John Jr die in that plane crash.
So very true and JFK, Jr. had his pilots license but was not trained for the one which killed him, his wife and sister-in-law. It was truly a reckless decision.
You left out the part where Martha Bartlett said "we all like fairy tales"...Jackie was a social climber. She wouldn't have looked at Jack had he not been heading for the W.H.

@Gigi1111Layna: What Martha was saying - in my view - was that the public likes ”fairy stories” and, in fact, it was no such thing - the whole “Camelot” aura was in the public domain and was certainly not in private.
Fascinating story Tracy and Mrs. Bartlett looks and sounds amazing. She also pulls no punches and I enjoyed listening to her recall her memories with Jackie and John.
That women in incredibly fascinating. She's intelligent, she's opinionated. She's like a friend or a grandmother or an aunt I'd like to be "when I grow up".

The King and Queen of Camelot. I was only 6 when he was assassinated, my own dad died 2 weeks to the day in November '64 so the whole aura of my early years was horrible young deaths. My Mom crying when she got home from work in NYC, and again in November 1964. It made me feel a connection with the Kennedys.
It is astounding that at 66 years old i still feel like that lost little girl. My Mom was as beautiful as Jackie, Dad was an Army man. As Fannie Flagg wrote, Sometimes I Just Can't Wait to Get to Heaven 💙🌠❤️

Oh yes she was a catch , well educated,French fluent,world traveler and elegant lady ,she was the it girl,who got all politicians around the world crazy to meet her ,she was Kennedy’s best ambassador ! RIP Jackie

Martha is a treasure. I have loved listening to the stories of my elders. One a guard of Geronimo . Now I’m 72 and have stories to tell. I was shocked and horrified at the loss of Camelot . Forever marked my life.

Great piece. Iwould love to hear more from Mrs Bartlett . It is easy to see from the photos of a young Jackie that John-John looked like her and the rest of the Bouviers. Caroline has the Kennedy look.
I could honestly say, this woman is more than a legion, a saint, a woman of means. Camera girl brings to cinematic life Jackie's years as a young single woman trying to figure out who she wanted to be. She had two children, ran the oval office, and a figure for the American woman & men. The world adored her.

Jackie Kennedy must have been incredibly ambitious and knew what she wanted. The tragedy to me, long before JFK was ever assassinated, was his rampant infidelity. That must have been soul-destroying and his death was a final blow. To have paired-up then with Onassis who apparently wanted a trophy wife was degrading and most-likely regrettable. Such an unhappy life for such an accomplished woman.
Most powerful men fall around discreetly, but JFK’s heart and soul belong to Jacki..
Jackie knew full well what she was getting into and what was going on. It's been reported that she was 'gone out of the White House' regularly because she had a lover in France.

People who believe otherwise are naïve and they’re not wealthy and powerful so they just don’t get it..
Jackie knew all about his infidelities but was determined not to resemble her own mother in dealing with Jackie’s father’s roving eye. She loved Jack for the person he was & felt he loved her as well. Especially after the death of baby Patrick in august ‘63. The tragedy brought them much closer & in Jackie’s own words, “We were finally having a real marriage.”

Yes I couldn't quite work out what she meant by that. It seems to me she was just a teeny bit jealous of Jackie. It's normal to meet other people through friends, whether they are senators or not. Nothing wrong with being ambitious in life, especially in the 50's and 60's, when it was very much a man's world.
Martha was more delightful and more interesting than anyone else in this tale. At 97! Good for her.

I realize this does not have anything to do about content, but….at exactly 4:00 minutes into the segment, in the background of her Early American Collection, there is a “bird sculpture “ (that’s what I call it) that I also own. I found it in a Boutique shop in SLC and never asked about it’s background but I love it. Does anyone know anything about it?

We used to call these kind of people preppies. Trust funded, boarding schools, Cape Cod, Ivy league, all socially connected of course, and places in the New York social register. It still exists of course.

Jackie told people that Martha was an overzealous matchmaker, when in reality she was the one being a controlling person. Jackie was (allegedly) manipulative and blamed her friend. Martha has probably been known as the Kennedy’s matchmaker her whole life even though she doesn’t seem to find any joy in that and feels like she was taken a little advantage of. How is Martha being honest about it “throwing her under the bus”?
This is what happens sometimes in unhealthy relationships. The person who speaks out about being manipulated gets blamed or called a bad friend, etc. They aren’t allowed to speak out.
She's 97, she can afford to be brutally honest, she doesn't care and she wouldn't lie at that age. She is totally believable. Jackie's mother was pushing her daughters to marry well and they did.
It was common then for women to maneuver behind the scenes to get men to ask them out, to become exclusive bf/gf, get engaged and married. It was called "he chased her until she caught him.". No one does this now so Martha's statements can appear harsh minus the 1950s context.
Old people and children tell the truth. We love them for it. 😊

Her mother made sure his hotel room was stocked with the liquor(s) he liked, so that he’d be too intoxicated to show up for her wedding, let alone give her away. After their divorce, they had a very toxic relationship.

Watching so many .. CSI Crime cases on TV...we all get skilled as investigators detectives by now, having some kind of suspects after all these years. Such as.. for being so gorgeous as a First Lady she was not that scandalized of her husband to have other love affairs, they were only rumors, sex was used to manage political power. JFK was a war veteran, he had back bones problems, l think he was ready to give his own life for his country, it was him the one to order his execution, if you watch closely those terrible shooting moments, Jackie was not very surprised but rather concerned to look good on camera. When Kennedy senior was in business with other whiskey smugglers, mafia never let you go, they blackmail you forever and you have to be grateful if they let you live, he wanted to put end the mobsters corruption among American political parties and we should say, he made it
