I hope everyone understands that when watching your video. I definitely wouldn't call this a hate video. More like criticism to the Sonic Community for doing something that hurts others for just expressing themselves.

Great video, dude! I agree with all of your points!
I’m definitely trying to switch things up a lot more lately, and will continue to do so. I feel, at this point, people seem to be more annoyed with how many channels are doing it rather than the actual content itself. My only gripe with certain other mod channels is how some of their thumbnails are extremely similar to thumbnails I’ve done before, and video titles. I can imagine this gets really confusing for the viewer. Nothing wrong with taking inspiration though, I guess.
Something I need to clear up too: The name “Sonic Central” was decided on all the way back in 2014, way before this new “Sonic (insert word here)” trend started. it’s annoying when this channel is grouped into that trend, despite the channel being almost 9 years old this year. Mods have also been on this channel since 2014.
Regardless, I still feel people should be allowed to upload whatever they want without getting dogpiled. Constructive criticism can go a long way, but it very rarely goes that way. It’s easy to be civil and respectful to others.
Anyway, sorry for the long comment. I appreciate you putting the time in to get this across. 👍

I wasn't going to watch the whole video at first, as I've seen this type of video a few times now. Did end up watching the whole thing and am really glad I did, it was a really well put together video. Reading some of the comments and just seeing myself in this video as one of the big 3 was honestly a big motivation booster. Then seeing multiple people comment how they watch my channel due to how well my gameplay flows makes me happier than I've been in a long time! My average recording time on ONE stage is an hour long, especially on new fangames or modded stages. I used to do speedruns and had a few WRs before I became a TH-camr. I enjoy YT much more so it's well worth it. Having other people acknowledge that on someone else's comment section is simply awesome!
I like how you bring up having people mind their own business because others don't know your plans or your limitations. I work a full time programming job to come home to do videos. I often give up editing/thumbnail time so I can spend more time on the gameplay footage, the big draw of my channel. It also may seem lazy but this method can also be used to hire a professional artist in the future. Alot of behind the scenes type of stuff comes into play. This isn't even taking into account all the YT algorithms stuff .
I saw Sonic Central's comment here about being lumped into other groups which I definitely agree with. It's rather funny I actually started out as a generic gaming channel, called Overtime Gamer. My Sonic content got so many views compared to my other videos I decided to go only on Sonic content. I didn't even know what a Sonic Central or Blue Vivicity was at the time, I've seen maybe 1 or 2 of their videos before by recommendations. Just with how YT is designed we'd still end up in the same boat no matter who existed or not.
My channel started around a year before the grand flock of Sonic Mod channels. I still believe there's a group of friends that created a bunch of new Sonic mod channels at the exact same time for the sole purpose of making Sonic content for money. Which it is, what it is, I've moved past caring about it at this point but this is all stuff to keep in the back of your head. There's always more to this world (online and real world) than meets the eye.
Anyways that's a big enough essay from me, Pretty sick video again! :D

If I could relate to any comment on this video the most, it would be this one. I know the difficulty of working a programming job myself while balancing TH-cam. A lot of people don’t really fully understand everything that goes into the video creation and distribution process as well and they tend to oversimplify it. Not only that, but personally I prefer finding a quicker way to download cool mods that I experience for myself rather than hearing what someone thinks about it. Sometimes seeing creators like yourself combine multiple mods is itself making it more unique. Overall man, keep doing you Overtime! :)

Excellent video! I do agree that the over saturation of Sonic mod channels is practically inescapable, and people are basically confusing all these channels being run by the same person because they’re all so similar, however imo I do think that these channels have something to offer. Like, for example Sonic Central and Blue Vivacity for their amazing thumbnails and Sonic Overtime for his gameplay.
I joined the Sonic mod channels scene 2 years ago, as my inspiration was heavily from the legend Cobanermani456 and Sonic Central as I loved both of their content especially with Cobi being a childhood classic, and with my commentary not being very good (still to this day), I decided to go down the route where Sonic Central took his content with non-commentary videos, before I knew about this oversaturation. Nowadays my channel is an easy target as being unoriginal and I can see why, as some say it’s very similar to Sonic Central and Blue Vivacity.
Although, I think that this hate for these channels is unnecessary. All it is at the end of the day it’s just Sonic fans showcasing mods they want to showcase on their channel. Even if they showcase the same mod on the same day, it shouldn’t be something to be pissed about and write death threats. I think that people should upload whatever they want without having to deal with a bunch of hate for literally no reason. If you don’t like the video, stop watching it.
Anyway dude, this is my first time seeing one of your videos, and I’ll definitely be sticking around to see more content. Keep up the good work!

      No,no,no, just..... _NOOO!_
There is absolutely nothing unoriginal, about your content dude.
Your name is Sonic Beyond, for Chip's sake, I expect a lot from a name like that, just like the big 3.
Sonic Overtime = _we going overtime!_
Because he always goes hard on his gameplay after each vid.
Sonic Central will always = this is the place, he always has plenty to show.
Blue = uniqueness, he's very different from everyone else, and that's what makes him stand out.
Sonic Beyond will always = your going beyond yourself, not trying to be better than the next guy, but creating new and different content, that's very fitting to your tastes.
Never allow people nor yourself, to be put into a category of being called unoriginal, nobody, as a human being, is unoriginal.

  • @GottaBeFrank
    @GottaBeFrank ปีที่แล้ว +5

Mod creators dislike of channels making videos on their mods is taking me back to when I started my own mod videos. Time really flies.
I think the oversaturation of channels like these are from the fact that the barrier of entry isn't as high as someone would think it is. It also comes with the drawback of a lot of creators, in that specific niche, not doing anything to make them stand out, so you end up with a lot of similar videos, at various levels of quality.
To throw myself into this, I always recommend people to not start a no-commentary channel as it would be quite the uphill battle, when it comes to channel growth. What would a new creator have to offer in a no-commentary channel, that any already existing channel wouldn't have to offer? Commentary, editing, anything that adds the creator's personality goes a long way to stand out amongst the sea of similar videos. Tails' Channel once experimented with the idea of adding notes and edits in their recent mod videos. Some subtle and some not so subtle, which gave me hope for future mod gameplay channels. As you can tell, it didn't really go far, nor did it inspire others to do something similar, but it happens and it's not worth getting frustrated or sad over.
As for the titles and thumbnails, that's the TH-cam game. I'm not saying it's blaming a creator to resorting to clickbait or anything. Creators need to come up with something eye-catching with their content to get someone to click on it. Blue Vivacity and Sonic Central have been killing it for a long time and really understand what makes a clickable video. Clickable is not clickbait because clickbait is just a lie. As for the use of assets, yeah, asking for permission or finding some blanket permission for use of it is big. Those are other creators who go out of their way to make their art. This is coming from someone who made the mistake of not seeking permission or alternate options at the start. It's something worth warning about, rather than letting them make the same mistake. Once again, seek permission, use official assets, or commission art if you can.
The argument from some mod creators is fair. You pour all of this time and effort, but then there are TH-camrs profiting off showing it off, either in views or revenue. This is one that I thought about for a while, but never came up with a solution to. Do creators pay mod creators a portion of the revenue? What if the creator receives little revenue for one mod over another? What about creators who don't have monetization? Are they given the ok, or will there be some sort of gatekeeping? I gave up on this because it's obvious that answers will vary from person to person.
You make some great points as well. If anything, hopefully your comments and comments from others can motivate someone to break out of making a similar video in the sea of same-y mod videos. If not, then so be it. Like you said, it's not that deep.

For me it's moreso interesting to see how the landscape for how Sonic Fangames and mod content are presented has changed so drastically on TH-cam, and how it's changed from years gone by. I don't know how many of you were around for the Wii U days, but I really feel like Cobanermani456 was the forefather for alot of the methods that Sonic fancontent is represented today. While I think that for sure the space is oversaturated, it's cool to be able to pop into a Sonic Central or Blue Vivacity video every once and awhile and have a clean cut, well edited presentation of our favorite mods

Like Cell Stated: Don't hate the player, hate the game. Still tho, I still find it hard to understand why there's so much hate. Here's a thought: maybe it's because SEGA is so lenient with the fan community and they're jealous that their favorite franchises aren't the same. There's a reason I'm a Sonic Fan. It's because the community largely is a safe, welcoming environment versus other fanbases I've seen.

Thank you for this video. This was video I've wanted to do myself for years, but never did, because I've just completely lost all my passion into making videos. However, my video was going to be a rant of sorts, as I don't like these no commentary mod channels, which is ironic, because I used to be one myself. The original reason why I stopped making those videos was because my viewers kept asking me to use my voice in my videos, which I didn't feel comfortable with at the time and to an extent, I still don't. But the actual reason why I stopped making those videos is because I started to notice everyone else was doing the same thing and the more I kept seeing those videos in my recommended, the more it made me mad, because I was beginning to see just how lazy it all is and how these channels are growing at an alarmingly fast rate because of it. I guess you could say I was jealous as it made me upset how much time and effort I was putting into my videos and also editing my friend's videos, all whilst getting barely any views, let a lone subscribers, whilst these sonic mod channels are blowing up with content that takes no effort to make. But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. People clearly like these videos and who am I to criticize?

One thing I really appreciate about your videos, especially recently, is that you can say a whole lot in rather short form videos-- often under 10 or at least under 15 minutes. Videos that give a decent amount of things to think about and consider. That stands in contrast with some other creators that regularly make somewhat longer videos, but say less and repeat their points multiple times in either the same way or a slightly different way. Keep up the great work, dude.

Epic video as usal. interestingly I already have done what you suggested about making your own channel to showcase your own mods, and its been pretty fun. I already have 61 subscribers too, and it only took me like 7 years! WOW! I know, I know. Fully epic.
But anyways, even with a channel as small as mine, I've got some hate for copying, cuz I guess some of the videos I made were similar to other videos on youtube, or something like that. Which, I guess can be annoying just seeing the same type of videos all the time.
My solution now is pretty simple:
    1. I make videos about my own mods, this ensures that basically no one has the same video idea as me, at least usually.
    2. Nowadays, when I do make videos about other peoples mods, I end up combining mods cuz I find it a lot more fun, and even chaotic in a funny way. Plus, I don't see many other channels combining mods that much, so I think it helps me stand out.
    3. I have a list of all video ideas from my comments, and whatever ones I can do I try to do. For this one, it doesn't matter so much if it's unique, because I'm giving the viewer literally exactly what they ask for, so ya.
Also, in terms of the topic of permission, I get your points too, they all make a lot of sense to me, and I get the different view points for sure.
My solution is simple though, and hopefully people don't hate on me for it. Since I often upload videos every single day, I don't always have time to straight up reach out to mod creators and ask to use their mod in a video, so, I don't do that. What I do instead is use whatever mods in a video that I want to, and I also credit the creators in the description, usually leaving a link to their mod in the Mods Used section.
The other rule I have set for myself though, is that if a mod creator doesn't want their mod used in a video, then I'll usually take it down. I think the only exception to that might be if it was something really basic, or like, something I could just easily do myself anyways, then I might not. Or I might just do the same simple mod but myself, if that makes sense. Ya know, like simple cheat codes, character swaps, and those sorts of things. If I can do it myself, then I just would if someone didn't want me using their I guess version of that kind of mod.
But ya anyways, there's my thoughts on the matter. I do love modding channels a lot though, even ones that aren't mine! :O Though ya, it can all get pretty stale sometimes, but for me and all other creators, we just gotta try and keep things fresh I think, and be cool and chill with our fellow creators and fans alike!:)

The gap between Team Sonic Racing and Sonic Frontiers was enormous with nothing in-between and we still don't have anything about next games aside from rumors and Kishimoto's tweets. Comics also are monthly so there's nothing to talk about them for long periods of time. However fan games and mods are abundant, so there's more content to make out of them.

I kinda disagree on the point of modders not owning the IP; artists commonly draw almost exclusively characters not owned by themselves yet it’s still considered ethically necessary to credit their art when used, right? I see this as the exact same situation. I know these channels at least credit in their descriptions so I guess that’s fine, although I think it’d be better to throw in some space in the title/thumbnail mentioning the mod name and creator since, as you yourself said, a lot of these vids get traction based on those two elements alone. I guess people have different lines/limits - I think it’s stupid when people put a watermark on a simple meme so maybe that’s how others see mods. All good points. For me I think it kind of is a case by case thing. Like for example, I've done a lot of character swap mods in Sonic 06, but I don't really feel like I own those per sey. Like, if someone did their own character swap mod, I would have literally zero concern in terms of being credited, lol.
On the flipside though, I made a custom level pack for Super Monkey Ball a long while ago, and in that case, I care a bit more, since I actually 3d modeled my own custom stages and imported them into the game.
So ya, my thoughts anyways. Also, sorry for just using my own mods as an example, haha:P

This is funny since I had to unsubscribe from Blue Vicinity since he and Sonic Central would upload the same mod nearly an hour apart so I felt no need to do the subbed to the guy anymore. The videos felt the same with no commentary. Which was why during the time of Sonic Generation Mods cobain was my guy to watch since he talked at least lmao

On the one hand, it can't be helped, Sonic Tubers making similar videos, will always happen no matter what, outside of the occasional fan or mainline game, on the other hand, yes, mod creators should be credited for what they do, my friend Overtime does this all the time and Sonic Central, plus Blue.
True, Twitter drama is unnecessary, privacy is always the proper way to handle things, and I have seen some mod creators showcase their own content, on their own channel.
Well thought out video, I initially thought you were gonna talk down on them, I definitely was going to defend my friend S.O. (Sonic Overtime) if it were so, but this was one of those unique critiques about Sonic Tubers.
Not the narrow-minded, ones people make every now and then.
I never knew about the death threats though, now I know Game Apologist dealt with idiotic arguments over what is and what is not canon in some of his videos comment section, but these people have no lives!

Wouldn't be nice if SEGA made DLC additions to make a story that didn't drive you crazy?
Like a secrets mode , where uncover context that covers their errors.
I know they wouldn't do it correctly , but a fan can dream.

A lot of Sonictubers rely on being content farms to bring in views and attention, and often bank on the work of other modders and creators to do it. Not only do most channels not really do a good job at properly highlighting and crediting the creators (a lot of the time, they can just be buried in the description), but they also love to compare and and muddy their work with other mods and content. There's some mod channels out there which do things like add obnoxious reshade filter over everything, or milk the same mods multiple times with slight variation to how they're presented/different mods stacked on top of each other. This sort of behavior seems to downplay a lot of the people who actually make these things, turning everything that's made into a bunch of slush that blends in together, while at the same time is milked over and over again by several different channels. All this isn't helped by the fact some of these channels don't even really do a good job at showcasing some of these mods properly. If you want me to see a cool new Sonic model, how am I meant to properly see it if you keep drop dashing and boosting all over the place?
It's gotten to the point where people will use these fan works to make comparisons to totally different projects, and sometimes blackmailing and using clickbait to trick viewers into seeing something which it isn't. One extreme case I've noticed recently is a channel showcasing a "exclusive look" of a fan game, implying a special agreement between the parties to showcase a special preview of new content. The reality however is that no such agreement ever happened, and they instead showcased a leaked build of the project not meant for release. It would be more forgivable if it was properly labeled as such and shown for the sake of preservation, but instead, they worded it like it was a special preview to get more attention, which is not only pretty scummy, but gives a bit of a false expectation for the final project.
I also feel like with the audience Sonictubers have, there's sometimes a wasted opportunity to showcase and give attention to indie games and projects which may be inspired by the series, or even just other games in general shown off in events like SAGE. If there's any people who could absolutely use the attention and exposure Sonictubers can generate, it's people who actually wanna make a living off stuff. And yet despite this, these sorts of games never are really shown off unless they have a Sonic skin on top of it. Games like Freedom Planet 2 and Spark the Electric Jester 3 both released last year, and have Sonic influences, but are also products that stand on their own and have developers behind them who could benefit from a wider reach. But even with these 2 big releases, I've barely seen any major Sonictubers even mention them. I suppose that it's not worth a showcase unless it has the blue hedgehog slapped on top of it. Then again, if some of these channels don't do a great job at showcasing fan works, I'm not sure how well they'd be able to handle full on indie projects.

I’m kind of tired with seeing this “content farm” thing. So many people say it and it just screams pessimism. Why can it never be that someone creates videos because they GENUINELY love doing it and Sonic, this hobby in general, and sharing community creations around? This channel was created out of passion for this franchise. Are there creators that probably do this solely for monetary gain, and for “content farm” purposes? Probably. But you can’t paint everyone with the same brush. This doesn’t even just apply to the Sonic fandom - it can apply to any niche on TH-cam.
I always try and show community creations off properly, and ALWAYS credit the author(s) - I leave the mod manager links too. If I have ever messed up credit or left someone uncredited, it absolutely wasn’t on purpose. I’m trying a lot of new things on my channel and mods just happen to be one of many things I’ve done here.
I respect your viewpoint on this matter, and I am trying to improve my content day by day. Doing this channel is a constant learning experience.
      Have a good day. 👍

I'm not sure how to respond to some of these things tbh, but as far as the fan games thing goes, I have my own thoughts from personal experience.
I think that mods, and fan games are in a pretty separate category tbh. So, like in my case for example, some channel creators might not be sure if they should mix and match the two, or just stick to mods. Heck, maybe some channels just do fan games, who knows.
In my channels case though, I just do what I feel like doing, or what my commenters suggest for me to do. So, in other words, if someone hit up my comments and asked me to showcase a fan game on my channel, I'd almost 100% of the time do it, (as long as it worked on my computer.) It might take some time before I got around to it, but these days a keep a list of all commenter suggestions. Also, I don't see a point in not doing a suggestion unless It's something I just really don't like, or if its something that I don't know how to do (been a few of those, lol.)
Anyways, there's my thoughts, so ya:P

Especially since someone like Fadel for example also regularly covers mods, only difference is he does commentary on them.
Does he get hate for that? He really doesn't
This isn't meant as hate towards Fadel, just that ppl are hypocritical

really that what most people want now from mod channels is for someone to commentate (like cobanermani456) or try something fresh and new. He definitely does the same things that modtubers do, but that commentary and hype does bring I suppose some fresh air, compared to most of the sonic modtubers that are the same with very few differences.
