Guess I’m from a different generation , and have to beg to differ with people’s comments stating the plane didn’t loop. At time frame 2:00 the big gal loops !
Absolutely fantastic! I've flown many times on Hercs in the military and they're as incredible as you see in this vid - a fantastic airplane, and many thanks to the designers, builders and pilots and crews, they always brought us home!
Why do you say that? With light fuel, no cargo, operating within parameters ... should be no problem. If Boeing can roll a 707 ... aviationweek.com/blog/707-flight-testing-and-not-talking-about-rolls-1956 and Bob Hoover can do airshow maneuvers on one engine, I'm sure a Herc can perform some aerobatics.
Flew from Ft Lee Virginia to CamRhan Bay, Vietnam in one of these via California, Hawaii, Wake, Guam and Phillipines. Took about 43 hrs. I think. Hard to remember exact numbers from 1966. Glad to see they are still flying and proving their worth!
Paging Mr. Johnson, Mr. "Tex" Johnson, please come to the red courtesy phone. This sold a lot of 707's for Boeing. Hope it does the same for Lockheed. Awesome flying demo.
I was studying the video to see if it was a simulator. No signs of that. Very impressive. The pilot really knew how to showcase the aircrafts capabilities.
Amazing to see the old Hercules still going strong after all these years. It's been landed on an aircraft carrier . Landed and taken off in an American football stadium. ..
1, the plane wouldn't be allowed over the crowd, so couldn't fly over the camera. 2, the angle of the wing looked level at the top of the loop before the roll out. Either way, very impressive.
wow that was awesome i guess they call her super for a reason my grandfathers favorite in the AF was the 130 and he still likes planes and airshows he would love this video
That's BAD ASSNESS right there! The brass kahoonas for this stunt extend from flight crew all the way back to the drawing board engineer. I would have bet money (and lost!) that that particular plane could not perform such a maneuver. Or those stepped climbs - AWESOME! Thumbs up for posting this, two thumbs up for the stunt.
Allmmmmmooostt a real loop. He bailed on it towards the end. 90 degrees off original heading at the end. More like a HUGE a huge barrel role. Everyone inside definitely getting negative g time though. Fun. Glad he didn’t break the wing like that firefighter C130 did a few years back.
Perhaps you refer to the C-130A which crashed in 2002 when cracks in the wing spar caused the wing to fail. An Airworthiness directive was issued on all C-130A aircraft detailing the problem and inspections required. None of which apply to brand new production LM-100Js.
I'm surprised they allowed it at all these days in our Wet Lefty- Liberal England (at least in the North) , but just a fabulous plane and love to see its still a viable buy !
Excellent. In spite of the politicized commenters on TH-cam, who wrongly portray the super maneouverability displays of the Sukhois and Migs as useless circus stunts, this type of apparently useless display has a significant value. Just like Raptors doing Cobras; Ospreys and Harriers hovering, flying sideways, backwards and bowing to the spectators; and helicopters doing loops, this Hercules displays special abilities that open the door to new possibilities. Not that it will be looping around; but as a gunship it will have excellent agility for a cargo truck. That’s the whole point of all these “crazy” displays: to show possibilities for new capabilities. The loop was a classic loop abandoned at its last 1/4. It entered wings level, topped and dived wings “level” and recovered banking away. Very nice. If you use QuickTime, you can follow it by clicking second by second. This pilot is a true professional who, obviously learned the lessons from the accidents of a B-52 at Fairchild AFB and a Nimrod in a Toronto Air Show. Both, piloted by crowd pleasers, performed low altitude wing-overs, stalled and had no room to recover. I saw the Nimrod perform the stunt twice before the crash. On both occasions, when he reached the top of the maneouvre, his speed was so low that I (as a pilot) experienced the proverbial strong and sickening sensation of my testes sharply and literally raising to my throat. I was scared. This Hercules pilot wisely kept one eye on his speed/angle of attack as can be seen in his smart way of quickly reaching a safe display altitude, by steep climbing and lowering the nose to regain safe speed (zoom climbing). At no point during his display, my “gut indicator” was triggered. It was pure joy! Kudos.
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Capt speaking, we will interrupt our (boring) automated flight to make this a little more... fun! So please relax and enjoy the art of hand-flying! Then, looping and also zero-to-negatives G’s came up!.... amazing, tks for posting!
It’s not like that has been done before but that size of plane wow Beyond impressive and I saw a comment that the pilot had balls of steel I think that’s an understatement
John K Lindgren i’m sorry I offended you put your big boy pants on and get over it was it 100% polite know but it wasn’t foul go find yourself a safe space and a coloring book and some coloring crayons And go see your counselor you’ve got to be kidding me the whole pie in my statement was that maneuver is not new but with that size of plain extremely impressive and for a pilot to do that yeah they would see how what I said and not offend you being a man oh wait that’s sexist
A buddy of mine destroyed his back during his last jump. I don't remember the altitude just that he said it was way too low someone screwed up. All he remembered was an immediate and hard chute deployment one one thousand GROUND.
Although it's a modernized civilian version of the C-130.....that was AWESOME seeing one do a loop like that.....next up, they need to try a C-17 Globemaster.....just a thought. Awesome video :)
Simply Awesome!!! Who would have ever thought an aircraft like the Hercules could actually loop and remain in one piece! Sure it was not carrying anything and it had the minimum amount of fuel necessary to safely preform the flight but WOW! I don’t think that Airbus would ever try that with their A400M, if they did the wings would probably fold. C-130s and LM-100s are the BEST!
Surely they were able to do the math on wing loading and found that there was plenty of margin for this maneuver when unladen. The wing boxes on this beast must be awfully sturdy...
This isn't a loop, it's a wing over, but as it's almost directly above the camera, it looks like a loop. Still impressive though with at least 120° angle of bank, pilot has balls of steel.
And people say Lockheed have built a dog in the F35. These guys know how to build great planes. The Hurcules the best military transport plane since the Dak bar none.
First-class aircraft with exceptional peformance characteristics long with a brilliant pilot at the controls....lovely video of a quality American aircraft!!!
An Abrams would be far too heavy for any variant of the Hercules. Cargo weight limits are around 19-20 tons depending upon fuel load, the Abrams weighs 60-70 tons depending upon which version you are talking about.
Non-aviation person here (but I do qualify for AA Executive Platinum status, on a yearly basis LOL). What is the design rationale for using turboprop engines vs. jet engines? Thanks
Rationale for the turboprop engines vs. jet: much shorter take-off and landing distance, and lower fuel consumption. Take a flight in a turboprop airliner and feel the acceleration for take-off!
It's been known that a C-130 and L-100 equivalent power, mechanically, and structurally can do a loop. But the reason why they were not done is the oil system. It's a scavenge system, which limits negative G's. Once the oil pumps start sucking air, that engine has to be shut down. Does anyone know if Lock-Mart modified the oil system. If they did, was it solely for this demo or all of the L-100J's modified?
No different to the military version. It's not like they cheapened out. It just lacks the military equipment not needed for civilian planes. Like communication and radar stuff.
+jospi2 G'day, Yeah, and without all the Death-Machines & Paranoid Installations (like Chaff-throwers, Flare Dispensers, or Cockpit Armour, perhaps, and Self-sealing Fueltanks, etc...) this one weighs a shitpotful less than the Warriorised Version does ; and for a 6-minute Display-Slot it probably took off with a maximum of an hour's Fuel, so this one is as light as they ever come... But, still and all, that Take-Off was very very Tactical..., accelerate to Vmax in level flight, on the Runway and then rotate the Nose up to 45-degrees & hold it there, trading Speed for Height until maybe 20 Knots before it stalls, leaving full-throttle on and then stuffing the Nose back down onto the Horizon to accelerate again (like a Gyrogoflopter being displayed - they can go "fast" horizontally or they can climb while slowing down but they can't maintain Speed & climb, at the same time.., so they ascend in a series of "steps") and then repeating that procedure until above 10,000 ft (beyond effective range of 12.5mm/0.50 Cal. Mg fire...). The manouvre will make it a real pain in the Arse to shoot it down, even for someone who underconstumbles Deflection-Shooting & is good at it...; the Velocity is always changing, accelerating or slowing down, the Flightpath makes difficult-to-predict divergences in the Vertical Plane, while climbing the Aircraft is precisely End-On as seen from anywhere near the Runway - presenting the minimum possible Target-Area..., and all the while it's flying Straight AWAY from the Airstrip - rather than sticking around to be shot at while trying to slowly Chandelle upwards in a steep spiral over the Airfield... Whomsoever thunkeded that one up was clearly one of the sharper Tools in the Box. One wonders if they'll be sufficiently bright as to refuse to obey any orders from the Trumpletonian (Mal)Administration ; on the grounds that their Oath of Alliegance requires them to defend the Constitution from ALL Enemies, Foreign & Domestic - and Prissydunce Tronald Dump is apparently a Russian Agent (& Quisling)...(?). We live in interestink thymes, is that not so...! Take it easy, ;-p Ciao !

Wow. This was fantastic. Nicely filmed, too. The hubbub of conversation was a bit irritating given what was going on. What does it take to shut some people up?
It takes a lot to impress me when I look at flying displays. The flight routine by this Herc driver is very impressive. Nicely done.
Wayne Roberts chief LM test pilot. I'm proud to say I was his flight engineer in VP9 almost 40 years ago. He was this good then!
Guess I’m from a different generation , and have to beg to differ with people’s comments stating the plane didn’t loop. At time frame 2:00 the big gal loops !

I'm glad you included the crews. We kept the pilots honest and well-entertained!
VR-22 Out of Rota, Spain. Spent many hours keeping supplies flowing to the Mediterranean. NEVER thought I'd see a C-130 do that. Impressive!
Don't forget our superior maintenance personnel that kept those old buggers in tip top condition!
Banky braindead take
Awesome! I flew the E-model three decades ago, and it never crossed my mind that a Herk could loop! Simply amazing!
The pilots have balls of steel

Proving once again that this is my favorite plane!
Paging Mr. Johnson, Mr. "Tex" Johnson, please come to the red courtesy phone.

Ha! Good one.... I'll NEVER forget that pic taken from the window seat inside that 707 looking out on the wing while the world is upside down.
Tex barrel rolled the 707. No loops.
“Selling airplanes.”
I was studying the video to see if it was a simulator. No signs of that. Very impressive. The pilot really knew how to showcase the aircrafts capabilities.
One of the greatest aircraft ever.
Awesome. Absolutely amazing aircraft!
Thought I'd seen everything but holy crap that is some awesome stuff
That's a great air show! Incredible.

You've replied to the wrong comment.
and almost at 2:20
Seen the Mighty Herc do a lot of things but this is a first. Most beautiful and versatile plane in the skies.
I had to watch this twice....
My grandfather worked on the c130 design team and I'm pretty sure that never thought in a million years it would ever be able to do a loop
Man that thing is flying around like it's a miniature remote Remote airplane amazing
wow that was awesome i guess they call her super for a reason my grandfathers favorite in the AF was the 130 and he still likes planes and airshows he would love this video

Who cares if the loop was pretty or not? A loop of any kind in a plane like that is pretty damn incredible imo.
Impressive for such a large aircraft.
An absolutely execelent video.
What a ridiculously capable airplane!!!
Bet the 'Loadie' had fun in the back!
That's one powerful ship.
Brilliant display!Should get a few orders on the strength of this❤❤😎👍.
The modern day DC-3....! A fantastic tactical aircraft....!

Kinda want to see two Hercs in a mock dog fight now.
Anything that can Takeoff & Landing Shortly is awesome
This is an INCREDIBLE display! I never knew that the "Herky" was that agile, at all!!!!!!😱😱😱😱😱
awesome i can't believe aircraft and pilot.

LM-100J? Oh, a Herc! Well of course its amazing. Best airframe ever designed.
No the dc3 :)
That’s insane.
this needs to come to the southport or blackpool airshow
Impressive!
incredible
Amazing aircraft.
Love the Herc!
I love that plane.
Right there, that was something.
Pilot got skills
very impressive
Now I know what heads my Power Ball lottery dream buy list.
Incredible. A 1955 design.
It’s not like that has been done before but that size of plane wow Beyond impressive and I saw a comment that the pilot had balls of steel I think that’s an understatement
American Gooeyduck THAT WAS A STUPID STATEMENT and BAD USING BAD LANGUAGE!

WOW!! Old "fat Albert" can still dance around in the skies likes he's a teenager #impressive
dancing , thats the term i was thinking too
Hey Hey Hey! It's FAAAAAAAAAAAT Albert!
flying so fast the worlds a blur ,,,,,,,,,,, oh wait
"Fat Albert" is the U.S. Navy's C-130B Blue Angels Support Aircraft. This is an LM-100J. Major difference.
+justin case fat albert is a generic nickname for the herc, piss off you dont know what your on about
I can't wait for the next time the Blue Angels are in Spokane. I hope that Fat Albert will add a loop to its routine. That was super cool.
Pretty amazing.
Is there an in-cockpit video? surely.
Given the other maneuvers, a barrel roll would have been easy-peasey, and wildly impressive!
The same loads.
Simply Amazing
I used to jump out of those C-130s, I knew those pilots were holding back. (cue the snicker)
Hi Sgt D 👍🍟
44 jumps at Ft. Bragg back when I was a young paratrooper in the mid '80s.
A buddy of mine destroyed his back during his last jump. I don't remember the altitude just that he said it was way too low someone screwed up. All he remembered was an immediate and hard chute deployment one one thousand GROUND.

Would this be possible on a commercial jet or are Prop planes the only planes that can do stunts?
Its like the guy who did a barrel roll in a 707
Can it do a loop like that with an abrams tank inside? If so i hope they lash it properly because they forgot one the other day.
An Abrams would be far too heavy for any variant of the Hercules. Cargo weight limits are around 19-20 tons depending upon fuel load, the Abrams weighs 60-70 tons depending upon which version you are talking about.
wow impressive
A stretched out cork screw sideways circle thing is not a loop. A loop has to be wings level, perpendicular to the deck.
...amazing...
This pilot is good. With my help he could be the best.
The 1st RNZAF C-130H is still flying at the young age of 53.
Awesome!
Landing gear as belly-side airbrakes? Damn! The loop, too!

jospi2 True that
+WarblesOnALot that takeoff maneuver is called an obstacle avoidance takeoff , i just never seen one do 3 in a row like that
Production ended in 1992? Are they starting it back up or why the first time airshow performance 26 years later?
The previous model with a shorter fuselage was last produced in 1992. the current J-model, as shown is still being produced to this day with upgraded Rolls-Royce engines and 6- bladed props as well as a lot of other modern upgrades.
Hello nice video looking to view you next saludos
Hercules! Hercules! Hercules!
That was just plain scary.
Hard to believe that old thing is still kicking around. It's cheap, practical, and effective, and the military industrial congressional complex just isn't into that.
Can it do that with troops inside? :-)
Was the pilot serving tea in the cockpit while inverted? RIP Bob Hoover.
I wonder how many Airbus A400s they sold following the C-130s loop?
Holy shit!!!!!!! Nuff said
Wow!!
Wow. This was fantastic. Nicely filmed, too. The hubbub of conversation was a bit irritating given what was going on. What does it take to shut some people up?
What does it take to shut some people up? Engines that are not as quiet as these!
Believe it or not the pilot doesn't consider this a loop he calls it a vertical escape maneuver with a corkscrew that resembles a loop
Epic
