New "Fat Albert" C-130J Super Hercules - First Public Demo!

- The US Navy Blue Angels' C-130J Super Hercules, known as "Fat Albert", performs a public demonstration for the first time at Airshow London 2021 in Ontario, Canada. This was the first official Fat Albert performance since 2016. The team's previous C-130T was retired from service in 2019.
Fat Albert has flown during practice sessions throughout 2021 in preparation for being approved to fly performances yet again.

I want to build a 1/48 scale fat Albert in homage to the blue angels
I love the landing approach at 4:00. I learned to skydive before I took flying lessons, and on my third or fourth landing my instructor dryly said over the intercom, "You don't have to dive-bomb the runway."
I guess I had internalized the 3:1 L/D of ram air canopies a bit too much.
Still passes me off everytime I remember it.

as a former marine i can assure you flying in a c130 is no picnic. its like being inside a paint can shaker while 4 turbo prop engines possess your soul.
Well you don't have to be a formus shoulder...
Imagine its noisy aswell.
I wonder if the new ones with the 6 blade props and RR engines are any better? The vibration must at least be different. I just talked to a Herc pilot last week, and he says they tended to under estimate all the added power the new engines provide. WAY different from the old engines.
I flew on several while in a TACCS unit in the AF, even got to ride the jump seat on the flight deck a few times(also C-141, slept on the hood of a jeep one time and the bench seat of out 880 truck, smooth ride)....

Impressive short take off and short landing. So cool when pilot backed up the aircraft. Nothing like the sound of turboprops. I love it!

Pretty noisy for the guys inside. The only thing noisier on the inside that I flown on was the C-123K.

I saw the JATO take-off back in the day, that was a short take-off. 😃

Technically it has jets, see as those are turbo prop engines. 😁
@@CoordinatedCarry It has a lot more in common with a big Turbo Fan engine than most people realize. Those props are essentially large unducted fans.

While a crew chief on C130s in the Air Force low level flying in mountain passes and across deserts was an amazing experience. Just looking at them you would never believe how well those things fly and how hard they can yank and bank.

I too was a flying crew chief on herks, including combat talons, hanging off the ramp during aircraft intercepts over the forest of Belgium was the greatest!!
Even tho it’s been 35 years since those times, I miss those aircraft greatly, definitely an epic time in my air force career
Those RATO bottles in the old plane made the show much noisier and spectacular! That’s what airshows are about! My grown up children and I have great memories watching the old Fat Albert skyrocketing straight up!

Know what you mean! I spent many hours on Fat Albert flying to airshows. I was a Crew Chief on the Blue Angels Jets back in the mid 70’s. Fat Albert didn’t do the JATO assists takeoffs often during airshows but when it was done it was a crowd pleaser for sure. Never heard any of the Fat Albert crew members complain since they had to offload reload Fat Albert to perform a JATO demo.

The C-130 just had its birthday. August 23, 1954 the first C-130 took to the air. Amazing aircraft
Thanks for posting that. I knew it was '54. It's been my favorite aircraft since July '71 when I first jumped it. I've never been on one when it landed, though we got a taste of its ability to rapidly deccelerate when a small Cessna crossed our path on a takeoff. The pilot came over the intercom and sounding like a commercial airline pilot calmly announced that we were going to go back and try it again and you on the starboard side can observe the plane we just avoided. August 23, 1954... I was three years old. If I live to be 140 or older, the C-130 will still be flying, still be the ever present workhorse in the sky. I never fail to look up and around whenever I hear one flying nearby... the most unmistakable sound. ( I never fail to wish I was on the sortie, too... just as long as I have a parachute ☁️🌧⛅☁️☁️)
@@mikegrant8490 My pleasure. I missed Viet Nam. I would not have gotten a pilot slot any way. I had to earn my wings, as many of us did, by money out of our own pockets. The C-130 was the first cargo plane to be pressurized and could play in the rare air and with speeds approaching a P-51. It is a stick and rudder airplane at home on a short dirt strip. To me, it’s a pilots airplane capable of doing what needs to be done in whatever the situation calls for. Had I had the opportunity it would have been my choice of birds to fly.
@@crawford323 I just find it amazing that this particular aircraft has enjoyed the longevity it has. That generations have used it all over the planet under all sorts of conditions... those first ones that I flew on were ones that had an antenna wire that stretched from the top of the tail to near the cockpit. Air National Guard planes fulfilling duty as transporting jump school parachute
Kinda miss the RATO system on takeoff, but the plane looks sharp and is well handled. Love the roll rate, and that tactical landing was amazing. What a rollercoaster ride! Thanks for the awesome video!
Technically speaking, RATO is correct... rocket-assisted-take-off. C-130s uses 8 Aerojet KS-1000 solid-fuel rocket bottles. The terms JATO & RATO are interchangeable.
I saw the JATO takeoffs many times over the years, really cool. A shortage of the rocket bottles eventually led to the demise of that part of the demo. I believe the last JATO was in 2009.
My buddy's dad flew the JATO LC-130 that does the Antartica missions and they need JATOs to take off from the ice/snow runway. It has skiis
@@georgesmith4642 The blues discontinued the JATO/RATO demos because it was stressing the airframe. Causing more maintenance than needed, and adding more complexity to the demo itself. Plus with the newer engines, the RATO/JATO isn’t really necessary for the newer C130’s. Although the coast guard still uses them for Arctic missions.

I love the C-130. I worked on them at Dyess AFB. Great aircraft. I flew all over the world in them. We had the H model but I did get to fly in the J model while in the final stages of development. The J model can definitely climb like a beast. The assault landing is cool, I got to experience those in real life. It leaves your stomach in your throat while you are looking straight at the ground coming at you. Fantastic aircraft.
Great display of the abilities of the that aircraft. The pilot backed that C130 up better than most people trying to back into a parking spot.
Lovely to see the ex Royal Air Force C-130 put to good use again.
Shame we are binning these more than capable aircraft for the atlas that spends more time in bits than in the air, plus sf don't like the a400 either, too big and loud compared to the mighty herc
Worked on C130s for 5 years in the 80s. They've been around forever and they'll be around a lot more years. Great bird!

It is amazing that these birds are so quite until they are next to you. I have experienced this at night and it still leaves me with goose bumps.

Very awesome performance & it looks like the Marine pilot is sharp enough to Fly The Angels Planes just in case one of them cannot make a show ! The takeoff showed off the power as even though the craft was probably almost empty of cargo ; I have never seen Fat Albert get airborne any faster except with JATO Bottles attached ! ! Probably the best looking C-130 you'll ever see. Unless you're in a drop zone waiting for supplies and ammunition. Then, they're all beautiful.

This Fat Albert use to be a Green and Grey RAF bird until the Brits sold her.
I prefer the old T model paint scheme over this one.

The Lockheed is about as perfect a tactical transport as possible and she was designed and flew years before most airmen piloting and fixing her today were born. She's beautiful in her Blue Angels livery and even more so when dirty and scuffed up from the battlefield operations for which she was imagined. I got to ride in one in 1967 from North Island NAS to NAS Lemoore. The take off acceleration was incredible.
Grew up watching the "Herc" fly over my hometown. Love 'em.

You really can tell how light the aircraft is or better said: how capable the C-130 is without freight. And with a capable pilot at the sticks. Seeing such a large bird take off in such a short distance is always amazing to see...😎😎👍👍

The variable pitch props create drag as well as thrust... wow, pilot skilz
For the life of me I could not figure out how it stopped so fast, thank you. These props work like the rotor on an apache helicopter...or pretty much every helicopter, that makes so much sense!
They actually can fully reverse thrust. That's how it can back up like that.
I remember as a kid seeing the o.g. Fat Albert with the rocket assist takeoff. That was pure awesomeness 👌

Yeah he landed (or first touchdown) on the front two wheels as well!!! Definitely a blue angle’s pilot!
He didn’t just stick it in revers, as soon as the wheels touched pilot rotated the props to a reverse pitch position, allowing the plane to come to a quick stop. They have so much power when it went from forward to backwards the front tires lifted

@@Cheap_Grey_Plastic It is intentional, they did it with the old Albert too regularly, even it seems they are a little it more careful with the new bird, the "Sarajewo Approaches" with the old one were regularly pretty more rough...
I'm blown away! I've never seen that AC before, that was wild. The way that beast can bank & that insane approach & short landing & then reverse parking to boot! Man oh man, absolutely incredible how an AC over 100K pounds can be manoeuvred like that. Amazing Pilots & AC. Thanks for sharing. I sub 😊
The amazing thing is that it's been doing it for decades too. This is a newer J model and it's still 21 years old. If you want to see a herc do something truly spectacular, check out Lockheeds new LM-100J demo a couple years back. It basically did a loop (this is highly debated, as is the pilots clearance to do so lol... ) but it's amazing to watch. The drop down landing was spectacular, with a perfectly calculated and well rehearsed slope angle of recovery, with about 8 seconds of buffer safety before touch down with the airplane perfectly parallel to the ground. Beautiful.
Crazy cool landing. The pilot knows what he's doing! Love the front wheel hop with the fast change in direction after landing!

Love that plane! In 1958 our mobile training detachment moved all of our personnel and equipment in just one of those and it was so easy to load, and it was fast. In 1957 it took four C-119s to do the same job.
Had the pleasure of flying in a much older version of this aircraft. We where flying NOE and it was awesome. One of the best combat planes made.

Had the pleasure of experiencing more than a couple tactical maneuvers in one of these. Its amazing how graceful they feel from the inside. Something I'll never forget even if I wanted to, that and the smell of jet fuel lol. Great job to all you aircraft personnel!!

My grandfather retired from Lockheed, twice. lol He did some design work on the C-130 and served as a technical trainer for other countries who purchased them.

@@redwolfpiping5701 Probably not needed with the new much more powerful engines and the 6 bladed props. Notice how fast it slowed down on landing? Full reversal of the props and the constant speed of the jet turbine engines. These birds can land and take off from aircraft carriers without using JATO or RATO packs.

Turboprops just keep getting smoother. Kind of amazing to track all the iterations and history of this airframe.
Nice display, very cool landing and takeoff. Loving the nosewheel bouncing up in the air after being compressed by the hard braking. Good old Hercules.

Considering the C-130 Hercules first flew in 1954 it must be a record in longevity only bested by the DC3/C-47.
Close...The B-52 first took flight 4/15/1952 when I was 5 years old...They'll still be flying a century later...
More astonishing is that the Hercules is still produced. Of course with many improvements but still the basic design.

@@skunkjobb : Really hope we get to add the winglets before I retire. I've seen the prototype a couple of times. They show it off to some of the VIPs that tour the factory. They will help reduce drag and make maneuvering and fuel performance even better.
With the more powerful engines and 6 blade "scimitar" propellers, the JATO system isn't really missed that much. The replaceable "ice shield" on either side of the aircraft had to be enlarged because the blades were throwing the ice further back at full throttle and missing the shield.
I'm surprised in this day and age that they can still call him "Fat Albert." Some people watching from the ramp might get offended. 😂 Besides, I've only thought of the C-130 as slightly "plump." Definitely miss the JATO. It was one of the most unique features of the Fat Albert demo. Still, good to see the "wide body" Angel back in the air.

I remember an Eastern Airlines pilot telling me as I was departing in FL from ORD in a SuperConstellation that my dear prop driven Connie was not going to last as jet travel gets more common. He said “people are all in a hurry”. I was devastated. Must have been 13+/-yrs old.
Chonky Bert might be more widely understood these days lol.
So THAT is the reason we still fly the C-130.

Two things. A) Loved how they used "ground-effect" lift to extend the runway and gain full flight speed. B) Where was the required "beeping" to warn it was backing up? I thought all state and federal vehicles were required to have that.
Those are so easily ignored as people get use to the beeping that many companies use alternative sounds for backing up. It appears the drastic change in prop noise is indicator enough to be OSHA compliant.
Combat mode. Stealthy and silent, no beeping so bad guys can't hear your Herc backing out of its hidey hole.
So well done ... respect.
I love that aircraft and have seen the aircraft in person at airshows and along with the Blue Angels and they are great working together both aircraft and crews.
When they did push over after the initial climb those negative Gs would have had me upchucking my lunch. 😄

Greatest tactical airlifted made! Hard to believe it’s been flying since 1954, 68 yrs of reliable service. The C-130J is going to be around for a long time.
They really need to bring the JATO back. That took the show to a whole other level.

Love it but part of me wishes they had the c130j 30. The extended fuselage would've been beneficial I'm sure.
I think they specifically stayed away from the long fuselage due to its susceptibility of a ramp strike during high performance take off and landing maneuvers.

@@RamblerMan68 : Ha ha... yeah. Had foreign flight crews take possession of 3 new long ones. The first time they were up with the test pilots, the first two dragged the tails on landing. In the third aircraft the test pilot suggested that he land the plane. Base commander was not happy about the scratches on his runway.
We figure the pilots had been practicing with a short version, both in simulators and real aircraft. It was another 10~12 days before they could fly their brand new aircraft home.
What a wonderful piece of equipment.

That J does have the (old now) 6-blade props by Dowdy. If you're thinking of the 8-bladed Hamilton Sundstrom ones...they won't physically fit on the J gearbox.
