The whole aesthetic of the PS2 was so cold, dark and lonely. It's only more than a decade later that I realise just how chilling it was; it didn't register with me as a kid. But it still holds up well today in my opinion.
I do that a lot when I play the PS2. In-fact, it's actually how I found out about my Star Wars: Battlefront II data bceoming corrupted. No idea how it got corrupted especially since it's been ages since I last played it, last time I saved I didn't turn off the console and the data wasn't corrupted after a while since I last played it.
Fun fact: If you have more towers in the intro, that means you have more games. If you have taller towers you played the game for a long time. That is why everyones startup screen is different.
Since its PlayStations 30th anniversary today, if you own a PS5 you get pick an old PlayStation Theme and I chose PS2. Since I haven't played PS2 for 21 years I came to watch this video to remember what it sounds like and PlayStation done a decent job bringing the old sound theme back.

The sound does being you back but I always felt like I was inside the ps2 or something with system configuration. And the white glow light is like a lost soul wondering around in your ps2. That's how I pictured it. And the red screen of death is hell.

I was messing around with the display and chose RGB component. It made my screen black. This video helped me navigate the menu to activate YPBPR display again. You're a life saver!!!!
I still remember when memory cards weren't even 1GB big! Hell they were barely 44 MBs! It's amazing that we thought that was big compared to what we think is big now (1TB) 😳
Ten or twenty years later, people will walk around with 500TB USB sticks as if it were the norm, and there would be another unit called MTB (mega terabyte) that they find big... over one billion gigabytes XD

The sound at 1:14 all the way thru 2:24 used to scare me more as a kid than the "famous" red screen of death.. it just made me mad because the disc was not working, but this sound, its just creepy because i stayed up all night and hearing this sound gave me the chills and i keep thinking that someone is looking at me thru my bedroom.. still gives me the chills since i'm older now.. *EDIT* also those sounds going up and down the browser and system configuration screen made me uncomfortable as well.
what I'm impressed by the most is that when you go to the File Browser, one of the light dots goes away from the animation and serves as a cursor for selection, and then when you leave, it returns to its original point and continues the animation
The PS2 menu is just so incredible, I first played on a PS2 in 2015 if I remember correctly and its somehow nostalgic to me. Nowadays I actually play on it daily.
I remember my grandma has a ps2 in her house for me when I visited. I played games like spider man, polar express, even a game it was like a Disney skater thing. My grandma passed away a few years later and my family took the remaining artifacts from her home. Unfortunately my cousin took the PSN but had no intention to use it. Probably because I snagged the controller:)
+aaronmeeks It's known as aural immersion; the idea being that sounds take you away from your own environment and into the experience of the product. So, unusual compositions grab and retain your attention :-) Consoles don't feature them to the same degree now likely to make them more living room 'friendly'.
+aaronmeeks I fucking love the PS2 startup sound, but if there was anything that scared me as a kid it was the Red Screen of Death the PS2 had when it couldn't recognize the disc. Something about just felt so hostile and creepy, always freaked me out as a kid.
I remember having Piglet's big game on the PS2 as an infant and the intro was scary. If you put this video on another Google tab with the game on another tab it makes the game intro even more creepier.
The only PlayStation 2 that I have is at my grandparents' house. Amazing line in PlayStation's order. Good games, and very amazing graphics. I had resident evil 4, Cabela's dangerous hunts, some weird pinball game, Mojo, intellivision collection, and gutiar hero 3. Update: they let me have it.

i remember having a ps2 in 2015, it was a hand-me-down from my uncle to my sister, i was 4, i remember just watching my sister play it, i remember going to try and "fix" the ps2 when there was nothing wrong with it, luckily i didn't do anything bad, i just went to the memory card menu not knowing anything, i was literally not able to read and just pressing buttons.
I don't think at the time any of us appreciated how fucking amazing this is. Heavily associate this with Kingdom Hearts 1. The final hurrah before everything went online.
