  • The time has finally come to harvest the maize silage.

    Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, follow me as I post videos of my daily farm life milking 320 jersey cows in beautiful New Zealand.
    The cows are almost on a all grass system with a bit of supplement to allow for our hot dry summers.
    I farm with my father on our family dairy farm making me the 4th Generation to farm here.

    Very good shots with the drone. I seen an interesting way on how to cover your bunker from an American TH-cam channel they lined the outside of the walls with wrap and then when the stack is done you could pull the sides of the wrap over top of your maize/silage then it was properly sealed around the edges and had minimal wastage pretty interestinf

      Next summers feed, I don’t feed any supplement through the winter (there will be hay feed this winter tho)

    I see you do it like here in America. So different than when I was a kid growing up on a dairy farm in Southern California until the age of 10. They only had grain when milking.

    seems to work great, twin row! what is the yield increase... and what density do you seed? nice to see how you work at the other side of the world. funny because spring is on his way here in France

      Good question, but I’m not sure if there was any difference to be honest, it was pretty similar to other years yields, plant at 95,000/ha. Thanks for watching 👍

      Haven’t got the bill yet, but the cost to grow & harvest is roughly .21cents /kgDM.

      I don’t during the summer but if there’s a bit of rain coming I do, so I’ll cover it now till the end of the season

    Fendt used to use Deutz motors,but have gone to the low revving MAN engine.
    It weighs 13 tons.
    I have the same tractor and it is using only 4 l/ha on Kverneland 10.4 M triple mower/groupers.
    It ticks over at 650 rpm.

      I cut 4,000 ha per year with two sets of triple mowers.

    Great job.first time I see the twin roll. On corn silege.so how many plants per hectare there ? Here in santa catarina state ,brasil we work with 80000 seeds per hec.

      @@TheOnceADayFarmer so that crop was 100 tonnes from five hectares which is 20 tonne per hectare here in lreland where I have maize it usually yields around 50 tonne per hectare any idea why there's such a massive difference?

      I think it yielded about 23t/ha but I was talking dry matter sorry, would probably be pretty similar to yours as I assume your talking wet weight??

      @@TheOnceADayFarmer so 23tonnes dry matter per hectare at about 33%dry matter would give you 70 tonnes full cut weight which is very impressive compared to the 50tonnes full cut weight and 20tonnes dry matter per hectare here in Ireland

    How many hectares of maize do you do per cow? Can you speak a bit more about de diet, the amount of silage you give your cows and the amount of milk they produce? i'm seriouly thinking on replace my holstein for jersey the cost of buying concentrate is killing me
