I’m glad Iki showed up. I was confused last year because Tom have it such a glowing review yet it didn’t show up on the top 100. I really enjoy this game.
I feel like I’m with Zee, maybe QE is a good game but it’s hard to feel hyped about it when the only thing anybody says about it is “it’s funny that numbers are high”

It’s really a don’t knock it until you try it game. I too wasn’t that excited about it until somebody bought it to our meetup, I laughed so hard that I got chest pains.
Our game was so out there that google wasn’t enough, we went up to googleplex. Then there’s a guy who scored no points except for the zeros as he didn’t get it and thought “9 trillion” was a lot of money. We had to look up the units and write them out. I look forward to trying the expansion which fixes the only gripe that I have with it.

I played it once. The big numbers weren’t a thing in my play. They started in the hundreds and ended in the 10 thousands.
For me the game is about the the people fighting for second in a way. The person in first probably spent the most, so they will be eliminated. But then how do you win enough bids to get the points to win without the guy with the most debt driving up the price so you will owe more than him.
Having played QE a couple of times. It does have it's moments and it is mostly a social experiment more than a solid board game. The expansion is very nice and you should play with it. Makes the game less repetitive. And the numbers go as high as the players take it. In the last game we were talking about tens of millions. But I have played it to way higher in the past. It all depends on the group... It is an ok game and it can go a little long, but I wouldn't mind playing it again especially with the expansion.

Who knew Mike could be so right! I feel i agree with him more than the others. Love Letter is right up there for me too. It's just simple fun with lots of laughs.
Some folks at the dice Tower love to say “ that’s a player problem not a game problem“
In Zee’s own example that he gives for Thunderbirds, he’s suggesting a move to another player and then, proceeds to say something to the effect of that’s the whole game.
I don’t like cooperative games that are just one big puzzle we’re all trying to solve. I want my own turn. I wish we would stop trying to pretend that that’s the players fault
Some cooperative games just aren’t for some people because of the mechanics involved in the game, not because someone is an “alpha gamer” because the game incentivizes them to suggest moves to other players
Tom said that the popularity track is too important in Scythe but lots of the competitive community uses popularity more as a resource instead of trying to move up in lots of the stronger strategies

Semi competitive might feel this way but it's not always the best path. The longer the game goes the better.
The real issue is faction imbalance
Echoing what others have already said, I too am frustrated by the lack of chapters/timestamps. Very much missed in a long-form video such as this.

I have Rise of Tribes but haven't played it yet. I was waiting to get the expansion because online, people were saying it was boring without it. Recently, on Board Game Geek's Facebook page, I mentioned this and multiple people said to play it because it's great.
Grand Austria Hotel remains one of my favorite games of all time.
Tell them Mike! Masmorra, as cooperative (including solo) is a light, fast and fun dungeon crawler, playable with kids 10+ due to the cute theme. As a competitive, it is Arcadia Munchkin, we never play this mode. The action selection system is also top. Warmly recommended, it should have a place on a top100
Maybe a Top 100 game that doesn't live up to it's potential!
I have the KS Deluxe version of Grand Austria Hotel and it looks really nice.
Masmorra is a great coop game! 👏 I am so glad Mike keeps championing this game.
Targi just got a small 10th y anniversary expansion with upgraded components. Some cool new cards to throw into the mix and a great opportunity to get it back to the table.
Its Surprising how much is in Paper Tales for the amount of components it is

I disagree about Blood Rage’s “flaw” of knowing the cards. It’s not substantially different than a pro player destroying a new player in Dominion, Unmatched and countless other card-driven games. You mitigate this by providing a good teach along with some tips, but players with similar skill levels will have a great time.
The game that I think of where a new player stands zero chance against a player who has simply played a couple of times (never mind a pro) is Food Chain Magnate.
Once you discover that Scythe is more of a race game, it changes the way you play. I have ended the game in 12 turns with the right combos. The probelm I have is the game balance. Red and Yellow need changes so they are not so overpowered. I recommend not using the expansion mats either, innovative is OP and Militant is hard to figure out the efficiency.
War of the ring is great they also reprinted the expansions and a new one is coming so that could have to do with it

Supposedly a reprint of Asante should be coming at some point. Maybe a "big" box with everything?

Have to say I love Rising Sun much more than Bloodrage. The drafting seemed like I needed to research before I played it and felt I was out of the game almost immediately. No one is really out in Rising Sun and the mechanics are more fluid
Battleore 2nd Edition is amazing!!
If anyone is thinking of getting into miniature war games but isn't sure, wants to save a tonne of money, and/or hates rule edition changes, grab a copy of the base game.
Fun to play with newbies or experienced players as long as they're into the fantasy army vs fantasy army theme.
It really does need a reprint. I have everything for it. Heck I have multiple copies! But, scalpers be damned, I want others to be able to enjoy it too!
Really hoping to play it with my son when he's old enough 😊 But I also enjoy a solo variant if he's not into it.

I also prefer Rising Sun over Blood Rage. Rising Sun is in my top 20s while Blood Rage is in my top 40. Ankh unfortunately is outside my top 100 (barely).
I love the trilogy. RS was my favourite game of all time until usurped by Ankh, BR close behind the two

The combat system and length kills Rising Sun for me. IMO Bloodrage is 100x better!

Just bought a second game from the Abyss universe.
Tom should make it public what Overpowered cards he needs. I only have a starter deck I got when I was a teen. So I probably don't have anything for him, but maybe someone does.
1:07:21 Paper Tales (Zee's 63) is a game I've tried mostly because he's talked about it so much. I got the app and have played it a bunch of times-trying to figure it out and trying to like it. In the end, it just blows my mind how someone could have enjoyed this… or even called this a finished design. I'm glad Zee likes it, and I'm happy that there are different games for different people, but so many of the decisions in this game seem to have been made to suck the fun out. Compare this to something like Res Arcana (which Zee also likes), which gives you so many opportunities to do cool combos, build up, and generally have a good time.

I don’t get why people like Teotihuacan. On my first play I thought it was a great game but I quickly realised that there is a single winning strategy, just build the pyramid. Decorating it and doing the houses just doesn’t compete.
I've seen many fans that are vocal about their favorite games. But I've yet to witness angrier fans, who can't stand even the minuscule criticism, than Agricola fans.
I understand the nostalgia, but damn! You _do_ know that it's just a game, right?

To have Tom's back: I prefer Rising Sun over Blood Rage. Honestly, Blood Rage is the lowest of the trilogy for me, but I do love all three.

Millenials who grew up with LotR are now spending more money in board games. Bada-bing, bada-boom, War of the Ring resurgence.
War of the ring is also an excellent bathtub game which is very on trend right now.
Hall of the Mountain King was a disappointment- bought it last month on the back of last year’s top 100. Agree cascading cards is good but the rest feels cluttered and unintuitive and not very interesting
