    Suddenly, Fairy Godmother granting wishes

  • @Sataandagi96

    One of Disney's earlier works, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, explained well, without voices even, where Asha made a mistake. It's not necessarily about the wishes only partially being granted, but the power Magnifico's magic holds. Combine his magic with a vague wish and disaster could strike. Give people back their wishes, some might pursue pure thoughts, and others create chaos and destruction.
    Also: Magnifico had a point. He was never secretive with what he offered. And what he offered was a Utopia for people to live in. Rosas was definitely not filled with unhappy people. The people gave their wishes to Magnifico, knowing that they might not get granted. Yet they still lived their lives to the fullest, protected by him in a country that gave them everything. And it still wasn't enough. His "villain" song is almost like Mirabelle's want-song for me.
    Magnifico was a benevolent and gentle king who treated people with kindness and generosity. He was introduced as such and the movie didn't work a lot on showing him being anything else but that. There's just a sudden 180° turn on his character and then there's an evil book possessing him. Poof, he gets thrown into the dungeon and suddenly Asha is the new Magnifico with magic she cannot even control.
    Yen Sid better send out his keyblade warriors, because hell to the no.
    Magnifico deserved better. He was not a villain. And the people of Rosas are shite. Especially his wife who'm he clearly loved dearly. But the star was cute.

    Honestly, the ending kind of bothered me. I didn't like that they decided to make Asha a fairy godmother. Like, wasn't the whole point that no one person should have that kind of power? Sure she's nice, but so was Magnifico when HE started granting wishes. And why, after all those years of marriage, was the queen not more broken up about her husband's corruption? I thought they were going to make her a Twist villain when I first watched this. Like, there was going to be this big reveal (post-credit) that SHE would eventually become the evil queen from Snow White, and Magnifico her magic mirror. But overall, yeah, the movie was pretty 'meh' at best.

    • @FG-tu4fq
      @FG-tu4fq 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Magnifico was never nice. Him granting people's wishes is a nice and generous thing he does to make himself look good. If he was as *nice* as Asha, he would have returned and even granted all of their wishes. It's plain and obvious that he is a narcissist who runs his kingdom on false hope so the masses can depend on him.
      Asha becoming a fairy godmother is to help people achieve their wishes is like how Star helps her achieve her own wish of returning everyone's wishes back.

    • @jerrythecartoonist
      @jerrythecartoonist 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@FG-tu4fq I more so blame the writing, but we don't know what Magnifico was like BEFORE he learned magic and started granting people's wishes. Obviously, the power went to his head later down the line, but he still built an entire kingdom to let people of all colors and genders live without paying rent. He never discriminated, and he clearly cared about the opinions/feelings of his wife. When she asked him not to use the book the first time he listened. He only used it later because of his paranoia and trauma from whatever happened to him in the past. And the dude kind of had a point about not wanting to grant every wish. Not everyone needs to have their wish granted. Some people are super messed up. I'm not trying to say he doesn't have toxic traits or even that he's a good person, but I just don't believe he's that evil. Which, in my opinion, makes him a bad villain. Heck, the only time he turns truly evil is AFTER he uses the dark magic, which they make very clear, CONTROLS HIM. So you could argue that most of his actions after that point aren't even his. Being sucked into a mirror seemed like overkill, he just needed therapy. That's why this rant is being sponsored by...Better Help. Nah, jk lol.
      As for Asha, her whole point was that people shouldn't need someone else's magic to make magic happen in their lives. Which I was 100% behind...until they gave her a magic wand. To me, that kind of negates the whole point of the message, ya know? Because weirdly, it's almost like they're saying that you can't make your dreams come true WITHOUT some sort of magic. They dropped one wish-granter for another. They're in the same position they started in. It's a snake eating its own tail...And hey, I understand it's a kid's movie. But c'mon, kids are way smarter than we give them credit for.

    I watched a couple videos on the easter eggs in this movie. As this was the Disney Animation film for Disney's 100th Anniversary, they tried to tie in something from all the previous Disney Animation movies. Some are obvious like the Bambi reference. Some are less obvious like Asha's seven friends each having traits from the Dwarves in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The title "Wish" in Wish comes from the, "When You Wish Upon A Star" song, which the song from Disney's 2nd animated film, Pinocchio (1940), and is also the song that is plays for the Disney animated logo. In one video, they theorise that Magnifico being trapped in the mirror, he becomes the Mirror Mirror character from Snow White who the Evil Queen asks who is the fairest. And that Asha becomes a Sorcerer, or even the first Fairy Godmother, hinting at the reference of using the stick as a magic wand, like the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella. As you said in your reaction, Easter Egg the Movie.

    It's so weird how they imply that Magnifico has a tragic backstory, and that a lot of his resentment comes from his people only caring about his wish-granting abilities, while taking him fro granted... While also pushing him as this irredeemable tyrant. Some scenes want the audience to sympathize with him, while others make him out to be completely unsympathetic.
    I also don't like how Asha was completely okay at the beginning of the movie with everyone forgetting their wishes once they gave them to Magnifico. She even tells the new arrivals to the city that they "Forget without regret", but the moment it concerns her grandfather's wish, only then does she consider it a problem.
    And her grandfather's wish? To inspire people by playing music in public. Something he ends up doing at the end of the movie anyway, just by picking up a lute and starting to play. Why did he make that his wish? He was perfectly able to accomplish that on his own.

  • @Voided_Ghost118

    To be honest, i think it was Asha's fault that Magnifico became evil. I know everyone has their own opinions and i totally respect that, but i don't like Asha, she just came across to me as whiny (especially after Magnifico voicing his opinion on it) she completely ignored him when he offered her the apprenticeship, and the only thing she was focused on was her grandfather's wish. I do think it was sweet of her to ask the king for a chance to get her grandfather's wish granted, but i think she could've found a much more respectful way of going about it. Concerning the king though, i definitely do agree with him needing to ask more questions about Saba's wish, but I feel like the wish being "too vague" was a pretty good reason to not grant it, he had no idea what Saba was going to do with the power to "inspire the next generation".
    But the ending though.... that was just sad. When you're dealing with forbidden magic that... well... practically destroys the user, there's NO way that a town square of CIVILLIANS singing a song that they shouldn't even know will beat forbidden magic, that just makes no sense. Magnifico was just trying to help protect his people and they treat him like that!? (aka, whining about how they want him to grant more wishes or something like that) I would go ballistic if that was me.
    Like i said before, i respect everyone's opinions, but i side with Magnifico, they could've at least treated him a little bit better than they did.

      Same here. Asha's entitled attitude helped with nothing and she had no right to tell him how to do his job.
      I think Magnifico is more of a good guy than some people give him credit for. He's like a strict teacher: ya hate him in the moment but later on, you realize that he had a point and wasn't as bad as you thought

    • @kristinahuchison2511
      @kristinahuchison2511 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Same. I legit don’t understand how anyone could say this film is underrated or overhated. I like Asha’s design but that’s basically it. She’s honestly the most unlikable character aside Valentino because of how entitled and bratty she becomes the moment Magnifico refuses to grant her grandfather’s wish. While I understand her point of why he doesn’t just give the wishes back, its still his kingdom and he’s got a pretty good yet complicated reason for why he doesn’t grant certain wishes. Heck, he doesn’t even know who Sabino is before meeting Asha, and Asha naively assumes ALL wishes are good and pure, never thinking about what some people might really want. There’s always going to be bad people wishing for awful things. What infuriates me the most is Asha saying “I know I’m not wrong” and the movie points out three separate times that her beliefs aren’t selfish or she’s doing this all to make Sabino’s wish come true. Asha NEVER learns anything and is granted a magical wand in the end?? She’s going to be granting wishes right and left nilly willy without any thought of the consequences, and there are movies based on “be careful what you wish for” and how wishes can be a monkey’s paw scenario. Heck, Aladdin was basically about the consequences wishes have and Aladdin shouldn’t rely on magic to win Jasmine’s love.
      Honestly I wish (pun intended) we got Asha’s original personality where she was actually more timid and reserved, but does care for others and finds her voice in the story

    I read somewhere once that when writing a story you always need to respect status if you want the world to be believable.
    And this movie completely fails at it by making everyone so relaxed around royalty. Like you get the "funny" akwardness occasionaly and a few people bowing, but apartfrom that you don't feel any sense of authority these people might have over others. When Asha talks to them it's like she's just talking to distant family memebers.
    And I can't even say that it's a smaller kingdom so everything is a bit more relaxed, which is why everyone trust the king and gives their wishes away,but it just doesn't work from that angle either.
    For people to do that he either needs to enough authority or enough charisma and the movie gave us neither

    They definitely didn't quite think the story through and overall kind of feels rushed for the 100 year thing :(
    If it wasn't for the overtly "evil" delivery from the king he literally makes sense and the whole protagonists journey is awful and wrong >

    To me, this movie is good, but Disney has gone to the habit where we have to think everything we watch, so if they try to make something very simple, we think about every little thing.

      Magnifico is an almost beat-for-beat parallel of American capitalism, and people are afraid to condemn him because it would mean re-examining things they're comfortable with in real life. Just like how people give up their wishes at 18 in Rosas, people give up their dreams in real life to serve a company that doesn't care about them. Wish is way smarter and more subversive than anyone realizes and people who say Magnifico is actually good are making the movie's point for it.

    A great soundtrack trapped by some of the laziest, much reductive screenwriting I've ever seen from Disney. They were so concerned with making references to their past works that they forget to make THIS movie something of worth, which uh... well, take that as you will as far as the state of the Disney company and its affiliated properties (Marvel, Star Wars, etc) as a whole.

    Wish is one of my personal favorites from Disney alongside with Peter Pan and The Princess and the Frog. Love the homages to Disney’s past, the storybook animation style, soundtrack and the message of making our own dreams come true. It may not be a masterpiece or one of Disney’s bests, but it holds a very special place in my heart no matter what.

    While the movie is good, it doesn’t exactly scream Disney’s 100th anniversary movie…which is why, for me at least, it felt underwhelming.
    It was more like a movie they’d release on any other day and was a bit watered down compared to some of their recent releases, sure some of their recent animated releases were a tad underwhelming as well but they felt fully executed…where as this one felt incomplete, it was like they had some concepts and aspects they wanted to add to this movie but couldn’t.
    Post Research Edit: okay, after some researching, I can say with confidence that my opinion on this movie has changed significantly.
    First things first, I found out that the original concept for this movie was original going to be a love story.
    The star was going to be a shapeshifting Disney Prince who would help Asha, the main character, and become her love interest.
    The king and queen in this movie were originally going to be a Disney villain power couple who’s daughter would’ve been Asha, with the king and queen having both separate Disney villain songs and a duet villain song.
    And speaking of songs…both Asha and her love interest, the star who was originally a shapeshifting prince, would’ve had a duet called “at all costs” a song that is sung by Asha’s voice actress Ariana DeBose and the Star’s original voice actor Chris Pine. For those of you who want to listen to this song, it’s still on the official soundtrack of this movie, it’s a demo song.
    I then went to social media, TH-cam, Tiktok, Instagram, Twitter (also known as “X”.), etc…and I found thousands upon thousands of talented artists who made animations, animatics, redesigns, rewrites, fan made storyboards, song rewrites, fan made songs, etc. A MAJORITY OF WHICH was for the original concept of the movie.
    They had made rewrites of all the songs and the plot, made fan made songs for certain characters and villain songs for both the king and queen of this movie and fan made reprises of certain songs, they redesigned certain characters ( Asha, the star boy love interest, the king, the queen, etc…all of which are better than the original designs we got in this movie.), they’ve made Animatics and Storyboards for both the songs (both original and fan made) and showing how they think Asha and the star boy would’ve met, these artist went all out for a concept that wasn’t even used…
    After researching so much and seeing all the things I’ve seen in regards to this movie, I can definitely tell why it not only feels incomplete…but why so many people say this movie isn’t good. Disney could’ve had a movie that would’ve skyrocketed and meet the audience’s standards of what a 100th anniversary film should be…and they fumbled HARD…especially when you take into consideration the countless upon countless Animatics, redesigns, fan made storyboards, etc on TH-cam, Tiktok, Instagram, Twitter (or as it’s known now “X”.) made by very talented artists who saw the potential of the original movie concept…this could’ve been the movie of the year and all it was reduced to was some get rich quick, watered down, money grab…although I have hopes Disney will start listening to the public one day and start make movies that won’t feel the way this movie did, all I can say now is that it would take all kinds of luck for this movie to even be nominated.

    It might not be the best disney animated film, but it still did well, especially amongst the young girls. Honestly, when I heard this film was a tribute to celebrate 100 years of disney animation, I knew there wasn't going to be anything new. Like with Die Another Day, a tribute film to celebrate 40 years of James Bond, they were going to tell a story that followed the old formula and put many easter eggs alomg the way. If it wasn't a tribute film, I would have agreed with the criticism of it being too generic, but because it was, I understood why, so I wasn't surprised. I haven't seen the film in it's entirety, but I have seen clips, and based on those, I would recommend this film highly because Chris Pine did a great job playing the villian and the woman who plays Asha, who won the academy award for West Side Story, has a beautiful singing voice.

    If you're in the mood for something different, I recommend a cult classic called 'They Call Me Bruce.' Its about a really naive Korean immigrant who's main selling points are his noodles, made from special Chinese flour and that he looks like Bruce Lee. His boss, who's been having trouble with kung fu FBI agents gets the mistaken idea that 'Bruce' is a kung fu master and sends him on a delivery to their big boss as a guard...telling him its flour so he can make his noodles for the head hancho.

    I love this film. This has to be in like Top 10 Favorite Disney films. Off topic, Lilo is voiced by the same girl from the Ring. Both movies came out the same year, just months apart. What’s your favorite Easter egg. My favorites are When Magnifico Turns into the magic Mirror from Snow White,(Kinda Confirming the Disney shared universe.) I like how Asha’s Friends are based on the 7 dwarves. And How Asha Becomes the Fairy godmother from Cinderella. I love the concept art. But I would have liked the Film Either Way. I’m a Disney Fan. But I like what we got. TL;DR. 1:00 I love sleeping Beauty I Would dance with my Dad to Once Upon a dream. It’s kinda hard to listen to it. Since my Dad is not here.😶 The Animation on that Movie is Stunning. This and Sleeping beauty have the same wide screen. 5:13 Dang! 5:25 82 years later. 8:31 I was 11 going on 12 when My dad passed.😐 9:05 Good Point.

    As someone who saw this in theaters and was trailing it the second they whispered it's concept, I actually quite enjoyed the movie. I honestly think people have a problem with the animation because they just came off of Encanto and then did this, but what people don't understand is that this animation style is actually something they've never done before and neither has anyone else (as far as I know about the anyone else part). It's supposed to be like watercolor, 3D painted over with 2D and to have that moving portrait like they did with Sleeping Beauty. They put in a lot and for a first time go around, I think the animation was quite well done for a first try. Also, this movie was being made during the worst times, COVID, shut downs, people leaving the studio, it just literally had the worst kind of timing possible. I truly believe they wanted to make this movie work, but the pressure of not having her fall in love with a star shift shaper (which was the original concept and they scrapped it bc they didn't want everyone coming for them for another love story) and the pressure of this being in their 100th year I think just got the better of them and there were mistakes made. I knew what the core of the movie was about before going in. It's the entire studios concept of making a Wish upon a star and Wish is actually basically the origin story of all Disney movies (not making that up, it's in their art concept book that she predates everyone bc she originates the idea). I would love for them to remake this movie only because there was a lot of character depth and plot development that was hinted at but never fully developed, so if they remake it, now with the time and people and solid idea, I would definitely watch it. But I would watch this too, it's like you said, it wasn't great, it wasn't bad, it was fine.

    I admit the songs were good, but the plot of the story was a bit iffy to me. I completely side with Magnifico when he said the grandpa’s wish was too vague. He is obviously trying to do what is best for the kingdom and doing his best to make the people happy and they all just have to be so selfish. I feel like they only came to Rosas because they heard of a King that grants wishes. If he was an ordinary king with no magic abilities I think he would only have half of the population
