    I don't think I've seen such a wide variety of car culture in one video. Bikes, tuners, supercars, rally cars, vintage cars. I love it. Cameron's 240Z is really sweet. Looking at the pictures at it on WheelWell, you can tell he put a lot of time into it. Looks beautiful with the combination of the black wheels and the grey paint.

    I had a 1981 Datsun 280 ZX, and on the back it said Datsun on one side, and Nissan on the other.
    I was working in the back alley as a contractor when these two enormous hillbillies came up to hassle me, actually beat the crap out of me , because back then a lot of people thought the imported cars were stealing jobs.
    I was so rattled, I hopped in the Z and started up the highway with these hillbillies right behind me in a pickup truck.
    By third gear I was doing 70 and by fourth gear, I was doing a hundred ten.
    I just waved goodbye through the T top, as I left them in the dust.

    I dont know whats going on with Matt or this car but the steering is really only heavy when youre stopped or at very low speeds. A grown man should not have an issue turning above probably 10mph lol. Next time youre back in CT come take my daily driver 240Z for a one take

      If you have ever auto crossed a 240Z with wide wheels than you'd know how much effort it takes. It looks like the steering was light until he started cornering. Which is normal.

      Yes, there is something not right with the car it seems. Is the steering rack an un-powered version of the 280ZX one. That would certainly mess up one's ability to steer.

    Great video! I once owned a 1970 240Z and it was a scream to drive! Unfortunately the thin doors kept freezing in winter so I had to crawl through the hatch to get to the drivers seat. The window crank broke so I had to use a set of vice grips to turn the stem inside the door panel. Also the holes in the floorboards got so big the floor mats would flap as I drove down the highway! In the end it wouldn't even go up on a hoist because the frame would start to buckle but it was fun to drive before it rusted into the ground.

    I have a 78 280 with coil overs, sits about 3" off the ground (not stanced, track set-up), with 225/50/16"s and it's easy to steer one-handed above 10 MPH, something is amiss in his steering geometry for it to be that difficult. Try the bump steer correction inserts.

  • @415s30
    @415s30 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a 71 with triples, the stock steering wheel helps, it looks like he put a small wheel on, less leverage. Mine doesn't feel heavy. I wrapped my wheel with handle bar cork and then put a stitched leather wrap over it to get a fatter grip, the original is so thin, but you need the larger wheel, less turning of the wheel in a place like that canyon is nicer.

  • @rhyssimpson3839

    3:06 Matt I think thats mainly because its carbureted and tuned well, I've had a couple of carbureted firebirds with 350's and one with a 327 with a solid lifter cam. You'd snap the throttle and if the timing was perfect and the accelerator pump shot was right on along with the carb being tuned well then that sucker should rev up and down real quick and hard. You'll often find that the case with high compression carbureted engines, just a thought though maybe I'm wrong.

  • @chrissorreda4982
    @chrissorreda4982 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This car is TASTEFULLY done. There're a lot of 240's that are either fast show cars/stance, or like road course cars that doesn't look 'clean' like this.

  • @scottieray
    @scottieray 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Modern sports cars, you can square off a corner...fly in, brake hard, turn, fire out. On these older sports cars with manual everything you pretty much have to anticipate the corner and arc through the turn. Very interesting ride!

  • @F1jones
    @F1jones 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Back in the early 80s a high school friend of mine had a 72 240z that was converted similar to this one. It had the 2.8 from either the 280z or 280zx, I don't remember. I know it had the mated 5 speed transmission, so I think that would point to the 280zx being the donor. He also had the wider tires that this example had. For its day, the thing was a beast. Gorgeous in every detail, I wanted it so bad and my friend eventually wanted to sell.
    My mom and her boyfriend were convinced there was no way a 17 year old should be driving that sort of car, that it would draw the wrong attention from the local cops, etc. I ended up settling for a '67 Mustang with a 289 and 4 speed that could be out-dragged by 8 year old Celicas, and which was rusted throughout, as we later learned. The Datsun was bulletproof, but 2200 lbs of 1972 Japanese steel only buys you so much build quality. In either case, both did seem relatively used and fragile, hard to believe either car would only be considered mildly used in this day and age. Shows the long term quality that we now enjoy which is built into even the cheapest cars.
    Years after graduation I learned that my friend sold the car to his younger brother, and it was still running strong. I have never let my mom live that decision down, and I probably never will. I'll admit she was right about a lot, but not that time!

    He makes it look so difficult. I have a 280z and the steering isn't that hard.

    • @cesartapia610
      @cesartapia610 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Random Precision Does it make less power than the 240z? There are a lot of 280zx's that go significantly cheaper, and I'm thinking about getting one.

    • @HighFlyingZombie
      @HighFlyingZombie 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it doesn't. If you watch the video again he says that he has the engine from a 280z in his 240z because you can get more power out of it. But a 280zx is not the same as a 280z.

    • @cesartapia610
      @cesartapia610 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the help, but I feel I am not quite sure about the diference. How is the zX dissimilar?

    • @HighFlyingZombie
      @HighFlyingZombie 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 280ZX was a complete redesign. You're going to have to do some research. Just google 280z then google 280zx.

    • @fuckgoogle4704
      @fuckgoogle4704 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Cesar Tapia some feel the zx looked sleeker, it is wider, and longer. However from the purist view the car devolved from sports car to blvd cruiser. It was overweight and bloated compared to the original.

    Nice! Love me some old Datsuns. I don't think no power steering is that big a deal. No power brakes is horrible though. Can't stand not having power brakes. Anyway....love to see this car. Yet another car that's on my list.

    • @Lafaa123
      @Lafaa123 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +justicegundam1000 He means when pulling out the clutch it bites at an early point on that car, the more you have to pull the clutch out to start moving the later the bite point

    I have a 71 240z and it does give you feedback and it takes some Force to turn it but I've never heard somebody complain about it so much ever.... his alignment must be off or something. I have to 255/40 17 in the front and 275/40 17 in the rear. the only time it's a pain to turn is parking doing 2 miles an hour in a parking lot etc... maybe I'm just used to it I've been driving it for 15 years.

    i love these old datsuns, i want to get one and put it up around 300-400 hp, whether that be on the stock motor or with a swap, put in a rool cage, rework the suspension and some how convert the front end to a c10 skylines, which is more optional but i think it would look really bad ass to do so

    Yo is it really that hard to turn the wheel on these kind of cars without power steering? I'm thinking about getting one but this guy makes it seem like the hardest thing ever with all the grunts and whining.

    • @dann4262
      @dann4262 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      no not even. this guy was exaggerating way to much!! when your drive faster the steering wheel gets more loose. i have a 280z by the way.
