  • This video shows launch of homebrewn applications from within PSBBN and PS2 HDD OSD on a original (not modified) SCPH-30000 PlayStation 2 console.
    The video contains footage of a Video Game user interface owned by SONY Interactive Entertainment (formerly known as Sony Computer Entertainment Inc./ SCEI). This video footage is meant to display design elements of the user interface and the user experience of executing installed games of the "PlayStation BroadBand navigator" product. This product ceased to be supported in 2008, and in March 2016 it's online service was removed. It is no longer possible to access some of the screens I display on the video due to lack of online services

    Yes, this was legit SONY software which was used in Japan starting around 2002 which replaced the HDD OSD software:
    TH-cam video ID for my HDD OSD vvideo: qxzHzLIdiWg
    The point is that PSBBN was SONY first attempt at making something like the PS Store and PSN we have today on PS3/ PSP and PS Vita/PS4.

    It's a sort of browser system SONY made in 2001 for the Japanese PS2 market. When they released it they renamed the HDD kit as "BB UNIT" and that browser replaces the original PS2 browser with one which is internet capable. They had also a sort of store where you could download demos of games and install on the HDD. It never made out outside of Japan.

      If Sony didn't do that bs and sell it worldwide (around the world in simple words).It will have been a huge success .
      Too bad it has been only in Japan.
      Same thing happened to the Satelaview kit for the SNES (Which Has been sold xclusively in Japan itself)
      But later the scenario got worsened as the Satelaview server gave its last breath in summer of 2000 due to the Nintedo's Refusal partnership with the St.GIGA in 1999 (Plus ST.GIGA had alot of uncovered debts when this happened.St.GIGA decleared bankruptcy in 2003. 3 years after Satelaview's Discontinuation).
      If Nintedo had to sell the Satelaview worldwide.
      It will have been a Huge Success to anyone around the world.
      Too bad those who i mentioned ..din't came to the rest of the world.
      ☹️

    It's the ancient software which gave origins for what we know today as "PSN".
    Back then SONY wanted to sell PS2 games for the HDD in Japan using this "browser". Then HD LOADER happened and they canned everything.

    • @That_Handle
      @That_Handle 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leonard Oliveira ,
      Did HD Loader have a way of transferring files using an on-board browser? I thought that HD Loader still depended upon an external file share / transfer via PC to a removed PS2 HDD or PC to PS2 vis ethernet connection or a otherwise a USB flash drive intermediate step... anthropologically curious.

    You know it's not a good thing if Sony does something like this.
    "Consumers that knew about PlayStation Broadband Navigator were confused as to why it wasn't included with the HDD Utility Disc. SCEA's response was always that PlayStation Broadband Navigator would be released in North America "at a later date." This date now appears to be never in light that SCEA has switched to only manufacturing the slim, HDD-incompatible PS2 models and stopping manufacture of HDD units for their region."

    swear free HD BOOT corrupts itself when you try to uninstall it, and sends your ps2 into a continuous boot up

    • @leonardoliveira
      @leonardoliveira  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually what is happening is that it left the signed boot loader program at the hdd MBR but removed the other stuff. The MBR is looking for the other stuff which is now missing (as the uninstall deleted it) and once not found it aborts boot. The problem is that when it aborts boot the PS2 tests for the HDD having a boot sector again, which in turn again invokes the HDD MBR and the loop repeats.

    What is PlayStationBB

    • @leonardoliveira
      @leonardoliveira  10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      PlayStation BB was a combination of a service (virtual store) and linux based browser software for the PS2 which formed what was the ancestor of the current "PSN" you see on the PS3 and PS4. It begun service in 2002 and ended in 2008. It was available only for Japan.
      There were several "channels" where famous Japanese companies would upload demo versions of their games for download (these would work from the HDD, without need a disc) and even one PS1 game could be downloaded and run from the HDD that way.
      I suspect their plan was to sell games online using PS BB service but they changed their mind when HD Loader released. From 2004 onwards they started to remove things from the service until 2008 when it closed completely.
      Today only thing available at PS BB is the "Koei Gamecity" channel (pictured on this video) because of their online game "Nobunaga Online".

      +Dave G It was a replacement for the original PS2 browser which was installed on the HDD. Back then (2002) SONY had plans of making something in line what the PSN the PS3/PS4/PSP/PSV uses nowadays. It didn't go further and got slowly cancelled up around 2005. They finally closed it down completely in early 2015 by disabling the last game which used it (Nobunaga Ambition Online).
      I posted this video just to show how it could be used to load and launch games from the HDD. Games you would buy with credit card and download to your console through the internet. (like PSN is today, no?)

      @leonardoliveira  10 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I don't want to be rude, but I don't think you happen to know what this video is about ... :)
      A few years ago reverse engineering of the PS3 security modules exposed the encryption keys for the PS2 "Magic Gate" security mechanism and since then "the scene" was able to boot stuff from memory card or hard drive in a completely legit unit. (no modchip)
      Before that an exploit was being used (Free MC Boot). And because the HDD boot file was not possible to be hacked, there were no way to use a HDD to boot the PS2. Now there's FHDB. (Free Hard Drive Boot)
      Since version 1.8C Free MC Boot has been using signed files instead of the exploit.
      On this video I was demonstrating boot up of signed files from the HDD.
      The HDD was never released on PAL regions so there were never PAL compatible HDD software until "the scene" hacked it to be "region free".
