I will never let go of my love for the number 70. Loving the little guys. It hurt to see him come short in 2009, but at least he drove a Ferrari in his racing career. My first full race i watched was Nurburgring '99....those tears he had there never left my mind.
I can remember that race very well, too. It was a stunning performance by Luca. He'd really deserved fourth place then, at a time when only the first six scored points and Minardi rarely had a season when they scored even a single point.
In regards to the 2007 Hungary pit stop incident, you insinuate Alonso was just frustrated by Hamilton's performance and that's why he decided to block him, however you are failing to mention that it was Hamilton's antics that instigated that when despite it being Alonso's turn to get the optimum qualifying position on track Hamilton refused to let him through. That is what provoked Alonso and he retaliated with the pit stop block.

Fisi beat Button in 01 and Massa in 04. Deserves credit. He was mega in average cars. We know now how good Alonso is. Look at what he's doing to Stroll aged 42! Puts Fisi against him into context. Still think his 2003 Brazil win is one of the greatest ever. Very underrated.

If it was lifetime rankings I would put alonso above Kimi, but not if you only count in the 2000s. Winning spa with that 2009 car alone….. lovely video.
One of the things that just came back to memory again watching this was how terribly samey most of the 2006 liveries were. Nearly all the cars were some combination of red/black/white/grey/silver. The only exceptions really were the Renault and the Red Bull, and you can forgive Ferrari but you'd have thought everyone else would at least have spoken to each other :-)
@@tayuno - isn;t he a double Indy 500 winner now as well? Yeah, I know that this wasn;t in the noughties and Indycar is of a far lower general driving standard than F1, but he's certainly made a name for himself
Got to agree, Button deserves 4th. He took 10 podiums in the 2004 BAR, helping them finish 2nd. He salvaged that horrendous 2005 and scored that win at Hungary. And winning 2009 at Brawn, what a year
Nelson Piquet jr now has to sit at a table with his dad, the current world champion and his nephew who was fathered by another f1 driver more succesful than him. Hopefully he has a really fulfilling life outside of the sport, otherwise that must sting.
Not sure about some of your rankings (Massa and Vettel above Button?) but really great analysis of the drivers. Also reminded me of the existence of drivers like Zonta, Liuzzi and Wurz!
Massa was one of the most overrated drivers this century. But Button was actually mostly pretty unimpressive except with Sato as a teammate or a dominant car. He got clapped in 2000 and 2002, would have been clapped again in 2002 if Trulli's car hadn't broken down from in front of him so many times. He did beat the shell of Villeneuve who'd also be the only teammate not to smash Massa outside 2008 and Stroll. Rubens was years past his prime and bar a good 2006, Button really struggled to beat this old washed up driver. Hell, in the second half of 2009, and 2008 Rubens was slightly but clearly better. Button's 2000s vastly overrated, but his 2010s were good
What an astonishingly great video. Personally I think Kimi was 2nd best in this decade (no bias I promise lol) literally because of 2003 & 2005 & McLaren's horrific reliability
Alonso >> overrated Kimi. FUCKING MASSA beat 3 teammates... Washed up Villeneuve (after getting destroyed by alonso after filling in for Trulli, who was matching alonso), Stroll, and "prime" Kimi. Drivers he didn't beat? Heidfeld, Fisichella (the year before Alonso destroyed him after getting matched by Trulli), Alonso destroyed him, and even overrated average Bottas dealt with him
That 2000 Arrows car was actually pretty competitive. They just lacked the funds to finish races. A lot of retirements came from parts wearing out where they could have stayed in the race and finish in the points if they could afford new parts. They could probably also finished races more if they were less aggressive with the set-up, but they wanted to get more money out of sponsor by showing potential. Verstappen often knew he would not be able to finish the race he would start because parts would wear out during the race (like his brakes did in Montreal). Verstappen getting replaced by Frentzen was all about the money and sponsors Frenzen would bring. It would still not be enough to keep Arrows from falling over.
How Kobayashi is above Glock is beyond me. Like,,, if we're talking about their performances in that decade alone, Glock is easily better than Kobayashi (even if Kamui had only two races in that decade). Still, great video man, unbelievably well put together!
1:29:00 "... after crashing into Montoya behind the safety car in Monaco." Since Montoya drove into MSC from the rear after MSC left no room, how did MSC crash into Montoya?
As a French Canadian, I couldn't agree more with JV rating here. He had, and still has, an ego problem and it probably took over and ruined his racing career.
FIA Tried to deliberately stop Michael Schumacher winning starting 2003 however succeeded in 2005, if ever you know what I mean. He will remain the greatest driver of all time for me and millions across the world.
@@goatgoat9940 However, in 2005, they banned tyre changes in races which hurted all Bridgestone Teams so much, but only on Ferrari we saw a very huge impact on their performance. I think with tyre changes allowed, Schumacher wouldn't had retired in 2006 and he would have won more championships
Michael Schumacher deliberately crashed into competitors, blocked the track in Monaco and blocked his teammate from challenging him by way of contracts, changing the tire rules was a small thing. F1 shouldn't need or have tire changes or refueling for a 300km grand sprint. And like someone else said, the FIA made Michelin change their tires mid 2006 and they barely could compete after that.
@@richardhobbs7360 Stop lying. 2017 rule changes were implemented to speed up the slow cars everyone hated and complained about. 2021 floor regs were implemented to trim downforce because Pirelli could not guarantee the tires could cope with the increased loads and speed of another year of development of the already record breaking 2020 cars. In fact, originally before testing people were unsure whether the high rake or low rake cars would be affected more but Hamilton fanboys like to play revisionist history in hindsight of the Merc being bumped down from untouchable rocket in 2020 to only marginally better in 2021.
Massa made some crucial mistakes that just were lost points in the end. But at such a close difference between the drivers it’s fair to say that both performed on equal levels in that year
@@simonbrunner3062 Actually pretty agreeable. The BMW had no right to give Robert the lead in the championship. It was kinda clear that he wouldn’t stop Hamilton and Massa at the end but that is championship lead came after the 7th race is really spectacular because the grid was more or less sorted out at that stage
@@simonbrunner3062 I wouldn't say that about Kimi at that time. He started the season very well, but starting from Canada he run out of luck. He missed out on 3 possible wins in Canada(taken out by Hamilton) Silverstone (Ferrari strategy) and in France (exhaust failure), then he didn't score points for 4 races and at this point Ferrari taken the car into the direction Massa wanted and Kimi bassically played a second fiddle. He had his last Hail Mary attempt at getting back into the championship in Spa, but sadly failed (such an epic race btw, could of been his 5th in Spa too).
This is historic! F1 is lacking stats and serious rankings so much. It is in one league with football. It's so exhausting to have conversations with people about which guys were greater than others......... NBA is doing a so much better job, they have numbers for everything. You still have any kind of table or so with everything you gathered here so far including the 2010 stuff?
Problem is that, with all the rules changes over the years, you can't really compare different eras. For example, the points system: Up until 2002, you could compare drivers (and constructors) relatively good, because it didin't change that much over the decades (only exception being that the winner was awarded 8 points in the 50's, later 9 and eventually 10, that the 6th was awarded one point only from 1960 onwards and that, before that, there was one point awarded for the fastest lap). The change in 2003 was already targeting Ferrari's dominance, and from 2010 onwards it's completely uncomparable to what it was before. It's a different sport nowadays. Other than football, that's pretty much still the same game as it was back in the 60's, with only very minor rule changes.
21:28 I would definitely say Bourdais did not "luck into points" at the Aus GP in 2008; he was running fourth, heading for third until his engine died 3 laps from the end
Great video but justige to Button. Hard to not see him in top 5 based on both stats and drives on less capable cars. He had his up and downs but so did everyone on the list except (maybe) Schumi.

No wins, no podiums, no poles, no fastest laps, no points, and what did he say about finishes???😜😳😳😅😂🤣 Poor guys. I was actually surprised by the information on Romaine Grosjean. But I think it was after 2010 when I became hopelessly addicted to F1. I will have to check out his stats during 2010-2020. I think he retired in 2020 or 2021 after his incredible fireball crash that he escaped from.
Hamilton's Monaco 2008 win was better than Silverstone. But I don't think he'd have won in Canada - he's just been jumped by Raikkonen and Kubica in the stops, and furthermore the 1-stopping drivers had the better strategy thanks to the safety car. Would have probably been HEI, RAI, KUB, HAM. Or something like that.
His 2008 Monaco win was all down to strategy, he carried more fuel and got by them in the pits, not to mention that Massa had a 12 second advantage over 2nd place (Kimi at the time) which was reduced by the safety car. Hamilton's win in Silverstone is his best feat in F1.

Vettel‘s prime time is early 2010s not 2000s. His results in 00s so impressive but Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button scored more points, podiums, wins, and a title. But he scored points in his first race and a win with Toro Rosso. His achievement should be praised.
Genuinely was intending to skip the Jos Verstappen section on principle, but when I heard the annunciation of PUNTED as I was scrubbing I had to check back and see what you did. Marvellous touch on a superb video!
Hamilton only has 4 consecutive wdc's, and since he didn't win the title this year he will have to win another 5 titles to break even with schumacher, meaning he will have to win a title at 42 with fierce competition, something that he simply can't do
Sorry for never having a 5 year period with a dominant car while having a slave team mate. ONLY 4 🤦🤦🤦 Believe that, those 4 rank a lot higher than those 5 clown titles against clown competition
@@goatgoat9940 1. Mercedes had such a fast car in 2014, 2015 and 2016 it wasn't even comparable to the other cars. In 2017 and 2018 ferrari came close but mercedes still had the fastest car. In 2019 and 2020 mercedes had another dominant. Ferrari had the best car in 2002 and 2004, true, but not as dominant as 2014-2016 mercedes and only for 2 years. Both Schumacher and Hamilton had the fastest car, but Hamilton clearly had a greater car advantage. 2. Imagine thinking Bottas wasn't a slave. Yes he technically had the same rank as Hamilton but let's be honest he spent most of his career at mercedes being hamiltons slave. Rosberg wasn't submissive, which resulted in Hamilton having a hard time in 2014 and literally losing against his teammate in 2016. I don't see how this makes Hamilton a great driver. Barichello also was rarely as fast as Schumacher, so even if he technically had the same rank as Schumacher the same thing as with Bottas would've happened anyway 3. How were Montoya, Raikkonen, Alonso, Hakinnen and Coulthard clown competition? The only real competition Hamilton ever got was from Rosberg, his teammate, which only shows that Hamiltons titles were more down to his car than his driving abilities, unless you think Rosberg was one of the greatest drivers ever, which he wasn't
Massa shouldn't be over Hakkinen. Mika's 2000 season is enough to beat any effort from Massa, despite Mika only racing for 2 years in this 2000s. Also, no way Montoya is behind Vettel and Massa
Hungarian here. Baumgartner is, if you want, a pay driver himself. His father is a famous car merchant in Hungary in spent lots of money so his son could have a racing driver career so he was always more famous for being "daddies boy" than a raw racing talent and Gianmaria Bruni for example outqualified him 12:6 in 2004. His speed wasnt that great and he inherited the point in the US GP in 2004. But yeah fair enough there are still pay drivers who didnt deserve a higher position than Zsolt in this list. I give you that.
45:52 I thought he was making a paticularly rude gesture towards the Ferrari there, but then I realised he was just cheering his fellow countryman on after they won their first championship.
Heidfeld didn't beat Webber and I say this for a couple of reasons. First, Webber did in fact finish the season ahead on points. And sure, this is where people will be quick to to say Heidfeld missed some races - but who won the world title in 1976? Hunt or Lauda? It was Hunt even though Lauda missed some races. But putting aside the technicalities of the standings for a moment, there is a genuine argument that Webber won on performance too. Webber was taken out of p3 by Fisichella through no fault of his own at the Malaysian Grand Prix (allowing the trailing Heidfeld to inherit two positions and a haul of points). Webber was also a victim of Williams giving Heidfeld the undercut at Monaco when Webber was ahead and in p3. Webber had been comfortably quicker all weekend but this pit strategy flipped the positions of the two. So, again, Webber lost a stack of points through no fault of his own despite being ahead of his team mate on both occasions. In terms of performance merit, these two races alone would have put Webber ahead on points in the races the two both featured. So no, I don't agree that Heidfeld beat Webber. In fact it was patently clear Webber was much, much faster but incredibly unlucky - something Webber was known for in his early days of F1.
Great ranking in general but fuck me Massa really the 5th best driver of the decade? He had roughly 1.5 good seasons and even those were riddled with massive errors.

Those are the 71 drivers from 2000-2009 I could think of. I hope there wasn't another one-off MidlandF1 reserve driver I forgot. 😅
For the Hamilton segment, Massa wasn’t the only reason he finished outside the points in Japan 2008. Hamilton himself was penalized for forcing Raikkonen off track at Turn 1
Great video! 👍 I only wish that you'd keep the drivers names up on the screen because sometimes I forget who you're talking about.
You weren’t kidding with the “this is the longest video I’ve made”
Your content SMASHES the competition
Class video, can’t help but feel Timo Glock has been done dirty though 😂
I'll confess that he was a bit of an afterthought as I realised midway through recording that I'd forgotten to rank him!
@@PeterBrookF1 haha he is fairly forgettable, pretty solid driver in the late 2000s though, great reminiscing on some of the old drivers and performances!
Timo Glock: the only major things i remember him for are Brazil 2008 and the Suzuka crash that enabled Kamui Kobayashi's debut
Ralf: Turn 13 at Indianapolis
Schumi: I mean, what else but his dominant start?
Barrichello: I mean, what else but his stint as Schumi's second banana?
de la Rosa: SPLASH! after a DNF at Indy
Badoer: The closest he came to scoring points his gearbox went "Nope" at the Nurburgring in 1999
Gene: He actually DID score a point in the '99 European GP - the point believed to be the catalyst of Mika Hakkinen's second title
Button: WHERE DID HE COME FROM in 2009
Vettel: the first half of the 2010s started extremely well; for the 2000s his two most memorable bits are speeding _immediately_ at Turkey in 2006 and a shock win at Monza in 2008
Kubica: Flew into Canada's hairpin with one wheel, no front wing, and surprisingly lesser injuries than feared
Massa: Were it not for Glock, he would've won the 2008 Drivers Championship
Irvine: Were it not for Gene, he would've won the 1999 Drivers Championship when Schumi let him by at Suzuka
Rosberg: 2014 to 2016 was his best years, especially 2016 where he won the Drivers Championship; one of his two podiums with Williams was 2008 Australia, which he shared with then-friend Lewis Hamilton
Lewis: 2014 was when he really caught fire, as Mercedes (which he joined in 2013 in a move that McLaren actually implemented into the final episode of their webseries Tooned's first season) was more than ready for the new engine formula
Nick Heidfeld: His record for most races and points has since been overtaken by Nico Hulkenberg the Covid Supersub
If it was lifetime rankings I would put alonso above Kimi, but not if you only count in the 2000s. Winning spa with that 2009 car alone….. lovely video.
Now time to rank every 2000s car 😈
Button's ranking is wayy too low for how much he delivered in the 2000s. just ahead of Hamilton imo
One of the things that just came back to memory again watching this was how terribly samey most of the 2006 liveries were. Nearly all the cars were some combination of red/black/white/grey/silver. The only exceptions really were the Renault and the Red Bull, and you can forgive Ferrari but you'd have thought everyone else would at least have spoken to each other :-)
I also remember 95 being pretty bad for almost all the cars being based around a blue colour scheme.
You did Mark Webber so dirty with that picture lmfaoooooo
Love your content
Again a truly amazing video 😍
Amazing work!
"We are now into Top 20, with a real big names"
"First up is Takuma Sato"
lol
Sato was a legend. Even dragging that Shitbox of a Super Aguri ahead of Alonso on pure pace in 2007.
@@tayuno - isn;t he a double Indy 500 winner now as well? Yeah, I know that this wasn;t in the noughties and Indycar is of a far lower general driving standard than F1, but he's certainly made a name for himself
Sato was good with the rubbish cars that he drove in F1 and now he is a double Indy 500 winner ...
Sato was quick
Button been done dirty here - better than Hakkinen, Hamilton and Vettel if we’re talking 2000’s.
And Massa!
Got to agree, Button deserves 4th. He took 10 podiums in the 2004 BAR, helping them finish 2nd. He salvaged that horrendous 2005 and scored that win at Hungary. And winning 2009 at Brawn, what a year

This video is when you realise how many bad drivers there have been!😂
Crazy one, excellent quality and detailed analysis, well done

Nelson Piquet jr now has to sit at a table with his dad, the current world champion and his nephew who was fathered by another f1 driver more succesful than him. Hopefully he has a really fulfilling life outside of the sport, otherwise that must sting.
Isnt it his niece?
Your videos are absolutely incredible!
How Kobayashi is above Glock is beyond me. Like,,, if we're talking about their performances in that decade alone, Glock is easily better than Kobayashi (even if Kamui had only two races in that decade).
Still, great video man, unbelievably well put together!
I'll confess that Glock was a bit of an afterthought as I realised halfway through recording the script that I'd forgotten to rank him!
#NoOneCanBreakTheWinkelRock!
Absolutely amazing video, you got a new fan
FIA Tried to deliberately stop Michael Schumacher winning starting 2003 however succeeded in 2005, if ever you know what I mean. He will remain the greatest driver of all time for me and millions across the world.
However succeeded?? Ferrari cried to the FIA to make Michelin change their tire model after Hungary to make sure they still can catch up
@@goatgoat9940 However, in 2005, they banned tyre changes in races which hurted all Bridgestone Teams so much, but only on Ferrari we saw a very huge impact on their performance. I think with tyre changes allowed, Schumacher wouldn't had retired in 2006 and he would have won more championships
like Lewis in 17 and 21
its not an MSC only thing
Imagine being ranked lower than a guy who ran 14 race laps in the slowest car.
2008 should had been gone to Massa. But looks like that Hamilton its victim on this video bro.. However, its a great video again!
Massa made some crucial mistakes that just were lost points in the end. But at such a close difference between the drivers it’s fair to say that both performed on equal levels in that year
And '07 to Lewis but hey ho
Kubica was the best driver in 2008. Massa and Hamilton were making mistakes constantly, while Räikkönen already started treating F1 like a hobby.
Yes for all my ranking videos I make spreadsheets that I work off!
Not sensing any aggression at all with Jos 🤔
21:28 I would definitely say Bourdais did not "luck into points" at the Aus GP in 2008; he was running fourth, heading for third until his engine died 3 laps from the end
1:11:40. "however, the best was yet to come." chills.
Great video but justige to Button. Hard to not see him in top 5 based on both stats and drives on less capable cars. He had his up and downs but so did everyone on the list except (maybe) Schumi.
lol the verstappen one was punchline after punchline...
I don't get it, could you explain?
@@das_flauschige_animehorn6085 jos verstappen supposedly was beating his wife and maybe even max when he was younger... thus every word he used talking about jos had to do something with agression or punching :P

Yuji Ide actually returned to Super GT for 2022, got his first podium since 2010 too
Vettle can’t be that high for the 2000s
Great compilation of data. Incredible

Who would've thought that McNish's crash at 130R wouldn't be his biggest crash. It's HUGE if you (reader) haven't seen it.
It's all subjective, but I'd have Vettel higher. Doing well in the STR waaaaaaay out performs doing well in a dominant car.

2020.
@@grimm6jack In Silverstone Kimi was pressuring Hamilton at first all before Ferrari f uped his strategy by not putting him on a fresh set of tyres

Vettel before Barrichello and Button? Idk man… Vettel was good but a WC and 11 time winner at Ferrari are better.
Vettel‘s prime time is early 2010s not 2000s. His results in 00s so impressive but Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button scored more points, podiums, wins, and a title.
But he scored points in his first race and a win with Toro Rosso. His achievement should be praised.

Definitely disagree with a lot of these but very interesting and thorough video
1:29:16 a record that he will propably hold for a very long time
Hamilton: Am i a joke to you?
Hamilton only has 4 consecutive wdc's, and since he didn't win the title this year he will have to win another 5 titles to break even with schumacher, meaning he will have to win a title at 42 with fierce competition, something that he simply can't do
Sorry for never having a 5 year period with a dominant car while having a slave team mate.
ONLY 4 🤦🤦🤦 Believe that, those 4 rank a lot higher than those 5 clown titles against clown competition
Also just cute how YOU determine what a professional athlete is able to at 42 or not 🤦
@@victorvanraaij8532 no i meant about 7 titles
Barichello also was rarely as fast as Schumacher, so even if he technically had the same rank as Schumacher the same thing as with Bottas would've happened anyway
3. How were Montoya, Raikkonen, Alonso, Hakinnen and Coulthard clown competition? The only real competition Hamilton ever got was from Rosberg, his teammate, which only shows that Hamiltons titles were more down to his car than his driving abilities, unless you think Rosberg was one of the greatest drivers ever, which he wasn't
that was one of the most backhanded compliments i saw to a 12th place 😂
Massa shouldn't be over Hakkinen. Mika's 2000 season is enough to beat any effort from Massa, despite Mika only racing for 2 years in this 2000s. Also, no way Montoya is behind Vettel and Massa
"Yeeted off the track by Kimi Raikkonen" 🤣
Schumacher will always be the goat of F1
Fantastic video but i disagree with Da Matta being so high he was too inconsistent
I think Baumgartner deserved a higher spots on this list. I mean, how could he come in lower place to other scoreless pay drivers?
Hungarian here. Baumgartner is, if you want, a pay driver himself. His father is a famous car merchant in Hungary in spent lots of money so his son could have a racing driver career so he was always more famous for being "daddies boy" than a raw racing talent and Gianmaria Bruni for example outqualified him 12:6 in 2004. His speed wasnt that great and he inherited the point in the US GP in 2004. But yeah fair enough there are still pay drivers who didnt deserve a higher position than Zsolt in this list. I give you that.

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER AND JIM CLARK WITH ROSS BRAWN AT THE HELM VS THE FIELD?🤔👍🏆
It seems cruel to put Winkelhock in 67th when he managed to lead a race, something I'm sure many drivers have not managed to achieve.
Should be around 50ish.
We all know the 🐐 Marcus Winkelhock should be number one
Yuji Ide is GOD
Great ranking in general but fuck me Massa really the 5th best driver of the decade? He had roughly 1.5 good seasons and even those were riddled with massive errors.
Winkelhock deserved a much higher entry :-)
